Book Description
Two Western doctors assembled this updated edition of a massive sixteenth-century document, annotating their translation with their own observations. A treasury of tried-and-true wisdom from centuries of practical experience, it has served as a basis for modern-day organic medicine and has enormous value for practitioners of alternative healing methods.

Customer Reviews:
We love these Travel Smart books........2007-06-08
AAA and Mobil Travel guides are just OK -- they list a million things to see and places to go, but they don't do a very good job steering you toward the best stuff or planning how to spend each day of your vacation. This can be important, when you're visiting a place you've never been before and may never get to see again. These Travel Smart books contain a much shorter list, point you just toward the good stuff, and help you figure out how to spend each day. Right down to "eat breakfast here, then go there". We haven't been disappointed yet!
Book Description
City Smart: Dallas/Fort Worth introduces you to the best both cities have to offer - whether you're just visiting or a resident looking for something new to do. Fort Worth local Sharry Buckner knows what she's talking about and has personally selected the best places to eat, shop, sightsee, and simply hang out. With tips on Tex-Mex food, dance clubs for teens, and hiking trails this down-home guide gives you the inside scoop to let you feel like a local.

Dont Buy This Book.......2004-02-15
This book is by far the worst travel book I have ever read.
If you are a serious traveler, this book is not for you.
If you are someone on a Sunday outing go ahead buy it.
This book doesnt give you any info on ways to reach places by public transportation. The restaurant reviews arent much help and the author spends too much time reviewing Fort Worth.
Also the entertainment section is horrible. There is much more to do in Dallas than the book reflects.
In Gomer Pyle style, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.......2001-01-28
Wow. I've been in Dallas/Irving area fifty years (since 6 mo. old) and when I picked up this book to take a look, I was amazed at all the places to go I didn't know about! I bought a copy and have enjoyed browsing its offerings! What a great gift for anyone new to the area. What am I talking about? I'm not new! It'll make a great gift - period! A must though for newcomers - hey, real estate people, what an idea for new home buyers coming into the area! And there's so many different great tid bits of info. Thanks to the author for all her work making the Metroplex a breeze to enjoy!
Right in my own backyard.......2001-01-24
I picked this book up as a gift for a client who was staying a week in Dallas and had never been to Texas before. He went through the book and picked places he wanted to go, and apparently had a grand time, because he still raves about his trip.
As I didn't get the book back, I had to purchase another copy and was surprised to see how many interesting places there are in the Metroplex that even I didn't know about (and I've lived here for nearly forever.) I've since recommended this book to my company for future visiting clients and trainees.
Great source of information, excellent organization and primo insight on "must sees".

Home to the University of Texas and Huston-Tillotson College (the oldest African-American college in the nation), Austin boasts a highly educated population. This newly revised guide highlights cultural events, museums, music clubs, and beautiful natural surroundings.
Customer Reviews:
A real stand-out compared to other Austin guides........2002-05-02
Like the last reviewer, I too was considering a work-related move to Austin. I wanted a guide book that could give me a quick and easy entry into what Austin had to offer a tourist and potential resident. This guide book gave me a good overview of Austin while I was there -- it wasn't just an index or list of area attractions and businesses: It contained a lot of useful 'tips' interspersed through out the book and the maps were clear and well integrated with the text.
I had some reservations before I bought this because the maps were not in color. However, the maps were clear and concise. Rather than clutter up 1 map with icons for restaurants, attractions, etc., the maps were repeated in each section of the guide, and contained only the relevant data for that section; this made using them very easy. I'd also say that the authors of the book were very generous with the number and variety of maps.
Overall, the design of the book made reading and finding information easy. Good use of bold type made flipping through and finding stuff easy too.
In the end, I got the Austin job and will be moving there soon. As a future Austin resident, I think this will still be the only guide I need.
Good for potential residents.......1999-10-02
I am considering a move to Austin and found a lot of useful information in this guidebook. I used it to plan my freetime following a job interview in the city and found it right on target regarding the restaurant reviews. Good buy!
An indispensable guide to a multifaceted city........1998-10-06
"City Smart Austin" is an indispensable guide to aculturally-rich and multifaceted city.
Austin natives EleanorS. Morris, Paris Permenter, and John Bigley wisely present the city in six geographic zones. And they cover everything from Austin basics (weather, homes, people, etc) and day trips to recreation areas and where to shop/eat/stay.
Whether they are writing about "BookPeople" (one of the largest bookstores in the U.S.) or the 'Dillo Express (one of the city's laudable forms of public transportation), the authors speak with warmth and home-town credibility.
I was especially pleased with their accessment of Austin's accommodations. Yes, they duly point out the grandeur of the historic Driskill Hotel. But they also note the convenience and affortability of the La Quinta at the Capitol, which not only has a gracious new manager, but renovated "Gold Metal Rooms," which have new decor, 25-inch TVs, and speaker phones!
The book's maps are clear and helpful, with inset-captions for easy referral; and the b&w photos--while a tad too small--are often bright and sharp.
An added treat of "City Smart Austin" are the valuable coupons in the back of the book. Don't miss them!
Great look at a fun city!.......1998-07-18
I am a longtime Austin resident and discovered some hidden treasures about my city in this useful guide! I will be referring to this book often when I have company in from out of town or when I'm looking to enjoy a little one day vacation without leaving Austin's borders!

