Eating & Drinking in Paris: French Menu Translator and Restaurant Guide, 3rd Edition (Open Road Travel Guides)
ASIN: 1581825129 |
Book Description
It has been said that even those who hate shopping love to shop in Paris. Indeed, of all the ways to explore the City of Lightstouring, studying, or meandering through its colorful streetsshopping is by far the most pleasant and civilized way to get to know the city.
This new edition of The Paris Shopping Companion is a major revision and expansion of the third edition. As such, it is the perfect book for the traveler who wants to make the most of what Paris has to offer. While certainly a travel guide, it provides something no other book offers: personal guidance from two authors who know the city and its shops intimately. Each establishment is viewed from a French point of view, and practical advice is given on the best buys at each shop. With maps of the major shopping areas and photographs that richly illustrate the text, the book is organized to encourage shopping forays, neighborhood by neighborhood, throughout the city.
The Paris Shopping Companion describes the merchandise of a wide array of Paris businesses that offer unique goods and services, from clothing to linens, jewelry and accessories to books (including English-language stores), stationery, food, collectibles, leather goods, kitchen aids, and more. Packed with practical information, it will be useful for anyone who travels to Paris, regardless of one's budget.

Shopping Guide.......2007-09-11
Lots of the shops and retaurants were closed in August which was not noted in the book and two in particular were no longer at the address shown. While all the shops were located by an area it would have been nicer if the shops were along a fixed route.
Not just shopping!.......2007-02-04
I lived in Paris for two years (2004-2006) but didn't begin to shop until I found this book (recommended by Amazon). Often in Paris, the store windows don't really show much about what's inside, but this book tells everything you want to know before getting on the Metro. Every description was accurate. The shops were where they were supposed to be, the merchandise was as described in the book, and prices were close on the mark.
Every Saturday I mapped out where I would go based on "the book". I found that if I read the shop descriptions, I could tell in advance if I would want to find them, so I would check off my "must sees". Along the way I made notes in the margins about the shops, and also what else was in the neighborhood. I didn't find the restaurant reviews particularly helpful, and wish they were left out to make room for more shops.
An unexpected bonus: looking for "the book" stores often lead me into streets and neighborhoods far from my usual treks, and MORE shops! The sightseeing hints were excellent also. I never went out without this book, and my co-workers borrowed it until it became available at WH Smith. I met Susan Winkler at a book signing there, and she was amazed at my margin notes (and probably at the tattered condition of the book).
Two of the specialty shops Susan praised were down the street (Rue Royale) from where I worked and I went into them at lunchtime at least once a week. My only regret is that my last month in Paris was the dead month, August, when almost every thing is closed, but I burned up the pavements for the six months preceeding. (I bought the book as soon as it came out in February).
Happy shopping!
A guide for all ages, price ranges, and wants!.......2006-08-27
I was lucky enough to have Winkler's guide with me this past year on a shopping trip to Paris with my mother and grandmother. Truly, Winkler's presence made the trip. Without her insight and advice we would have been absolutely lost. Winkler's book is real insider's guide to Paris that held excellent advice and suggestions for the three generations of women in my family. Based off of my experience, I am confident that anyone looking for anything could be helped by The Paris Shopping Companion. Winkler must be a women with real style!
Paris at its best!.......2006-07-21
This is more than a shopping book....it is the easy way to get the best that Paris offers. The restaurant suggestions have proved to be extrodinary and the selection of hotels allows you to stay anywhere in the city that suits your whims. There is so much in Paris and this book allows you to organize, focus and have more time to enjoy what interests you...to find those special things you want to bring home. A necessity for your next trip!

