                          Book Description

It's 1956, and ever since she and her mother rescued Angel Musseldorf from her abusive parents, Frankilee Baxter has been miserable. In addition to being more pretty, popular, and talented than Frankilee, Angel moves in, steals Frankilee's clothing, and begins dating the boy Frankilee likes. At the same time, Frankilee's community is struggling with the issue of school integration.

What keeps Frankilee going is her fantasy about Elvis Presley rescuing her from life in Clover, Texas. But this restless teenager is a realist and doesn't wait around for things to get worse. She devises a plan to get rid of Angel, begins a local Elvis fan club, and works to promote integration. What Frankilee doesn't bargain for is becoming involved in a burglary, an elaborate kidnapping scheme, and a shooting.

With humor and heart, Dancing with Elvis tells of one young woman's coming of age in the South during a time of change in America's history.

3 out of 5 stars High school girls.......2007-03-08

An appropriate story for female teenagers. A good example of very common
issues and emotions that many high school girls deal with. A little bit old fashioned so some older women would enjoy this read to bring back memories from their own childhoods.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but a bit over the top.............................2007-01-01

DANCING WITH ELVIS is melodramatic yet entertaining coming of age story set in the Texas Panhandle in the 1950's. Frankilee is a likeable heroine and Angel makes a truly evil villain but the ending is way too over the top and made me lose a little respect for the rest of the book. The book does do a good job of describing what life was like in the 1950's segregated South. It's not strictly a young adult book (this middle aged reader enjoyed it) but seems to have been marketed as such.

4 out of 5 stars Dancing With Elvis.......2006-12-19

Dancing With Elvis is a very interesting book. It is about a girl who "adopts" a girl from her school who is being abused. At first Frankilee is very exited about the new experience, but after a while, she learns that her new sister is not someone to be thankful for. Angel is mean, rude, and is very good at hiding it. She deceivingly takes Frakilee's role in her family and steals the affection of others. Frankilee despises Angel but is also quite jealous of her. She envies her beauty, her popularity, and her boyfriend. She is disgusted by how much Angel has although she is so mean. She wishes she had blessed with all of these things. The plot of book is somewhat confusing. It took me awhile to understand what was going on. The book was also very historic. It took place in the 1950s and it showed in the book. The author talked about the fashions, the music, the prejudiced thoughts, and much more throughout the book. It taught me a lot about this time period. This book is very interesting and I definitely recommend reading it. In the end, there is quite a shocking surprise, but you'll have to wait and read the book!

                          5 out of 5 stars She Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog.......2006-08-19

Frankilee (named Franklin Delano Roosevelt by her eccentric maternal grandfather, who named his 6 daughters after presidents) lives in the Texas Panhandle town of Clover. Bright and eager to move forward in high school the summer of 1956, the girl tries to save a peer who is being abused in her home. Frankilee's mother, a slightly ahead of her time crusader insists Frankilee save the girl, whose mother is known to be the town character and highly abusive. Angel's back and arms have a cross hatch of scars, all testaments to long term abuse.

Once they have Angelica (later nicknamed Angel) ensconsed in their home, they contend with the mother beating and kicking the girl; the father making one visit and the townspeople looking the other way as they want no truck with Angel's crazy mother. Angel is like the 1956 cover of "Hound Dog," which Elvis made famous - "they said you was high class, but that was just a lie..."

Angel is sneaky and insidious. She gradually takes over the house including one James Colton, whom Frankielee has all but set her cap for. Only Wanita, the wise housekeeper and her family see through Angel; Frankilee's parents appear entranced by her as do the girl's maternal grandparents. Angel flirts outrageously with Frankilee's grandfather; he gives her heirloom jewelry, which upsets his immediate family.

Frankilee is determined to uncover Angel's scheme, so she enlists the aid of her friend, Jerry-Fred (called "Jerry-Frank" once in Chapter 6) to join her in some investigative reporting. Jerry-Fred yearns to be Frankilee's boyfriend; she insists that they remain platonic good friends.

Angel is like a slithering serpent. She cons Frankilee's parents into paying to have her scars removed; she wheedles a puppy as a gift whom she names Elvis to needle Frankilee, who adores the King of Rock & Roll.

