Book Description
David Strohmaier's long career as a firefighter has given him intimate knowledge of wildfire and its complex role in the natural world of the American West. It has also given him rare understanding of the painful losses that are a consequence of fire. Strohmaier addresses our ambivalence about fire and the realities of loss to it - life, human and animal, of livelihoods, of beloved places. He also examines the process of renewal that is yet another consequence of fire, from the infusion of essential nutrients into the soil, to the sprouting of seeds that depend on fire for germination, to the renewal of species as the land restores itself.
Ultimately, according to Strohmaier, living with fire is a matter of choices, of "seeing the connection between loss on a personal scale and loss on a landscape scale: in relationship with persons, and in relationship to and with the land." We must cultivate a longer perspective, he says, accepting that loss is a part of life and that "humility and empathy and care are not only core virtues between humans but are also essential virtues in our attitudes and actions toward the earth."
Drift Smoke is a powerful and moving meditation on wildfire by someone who has seen it in all its terror and beauty, who has lost colleagues and beloved terrain to its ferocity, and who has also seen the miracle of new life sprouting in the ashes. The debate over the role and control of fire in the West will not soon end, but Strohmaier's contribution to the debate will help all of us better appreciate both the complexity of the issues and the possibilities of hitherto unconsidered solutions that will allow us to inhabit a place where fire is a natural, and needed, part of life.

Book Description
1923. Illustrated. Wherein is told the story of Philip Marsham who lived in the time of King Charles and was bred a sailor but came home to England after many hazards by sea and land and fought for the King at Newbury and lost a great inheritance and departed for Barbados in the same ship, by curious chance, in which he had long before adventured with the pirates.
Customer Reviews:
Pint-Sized Epic.......2007-03-22
This is a wonderful little tale that is categorized as children's literature but that need not be overlooked by adult audiences. I am not sure that the categorization is entirely correct, at least by modern standards - given the "mature themes" touched on in this book (lusty inn winches, drunkeness, grim executions, murder, pillaging, and singing in the round - ok, the last one was a joke). Hawes weaved a wonderfully intricate story of piracy on the high seas against a richly developed backdrop of England in the age of Charles and Cromwell, and delivered with a lavish English vernacular of the same era (or at least that's the impression). The latter element made this sometimes difficult for my kids to follow when I read this aloud to them, but no honest child can resist the swashbuckling twists and turns of this Newbury award winning classic. I don't think this is better than Treasure Island, but it ranks close.
Great pirate tale........2006-06-16
The Dark Frigate is one of the best adventure stories I've read in a while. It's the adventures of young Philip Marsham on the "Rose of Devon" with both good sailors and evil "gentlemen of fortune" (pirates).
I read this book very recently. Sometimes it was hard to get through all the old english words and they sometimes almost destroyed the whole feel of the passage. But if you can somehow get through them wihout skipping anything important, you'll just love it. It started as a historical style, then started getting all action-packed and intense. The pirates in this story are truly pirates, with brutal styles and vicious ways. Sometimes some passages were funny, but then got real serious. It also sometimes went like a mystery related to Phillip's relatives, and I'm not going to give it away. The book also has a bold style with great spirit in all sorts of passages. It's a great book, and you will remember it for a long time.
Rousing old fashioned pirate adventure.......2005-07-25
A book that is listed at reading level for 12 years and up, but I thoroughly enjoyed it at 42. This book was awarded the Newberry Medal in 1923. A tale of 17th English century life at sea, it is a rousing and realistic story. The author spent years researching ships logs, sailing accounts, and the life stories of many sailing men to get the proper flavor for his tale. A reviewer complained about the old fashioned language, but I think any book about a period in time does a disservice to young people by avoiding using the authentic accents, terminology, and phrasing of the time. To not do so is to rob the reader of the experience of joining the adventure and falling into the story completely. I think that classic period books that have been abridged into modern-speak to make them easier to read are simply talking down to readers and underestimating their capacity and curiosity to learn.
The plot is an adventure of a young man that has been on ships since he was a toddler, and the horrible and good people he interacts with after a horrible accident on land with a gun makes him a fugitive. He goes to the place he knows best, the sea. He joins a ship that is later seized by pirates. Forced to cooperate or die, he unwillingly joins them in operating the vessel but refuses to participate in their bloodthirsty pursuits. And there is action galore, storms, sea battles between ships, attacks on forts, sword fights, cannon fire, you name it.
The characters are interesting and multi-faceted, not gray cutouts but realistic... A woman in a tavern is kind and generous in the beginning, but as soon as she has nothing to gain for her kindness she turns on him viciously. A pirate leader is cold and cruel but points he "bears no ill will", like a mafia don stating before he kills that it is nothing personal, just business. And many characters are not what they seem at first. Our young hero manages to survive day by day with his own cunning, and turn the dark situation to his own gain to escape, clear his name, and discover surprising things about his own ancestors. The plot switches and turns many times, always with a new surprise around the bend. A very enjoyable story, I highly recommend.
By the way, if you have a child or adult that wants to be able to look up the sailing terminology in many of the sea tales (what's a mizzen for example), or simply wants to read more books like this one, try one of the books in my recommendations list at Amazon that has definitions and pictures for these terms, "Seafaring and Pirate books for young people", or at least try one of the following books:
"A Sea of Words", or "Traditions of the Navy", Manual of Seamanship for Boys and Seamen of the Royal Navy", and "Sailing Ships at a Glance".
hey Miss.O looky! (by Laura).......2004-02-16
The Dark Frigate is a story about a boy who goes on a journey to start a new life. The setting of this story is in England, and on the rough seas and dirty roads. Philip Marsham's father is lost at sea and he runs away to where he finds Martain and they start out on a journey. Phil finds out that Martain is not the most popular person around. They sleep over at an inn type place and sleep in the barn. They almost get shot in the woods for being on someone else's property, but are let go free. They also sleep over at Old Mother Taylor's house and board a ship with Captain Candle. Because Phil grew up around ships, he was very good at sea. Unfortunatley, their ship is slowly filling up with water. They are forced to board a pirate ship called the Rose of Devon. Phil must become part of their crew! The Rose of Devon saves his life and helps him along his journey. One day the pirates are caught with the help of Phil, and they are taken to court. Phil goes free and finally finds his grandfather has left him a fortune! He fights in a war and is on the brink of death when something amazing happens. The most extraordinary thing that Phil could not believe. You'll have to read the book to find out what it is! I think this book was pretty good. It started our slow but picked up the pace during the middle and end. It was a little hard to understand at first, but once you get it, it's very interesting! I recommend this book to people who like the sea and adventure.

