5 out of 5 stars If you love Chesapeake Bay, this is your book........1999-08-07

If you live on, near or visit and love Chesapeake Bay you should read this engaging and informative book. A collection of John Page William Jr.'s columns from "Chesapeake Bay Magazine," the book walks you through a year on the Bay and it's surrounding country. Once you've read it, you'll be amazed at how it sharpens your view of what is going on around you on or along the water. This is a book for anyone who enjoys the Bay in any way -- boating, camping, cottaging, or just sitting by the waterside on a quiet afternoon with a line in the water. Highly recommended!

Not terrible, but don't rely on it for finding anything special.

Taking a cruise to San Juan? Fine book. You will get off the boat, go to some reasonable shops, eat a good (but not cheap) meal, and do fine.

Interested in a fun week outside of San Juan? Not so great. Did a fine job (although far from complete) on where to stay. Especially Paradors (gov't run hotels) were a great contribution from the book.

Looking for a place to snorkel? Or for a special beach? The treasure-hunt attitude of the book ("nearby, you will find super beach with incredible snorkeling") is useless. How about some directions and physical location? "Nearby" seems to encompass everything from driving down unmarked roads to hiking trash strewn trails where you sincerely hope the end of the trail is a great beach, and not a mugging. Maps were also incredibly inaccurate.

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2004-03-02

The respected Frommer really falls to the bottom of the pile after this book. We took our first visit to Puerto Rico last month and we looking for what the reviews promised. Well, unless you want information about San Juan and Old San Juan, forget about it. There was NO info about our resort - The Copamarina - which, we've learned is in another of Frommer's books as a recommended spot. We were staying in the southern portion of the island and there's little info in the book for that area. We were particularly interested in purchasing the masks worn at Carnivale...the shops recommended in the book no longer exist. The Fox-Delicias Mall in Ponce is completely closed and empty for renovation.

This pocket-sized guide was the only thing I needed to carry on my trip to Puerto Rico. With tips on the best beaches, wild life attraction, and restaurants, we were able to get the true authentic experience. Prices were exact and current, ratings and highlights were easy to find, and the cost was low. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get the most of their vacation without a big, heavy book.

5 out of 5 stars All the Days of Her Life.......2006-05-23

All the Days of Her life by Lurlene McDaniel is a book about a girl named Lacey Duval. Lacey Duval was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of eleven. Lacey doesn't want anyone from school to find out because she's afraid that they'll start calling her names and treat her differently. Lacey Duval starts to feel out of control in almost every aspects of her life. There's nothing she can do about her parents divorce, there's nothing she can do about the death of her young friend, there's nothing she can do about having diabetes, that's what she believes. Then, one day she decides she wants to fit in, but she thinks that the only way she can do that is if she loses weight and keeps hiding her diabetes. She stars skipping meals and experimenting with her medication and sometimes ignoring it altogether.
One reason I really got pulled into the book is because it's about the life of a girl living with a disease, and it's kind of interesting learning about how she deals with the sickness. I like this story also because it doesn't tell just about her illness, but it tells about her whole life. My favorite part was when she passed out before a play because she was making herself throw up, and she was juggling with her insulin treatments. I think that if you like to read books about teenagers struggling with a disease than you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars All the Days of Her Life .......2006-04-28

Lacey Duval has diabetes, and she starts to lose control of them. Lacey is a girl of a family that is pretty much torn apart because her parents are divorced. Her therapist thinks that she lost control of her diabetes because she wanted to get back at her parents. Then she told him the real problem that she wanted to lose some weight and lost control. Lacey learns that Jeff came to town and she was really happy about that. Lacey then wants to get to know Jeff more, but he doesn't care as much about her as he used to. Lacey then plans to go to the Jenny House for the summer, but does she go? Nobody knows yet.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-01-17

All the days of her life is a great story about how bad stuff happens but you can still make the best of it. I really enjoyed this book, I am planing to read all the books by this author.