GOOD RECS; SOME INCORRECT INFO THOUGH.......2005-07-24
I found this book to have some good recommendations and it definitely offers a good idea of what San Antonio has to offer but there is plenty of incorrect information in the book as well (wrong addresses, wrong hours, wrong info, etc.). All in all a great place to start but information needs to be verified before acting upon.
Oops, found an error.......2002-02-06
Don't call the number for La Fogata listed in this book. It is not the correct number, and the poor guy who it belongs to is rather sick of the whole thing. Other than that, it is a fine guide book. Used it while in San Antonio, and it did fine.
Very helpful and humorous........1999-01-07
Just returned from a beautiful trip to San Antonio. With the help of this book, I saw every key attraction and had a little background information on each. Easy to read, with a sense of humor. Very helpful to read this before you go.

Book Description
The sixties may have come to other parts of North Carolina, but with Mama pregnant again, Daddy struggling to find work, and nine siblings underfoot, nobody in the holler has much time for modern-day notions. Especially not twelve-year-old Livy Two, aspiring songwriter and self-appointed guardian of little sister Gentle, whose eyes don't work so good yet. Even after a doctor confirms her fears, Livy Two is determined to make the best of Gentle's situation and sets out to transform the family's scrappy dachshund into a genuine Seeing Eye dog. But when tragedy strikes, can Livy Two continue to stay strong for her family?
Customer Reviews:
A great family story.......2007-06-11
In Gentle's Holler Kerry Madden deftly portrays the difficult lives of this family of ten without losing the musical voice of the 12-year-old heroine. As readers see "Livy Two" grow through her new perceptions of her parents, her older siblings and her blind baby sister, they can experience many wondrous complexities of family dynamics. It's a great read in the tradition of Betsy Byars. Readers who enjoy Gentle's Holler might also enjoy Danger, Long Division, in which a modern Maryland latch-key kid discovers that she has what it takes to help her baby brother who has special needs.
A Sweet and Gentle Story.......2007-03-28
In GENTLE'S HOLLER, Kerry Madden introduced young readers to Olivia (better known as Livy Two) Weems, a twelve-year-old with a passion for books and music. Livy has eight siblings of various ages and tempermants, a sweet mama, and a starry-eyed daddy. Money's tight - Daddy's music fills the heart and ears more than it fills the pocketbook - but the Weems make do, and their household is always bursting with family, love, and music. Livy Two also sings and plays music, often writing songs about the struggles her family has faced and the hardships they've overcome. The story is set in 1960s North Carolina, a beautiful backdrop for this artistic and energetic family.
As the tale progresses, Livy Two watches carefully over Gentle, the next-to-youngest one in the family, who has always had difficulty with her eyes. Meanwhile, the eldest son, Emmett, looks beyond the holler and fixes his eyes on Ghost Town in the Sky, a new place on the top of a mountain where he might be able to get a job. Livy Two's trips to the lending library truck connect her with another kind soul, Miss Attickson, who encourages Livy's voracious appetite for novels and poetry.
GENTLE'S HOLLER is the first in The Maggie Valley Trilogy. The second book, LOUISIANA'S SONG, is just as precious as the first book. I can't wait to read JESSIE'S MOUNTAIN, the final book in the trilogy. This series will be loved by kids and families who enjoyed the All-of-a-Kind Family books by Sidney Taylor, The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall, and Cheaper by the Dozen and Belles on Their Toes by Frank B. Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.
Wonderful story for young readers.......2006-08-28
My family thoroughly enjoyed this story. We read it aloud as a family with my seven-year-old and nine-year-old begging some nights to read one more chapter. The story moves along nicely and though it deals with some sadness -- a sister who died as a baby and a sister's blindness -- the story was really one of hope. The character's were interesting and the music aptitude of the family brought a sense of hope to their world.
A young girl's struggles in the 1960s.......2006-06-26
Livey 2 (named after her late sister whom she talks and prays to) struggles through life in North Carolina during the 1960's. She has lots of sisters and not much food for the whole family, so she's constantly hungry. But the biggest problem of all is that her younger sister, Gentle, is blind. This story about a musician, (Livey 2 plays the guitar), is not as sad as it sounds. It uses no bad language and is child appropriate. I thought the characters were realistic and the plot was very interesting.
A Genuinely Wonderful Story!.......2005-07-08
I read all the time and this book grabbed me from beginning to end! I read it in a day! It's a wonderful story about dreams and family. The descriptions are beautiful and realistic. You'll feel like you're right there with Livvy Two in Maggie Valley. She's the kind of heroine we need these days; loving, caring, determined, and brave. I wish she was my big sister! I'm looking forward to more stories from Gentle's Holler. Keep them coming!