Book Description
The theory of pattern formation, assumed to be applicable to all multicellular organisms, has been developed largely through the study of animal, and to a lesser extent, plant systems. Fungi, members of the third major kingdom of eukaryotes, have not been featured in these studies, although much research of fungal morphology has been undertaken with taxonomic intentions. This first account of the developmental biology of fungal morphogenesis considers whether evidence exists for the action of pattern-forming mechanisms in the development of fungal structures. Chapters on the fruit body, on a range of aspects of the hyphae and the mycelium, and on genetic control and nuclear events in morphogenesis provide new insights into the mechanisms used in fungal development.

Customer Reviews:
Dreadful.......2005-11-04
This book is so terrible I cannot even begin to describe it.
The format is unnatural and hard to get used to, especially if you're used to normal textbooks.
It introduces a few facts, but the examples are just not very good and then it gives you problems to try out and then that format continues througout the whole chapter, making the whole learning experince very odd and uneven. I found it very hard to focus on the material because of that problem.
The material is not hard to learn, if presented the right way, which this book does not do. I can't wait to sell it back.
If you want to get a real understanding of statistics and actually remember some of it, I would advise you to try another book.
I would adopt it if the course focused on business.......2004-10-17
While the authors of texts in basic statistics always claim to the contrary, there is a repetitive sameness to the books. Decades ago, general agreement was reached as to what topics should be covered in the class. Although the advances in technology have made performing computations much easier, that has not led to significant differences in content. Therefore, the only factor that differentiates texts is the style of writing and the focus and quality of the applications.
This book is advertised as being focused on how statistics is used in business, and the authors are effectively consistent in using examples applied to business. Their worked examples are almost exclusively taken from business settings and are appropriate for the current topic. The exercises follow the same pattern, they are numerous and answers to the odd-numbered ones are included in an appendix. The style of writing is at the right level for the introductory student.
Another unique feature of the book is that it is the core for a total package that has seven additional supplementary chapters. These chapters are:
*) Statistics for Quality: Control and Capability.
*) Time Series Forecasting.
*) One-Way Analysis of Variance.
*) Two-Way Analysis of Variance.
*) Nonparametric Tests.
*) Logistic Regression.
*) Bootstrapping Methods and Permutation Tests.
The supplements are separate from the core book, if you are interested in using one of the supplementary chapters, you need buy only the ones you need. This is very sensible, as the core material is generally enough to fill any semester class.
Since the statistics course that I teach is for students from all backgrounds, I will not be adopting this text for the class. However, if it was focused on the business student, I would.
It got the job done.......2003-04-27
I thought this book sufficed, but wasn't fabulous. I strongly preferred Moore and McCabe's "Introduction to the Practice of Statistics" to this book, although it didn't have a business slant to it. Moore and McCabe are certainly the way to go, though, for stats, if you have a choice at all.