4 out of 5 stars Painfully realistic issues.......2005-11-28

Even though I don't have diabetes, I get what Lacey was going through with. I'd give anything to be with the in crowd, have the most popular boy in school be my boyfriend, and drop a few pounds. Every girl in high school wants that. Who wouldn't? It's just harder and more dangerous to achieve when you have diabetes.

This was the first "One Last Wish" book I've read with Lacey, but I really liked it. Even though I didn't exactly know what happned with Lacey and Jeff the summer before.

Lacey is 15, and really wants to fit in. But she has diabetes, and is afraid of what kids will think if they know. She decides to keep it a secret, and just pretend she doesn't have it. Lacey wants to be thin, because she has an absurd notion that she isn't. To get thin, she starts giving herself less insulin, and sometimes "forgets" to give herself insulin. She's sure that when she's thin, the popular group will fully accept her. What she doesn't take into consideration is her health.

Then Jeff comes into the picture. He transfered to college in Miami. Lacey has so many mixed feelings for him. She wants to be with him, yet she doens't.

This book is good, even though it's too short. And I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending of Jeff and Lacey. Even though we all know it's inevetable they'll end up together. And because the next book says so, but you know... lol

              Book Description

The auditory system has a remarkable ability to adjust to an ever-changing environment. The six review chapters that comprise Plasticity of the Central Auditory System cover a spectrum of issues concerning this ability to adapt, defined by the widely applicable term "plasticity". With chapters focusing on the development of the cochlear nucleus, the mammalian superior olivary complex, plasticity in binaural hearing, plasticity in the auditory cortex, neural plasticity in bird songs, and plasticity in the insect auditory system, this volume represents much of the most current research in this field. The volume is thorough enough to stand alone, but is closely related a previous SHAR volume, Development of the Auditory System (Volume 9) by Rubel, Popper, and Fay. The book fully addresses the difficulties, challenges, and complexities of this topic as it applies to the auditory development of a wide variety of species.

                  Book Description

This volume summarizes the state of development of auditory system neuroscience. This field is in an era of remarkable progress, particularly in the field of plasticity of the auditory system. New advances in understanding auditory system plasticity, based substantially on a large and growing body of results from animal experiments, are related to innumerable new insights into the physiology and pathology of speech and music perception and production generated by behavioral studies, and from the application of modern brain imaging techniques. We are living in an especially exciting period of research, marked by an almost astounding rate of advance in the development of our understanding of the hearing brain. The extraordinary series of reports published in this book document this rapid, further advance.