Make the most of Paris.......2006-08-10
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (7/06)
Shopping in Paris...isn't that every woman's dream? It sure was mine and I was pleased to review Winkler's book. When we think of shopping in Paris, we often think of Christian Dior, Apostrophe, Chanel, Cartier, and other well known designers.
However, Winkler gives us another perspective on shopping in Paris. Not only does she depict the designer outlets, she also leads us to checking out the lesser priced merchandise, yet much of the same quality and style.
Of interest to me was Place Vendome where Hotel Ritz is located. Not only did I experience lunch at the hotel, but also had an opportunity to spot Yoko Ono and Johnny Depp having lunch near our table. After lunch we strolled the cobblestone parking lot and shopped in the infamous jewelry houses: Chaumet, Cartier, and Boucheron - some of my favorite designers.
"The Paris Shopping Companion" is not only a shopping guide. Winkler provides a visitor's guide which includes the best time to go to Paris, what to take, how to get around, customs, and shipping your purchases back to the U.S. She suggests accommodations which are quaint and located to many of the main attractions. She also gives information on attractions in sections called "along the way" e.g. explanation of Musee D'Orsay, address, metro, telephone and hours of operation.
This book is a must for anyone traveling to Paris. It is concise and complete, user friendly and certainly takes the fear of visiting a city where the spoken language is French. Although, I must say, not being able to speak French all I needed to know is: Parlez-vous l'anglais? and there was some around that did speak English. Take "The Paris Shopping Companion" on your next trip to Paris!
If you can read a little French, I have a better suggestion. . ........2005-10-24
If you are looking for actual Paris BARGAINS, you will find Paris Moins Cher far more helpful than this book. even if you speak very little French, you can decipher enough to lead you to the real, hidden deals. And I should know -- as the best-selling author of 14 books of a similar nature (albeit to North American cities like Vancouver and Toronto) -- this Paris guide is really the "competition." I wish I had written a guidebook like Paris Moins Cher, but alas, I can only purchase it! As well, Paris Moins Cher is updated every single year, and believe me, that's important, if you are visiting only periodically, as things DO change quickly. I try to write updates on evalu8.org, but one person can only cover so much territory. Bon chance, et bon marche!
The most interesting, comfortable and easy to use travel book.......2002-10-11
I have enjoyed using this book, and shared it with no fewer then six friends this summer who also traveled to Paris. At a recent book club meeting, we all agreed that Ms Winkler's book provides the most unique and pleasurable guide to walking, or shopping in Paris.
I wish she (Susan Winkler) would right a guide to London!!
Limited and hard to use.......2002-09-12
This book is difficult to use and very limited in scope. It is organized by the right and left bank which is so broad as to be of little use. Occassionally, it will mention a street and rattle off the names of some stores on that street. Fewer adjectives and more hard information would have helped. A large amount of space is given to big name stores and famous designers that nobody needs a special guide to find. It mentions Limoges twice but gives no further information about where one can find Limoges. It didn't mention Gien, a famous French pottery which is now sold in Neiman Marcus. Other guides were much more useful than this book in helping locate clothing stores that would appeal to a teenage girl. The shopping information in the typical guide book was more useful and eaiser to access.
Luxe, Calme, et Volupte...especially Volupte!.......2002-05-19
Like the du Bellay poem, Winkler's book manages to take the chaos of delights to the senses that is Paris and make it intelligible, while preserving the serendipity and spontaneous spirit that characterises the City of Light. The Paris Shopping Companion provides an excellent entree into the city for the novice, and for the seasoned traveler -- or even parisienne -- it is like a generous old friend (one with a much better memory), always ready to offer advice and information. With an engaging style, The Paris Shopping Companion manages to achieve both being excellent bathtime reading and an invaluable reference, whether you are searching for pralines in the 16th or lithographs in the sixth. Of course, Winkler's knowledge of fashion is extensive, and her advice on shopping for clothes is spot-on; her assessments of a boutique's particular style are ringingly accurate. Lastly, Winkler includes interesting bits of information about landmarks, history, and the arts of one of the world's most fascinating cities. This book is more than a shopping guide -- it is truly a superb companion. Je suis accro!

