The title tells it all. This is a fun book to read and it got my wife and me all excited about our trip way before we even packed our bags. All the suggestions were very good.

This book is what travel guides are supposed to be: informative, interesting, and most of all--fun. Great research and the author's warm writing style make planning a leisurely holiday a pleasant experience. Great suggestions for romantic getaways, but there's plenty here for the whole family, if you really want to bring the kids.

Living in Chicago, I'm always longing for summer. Now I'm also longing to go to the Cape area. Enchanted Summer paints a great picture of what should be a great summer vacation. The book is well written, well organized and well..enchanting. Can't wait to check out the recommendations.

Just like anime, but manga came first!.......2003-05-13

I can't recommend Kare Kano enough! And this third book in the series is awesome! This book introduces Maho, a girl in Yukino's class who doesn't like her and knows she's the vanity queen! What's going to happen?!!(I know, but you have to read to find out, I wouldn't want to spoil it!) The anime is just like the manga, but you should watch that (It's fantastic!) and read the manga b/c the manga came first and it has extra stories!! Have fun!!

A Troubled Genius.......2000-05-08

Strindberg was one of the foremost playwrights of the 19th century, almost equal in stature to the other great Scandinavian, Ibsen. This work is a departure in that the author takes as his subject his own psyche. The schizophrenia and paranoia he suffers from comes at the reader in waves. We are drawn into the vortex of his twisted reasoning, his fears, his misanthropic vision. About the nearest parallel I can think of is the work of Antonin Artaud, who also is quite adept at describing his own psychoses. What seperates them, in my opinion, is that Strindberg is a much greater writer and can at times objectively look at his subject (himself), whereas Arataud tends towards the monomaniacal. I would recommend this work for anyone interested in modern playwrights or in the psychological underpinnings of the artistic temperament.

strindberg goes insane.......2000-03-26

In Inferno Strindberg writes about the mental problems that he suffered from during the 1890s in a such a convincing way that you almost begin to wonder whether he really was mad. At times you really believe that everyone was out to get him and maybe they were(he made himself very impopular in his native Sweden with some of his books). I guess this book gives you a good description of just how fine the line between genious and insanity is. If you like Térèse Raquin by Zola this one is for you!

Closing Time: The rise and fall of Semisonic.......2007-10-04

If you are over 12 years old, you probably remember the song, "Closing Time" by the band, Semisonic. The song was played everywhere during the spring and summer of 1998 and reached the top of the popular music charts. This entertaining book tells the story of just how this song, and the band who recorded it, reached that pinnacle of success, as seen from the perspective of the man behind the drum kit, Jacob Slichter. He also goes on to describe how the Music Industry, including a host of executives and radio programmers, contributed to their demise as a recording group. There are likely very few books that give an insider's view of the machinery involved in producing "the next big hit" as well as this one does, and the barriers that prevent a lot of good music from ever reaching your ears (at least in the days before the internet).

Mr. Slichter reveals all his insecurities as his band suddenly takes off, his euphoria when Semisonic was at its peak, and his disappointment in his label's failure to capitalize on the success of "Closing Time" and the CD on which it appeared, "Feeling Strangely Fine." For those of you who may have relegated Semisonic to the "One-hit Wonders" category, their other CDs, "Great Divide" and "All About Chemistry" are worth a listen to dispel that impression. The latter features a duet with Carole King, "One True Love," that could easily have been a radio hit (the book describes how this song came to be, including Mr. Slichter's own star-struck reactions to the making of the recording).

This book is well-written, and well worth your time if you have ever asked yourself, "Whatever happened to Semisonic?" Mr. Slichter gives a heartfelt account of his years with Semisonic, but also reveals his wit and sense of humor in this story. He provides a cautionary tale for those who aspire to rock and roll stardom, and a guide to the pitfalls along that path...and why he would gladly do it all over again.

Smooth transition from drummer to writer.......2007-06-22

What a pleasant surprise of a read. Slichter really does have a terrific writing style and a genuine gift for weaving humor into his storytelling. The story of Semisonic is hardly the most tragic in rock n' roll history, but this book places many larger aspects of life in the big-money music world into perspective. Wanna-be rock stars beware.

Best book about Being in a band.......2006-06-17

This book is by far the best book i've read about being in a band.Jacob Slichter tells of his heart warming,honest,humourous and exciting times as a rock and roll drummer. You won't find the same old stupid rock stories of wild groupie orgys or moronic substance abuse just human stories that anyone can relate too. i recommend this to anyone who has an interest in music.

an entertaining and informative read.......2006-03-07

I work in the music industry, and I recommend this book to everyone I know, ESPECIALLY new artists. Slichter peels back the veneer of the rock-n-roll lifestyle from the inside-out in a lively and highly informed fashion, pausing only occasionally for a modicum of self-pity. It's great fun to read, and a deep shock to some who don't necessarily know the inside working of the music industry. A valuable addition to any musician's bookshelf.

