      Book Description

Welcome to the Jungle brings a black British perspective to the critical reading of a wide range of cultural texts, events and experiences arising from volatile transformations in the politics of ethnicity, sexuality and "race" during the 1980s. The ten essays collected here examine forms of cultural expression in black film, photography and visual art exerging with a new generation of black British artists, and interprets this prolific creativity within a sociological framework that reveals fresh perspectives on the bewildering complexity of identity and diversity in an era of postmodernity. Kobena Mercer documents a wealth of insights opened up by the overlapping of Asian, African and Caribbean cultures that constitute Black Britain as a unique domain of diaspora.

As a result of the turbulent displacements of the 1980s, new forms of hybrid identity came out of the margins while others were progressively de-centered. Looking at the United States and Britain as societies of the black diaspora, ambiguous manifestations of this dynamic are critically examined across a variety of surfaces from Michael Jackson's ethnic androgyny to the cut`n'mix profusion of post-essentialist sensibility expressed in the medium of black hairstyles.

4 out of 5 stars Mercer is the man (if I remember correctly)........2004-06-02

Both professors and students quote hooks, Hall, and Bhabha all the time, yet few refer to Mercer's work. I find this to be such a wasted opportunity. In this collection, he writes on diverse topics such as Robert Mapplethorpe, black hair, Michael Jackson, etc. I saw him once in person and he kinda reminds me of a black George Michael. This was strong cultural studies that I think many black thinkers and gay thinkers (and when I say "thinkers" that includes "paper writers) should find useful. I don't agree with all of his conclusions. Still, there is so much here that would make any paper in cultural criticism look very well informed. My only question for the author would be: "When are readers going to get more great works of yours like this out there?!"

An elite school. Glamorous students who have fancy cars and mansions for homes (and all the haughty attitude to go with it). This is Katie O'Connor's fabulous new life since her family's recent move to Brentwood –– a perfect opportunity for a fresh start, at least in theory.

The only time she can overlook the hostility of her classmates is when they share the stage for plays. Onstage, directed by her awesome drama teacher, Tess, she has the confidence and talent that she cannot seem to muster in her everyday life. And it doesn't hurt that one of Katie's fellow actors is smart and cute and interested in her. But beneath the glossy surface, there are secrets buried deep, even in Katie's own past.

Nightmares and dark memories continue to plague Katie's consciousness, and in order to deal with the present, she needs to come to terms with the past. If only she could remember it.

5 out of 5 stars A sensitive, evocative treatment of the topic of sexual abuse .......2007-08-07

In spare and poignant prose, Davida Hurwin Wills weaves a story about coming to terms with an unthinkable truth and the redemptive powers of courage, honesty, and love. This book is a powerful read for anyone who has been through trauma or knows someone who has. For parents, it's an inside look at the lives of teenagers and for teens, it is a gentle yet fearless treatment of an experience in which it is easy to feel so very alone.

5 out of 5 stars Circle it stunning........2006-08-26

Circle the Soul Softly wraps itself around the reader like a shawl woven from sweet and sorrowful strands of truth. It holds you, and gently insists you hear what it means to be human. Why do we feel what we feel? What are the stories behind our behavior? These universal themes are explored in Davida Wills Hurwin's beautifully expressive, skilled prose. Circle the Soul Softly offers a deeply intimate psychological portrait of how a young women begins to lift the covers off her memory and reveal a past she had forgotten. The covers are heavy. They come off slowly. And when the truth of her childhood emerges, Hurwin is clear with the reader; revelation is just the first step in healing. This novel does not succumb to the "quick fix". Integrating (into the present) our wounds, our grief, our past... takes time. In this compassionate, expertly crafted work of fiction, Ms. Hurwin gets at the deeper truth. I read it one sitting a week ago, and still feel held in its soulful circle.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for your night at home.......2006-08-19

I've read all oh Ms. Hurwins books and this one may just be my favorite (although A Time for Dancing has become a young womens classic). In Circle the Soul Softly Hurwins writng is complex yet straightforward, always progressing the plot and deepening the characters emotional life while using language that any women would love to luxuriate in. I was so enthralled I read it in one sitting! I would highly reccomend it for anyone and give a special recomendation to young women who have had traumitic life experiences. Nothing in the world is better then reading about someone elses experiences confirming that you are not alone during the hardest times of your life.

5 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt read for young adult and above.......2006-08-14

I have read all of Ms Hurwin's books and enjoyed them. This is possibly my favorite. The story was compelling and moved along at a rapid pace. I read it in two sittings. I couldn't wait to see what emotionally would develop on the next page. The characters were clearly drawn, and Ms. Hurwin found each of their unique voices. I particularly liked the ending (often people can't decide how to end a book). I won't give it away. I found the book's sense of compassion and empathy for the human condition, and the difficulties of complex relationships most satisfying. A read that left my heart feeling full.

5 out of 5 stars an eloquent telling of young girl's journey through sordid dreams and relatible teenage circumstances........2006-08-10

circle the soul softly is a true elixir of the adolescent psyche. The telling of foreign surroundings and unfamiliar lifestyles becomes only a backdrop for the beautiful unfolding of a young girl's mysterious past. After beginning with the sibling banter of young Katie and her brother Michael, the pages quickly turn and you find yourself rapidly seeking the undying darkness that so haunts our heorine. I read this in one night! This novel is an excellent read for both adolescent girls and those who have well exceeded the years of lip gloss and prom dates.

                          5 out of 5 stars Haunting & Realistic.......2006-01-17

When fifteen-year-old Katie O'Connor moves to Brentwood, all she wants to do is to fit in with people at her new high school. But she experiences terrifying hallucinations that haunt her and causes her to space out, disrupting her life. Did these things really happen to her, or is it just a figment of her blurry childhood imagination?