From Nyet to Da: Understanding the Russians (Interact Series)
ASIN: 0897335015 |
Book Description
In 1991, Lori Cidylo shocked her Ukrainian Polish-born parents when she told them she was leaving her reporter's job on an upstate New York newspaper to live and work in the rapidly dissolving Soviet Union.
For six years she lived on a shoe-string budget in Moscow, in tiny, run-down apartments, struggling with broken toilets and indifferent landlords and coping with the daily calamities of life in Russia. Fluent in Russian, she rode on public transportation, did her own shopping and cooking, and shared the typical Muscovite's lifeunlike most Westerners who were still sequestered in the heavily guarded compounds reserved for diplomats and journalists. As the country experienced its most dramatic transformation since the Bolshevik Revolution, she realized she had stepped into a fantastical and absurd adventure.
Cidylo's wry, insightful account of what it is like for an American woman living in Russia is a dramatic tale full of insouciant laughter, in which the immediate sense of vivid experience shines on every page. With the sharp eye of an acute observer, she captures the momentous events no less than the everyday trivia: how do Russians address one another now that the familiar "comrade" is passé; or how do you find your way home in a city where the streets keep getting new names? As Russia even now continues to struggle with the Cold War's aftermath, Cidylo gives a delightful, surprising, warmly human view of post-Soviet life.

As a travel/non-fiction junkie, I chose this book after reading several other Russian based travel accounts, and found this to be one of the most interesting yet. Cidylo goes to great pains to make the reader feel that they are in the moment with her. I found her accounts of what it was like as a foreigner AND a woman to be particularly interesting. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the fact that the story did drag at points. Highly recommended otherwise.
A Dose of Russian Reality.......2004-07-26
Living in Russia is scary. By the end of every book I read about Russia, I am relieved that I don't live there. No matter how upbeat and positive the authors are, and they are all pretty optimistic, they come back home having had a huge dose of Russian reality.
Lori Cidylo is fantastically optimistic. Even though her Ukrainian parents try to tell her that Russia is no place for her, she takes her college degrees in Russian and journalism and goes to Moscow to freelance. To freelance! She gets a job at a U.S. newpaper bureau there and begins to settle in.
Nothing is easy. Finding an apartment when there are no rental listings or yellow pages is a challenge. Buying a clothes washer is a major project. Finding someone to reupholster her garish sofa is a wild goose chase. She even has to iron her dollar bills (American currency is accepted for many transactions) because no one will accept them unless they are clean and unwrinkled. And don't get her started on the problems with dating Russian men.
But all that seems trivial compared to being in Moscow during the showdown between Yeltsin and his rebellious Parliament. Cidylo dodged tanks, snipers, and thugs to get her story. Everyday life in Moscow had trained her well for being a reporter in a war zone. Having survived traffic that jumped sidewalks without regard for pedestrians and hooligans who fired automatic weapons at random, Muscovites (and Cidylo) went about their business despite the revolution, because it might go on for months, after all.
Cidylo's writing style is smooth and easy to read. Her training as a reporter is apparent. The prose is spare and free of unnecessary description. Five stars!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book........2004-06-06
I found this book at the local library and decided that it was worth the read, and it was. Lori brings to life true everyday occurances in modern-day Moscow. They are as she sees them, but a little too observatory for my tastes as I prefer to see through the eyes of my writers. Still, it was a good book and I think that any non-Russian living in Moscow can identify with its humorous, yet at the same time depressing, events of the life. (And yes, all of the clean ones ARE married).
An amusing and good read.......2003-05-26
The book isn't perfect, but it doesn't need to be. It tells about the foibles that the author ran into during her time in Moscow. Rather than attempting to explain everything, she focuses in on some things that occured and tells those stories. Her writing is very easy to read and follow, making the book fairly hard to put down. (I ended reading it over an 8 hour period, taking a lunch and Snood break in the middle.)
I'm sure I'll re-read this book for the sheer entertainment value...