                    Description:
Neural processes underlying pitch perception at the level of the cerebral cortex are influenced by language experience. We investigated whether early, pre-attentive stages of pitch processing at the level of the human brainstem may also be influenced by language experience. The human frequency following response (FFR), reflecting sustained phase-locked activity in a population of neural elements, was used to measure activity within the rostral brainstem. FFRs elicited by four Mandarin tones were recorded from native speakers of Mandarin Chinese and English. Pitch strength (reflecting robustness of neural phase-locking at the pitch periods) and accuracy of pitch tracking were extracted from the FFRs using autocorrelation algorithms. These measures revealed that the Chinese group exhibits stronger pitch representation and smoother pitch tracking than the English group. Consistent with the pitch data, FFR spectral data showed that the Chinese group exhibits stronger representation of the second harmonic relative to the English group across all four tones. These results cannot be explained by a temporal pitch encoding scheme which simply extracts the dominant interspike interval. Rather, these results support the possibility of neural plasticity at the brainstem level that is induced by language experience that may be enhancing or priming linguistically relevant features of the speech input.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CHEMISTRY OF CELLULOSE By J. T. MARSH M. Sc., F. I. C., F. T. I. and F. C. WOOD Ph. D., F. I. C., F. T. I. With a Foreword by SIR KENNETH LEE SECOND EDITION LONDON CHAPMAN HALL LTD. 11 HENRIETTA STREET W. C. 2 1942 First published, 1938 Second and Revised Edition, 11942 PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY THE LONDON AND NORWICH PRESS, LIMITED, NORWICH BOUND BY G. AND J. KITCAT, LTD., LONDON Flexiback Binding Patent, No. 441294 To THOSE WHb HAVE DONE THE WORK DESCRIBED IN THESE PAGES FOREWORD CELLULOSE chemistry is a subject for the scientific expert, and hence I cannot attempt to add anything to the substance of this book. It has, however, been my experience that the close correlation of science to the textile industry has already had a profound effect on its development, and that a closer bond between the two is the surest way to promote future advances. The more science is applied, the greater the number of scientific workers engaged in probing the secrets of cellulose chemistry, the brighter will be the outlook for our industry. A knowledge of the literature on the subject is of the greatest importance to the research worker the scientific journals cover a wide range of subjects, whilst patent specifications are difficult to find and to read. Those concerned with indus trial production and process control have not the time for such reading, whilst the young research worker now entering the industry finds an overwhelming mass of literature before him. This book should therefore present a very valuable introduction to the subject of cellulose chemistry, and should be of great assistance in these two cases. To those who wish to obtain a wider general knowledge of the subject it should also prove most useful. KENNETH LEE. MANCHESTER, May, 1938. PREFACE OF making many books there is no end but we trust that no excuse is needed for the present work. The subject of cellulose chemistry is not among the simplest of studies, but the important advances of recent years have clarified it to such an extent that we feel the time is ripe for publishing a relatively simple book which may act as a guide to the younger chemists who are entering those branches of our great industries which are concerned with cellulose. It is to the ordinary chemist that we hope this elementary account will appeal for this reason we have tried to maintain some sort of balance between the descriptions of the purely scientific aspect of the subject and the practical applications. The narrative, in many cases, has a slight historical flavour in order to emphasise the course of development, but we have not adhered to the chronological sequence of description. We have given no bibliography, as the source-books and journals are mentioned as occasion arises. Our guide-book is not intended as a substitute for the original literature which should always be consulted by the student. Nevertheless, we feel that a good general knowledge should first be acquired rather than a detailed mastery of any particular section, for experience has shown that successful research need not necessarily depend on an initial deep knowledge of a subject, which is often only acquired during the actual course of research. We wish to express our indebtedness for the loan of blocks to Sir Robert Pickard, F. R. S. of the B. C. I. R. A., Dr. Gibson of the L. I. R. A., Professor Haworth, F. R. S. of Birmingham University, Dr. Doree of the Chelsea Polytechnic, Dr. Neale and Mr. Slattery of the Manchester College of Technology. Professor Kurt Meyer of the University of Geneva not only lent us a number of blocks but also his own model of cellulose, which is gratefully acknowledged. A number of photographs were kindly given to us by Dr. Kling of Bohme-Fettchemie, Dr. Astbury of Leeds University, xi Xll PREFACE and Miss Alexander of the Tootal Broadhurst Lee, Company, Limited we are grateful for this interest in our work...

                            Book Description

Spin glasses are magnetic materials. Statistical mechanics, a subfield of physics, has been a powerful tool to theoretically analyse various unique properties of spin glasses. A number of new analytical techniques have been developed to establish a theory of spin glasses. Surprisingly, these techniques have turned out to offer new tools and viewpoints for the understanding of information processing problems, including neural networks, error-correcting codes, image restoration, and optimization problems. This book is one of the first publications of the past ten years that provide a broad overview of this interdisciplinary field. Most of the book is written in a self-contained manner, assuming only a general knowledge of statistical mechanics and basic probability theory. It provides the reader with a sound introduction to the field and to the analytical techniques necessary to follow its most recent developments.

