5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Job by Christianson.......2007-08-25

There are only two other reviews of this biography, and both lament similarly perceived shortcomings. One needs to read a fair amount of Eiseley to really appreciate Christianson's work. And the more Eiseley you read, the more you begin to realize that however enchanting and entertaining the story, the storyteller-very skillfully-remains veiled and in the background. Loren Eiseley reveals himself on his own terms, and once you have had a glimpse of his childhood world, it is easier to understand why. "The Lost Notebooks of Loren Eiseley" is required reading for anyone who wishes to look inside of-to the degree that it is possible-Loren Eiseley. Loren embodies elements of character seen in Hilton's Robert Conway, J.L. Carr's "A Month in the Country," and perhaps even Antonio Porchia's "Voices." This biography gives the reader about as much as one is likely to get... I am grateful to Christianson for all the nuances that he has added to the evanescent beauty and delicacy that was Loren Eiseley.

3 out of 5 stars A Biography at the Wood's Edge.......2002-03-21

Christianson gave the work a hearty try. His facts, often presented in calendar fashion, are given in such a way that one can glimpse the character of Eiselely as he would appear to one who was observing him. In this fashion, the book is a success. But I strongly wonder that the book misses its mark in finding what was inside the man, rather than merely describing what the man did. Christianson seems to have made a real effort, but the many people he interviewed or researched that were acquainted with Loren and Mabel, seem also to have been observers of WHAT THEY DID rather than who they were. In this sense, I dont think that anyone will do a better job at an Eiseley biography, as both Mr and Mrs E seem to have made it plain that they werent to be really known.

1 out of 5 stars All the Strange Dours.......2001-07-30

As to the quality of the scholarship, there can be little question. With few exceptions, it appears that all of the "i's" are dotted, all the "t's" crossed.

Christianson rightly avoids emotional involvement with his "subject," except for occasional pronouncements and conclusions about Eiseley's character, mostly negative. The author avoids hero-worship with a vengeance. This makes the book interesting in another dimension, because it starts one to thinking about Christianson himself. The downside is that this inevitable digression of thought gets in the way of thinking about the subject of the work. But at least it's not a starry-eyed whitewash.

One can't help wondering why the author, who does let some positive elements shine through via quotes by Eiseley himself, seems resentful of his subject rather than understanding. Perhaps he admired his subject so much that he went overboard and emphasized the "warts" too much. Perhaps he began as one seduced by his subject's work, but had his bubble burst when his research exposed the "warts." Perhaps he was jealous. Perhaps he took pleasure in attempting to topple one more successful than he, a practice known as "trophy hunting" in some circles. One way of "standing tall" is to put down, but it is a curious way.

Read this book for information but not for a sympathetic treatment of Eiseley. Just as an overly sentimental treatment would be flawed, this book lacks balance, lacks any depth of understanding of the complex relationships of insight and science and literature and how these were combined in Eiseley. It is linear in its "analysis," and many a reader will want that.

It is a fair guide to the facts, but not skillfully written in the sense of being "reader-friendly." While real contortions of prose are relatively rare, the writing is not easy to follow. Certainly the author knew his subject well (at least one guesses that this must be the case), but the reader does not close this scholarly tome with a coherent picture of the subject. One is left with more of a sense that one has been present while Eiseley's closets were not only emptied of their skeletons, but watched while they were scattered about. One imagines Eiseley's own skeleton among them, disarticulated, incomplete, broken, even pulverized. But dead men cannot protest, eh?

        Book Description

The maxim 'anything goes' from the 20s and 30s days of Cabaret still rings true today. Driven by an unconventional and uncompromising spirit and the emergence of East Berlin's thriving fashion, bar and club scene, Berlin is fast becoming the party capital of Europe.

But Berlin is essentially a hidden city a marvel to unravel, but frustratingly difficult without the right guidance. Go beyond the obvious to discover its thriving (but largely overlooked) cafe culture, concept led restaurants, stylish bars and wild clubs.