Book Description
This volume contains invited and refereed papers based upon presentations given in the IMA workshop on Computational Modeling in Biological Fluid Dynamics during January of 1999, which was part of the year-long program "Mathematics in Biology." This workshop brought together biologists, zoologists, engineers, and mathematicians working on a variety of issues in biological fluid dynamics. A unifying theme in biological fluid dynamics is the interaction of elastic boundaries with a surrounding fluid. These moving boundary problems, coupled with the equations of incompressible, viscuous fluid dynamics, pose formidable challenges to the computational scientist. In this volume, a variety of computational methods are presented, both in general terms and within the context of applications including ciliary beating, blood flow, and insect flight. Our hope is that this collection will allow others to become aware of and interested in the exciting accomplishments and challenges uncovered during this workshop.

Book Description
This proceedings volume contains foundation of anticipation in any system and applications in all the areas of science: economy, biology, cognition, physics, robotics, etc. Strong anticipatory systems deal with systems which behave in taking into account past, present and computed future states. The new mathematical and computational tools of incursion and hyperincursion are developed in this way. In weak anticipatory systems, the future states are predicted from models of these systems. The domain of computing anticipatory systems is becoming a new frontier of science.
Customer Reviews:
A new kind of science..........2002-07-31
I have read many of papers contained in the three CASYS conference proceedings and have been quite impressed with the direction anticipatory systems research is heading. Anticipatory systems research is derived from Robert Rosen's seminal works "Anticipatory Systems", "Life Itself" and "Essays on Life Itself"; these were basically ignored (much like Rashevsky's work prior to Rosen) but slowly its value is being realized.
Anticipatory systems acknowledge that real processes, particularly life, do not obey causal laws required by our present 'religion' of reductionism. This can be seen in all aspects of science whether one looks at attempts at cybernetics, algorithmic information theory, physics or biology (to name a few). We have consistently run up against the same roadblocks to progress since our present way of thinking excludes the possibility of ever answering some very basic questions.
There is a lot of interest here from Dubois' works in hyperinclusion (although I do not agree with his interpretation of Rosen) to Ekdahl's excellent research on the link between induction and anticipatory systems. Nadin's work is quite good for someone just beginning to get interested in this area. Many aspects of science that are complete mysteries now begin to make much more sense whether it is the Feynman-Wheeler theories of QED, understanding Shnoll's results or learning theories in general when one sees that the problem is our clinging to linear causality.
It is quite interesting to contrast this to Wolfram's pinnacle of ironic science, "A New Kind of Science" - he has no 'new' science, just more of the old stuff. Unfortunately his money has helped him generate lots of hype about fluff when there is much more exciting and genuinely new work being done as it has in the past: quietly and thoughtfully.
Customer Reviews:
mexican revolution.......2002-10-18
elena garro's depiction of post revolutionary rural mexico is an epic that must be read. although she is a little known author, outside of the literary world, she is one of the most influential novelists of latin america. Recuerdos del Porvenir is exceptional, the catastrophe of the revolution and its impact on pueblo life is authentic and poignant while Garro herself introduces the world to magical realism.
for those of you who have read 100 years of solitude, Garro's story precedes and has been noted as the influential work for GGM's own work many years later.