                            Book Description

An old woman lives still among the broken slopes of the mountains in the land of the Tarahumara Indians. No one knows exactly where. She is sometimes seen standing along the highway near El Paso, hauling wood near Oaxaca, or even hitching a ride on a semi rig. She is the bone woman, the gatherer, La Loba. She collects bones, especially those of wolves. When she has collected enough bones to make a whole wolf, she sings over the skeleton, and it begins to grow flesh and fur. She sings some more and the wolf becomes strong; then it breathes. La Loba keeps singing and soon the wolf leaps up and runs off while the desert world trembles. And when a ray of the sun, or the moon, strikes it at just the right time and place, it turns into a woman, a laughing woman, who you may see running toward the horizon. In La Loba's cycle of death and rebirth and her metamorphosis from crone to life-giving mother to laughing maiden, we catch just one glimpse of the timeless allure and mystery of the Goddess. From the fertile earth mothers of the ancient world to the modern revival of interest in Wicca, or witchcraft, images and tales of the Female Divine have flourished and waned, intimidated, comforted, and inspired women and men from time immemorial. In Goddess, authors David Leeming and Jake Page gather some 75 of the most potent and meaningful of these tales in an extraordinarily rich and readable introduction to this divine figure as she has emerged from prehistory to the present. Told as a biography, we follow Goddess from her first Ice Age appearances as the all-encompassing, all-giving, and all-taking Earth, to her re-emergence as a powerful force in the myths of modern religion, psychology, and science. In tales of the Changing Woman of the Navajos and of Hera, Pandora, Eve, and Lilith, we see her traduced and sublimated by rising, and then, dominant, patriarchical cultures and civilizations, but never totally suppressed. In familiar and unfamiliar myths, Goddess comes alive, pulsing with her own energy, irrepressible behind her many cultural masks. She can be the Universe itself, the source of all being, the holy Virgin, the Earth-Mother nurturer, the madly hysterical destroyer, the femme fatale, or the consort or mother of God. She is presented here not as myth, but as a true archetype, a potential being who exists in all of us, a force who long preceded her male counterpart as an appropriate metaphor for the Great Mystery of existence. As compelling as any novel, Goddess is also a journey into the human heart. Observing Goddess over the centuries--worshipped, belittled, denied, rediscovered--we gain new insight into the changing role of women, our continuing development as a species, and our deepest concerns about ourselves, our world, and the human destiny.

Short, easy to read book on the goddess myth. Lots of references and illustrations. If not part of your collection it probably should be.

This is a nice book for a references about diferences Goddess.
The only thing I did'nt like was, that book don't have pictures or illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful little book!.......2002-01-09

The men who wrote this book are very feminist. It is touching the way they refer to Her as Goddess; not once do they slip up and call her "the" Goddess. This shows that She is as important to Her followers as God is to his.The strength of this book is its beautiful writing. Most of the myths are short enough, pretty enough, and reverent enough to read out loud durning rituals.Another thing that i loved about this book is its multi-cultural scope. Despite being an avid reader of books on Goddess for 12 years-this book has some myths and some goddesses that i have not heard of before.i highly reccomend this book. The language is delicous and each goddess is portrayed not as a figure from myth but as a diety worthy of worship.

4 out of 5 stars The Bullfinch's Myhtology of the Female Divine.......1998-06-19

This book, and its companion, God, are excellent sources for all people who are exploring their spirituality, and even better for those that aren't. The authors present their brief introductions to the Goddess concept and let short retellings from world mythology supply their evidence, a system which both helps the book flow and makes the reader a more apt critic of the authors' interpretations of the myth. Granted, the retellings are short and the book's subject matter is too broad to be discussed in depth, but it presents its ideas of coherence and unity powerfully and respectfully, satisfying to both the mind and the soul. I recommend it wholeheartedly, especially if you are a Neopagan, this book makes an excellent outsiders' view of a subject dear to our hearts.

                            4 out of 5 stars A great, easily-read introduction to Goddess.......1997-03-15

Although the authors are two men, Leeming, a professor of English and Mythology, and Page, a science writer and novelistÑthey believe the story of Goddess belongs to and is important to everyone, regardless of gender. And, their intent, to present a "coherent tale of Goddess," is successfully realized without entering into gender politics. With short stories, and equally short introductions, the reader is introduced to all the favorites as well as many lessor-known Goddesses such as the Apache "Vagina Girls." For in-depth detail on the Goddesses, one must go to other books, but while reading this overall "biography" of the archetype, one can begin to sense the unity of the archetype that has existed in all parts of the world with that which is within.