Very snazzy good-looking guide book, exceedingly reliable on how to hit the right spots. Essential packing for hip travellers!

2 out of 5 stars Eh. All hype and no punch........2006-02-02

I was expecting a wild hedonist's guidebook to the varied wicked delights of this wonderful city. Instead, I got a punchlist of pricey places that were by and large already covered in the Time Out and Lonley Planet guides to Berlin. Save your money and get those instead, and hit various online guides to Berlin to find the really fun spots instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Berlin.......2006-02-01

You can judge this book by it's cover - elegant, slick and an air of exclusivity about it. That is exactly what you should expect from this brilliant guide. It makes for pithy reading, allowing a very directed approach to pursuing the pleasures of your choice during a short visit. Having experience this guide first hand I doubt I will now visit a city which does not have one.

In a novel that could be described as a kinder, gentler version of M.T. Anderson's Feed, young author Ned Vizzini draws on the very recent recollections of his years at Stuyvesant High School to create a witty commentary on the annoying realities of teen social life.

Jeremy Heere is convinced that people are born Cool: "See, because being Cool is obviously the most important thing on earth…It's more important than getting a job, or having a girlfriend, or political power, or money, because all those things are predicated by Coolness." And he hasn't got it. Every day he yearns hopelessly for beautiful Christine. Then, one day he gets a squip--a tiny quantum supercomputer that looks like a little gray capsule and when swallowed becomes a voice in his head instructing him in the ways of Cool. Soon, every gril he admires is his--including Christine. But when the squip turns malevolent in its merciless pursuit of the goal, Jeremy begins to realize that Cool is not as cool as he thought it was. (ages 14 up) --Patty Campbell

3 out of 5 stars Getting Your Fill of Chill.......2007-07-08

Whether or not you'll enjoy Ned Vizzini's BE MORE CHILL depends on who you are -- boys will probably like it more than girls, and teens will probably like it more than adults. It is most definitely a YA book, but teachers looking to stock classroom libraries with "fast reads" should be forewarned that our protagonist, Jeremy Heere, is out to lose his virginity and willing to swallow a quantum computer pill called a "squip" (which will advise him in a Keanu Reeves voice) to become cool (er, "chill") enough to do it. Thus, we have a book with sexual themes and a liberal dose of profanity.

So, if you are a parent of a reluctant-reading teen (esp. boy, esp. over age 15) and he goes to see R-rated movies anyway, buy it for him. Or if you're a kid who just wants a fun read on stuff that's very intriguing ("titillating" would be a more accurate word), have at it!

From my vantage point, it was a tad formulaic, like one of those teen movies where the nerdy lead needs help (enter the "squip" computer pill, chased by Mountain Dew) to get the girl, so he goes for it at all costs ($500, by way of stolen Beanie Baby collectibles, to be exact). We have the usual teen party at a house where the parents are away with drugs, alcohol, and sex the "chill" element throughout.

Saving the book somewhat are two things: the romantic interest (Christine Caniglia), who is truly less beholden to the cliche interests of teens (see paragraph above) and the squip voice in Jeremy's head, which, in its computer kind of way, is kind of endearingly funny and (as computer's always are) regrettably fallible.

Overall, it's one of those books that will be a 5-star romp for some readers (heck, even me if I were again 16 and frustrated with all the popular guys landing the girls while I failed again and again) and a 2-star from many others (I'd say the least intrigued would be adult female readers, who will do a lot of eye-rolling over Vizzini's characterization of almost every female except Christine in the book). Thus, my review lands squarely in the middle. Reader, know thyself! Then "buy" or "pass on."