Love all of them!.......2006-07-14
The first 4 books from the series are the best! Buy them!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent series for young teens.......2006-05-11
As i bookseller with specialty in kids and teens, I must really give this series the "thumbs up"!
They are great "light reading", but with substantial contents for their target group. A series with all the right messages - trust in yourself, value your good friendships, be your own person, don't succumb to group pressure etc. BUT they are not annoyingly politically correct, and they are written in a way that will appeal to most age 11-14 girls.
They deal with friendships, first loves, puberty, parents, siblings, school and issues like 'what am I good at' and 'what do I want to be professionally' etc.
The first 6 books are narrated by 4 different girls (who are all friends), which gives a good insight to how different girls in a group see, react towards and percieve the various situations and issues.
Reading "guidelines":
The first five books are good from age 11 and up, from book six the girls mature somewhat and, depending on the individual of course, readers should be a year or two older.
Love These!.......2006-04-15
Cathy Hopkins is wonderful. These books are really good. Designer Divas is my favorite. I love Lucy, Nesta, and Toby. I could read these all day! They're awesome! Almost as good as Jacquline Wilson. Read them NOW! I order you : )!
They rock!
Mates Dates.. Ect. Books r the best!.......2004-11-17
Cathy Hopkins books are the BEST but my personal favorites are the mates dates books. I would recomend them to all girls!!! Shes a very talented writer and i believe that every one should read them. They have a resonable amount of pages (the averge amount is around 200) Once you start reading them you wont want to put it down!

Book Description
The well-loved standard reference for bird-watchers and nature lovers in North Carolina and South Carolina, Birds of the Carolinas collects information on all avian species known to have occurred in the region since 1900. This thoroughly revised second edition describes more than 460 individual species, including 60 new species that have been recorded since the publication of the first edition in 1980. Updated entries for all species reflect the current status of bird life as well as major changes in taxonomy and nomenclature. Each species account indicates when and where the bird is most likely to be found in the Carolinas, its nesting habits, feeding habits, and descriptive information useful in identifying the species. Generously illustrated with nearly 400 color photographs, this comprehensive guide to regional birds and their behavior will quickly earn a prominent place on the bookshelf of every bird-watcher in the Carolinas.

Birds of the Carolinas.......2007-01-15
Overall, an excellent book - my only complaint is that the bird pics are a little on the small side.
birds of the carolinas, 2nd ed........2006-07-01
The pictures were too small and some of the birds did not have a picture to wiew.
Like An Old Friend.......2003-07-31
This is the first bird book I ever owned. I purchased it in the summer of 1999. Four years later, it's like an old friend. It starts out with a short introduction and a few pages on the problem of identification. Then it goes on to describe the various bird habitats in North and South Carolina. The largest section of the book, of course, is the species guide. I found it to be particularly helpful with woodpeckers and shore birds, of which there is a wonderful variety here on Hilton Head Island.
I'm still learning about birds, so I have not yet become proficient at differentiating between various warblers, for example, but this book has helped me identify a couple. Last summer, I searched the book front to back for a bird species I encountered in Pickney Island National Wildlife Preserve, and never found it. Turns out that the bird was a Golden Crowned Kinglet. The bird was listed in this book, but for some reason there was no photo. Strictly speaking _Birds of the Carolinas_ isn't the best field guide on the market, but I still use it and have thoroughly enjoyed owning it. I think you'll enjoy it, too, especially if you are a new hobbyist.
don't bother.......2003-02-12
I ordered this book hoping to have help identifying the birds at the feeders in my back yard. This books wasn't much help. Most of the photos are tiny--all you see is a bird shape sitting in a bunch of bushes or trees. The photo of the cardinal and blue jay are excellent--but who doesn't already know what these birds look like? Also there was too much information on habitat and migration patterns. I suppose that some people would think this was important. All I know is that there are dozens of gray birds feeding my backyard and I still don't know what most of them are called.
I'm going to buy another book, hopefully with larger pictures.
An Essential Reference.......2000-02-28
Birds of the Carolinas is an essential reference for the hobiest. It is particularly useful in identifying transients, and in differentiating between similar species based on habitat and time of year. The book contains excellent photographs of most (but not all) of the species referenced.

