5 out of 5 stars An excellent ecological field book.......2000-06-19

This guide has many techniques ideal for sampling many (and possibly any) habitat type. The guide includes field sheets for easy data entry, equations to obtain key ecological standards, plus a detailed description of the many techniques with cited references. Simply a handy tool and a "must have" when working in a field of so many different sampling techniques for different habitats.

4 out of 5 stars Good at what it sets out to do.......2005-06-15

I got this book because it was one of the few available for the MN area. I was going to the Twin Cities, and I found the section on that area decidedly lacking in information. It had far less information than a standard AAA guidebook. The tradeoff is the rich history and the beautiful photography, which are what this book is touted for. I usually prefer more practical information such as prices, hours, time to allow for an attraction, guides to good shopping and dining areas, etc., and this book did not deliver on those fronts. If you want an in-depth and beautifully done history, though, this book is a good choice.

If you are a stranger to the area, you definitely have to pair this with a more practical guidebook (like AAA). I'm still looking for a good one for the Twin Cities area.

              Book Description

A fascinating glimpse into the lives of Irish Travelers in America, from a new voice in YA literature.

Welcome to Bridget’s world: Her family lives in a trailer, moving every so often; she’s engaged and her wedding is sooner than she’d like; and her parents want her to quit high school so she can help more with the family business. The problem is Bridget’s not sure the Traveler life is for her anymore. She feels guilty about pulling scams, and she’s definitely not sure she wants to get married, even though Patrick’s a good guy. But Bridget’s always been the good girl who does what she’s told, and there’s no way her parents will let her out of the wedding. And if she leaves the life, she’s out of the family for good.

Tautly written, with a riveting storyline and sympathetic characters coping with universal themes of family and social pressure, See You Down the Road will captivate readers to the very end.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-01

Bridget and her family are Travelers. They're a little-known group of people in America who travel around the country, making money in usually illegal ways, and keep to themselves, with their own traditions and way of life. People who aren't Travelers are called Country, and Travelers usually isolate themselves from these people. They don't trust them, and only interact with them to scam money off of them. Travelers only go to Country schools for a few years, just long enough to know what they need to.

Bridget is a little different from many Travelers in that way. She works Country jobs, as a cashier, and she's been going to Country schools years longer than most other Traveler teenagers. Still, though, she keeps to the Traveler way most of the time. She and her friend, Ann, make their money by ripping off the local K-mart in whatever town they're in. Her parents have arranged a marriage for her, with Ann's brother, Patrick. Her brother, Jimmy, has grown up helping their father fix driveways and roofs with watered-down sealant to make a better profit by scamming Country people.

Bridget doesn't always like her life as a Traveler. She isn't sure she wants to marry Patrick, even though he's a nice guy and she does like him, but she's never see any way out of it. Then her uncle, Big Jim, takes Bridget, Jimmy, and Patrick with him all the way to Arizona, where they'll pull off the biggest scam that Bridget's ever been involved in. They'll sell condos that don't meet the building codes, and then run off with the money. The beauty of it is, the contractor won't dare tell on them, as he's the one who hired them to sell condos that don't meet building codes.

In Arizona, Bridget has some time to think about a lot of things, and maybe even figure out what she wants. But then she makes a discovery about her family, one that could change everything for Bridget...The choice is hers, but what will she decide?

Before reading SEE YOU DOWN THE ROAD, I had never heard of Travelers. I don't think many people have, but they're real people, and reading about them was very interesting. Their way of life is very different from the way most of us live, and this is an eye-opening book. Many of us don't realize how differently some people live from us, not just in far away places but right here in the United States.

On top of that, SEE YOU DOWN THE ROAD is full of amazing characters, and is very well written. All of the characters are well drawn, realistic, and three-dimensional; even the very minor characters seem alive. The ending is not what we might expect from this sort of book, but it fits well, and is one that I really liked. It wasn't predictable, and it was still a happy ending. Whitney's ending, I felt, stayed true to the characters and flowed with the rest of the story wonderfully.

4 out of 5 stars Is the Traveler's life for Bridget?.......2004-12-01

I picked this up from my library one day to read over the summer, and I'm so glad I did. It didn't take me that long to read, because I really got into it. It is the story of a girl who's family are Travelers, like gypsies. They don't have real jobs, and they don't have permanent homes. They basically make their money by ripping people off and taking their money while doing odd jobs for them or selling items to them.

The main character Bridget starts o question whether the life of a Traveler is the one for her. She has always wondered what it would be like to live in a real house and get an important job, and have a normal family. She wouldn't have to constantly be on the run, and she could go to the same school for more than a year and make real friends. The main character also feels a bit guilty sometimes about living this dishonest life of ripping people off.