I like the way the issues of the late 1950s are addressed; Frankilee and her parents support integration, but the town's small minded bigots strive to maintain separate schools based on race. Wanita and her family are the direct recipients of bigotry; Wanita's oldest son was shot to death. Devastated, Wanita does not return to work for several months until Frankilee persuades her to return. Wanita and her family as well as Frankilee's father and the new coach are delightful characters who fight like soldiers against a single enemy - RACISM. Hats off to Frankilee's father!

The cast of characters are interesting and eclectic; a new teacher/coach breathes fresh air into the small-town Clover High School and his landlady, a very weird woman named Mabel Katherine Hightower provide an even wider array of interesting personalities. Mabel Katherine's story is sad, but in a way funny. Her only chance at love came when a traveling man spent a night with her; his pet monkey bit her finger which resulted in a hasty trip to emergency and removal of the finger. The story of the monkey has become part of the town legend, as well as the woman's family tree extending to a plantation in Georgia during the Civil War.

Small town bigotries and fresh progressive thinking simmer during 1956-58, the years this story covers. The ending is juddering, jarring and intense. This is an author to watch out for!

                          5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2006-03-23

This was one of the better books I've read on racism and life in the 1950's. The concrete details grounded in this novel really gave authenticity to this book and made me feel like I was experiencing the conniving Angel incident, the racism, and the other events right along with Frankilee. I, too, enjoyed the way the author employed big events of the 1950's into this story. Anybody who enjoys historical novels, as well as those on racism and with a dose of humor involved, would probably enjoy this book. Sometimes the swearing might seem too much for some people (it didn't bother me at all), but it also adds a nice quirk to the character of Frankilee. The novel spans from the year 1956 to 58 and tells the story of teenaged Frankilee after her parents take in the pathetic Angel Musseldorf. From the start, Frankilee gets bad impressions of the girl - everything from Angel's demanding new clothes and whining to naming her rambunctious dog after Frankilee's lover-boy, Elvis are enough to make a character who is truly fun to hate. I had plenty of fun hating Angel throughout this novel. And then Frankilee finds out the truth about the girl.

In short, it's a great read. I finished it off in one night and it wasn't enough. Highly recommended!

                            Book Description

Design Principles for the Immune System and Other Distributed Autonomous Systems is the first book to examine the inner workings of such a variety of distributed autonomous systems--from insect colonies to high level computer programs to the immune system. It offers insight into the fascinating world of these systems that emerge from the interactions of seemingly autonomous components and brings us up-to-date on the state of research in these areas. Using the immune system and certain aspects of its functions as a primary model, this book examines many of the most interesting and troubling questions posed by complex systems. How do systems choose the right set of agents to perform appropriate actions with appropriate intensities at appropriate times? How in the immune system, ant colonies and metabolic networks does the diffusion and binding of a large variety of chemicals to their receptors permit coordination of system action? What advantages drive the various systems to complexity, and by what mechanisms do the systems cope with the tendency toward unwieldiness and randomness of large complex systems?

                            4 out of 5 stars Agent-based modeling in medicine.......2003-01-23

Design Principles was written by a collection of authors specializing in diverse fields from computer scientists, theoretical biologist, pathologist, chemists and neurologists. The book began as a workshop held at the Sante Fe Institute in 1999 by the same name. While it is not a collection of abstracts and papers from this workshop, it did serve as the motivating factor to write the book. Design Principles starts with a description of the immune system that serves as a basic introduction both to the topic and to the biases of the multiple authors. Steven Hofmeyr offers a "gentle introduction to the immune system for researchers who do not have much background in immunology." (p.3) The chapter is titled "Introduction to the Immune System". Right off the biases of the book are exposed as Hofmeyr has a Ph.D. in computer sciences with a focus on information detection and distribution. Hofmeyr does an excellent job describing very complex biology without assuming that the reader has a background in either immunology or systems. While the author is gentle in his presentation the chapter is very dense with information which one hopes will be reiterated as one needs the information further in the book. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in pursuing agent based modeling of biological systems. This book would be particularly interesting to those pursing interests in modeling the process of immunity. My final criticism would be that the title is a bit misleading as I would suggest that the book only gives limited mention and thought to other types of autonomous systems with the exception of Bonabeau's description of control mechanisms learned from social insects and Gordon's chapter titled, "Task Allocation in Ant Colonies."

