Red River Rising: The Anatomy of a Flood and the Survival of an American City
ASIN: 0803246781 |
Book Description
What could be safer than Grand Forks, North Dakota, settled on the vast, flat plain of the Red River? There’d be no danger unless the whole town went under water. But in April 1997 that is precisely what happened. Flood Stage and Rising tells the story of that month-long disaster from the point of view of one who lived through it—fighting the flood shoulder-to-shoulder with her neighbors, watching in horror as the water breaks the dikes, fleeing the city only to see, via newscasts, her town burst into flames at the height of the flood—and finally working to put her own and Grand Fork’s life back together.
As she chronicles North Dakota’s disastrous winter and spring—and the tortuous recovery process that continues to this day—Jane Varley gives us a shocking, moving picture of the reality behind the headline news that riveted the nation. A gifted poet and essayist, Varley has crafted a first-rate adventure narrative that is also a love story about a particular place and time, infused with her passion for the natural world, a curiosity about rivers and remote landscapes, and a need for meaning. Her story culminates a life of travels that prepared her—and prepares us—for what we see in North Dakota as the lake bed of the Red River Valley refills with water like a ghost of its ancient past.

Dive Into This One!.......2005-06-27
I live on the floodplane of the Mississippi River. In flood years, the spring rise threatens my existence in deluging ways, the river flowing into the first floor of my house. I keep a dinghy tied to my back doorknob for quick escape. Jane Varley's book provides haunting and fascinating images of what happens when a river relcaims its rightful place. Always in the counter-balance, of course, is how it wreacks havoc on human life. What does the river give? What does it take? Varley's book tackles both these questions in insightful and poetic ways.
Buy this book. You'll find her story of living in the midst of disaster life-giving and awe-inspired.
A Beautifully Written Story.......2005-04-27
This book is an amazing story of the beauty and strength of nature. Though written as a narrative, the language is beautifully poetic. The author is a fantastic story teller, and shares a personal account of an incredible event.
Why Do We Live Here?.......2005-03-18
This is a question that Jane Varley probes in Flood Stage and Rising. It is thrilling and fascinating that she is writing about midwesterners, and more specifically, Grand Forksians, inhabitants of this Red River Valley---but Varley's explorations in this work move well beyond our area, begging everyone to look closely at their surroundings and experience a sense of place more fully.
Every other chapter in Flood Stage and Rising is about Varley's experiences during the 1997 Grand Forks flood. The other chapters reveal her connections to water, particularly rivers, over the course of her life. She was born during an April flood in Dubuque and in the chapter describing it says, "I was born from water into water."
As a newcomer to North Dakota, Varley maintains a compelling distance from her topic, offering us a view of ourselves that is rich in familiar phrases ("Forty below keeps the riff raff out"), accents ("Ya got cherself in a spot there, didn't cha?") and ways of life ("In Minnesota, kindness can be an urgent business"). Yet Varley reminds us of her transient status: "Was the flood helping me know this place better or preventing me from knowing it, spurring on the feeling that I should leave and find new territory?"
It's a question we ask ourselves: Why do we live here? Varley will not answer this question for you, or even really for herself. You will not want her to; you will read the book and ask questions of yourself, your home, your memories, your observations, and your thoughts. As I stated earlier, people from all parts of the country will relate to and enjoy this book, and we owe an extra thanks to Varley for reminding us where we've been, making us put aside the jokes about living in North Dakota long enough to truly appreciate our own stories. "The stories reveal who we are, full of words, ready to say what happened to us, as well as silent, turning back to the cold muck of a basement, reaching in and ordering a new kind of life."

Book Description
* Written by the worldâs leading authorities on bioethics
* Provides a fresh examination of the highly controversial ethical and legal implications of genomics * Includes a wide range of case study material from cloning and genetically modified (GM) crops to gene therapy and transgenic animals
From the mid 1990s to the present day, agricultural biotechnology--GM crops and foods--has been the focus of debate and conflict in many European countries. Contrasting views of risks and benefits, trust in science and regulation, the understanding of science, media coverage, and mobilization of the public by civil society groups â all have been cited as drivers of public opinion. Designed in part to allay public concerns about GM agriculture, a European moratorium led to a new regulatory framework. The long running controversy is a signal that the publicâs view cannot be ignored in the development and implementation of new technologies arising out of genomics. Yet, agricultural biotechnologies are but one development in this area. Genetic testing and the uses of genetic information, the cloning human cells and tissues, and transgenic animals are potentially no less challenging for the public and regulators alike.
This volume, by an international group of social scientists from North America, Europe, and Japan, presents a series of comparative perspectives on the social, ethical, and legal implications of genomics. The aim is to capture lessons from the controversies of the 1990s and to raise the level of debate on the societal implications of new developments in genomics.

Helpful guide.......2000-06-12
Bromka does a good job of organizing a very large group of rides. His descriptions, however, were often limited and repetitive. Overall, though, I found the book to be very helpful.