As a musician wanting to make music a career I found this book
to be a great benefit to read. It offered a fantastic insider's view of the work of a working rock band from its very beginning steps to the upper rungs of the ladder. A must read for any musician thinking of prusuing music as a serious career.

A submarine commander's view........2007-01-20

This book by I.J. Galantin was a great book to read! I am an avid reader of WW II books - especially Navy and submarine history. This is an excellent account of what it was like to skipper a submarine in the Pacific in WW II. He begins with a brief account of his training, then launches right into details of his experiences aboard the submarine USS Halibut. Especially riveting are the accounts of being depth charged during several battles.

Galantin's book also provides an insight into things that were going wrong with various weapons and systems in submarines. These details give the reader some insight into why the U.S. submarine service did not fare well in the aspect of casualties! His writing on these elements are not overly detailed, so the reader can easily understand them. He says he wrote this book for all the sailors who served on the Halibut and did not know anything about what went on in other areas of the ship during battle. What he also does is give readers who weren't there a great narrative of WW II submarine warfare!

I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in submarines, World War II, or naval history. Once I started reading it I couldn't stop!

A great story , realistic and TRUE........2007-01-05

While I didn't serve on Submarines in WWII I did work on them at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the mid 50s as a young Ltjg. I experienced test dives in a WWII Fleet boat and later models up through the ALBACORE (AGSS569), the experimental first modern high speed submarine. I got to work and talk to Chiefs and Officers who had experienced combat in WWII including depth charging.

This book brings all those experiences to life in an easy to read well written book. Even if you have no experience with Submarines this book will give you an accurate view into life aboard a WWII submarine in action. Better than any fictional novel on the subject - this is real, an easy and fast moving read that you will enjoy.

Not only does this book capture the fascinating technical and tactical details of submarine operations, it allows the reader to examine the soul, spirit and psyche of a wartime submarine skipper and his crew. It is a profoundly personal and reflective book. I have not been touched by the vicarious sense of realism since I read Elmer Bendiner's equally riveting Fall of Fortresses (WWII B-17 ops).

Galantin deals with seemingly irreconcilable contrasts, from biblical inspiration to the instinctive needs of young men; from the sweet innocence of his young daughters, to the profanity aboard the boat; from the natural beauty of the sea to the horrors of war.

When I wrote to the author several years ago, expressing my appreciation for his favors in war and his deeds in peace (Galantin was the #2 officer in the Polaris Program), he wrote me back a gracious and appreciative letter.

Terrific Inside Look At A WWII Submarine.......2004-11-11

I've read TAKE HER DEEP! three times. I knew after I read it the first time I wanted it in my personal Library. Galatin is not your typical dry military author; his book is well written and easy for a non-nyphyte Navy person to understand. This book should have been turned into a movie, without embellishments. HALIBUT's adventures under Galatin's command were all one could ask for in a movie, and make for a great book to read. Hard to put down once you start reading it. Worth adding to one's personal Library. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of it's length.

If you like WWII non-fiction, this is about as good as it gets. Well written, historically accurate, and full of little known facts about submarine life.

Follow the Trail.......2003-04-05

This is something that will not be shown on prime time television. It will not win the support of the corporate controllers who buy time and form conglomerates so that courageous stories like this will not be told, but in today's topsy turvy world, where control is amassed by every smaller numbers of greedy multinationals, this is a story that needs to be revealed in every shocking detail.

The author takes this account of appalling corporate greed to the level where it must go if the true story is to be revealed, to the linkage between large corporations and the huge international drug network. This is in turn linked to the oil network, and it in turn is attached to the warmaking machine with the chilling potential to amass fortunes by sending youngsters choked off from good jobs by greedy corporate globalism to do their fighting. Chicken hawks like Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz and Perle cheer from the sidelines as these youngsters are sacrificed on an altar of corporate greed.

The CIA is not spared by this courageous author. In many instances it has been used to soften up economies before replacing leaders who demand a fair share of the pie for the people of their respective nations. In other times the influence is more direct, as in overthrowing democratically elected governments in Guatemala, Iran and Chile. Meanwhile the propaganda machine spiels off the message that people hate America because it is such a rich nation with prosperous and happy people. Try telling that to those who have been reduced to fragmentary existences through the oppressive yoke of globalization. Look into what happened in Russia after the old Communist bosses were overthrown.

The Enron picture is tied ever so closely to the Bush regime. While Cheney warned us that California was being torn asunder due to a lack of sufficient energy resources, the truth finally came out in a stinging government report revealing what informed sources already knew, that a savage ripoff led by the Enron brigade had fleeced California's taxpayers. Why not let these evil wrongdoers do the hard time in federal prisons rather than non-violent drug offenders who need treatment rather than prison incarceration?

These are just some of the questions arising from a detailed reading of this brilliant book. We need more courageous authors like this who are not afraid to take on the establishment. This kind of courage is what is needed to turn things around amid suffocating greed at the corporate international level. Perhaps enough courageous voices can ultimately end the tragic concept, which former President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned emphatically against, of preventive war.