                                                      Book Description

In this new verse translation of one of the great works of French literature, Dorothy Gilbert captures the vivacity, wit, and grace of the first known Arthurian romance. Erec and Enide is the story of the quest and coming of age of a young knight, an illustrious member of Arthur's court, who must learn to balance the demands of a masculine public life--tests of courage, skill, adaptability, and mature judgment--with the equally urgent demands of the private world of love and marriage. We see his wife, Enide, develop as an exemplar of chivalry in the female, not as an Amazon, but as a brave, resolute, and wise woman. Composed ca. 1170, Erec and Enide masterfully combines elements of Celtic legend, classical and ecclesiastical learning, and French medieval culture and ideals.
In choosing to write in rhymed octosyllabic couplets-Chrétien's prosodic pattern-Dorothy Gilbert has tried to reproduce what so often gets lost in prose or free verse translations: the precise and delicate meter; the rhyme, with its rich possibilities for emphasis, nuance, puns and jokes; and the "mantic power" implicit in proper names. The result will enable the scholar who cannot read Old French, the student of literature, and the general reader to gain a more sensitive and immediate understanding of the form and spirit of Chrétien's poetry, and to appreciate the more Chrétien's great contribution to European literature.

Since about the middle of the 20th century, it has become increasingly difficult to find poetic translations of long poems. This trend has recently been reversing, with some excellent translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey -- and Ruth Harwood Cline's translations of Troyes' works joins this new and welcome trend.

Most reviews and reviewers will concentrate on the plot -- I want to focus on the translation itself. For too long there has been a philosophy of translation that does not see any value in translating poems in the forms in which they were written. With longer poems especially, more "literal" and plot-driven prose translations have been the norm. But prose is not how these works were written, and it is not how they were meant to be read or heard. They are poems, and only a poetic translation will be able to communicate the full meaning of the poem being translated. Meaning in a poem lies not just in the plot and characters, or even in the particular words used -- though all of this is true -- but also in the rhythms and rhymes, the music, of the poem. Cline's poetic translation thus translates too the music of the poems she translates. We get the full beauty of the works only when we read them the way they were meant to be read: as poems. One hopes Cline continues to translate poems of this period into English.

And now, for a slight aside: Do not read Cervantes' "Don Quixote" until you have read all of Troyes' works, for you will miss almost all the jokes and the full satirical impact of the novel.

With Arthurian Romances seemingly always staging a comeback, how nice to have a fast-read, "words-a-poppin" translation of the very first Arthurian Romance, written in Old French around 1170. What I found most intriquing was that the book essentially wrestles with the ways in which men and women define themselves when becoming partners. Erec's rather pig-headed forcing of Enide to lead the way in the forest and never speak to him has odd contemporary overtones. But they are sweet compared to the couple they meet in Erec's final quest in the book - wait until you find out who "The Joy of the Court" is. Burton Raffel's translation, even if you don't like poetry, reads like a smooth silver skate. I gave the book a "9" instead of "10" because it doesn't have any illustrations. I know it's a University Press, but come on folks, with a story about knights couldn't you throw in at least one old woodcut or something

Drawing on the work of Jacques Lacan and Slavoj Zizek, this study presents Chrétien de Troyes's Erec et Enide as a daring, sophisticated and often playful exploration of the uses of terror and anxiety that offers a response to classical and medieval debates about will and desire. The study's reflection on how Erec et Enide can be read as an exemplification of Chrétien's 'perverse art', his examination of the counterintuitive economies of desire and representation, then has far-reaching implications for our understanding of all aspects of cultural performance in the work, from court politics to sexuality to chivalric prowess to the rhetorical disciplines of persuasion and consolation. Notably, highlighting the role of transgressive performance in the assertion of sovereign power, Chrétien's tale of the Arthurian 'theatre state' suggests that it is precisely the scandalous and traumatic dimensions of utterance, action and spectacle that provide solutions to problems such as the exercise of charismatic authority. More generally, this reading of the poem hopes to throw new light on Chrétien's vision of the place of Arthur in history and more generally into his vision of the debates surrounding cultural and historical identity in the Middle Ages.