Everyone in the Valley has brown eyes--except 13-year-old Jonathon. Ugly rumors about Jonathon's beautiful red-haired mother are surfacing among the self-righteous Valley folk, as are whispers about her son. He's beginning to worry that he's a "loony-blue," one of the blue-eyed, red-headed Dalriada--the much-feared mountain people who have magnificent horses, mystical powers, and horns growing out of their foreheads. After his mother's sudden death, the whispers grow to angry threats, and Jonathon escapes the Valley and goes in search of his heritage, his manhood, and his true love. In the mountains he experiences a mystical rite of passage that takes him to the Dalriada encampments, through caves echoing with his own spirit voices, to the very top of the world. From the mountain peak he carries back one of the legendary Firegold apples--a gift that brings reconciliation with his father and his rightful home among the Valley people.
Fantasy lovers will enjoy the vivid images and original ideas of this shimmering tale, with layers of philosophy about bigotry, narrow-mindedness, and true identity adding emotional depth. This complex, imaginative first novel bodes well for future titles by Dia Calhoun. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Thirteen-year-old Jonathon, feared and hated by the brown-eyed Valley people because of his blue eyes, tries to find answers to his true identity in the Red Mountains, home of the Dalriada, a mountain people with magnificent horses, mystical powers, and blue eyes like his.

Fantastic Coming-of-Age Tale.......2006-12-06
I read this when I was in the 8th grade and I found that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I truly admire books that branch out passed the last pages. For anyone looking for a wonderful coming-of-age story, I recommend Firegold a thousand times over!
Amazing.......2005-12-24
I loved this book. I first read it in 4th grade, when I was searching through my dad's bookshelves. I have read it about forty times and it just keeps getting better. I didn't like how the end left off, so I even wrote another chapter to the book. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Excellent, unique book.......2005-11-11
I really got drawn into the world and the cultures and people felt real and interesting.
It's not a fast-paced book, but it's paced just right for the story it has to tell.
The main characters are awesome and believable, and their journeys are satisfying in the end.
Wonderful!.......2004-07-15
I absoloutley loved this book! It is about a boy named Jonothan who lives in The Valley. When strange things start to happen, the people blame him because of his blue eyes and his Mothers red hair. They think he is part Dalriada. He goes to teh Red Mountains, (Where the Dalriadas live,) to find answers. He ends up on a journey for his life. I was annoyed at the end, but it was still a wonderful book.I hope you like it.
Trying too hard.......2004-03-06
The book jumps from 1 thing to the next. I never wanted to turn the page, but I am the kind of person who starts a book and has to finish it. The boy has a journey, which could be exciting to some people--but wasn't to me or any of my friends. Almost all of my class was in agreement, the book was HORRIBLE! The 285 pages of it (paperback) were almost all about brown and blue eyes. The repetitiveness totally ruined the story. Maybe if everything hadn't been said 50 times the book would have been better...but everything was said 50 times! I say if you read the book and find it to be good...you must be reading a different book!

Book Description
This book is the companion text to Simulating Fuzzy Systems which investigated discrete fuzzy systems through crisp discrete simulation. The current book studies continuous fuzzy dynamical systems using crisp continuous simulation. We start with a crisp continuous dynamical system whose evolution depends on a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The system of ODEs contains parameters many of which have uncertain values. Usually point estimators for these uncertain parameters are used, but the resulting system will not display any uncertainty associated with these estimators. Instead we employ fuzzy number estimators, constructed from expert opinion or from data, for the uncertain parameters. Fuzzy number estimators produces a system of fuzzy ODEs to solve whose solution will be fuzzy trajectories for the variables. We use crisp continuous simulation to estimate the trajectories of the support and core of these fuzzy numbers in a variety of twenty applications of fuzzy dynamical systems. The applications range from Bungee jumping to the AIDS epidemic to dynamical models in economics.

Book Description
Simulating Fuzzy Systems demonstrates how many systems naturally become fuzzy systems and shows how regular (crisp) simulation can be used to estimate the alpha-cuts of the fuzzy numbers used to analyze the behavior of the fuzzy system. This monograph presents a concise introduction to fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, fuzzy estimation, fuzzy probabilities, fuzzy systems theory, and fuzzy computation. Description:
This study addresses a fuzzy-neural hybrid system of simulating typhoon waves. A membership function based on the fuzzy theory is expressed by a union Gaussian function to illustrate the rapid wave decaying. Four areas separated by two lines which intersect at the Hua-Lien harbor indicate the case of typhoon's position and propagation. Better simulation performance of the peak wave heights and their occurrence time in both the learning stage and the verification stage simulated by the NF2 model than by the NF1 model is identified. The wave decaying due to land effect is well described by the NF2 model. The NF2 model is applicable for well simulating typhoon waves during the whole period of a typhoon approaching to Taiwan.

How it was Done in Russia.......2005-01-19
I bought this book for a course in Russian short fiction, and two years later I still find myself coming back to it. There are many great examples of Soviet and pre-Soviet writing in this anthology, the complete text of Olesha's novella "Envy", as well as some excerpts from longer works like "The Master and Margarita" and "Dr. Zhivago".
True to the Russian literary tradition, most of the pieces occupy a bizarre liminal space between incredibly funny and incredibly disturbing. The author I'm most grateful for having been introduced to through this volume is Danill Kharms, an absurdist writer from the early Soviet era. His "Anecdotes about Pushkin's Life" mocks the kind of hero worship prevelant in the literary world by presenting a series of ridiculous one-paragraph stories that make little to no sense, but are quite funny.
Other highlights in this book include Zamayatin's (authour of "We") "The Cave", Babel's "My First Goose", Platonov's "The Potudan River", Zoshchenko's bureaucratic allegory "Bees and People", Gorky's "Recollections of Leo Tolstoy", and Shalamov's Gulag horror story "Lend Lease".
This book is well worth getting, and you'll find yourself returning to it over and over again, each time finding something new.