Meanwhile, Bridget is engaged to her older brother's friend Patrick, which was arranged by the parents of both families. Patrick is nice enough, and he's really hot, but Bridget wants to make her own choices about who she marries.

Then, later in the book when Bridget finds out that her family has kept a secret from her, Bridget has to make an important decision about what kind of life she wants for herself.

The ending was good on one hand, but on the other hand, I was upset with it. However, this is a great book that I recommend checking out from the library. It was interesting to learn how the "Travelers" lived.

              5 out of 5 stars a fast-paced, intriguing read!.......2004-06-29

"See you Down the Road" is an interesting story about a girl named Bridget who lives as a "traveler" or person who lives in a trailer and lives on the road. This book is filled with plot twists and turns, as well as heartbreak and hope, as Bridget questions whether the traveler lifestyle is right for her. She wonders who the mysterious woman her mother is always talking on the phone with could be. Bridget also questions her families values as they shoplift and steal from various stores and people, in order to bring in their income. She also wonders if her boyfriend Patrick is the right guy for her or not. As Bridget struggles with these questions about her life, the story moves along at a very fast-paced speed and keeps the reader intrigued throughout the whole journey. I reccommend this book for readers ages 13 and up, for it has some mature themes, but is still targeted for teenagers and young adults.

5 out of 5 stars What an engrossing read!.......2004-05-22

I really, really loved this book. I learned a lot about another culture even while reading about characters who seemed like very real, typical teenagers. The book asks a lot of difficult and intriguing questions, and it's never predictable. There are lots of surprises throughout the book. I hope to read more by this author!

5 out of 5 stars Down the Road Rules!.......2004-03-10

I picked up Kim Ablon Whitney's See You Down the Road on a Friday evening and didn't want to put it down until I finished it! Not really knowing anything about the Travelers lifestyle before reading the book, I was intrigued to learn about it and to witness Bridget's angst as she struggled with the choices she had to make about staying loyal to her family versus forging a different kind of life for herself. Bridget's character was so believable and I must say I was very pleased by the book's ending! I found myself hoping that there will be a sequel because I really liked these characters so much!
I found the writing to be so descriptive and realistic- I could really envision and feel each of the scenes, which made it a really fun read! I would (and did!) recommend this book to friends!

                    4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......1998-12-18

I just finished reading this book and it has helped me tremendously. I now know which direction to go in regards to Lewis' works. I'm not quite ready for "Mere Christianity", "The Four Loves", or even "Suprised by Joy." I know that based on the excerpts I read from this great book. I will now read "The Pilgrim's Regress" It should be good. I reccomend this book for anyone wanting to know more about Lewis and his works. Peter Kreeft does a fine job.

5 out of 5 stars Truly great primer.......1998-11-28

You can find a primer much better than this. Lewis may well be the most influential Christian of this century, and deservedly so. His writings should be read by all Christians. No one has better given Christians a real sense of how the present (the shadows) and eternity (the real thing) interrelate.

                    5 out of 5 stars I Felt Like I Was There.......2006-08-05

In Shot at and Missed Jack Myers gives such a riveting account of his personal WWII experiences that I felt like I was there. The detailed facts presented, derived largely from letters that Myers wrote to family while serving his country in Italy, bring this true story to life. Myers presents a good balance of character development, action and heroism, along with the tradegy of lost lives that war brings. I thank the author for sharing his personal experiences in such a dramatic and engaging manner.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung Heroes of World War II.......2004-10-21

As I began to read Shot At and Missed, I found myself reluctant to put it down. It is beyond my ken how the author was mentally able to bring such horrendous experiences of the past into the light of day! I am grateful for his strength of purpose, however, because I was transported into a world that I would otherwise never have realized existed. A world that used it's children to protect itself and my heart ached for that mere child who faced such horrendous odds of surviving for God and Country! Throughtout the book I felt as if I were on an emotional rollercoaster...laughing one minute at their ability to live like there was no tomorrow with the women of Italy or by playing tricks on each other. Then feeling tears well up as Jack spoke of friends falling from flak filled skies not knowing if he would ever see any of them again much less survive himself against such unspeakable odds. It is an amazing story of courage that one who has never experienced life to that extreme can only marvel at what this author must have been carrying in his soul for all these years. So little has been spoken about World War II except for historical pieces that people can finally understand in uncensored language what these brave young people went through to keep us free! I for one, will be forever grateful to these supermen for their sacrifices!