5 out of 5 stars Be More Chill Review.......2007-03-30

The book Be More Chill was absolutely hilarious. The author was incredibly good at getting into the brain of a teenage boy. A reader will feel like the main character is someone they have known for years after reading a few pages. He is so easy to relate to and his thought processes and actions will most likely remind you of someone you know. The way he reacts to situations in his life is so real and human-like that the author will probably have you saying "That's what I would do!" There are so many little jokes throughout the book. Ned Vizzini's sense of humor is so clever and honest. He never once goes out of his way to seem funny. All of the awkward, embarrassing situations that the main character goes through are everyday situations that most people go through. Although, besides being humorous the book had a deep underlying meaning. It shows readers that it is always better to be yourself, and if you act like someone else, living a life trying to impress people, you will probably end up unhappy. The author gave this book the perfect combination of quick-moving plot and very funny details so the reader learns the intricacies of the characters' personalities, without the book being slow or boring. You won't be able to put it down. I really loved this book and highly recommend it. There wasn't anything I disliked about it.

          3 out of 5 stars eastlake.......2007-02-09

Well I thought this book was ok. The book talks about a boy in high school, Jeremy, who is a major dork. He takes advice from the squip, a tiny computer that he swallows. He trys to get wit a girl named christine, who he has been liking for a long time. He becomes part of a clique that he wouldn`t have been in if he didn`t git the squip. The squip tells him what to do and what to say. Its like a conscience, like in the back of his head. I thought that it was intresting to read what the squip was telling him to do, and he would actually do it. Everything the squip told him was mostly true, or better thing to do. I think the squip gave him more confidence. He became popular through out the story. He did things he would never do. He also did new things. With out the squip he would have been a loser forever. I think most people would take the squip if they had the choice to. Most people are not sure about certain things and it would be better to have somebody make the decisions for you or give you advice. I gave this book three stars because it got my attention and I liked the subject, But the charcters were not that great and I thought the ending was wack. There where also parts of the book that were funny.

          1 out of 5 stars Justifies Columbine.......2006-09-07

One of these days the YA publishers will stop using actual YA writers for their tomes. Sure, the young adults are the same age as the readers, but that means nothing when character development and insight are sacrificed.

This book is about a nerd creepy loser whose given a nanocomputer to train him to be cool. So he becomes a jackass creepy loser. Most of the supporting characters are types and the non-teenage characters are either boring or ridiculous. There's even some homophobia thrown in as the English teacher swishes every which way saying MAAAAAAAAAA (I'm not sure what that means either).

While the book centers on the narrator's attempt to go out with a girl in his drama club, you never get why he likes her. In fact, she never seems to be a coherent human being. Almost every time she's in the narrative she's doing something off-kilter that makes no sense to anyone. The only reason why you sympathize with her is because she's got to deal with this jerk, and even then you really wish she'd just put a restraining order on him.

While there are moments of insight, where the author and the narrator come up against the fact that they aren't the only people in the world with problems, they are few and far between.

Overall, this is a horrible book with horrible characters and lousy plotting. The only good thing that you can say for the book is that it's not half as irritating as the audio CD.

          4 out of 5 stars Love & Popularity.......2006-04-09

Ned Vizzini has a way of making his characters feel more ridiculous than life, and I was entertained. BE MORE CHILL tells the story of a nerdy guy who wants to get laid but doesn't know how. A sad character that he somehow gets us to cheer for, most of the time. Jeremy Heere's introduction to the latest in overseas brain-altering technology, called the "squip," is supposed to change that, make him more likeable and teach him how to get the girl that he wants.

From here, the book takes off into what many have called a satire on social mores, which it is, at a topsoil level. Jeremy Heere (Great name by the way, made me laugh) wants to be cool but thinks you have to be born that way. The squip changes his mind on that. The squip's advice is humorous at times, laughable at others, and bordering on "spot on right," leaving the reader with the question "Can a computer really do all that?" But what if it could.

Infatuation and love might screw up the whole system. Who wants the computerized voice of Keanu Reaves (Really. It's his voice in the novel) in your head telling you what girl is best for you socially? Jeremy's sure doesn't. He wants to choose who he likes and who is too high up the social ladder for him. It's the squip who leads him to believe that he'd want more unattainable girls if he knew how to get them, and it's his journey into squip-advised popularity takes him to those places where he'll have to figure out what is best for himself. Especially when the squip doesn't know what to do.