Circle the Soul Softly is a haunting and realistic story. It shows how someone's outer appearance can deceive you, and kept me turning the pages until I found the truth of what happened to Katie.

                            Book Description

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a biological Janus, at once a highly competent taxonomist in a traditional mold and a bold, almost visionary, philosopher of nature who aspired to contrive an all-embracing "physics of the earth" by sheer force of intellect. Lamarck is generally remembered only for his ideas about the inheritance of acquired characters, ideas he did not originate or take special credit for, ideas that were only one part of his broad theory of evolution. In this, the first modern book-length study of Lamarck, Richard Burkhardt examines the origin and development of Lamarck's theory of organic evolution, the major theory prior to Darwin.

First published in 1962, this classic book remains a remarkably complete introduction to various aspects of the representation theory of finite groups. One of its main advantages is that the authors went far beyond the standard elementary representation theory, including a masterly treatment of topics such as general non-commutative algebras, Frobenius algebras, representations over non-algebraically closed fields and fields of non-zero characteristic, and integral representations. These and many other subjects are treated extremely thoroughly, starting with basic definitions and results and proceeding to many important and crucial developments. Numerous examples and exercises help the reader of this unsurpassed book to master this important area of mathematics.

                                    Book Description

The monograph aims at a general outline of old and new results on representations of finite-dimensional algebras. In a theory which developed rapidly during the last two decades, the lack of textbooks is the main impediment for novices. Therefore special attention is paid to the foundations, and proofs are included for statements which are elementary, serve comprehension or are scarcely available. In this manner the authors try to lead the reader up to a point where he can find his way through the original literature. The discourse is centered around the fairly complete theory of finitely-represented posets and algebras. The monograph provides many examples and all the needed background on decomposition theorems, quivers, almost split sequences and derived categories. It includes a survey on representations of tame and wild quivers, lists of critical algebras and a proof of the old conjectures of Brauer and Thrall.

                                      Book Description

This monograph develops the Gröbner basis methods needed to perform efficient state-of- the-art calculations in the cohomology of finite groups. Results obtained include the first counterexample to the conjecture that the ideal of essential classes squares to zero. The context is J.F. Carlson's minimal resolutions approach to cohomology computations.

                                        Book Description

These proceedings are from the Tenth International Conference on Representations of Algebras and Related Topics (ICRA X) held at The Fields Institute. In addition to the traditional "instructional" workshop preceding the conference, there were also workshops on "Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory", "Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory", and "Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras". These workshops reflect the latest developments and the increasing interest in areas that are closely related to the representation theory of finite dimensional associative algebras. Although these workshops were organized separately, their topics are strongly interrelated.

The workshop on Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory surveyed various recently established connections, such as those pertaining to the classification of vector bundles or Cohen-Macaulay modules over Noetherian rings, coherent sheaves on curves, or ideals in Weyl algebras. In addition, methods from algebraic geometry or commutative algebra relating to quiver representations and varieties of modules were presented.

The workshop on Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory surveyed developments in finite dimensional algebras and infinite dimensional Lie theory, especially as the two areas interact and may have future interactions.

The workshop on Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras dealt with the different approaches of using the representation theory of quivers (and species) in order to construct quantum groups, working either over finite fields or over the complex numbers. In particular, these proceedings contain a quite detailed outline of the use of perverse sheaves in order to obtain canonical bases.

The book is recommended for graduate students and researchers in algebra and geometry.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Tsukuba International Conference on Representations of Algebras and Related Topics (fifth ICRA), held at the University of Tsukuba, August 13--18, 1990. The conference focused on the rapid development of research on representations of finite-dimensional algebras and group representations. A subset of the fifty-seven lectures are collected here, together with a number of other papers not originally presented at the conference. With contributions by some of the world's leading experts in this area, this book provides a valuable overview of the frontier of research in representations of algebras.

                                            From the reviews:
"... They (Gabriel and Roiter) are pioneers in this subject and they have included proofs for statements which in their opinions are elementary, those which will help further understanding and those which are scarcely available elsewhere. They attempt to take us up to the point where we can find our way in the original literature. ..." The Mathematical Gazette, 1993
"... The standard of this text is high and will be definitely appreciated by the algebraic community." Monatshefte Mathematik, 1994
"..This book is very welcome because it presents some basic material and at the same time it presents some new insights of the theory. ..." Zentralblatt für Mathematik, 1996

                                              Book Description

This refereed collection of research papers and survey articles reflects the interplay of finite-dimensional algebras with other areas (algebraic geometry, homological algebra, and the theory of quantum groups). Current trends are presented from the discussions at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference at the University of Washington (Seattle).

The volume features several excellent expository articles which will introduce the beginning researcher to cutting-edge topics in representation theory. The book will also provide inspiration to researchers in related areas, as it includes original papers spanning a broad spectrum of representation theory.

                                              Features:

Work outlining significant progress on long-standing open problems.

Survey articles offering both overviews and introductions to various subfields of the topic.

Expositions reflecting the interplay between the representation theory of algebras and other fields.

                                                  Book Description

Five hundred years after his death at the stake, Girolamo Savonarola remains one of the most fascinating figures of the Italian Renaissance. This wide-ranging collection, with an introduction by historian Alison Brown, includes translations of his sermons and treatises on pastoral ministry, prophecy, politics, and moral reform, as well as the correspondence with Alexander VI that led to Savonarola’s silencing and excommunication. Also included are first-hand accounts of religio-civic festivities instigated by Savonarola and of his last moments. This collection demonstrates the remarkable extent of Savonarola’s contributions to the religious, political, and aesthetic debates of the late fifteenth century.