I never realized just how hazardous it was flying heavy bomber missions over Germany until I read this book. Historian Stephen Ambrose said that those bombing missions were the most hazardous combat of WWII. That's why they only had to fly 35 missions before going home.
One moment I cried as I read about those 20 year old kids getting shot down over some German war plant and then I laughed as I read about some of their hi-jinks as they let off steam in Rome and Capri. I can understand why they would do the crazy , funny things they did to compensate for the terror they had just witnessed on a bombing mission. It's a wonder any of them survived. I am sure that what few of them are still alive have nightmares about those flak filled skies. God bless them one and all, they were truly the Greatesr Generation. We will never see ther likes again. The few survivors are the last of a vanishing breed

                    5 out of 5 stars Bombardiers memoir.......2004-09-13

Myers writes his story of flying bombing missions over some of the toughest targets in German occupied Europe during 1944. When they weren't getting shot at over their targets they were chasing, and catching, the Italian signourinas. Each page demands that you continue reading to see what these young flyers do next. Odd ball characters, like Earl Ruhlin the co-pilot, keep jumping out of the story as he goes from one adventure to the next. You will laugh when you read how the navigator ends up sleeping with a 90 year old crone by mistake. Terrifying and hilarious. Dont miss "Shot at and Missed".

Congratulations to Stanley S. MacGowen for this excellent book. I most enjoyed reading it. It gives the most complete and detailed overview on the history, the leaders, and the horsemen of the 1st Confedarate Texas Cavalry Regiment (also known as the First Texas Mounted Rifles). The book covers the regimental history from the time the regiment was raised by Colonel Henry McCulloch to defend Texas frontiers against indian warriors over the time the regiment was part of the Confederate Armee under the Colonels Augustus Carl Buchel and William Overall Yager until the end of the Civil War. Even being not correct at some details such as the origin of Colonel William O. Yager (Yager was not a German immigrant. He was born in Viriginia and graduated at the Virginia Miliraty Institute) the book has a high value to all interested in the History of Texas and the War between the States.

                        Book Description

Debate surrounding affirmative action has raged for years. In his book, Professor Farron examines the history of affirmative action and exposes the fraudulent nature of its justifications. The Affirmative Action Hoax centers on universities, where ability and achievement can be clearly compared, but it also examines the damage that affirmative action causes throughout American society.

5 out of 5 stars Right on the mark,..............2007-02-20

Professor Farron's book is packed with real-life examples and official policies of how 'Affirmative Action'- or as it is called, cloaked in it's new moniker, 'Diversity'- has had discriminatory effects on people like me who happen not to be 'a person of color'. His clear descriptive quote on Diversity and its subsequent effect is so full of self evident truth that the quote alone is worth buying AND reading the whole book:

"Diversity is the most insidious and pernicious of all defenses of discrimination. The other justifications assume that discrimination is a necessary evil, a temporary expedient that is needed to produce a society in which race and ethnicity are irrelevant. Diversity assumes that discrimination is an unqualified good and that it should be perpetual."

I recommend this book to all, even 'people of color'- whatever that may mean!

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't the mainstream media trumpeting this book?.......2006-06-12

A book of this quality and undoubted importance to society should be on the front page of the New York Times Book Review. Its author should be appearing on Meet the Press. Yet, I only heard of it through internet resources. The mainstream media's censorship of truth that doesn't portray women and minorities as victim is monolithic and to society's great detriment. Read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous, riveting, and absorbing: why people lie for a good cause.......2006-03-15

This is an unusually courageous book that attempts to debunk the modern way that some people have tried to solve the "perceived problem of the unequal success of ethnic, racial and social groups", i.e. it challenges the virtues of affirmative action. If one thinks one will find here a politically correct, gentlemanly treatise, one is dead wrong. This is a hard-hitting, uncompromising intellectual assault on what the author believes are lies that have been propagated (principally) in American culture, and covered up in the media regarding affirmative action.

Farron argues that in American universities affirmative action has been used to admit intellectually inferior minority students on the grounds that such are disadvantaged or on the grounds that diversity is desirable. Farron argues that those who benefit from affirmative action are not disadvantaged and that universities have not offered the slightest proof that diversity is desirable. With critical precision Farron shows that universities have introduced non-objective admissions criteria that have ended up turning the whole conception of university as a place of academic excellence into a farce. These non-objective criteria result in gross injustices: those who are truly disadvantaged and more intelligent are passed over in favor of those who are not disadvantaged and less intelligent by every possible criterion that can be used to determine intelligence. At the heart of Farron's thesis is a single fact, proven by decades of intensive and extensive research, and unquestioned in the field of psychometry, that intelligence is genetically determined (page 79), and that it cannot be raised (95ff.) He also believes there is a direct link between intelligence and success and so essentially one should not try to solve the problem of unequal success: certain race groups are more intelligent than others and consequently will prove more successful in life. Farron is categorically opposed to racial and ethnic discrimination in any form. He argues that IF unequal success is regarded as a problem, then explicit quotas are by far the fairest and least socially harmful way to solve it.