A Guide to Bird Finding in Kansas and Western Missouri
ASIN: 0700605975 |
Book Description
Renowned for its tall grasses, the Konza Prairie in east-central Kansas provides shelter for a variety of birds, from the mourning dove to the wild turkey.
Yet many birds come to the Prairie for other reasons--the Virginian rail prefers the seasonal marshy swales, the northern rough-winged swallow searches the clay banks of active streams for its nest sites, the common poorwill nests in the sparsely vegetated rocky outcrop, while the yellow-rumped warbler favors a broad range of woody habitats, from clumps of dogwood in the upland prairies to the denser interior of the gallery forest. Just passing over in search of wetter spots, the Great Blue Heron occasionally alights on a pond or a creek, while, living up to its name, the chimney swift resides only in the chimney of the stone house at the Konza Prairie headquarters.
Konza Prairie, an 8,600-acre ocean of tallgrass cut by occasional stands of forests along streams and creeks, is a stomping ground or permanent home to more than 200 species of birds. Owned by The Nature Conservancy and administered by the Division of Biology at Kansas State University, the Prairies is located in the middle of the Flint Hills, which are covered by the last major remnants of virgin tallgrass prairie that once stretched from the eastern Dakotas to Oklahoma and east through Iowa and Illinois to Indiana and Ohio.
Featuring a current synopsis of the seasonal occurrence, habitat preference, breeding status, and abundance for all 208 species that have been recorded on the site, The Birds of Konza provides a basis for comparisons to other habitats and geographic areas as well as the benchmark for continuing studies in the tallgrass prairie. It is the only long-term, comprehensive analysis of bird populations in both grassland and forested habitats in the region.

Book Description
Why are leaves green and blood red? The answer lies with one family of pigments, the porphyrins and their relatives. These pigments are also responsible for the fundamental energetic processes that make life as we know it possible. The properties of these colorful molecules are now being
investigated for use in a wide range of applications, from cancer therapy to microelectronics. The Colours of Life is intended to be an introduction to the porphyrins and their role in life.
Customer Reviews:
This is perhaps the only current text on porphyrins........1998-07-20
This is perhaps the only current textbook on porphyrins, most other books being severely outdated. I use this book to provide my graduate students a quick introduction to porphyrin chemistry. The book's main strength, in my opinion, is that it places comparable amounts of emphasis on chemical and biological aspects. Regarding the chemical aspects (at least), I would have preferred a somewhat more advanced level, that would have allowed a bit more detailed and rigorous discussions on, say, synthesis, metalloporphyrin electronic structure, etc. Thus, I feel that a special topic course on porphyrin chemistry could not be primarily based on this book, but this book certainly deserves being on the required reading list. The book is fun to read. There are no other recent books covering the same subject. It's certainly a worthwhile purchase for anyone with more than a passing interest in porphyrin chemistry.

Book Description
“Ron Regé is one of a handful of cartoonists in the history of the medium not only to reinvent comics to suit his own idiosyncratic impulses and inspirations as an artist, but also to imbue it with his own peculiar, ever-changing emotional energy. To me, he is unquestionably one of ‘the greats.’” —Chris Ware
The Awake Field is a collection of Regé’s reflections of small-town life during a recent two-year sabbatical in a coastal community in southern Rhode Island. Short stories collide and swirl together, leaving visions of mysterious creatures floating through lush landscapes, pantomimed fairy tales, hypnotic dances, Bible quotations, and peace comics—all in Regé’s idiosyncratic abstract poetic cartoon language.

Book Description
The central thesis of The Web's Awake is that the phenomenal growth and complexity of the web is beginning to outstrip our capability to control it directly. Many have worked on the concept of emergent properties within highly complex systems, concentrating heavily on the underlying mechanics concerned. Few, however, have studied the fundamentals involved from a sociotechnical perspective. In short, the virtual anatomy of the Web remains relatively uninvestigated. The Web's Awake attempts to seriously explore this gap, citing a number of provocative, yet objective, similarities from studies relating to both real world and digital systems. It presents a collage of interlinked facts, assertions, and coincidences, which boldly point to a Web with powerful potential for life.