Parents with a concern for their children's education may find comfort in these radical ideas. Farron insists that children will perform only as well as their IQ allows. He shows that things like teachers' expectations of how their students will perform, poor self esteem, large classes, the quality of the schools children attend, the number of degrees held by their teacher-all these do not effect a child's performance at school, nor do they determine their later success in life. Of course if your child has a low IQ, you may find these ideas troubling.

On the critical side, I think that many of the ideas propagated in this book may be too harsh for public acceptance at this time. That does not mean they are wrong, only that people may not be able to digest them. At times I winced at Farron's candor, but was won over by his engaging style, by his keen sense of humor, and by his painstaking research, which is flawless. This is a major work that will dominate the debate for years to come. Farron has admirably demonstrated that people will readily defend a lie if they think it is for a good cause. Readers will also want to refer to Farron's website (affirmativeactionhoax.com) that has corrections and additions to his book.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read on a Vital Subject.......2006-02-21

Somewhere in Prof. Farina's book is a line running something like, "Most Americans know what affirmative action is, and most are against it. But very few understand how serious and deep-seated this problem is."

I am privileged to have read his monographs on institutionalized prejudice throughout the world, and on 20th century holocausts. I therefore expected the best from this book, but it turned out to far exceed my expectations.

As I do, Farron considers interracial animosity the world's greatest problem.

I have read quite a bit about the negative aspects of affirmative action policy, but this book goes into far more detail, and is far more convincing about the conspiracy of deceit, false innuendo, and misinformation put out by legislators, the media, and the universities.

I disagree with Prof. Farron as to the innate nature of the inferior IQs of nonwhite populations, and will send a 79-page word processor text file of my own theoretical and empirical reasons for doing so. I blame the schools, especially the first three years, and will send my unpublished manuscript as a free email attachment to anyone requestion one from me by email.

Farron is right that the only real way to achieve racial balance in schools and the work force would be with an outright quota system, even though this is impossible politically and constitutionally.

However, affirmative action is a horrible blight on a country, like ours, that is trying to sell "truth, justice, and the American" way to a world that is decreasingly impressed by our technological and manufacturing prowess.

This book is a must for anyone, of any race or political persuasion, who truly believes our grandchildren should be judged by the content of their characters rather than by the color of their skin.

5 out of 5 stars An unapologetic, no-holds barred indictment of affirmative action especially in university admission.......2006-02-09

The Affirmative Action Hoax: Diversity, The Importance Of Character And Other Lies by academician Steven Farron is an unapologetic, no-holds barred indictment of affirmative action especially in university admission, and also the less widely publicized practices of affirmative grading and graduation. Vehement in its denouncements, The Affirmative Action Hoax is unafraid to label defenses of affirmative action as "shameless frauds" and "blatant lies"; it declares, in unambiguous terms, that affirmative action is a blatant form of discrimination against white people and Asian people, and that if racial discrimination must be enacted then by far the most efficient and fair means is through quotas. Debunking the non-academic admissions criteria of "diversity", "importance of character", etc. often used to defend anti-white affirmative action by revealing that the same concepts were first introduced to discriminate in favor of white students who could not compete with the children of Jewish immigrants, The Affirmative Action Hoax is sharp-tongued yet serious minded in its call to reexamine a facet of university admissions policies all too easily taken for granted.

                          Book Description

Wild Forests presents a coherent review of the scientific and policy issues surrounding biological diversity in the context of contemporary public forest management. The authors examine past and current practices of forest management and provide a comprehensive overview of known and suspected threats to diversity.

In addition to discussing general ecological principles, the authors evaluate specific approaches to forest management that have been proposed to ameliorate diversity losses. They present one such policy —the Dominant Use Zoning Model incorporating an integrated network of "Diversity Maintenance Areas"—and describe their attempts to persuade the U.S. Forest Service to adopt such a policy in Wisconsin.

Drawing on experience in the field, in negotiations, and in court, the authors analyze the ways in which federal agencies are coping with the mandates of conservation biology and suggest reforms that could better address these important issues. Throughout, they argue that wild or unengineered conditions are those that are most likely to foster a return to the species richness that we once enjoyed.
