Rich in imagery, Prisoner in the Garden provides compelling insight into the prison life of one of the elder statesman of our time.

A Prisoner In The Garden.......2007-04-10
I had the impression that the book was new. The dust-cover was marked and four pages had not been cut at the top right hand conner. i needed the book for research and very quickly. If not I would have returned the book.
Great tribute to a great man!.......2006-03-04
This is a very fascinating read and a fitting tribute to Mr. Nelson Mandela, one of the giants of the 20th century. After reading this book, you will get a better sense of Mandela's humanity and humility; qualities that have made him the most respected statesman of our time. Highly recommended!
Prisoner in the Garden by the Nelson Mandela Foundation.......2006-02-12
The book documents Nelson Mandela's long and unjust incarceration. It depicts a media visit to Robben Island. There are pictures of prisoners tending the garden while incarcerated.
This volume has many memoirs, oral accounts, artifacts used by Nelson Mandela, structures named after him and the official record of the Presidential tenure. A copy of the prison release is contained in the book. It was signed by President FW De Klerk and countersigned by HJ Coetsee. The daily visits are diarized
in a lengthy prison log.
This work documents a wealth of historical facts for future
generations of South Africans and historians everywhere.
It is an important testimony to the years of involuntary
bondage within the context of the old apartheid system.
The current and future generations will have a deep appreciation
of the power of forgiveness and reconciliation bestowed freely
by Nelson Mandela after years of an unjust detention.
The book attests to the wisdom of documenting the travesties
of justice and then putting the past behind so that the
society at-large can move forward to rebuild .
VERY INTERESTING DEPICTION OF MANDELA'S NEGOTIATION.......2006-01-31
I have been for many years a very interested reader of non-violent leaders, mainly MLK and Gandhi. The Mandela that shines through in this book recalls the spirits of those other great leaders.
Mandela's negotiation skills shine through along with his humanity. We are confronted with many of his letters, some of which demonstrated frustration at censorship, some of which showed his tremendous skills negotiating with a government that held him prisoner. It is outstanding to see a man take power from a prison cell, and negotiate in a position of strenght with a government that holds total control over his life.
The main aim of the book is not the one I am reflecting. The book is in fact a reflection of Mandela's life in prison and all the records that have been gathered of his time there (and the interesting stories of each record). This is not a history book or even a biographical book -- if you are looking for those, look elsewhere. This is a record (with a lot of pictures) of a time in his life and his new project, in the form of the Center for Memory, as an attempt to avoid the mistakes of the past by remembering them.
This is a very interesting book. I have not read his biography, so I cannot compare, though I am impelled to read it now. Mandela is an outstanding man, a towering figure of the 20th century that helped usher in the 21st. One finishes this book with faith restored.

Insight and Inspiration.......2002-08-04
On a visit to Robben Island, Cape Town we bought this book ahead of time. Although I had heard rave reviews of it on radio in South Africa and seen excellent newpaper and magazine reviews,I still thought it would be a dour summary of the history of this important site. However, I was thrilled by the evocative writing. The telling of stories in every chapter, whether we are being taken by a marine archaeologist working in Table Bay to the depths of the ocean to examine the incredible findings in this near perfect martime archaeological site, to the wonderful love story of Wilton and Irene Mkwayi who were the first people allowed to be married at the prison in teh 20th century - the couple were in their sixties, he was jailed with Nelson Mandela and she died not long after. The stories of the natural environment, the flora and fauna added richness to our explorations while on the Island. We could almost hear the myths and legends of the place and the seas ring to us as we stood on the beach and felt wind gust about us. My grandfather was in the Navy during the Second World War and I felt I could understand some of his experiences from the chapter on that time. The chapters on Robben Island as a prison, particularly a political prison gave me a whole new insight into this Island and the people who have risen to greatness despite being on it. I have since bought this book for others who have loved it and cannot recommend it too highly. J Myburgh.
Dry and Factual.......2001-04-26
Inspired by a trip to Capetown, I picked up "Robben Island" (the place where Nelson Mandela and countless other prisoners were interned for years) in the airport on my way out of South Africa. The jacket convinced me that the book would be a detailed history and a captivating read. Detailed it is; captivating it is most certainly not. If you want to get a true feeling of the island, read the words of people who inhabited it - the prisoners, the islanders, even the guards - not those of a journalistic reporter.

Book Description
In 1976, while imprisoned on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela secretly wrote the bulk of his autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom." The manuscript was to be smuggled out by fellow prisoner Mac Maharaj on his release later that year. Maharaj also urged Mandela and other prominent political prisoners to write essays on South Africa's political future. These were smuggled out with Mandela's autobiography and are now published for the first time.
Written by Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki, and four other leaders of the anti-apartheid movement, these essays provide a rare view of their thinking at a critical point in the liberation struggle, on the eve of the 1976 Soweto Uprising. The leaders describe their philosophies, strategies, and hopes. They debate such crucial issues as violent versus nonviolent forms of struggle, diversity and unity, the ideological challenge of the Black Consciousness movement, and how to accommodate different interpretations of African nationalism.
The book begins with a foreword by Desmond Tutu and a contextualizing introduction by Maharaj. Then come two essays by Mandela and one each by Sisulu, Kathrada, Mbeki, Billy Nair, John Pokela, Eddie Daniels, and Andimba Toivo ya Toivo. Each essay is preceded by a short biography of the author, a description of his life in prison, and a pencil sketch by a black South African artist.

Book Description
Robben Island prison in South Africa held thousands of black political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, who opposed apartheid. This study reconstructs the inmates' resistance strategies to demonstrate how they created a political and social order behind bars. Although survival was their primary goal, challenging apartheid was their ultimate objective. Robben Island was continually transformed by its political inmates into a site of resistance, despite being designed to repress.

Freshman Quarterback (Chip Hilton) scores big in the 90's!.......1999-10-05
Chip Hilton scores big in Freshman Quarterback. Some of the problems he faces are as relevent today as they were in the original writings. The updates are great and still don't detract from the quality and message Clair Bee originally intended. I wish I could be on Chip's team, just like I wanted to when I first read the series in the early 60's! Great Book, Great Series! Thanks for bringing them back!

Book Description
Biological Techniques is a series of volumes aimed at introducing to a wide audience the latest advances in methodology. The pitfalls and problems of new techniques are given due consideration, as are those small but vital details not always explicit in the methods sections of journal papers.
In recent years, most biological laboratories have been invaded by computers and a wealth of new DNA technology and this will be reflected in many of the titles appearing in the series.
The books will be of value to advanced researchers and graduate students seeking to learn and apply new techniques, and will be useful to teachers of advanced undergraduate courses involving practical or project work.
Labelled biomolecules are an essential tool in life science research, and non-radioactive labels are becoming increasingly important due to their convenience of measurement, greater safety and lack of disposal problems compared to radioactive labels.
This book provides practical information, background theory and protocols to allow a beginner to label many types of biomolecules, including proteins, peptides, nucleic acids and small molecules.
This book is essential for biochemists, molecular biologists and cell biologists wanting to use non-radioactively labelled molecules.
Key Features
* Aimed at researchers without specific expertise in chemistry, the book includes:
* A review of the main signal systems and labels available, indicating their strengths and weaknesses
* Discussion of the most useful strategies for labelling the various biomolecules
* 32 protocols covering common labelling needs
* Descriptions of the factors governing protocol design, enabling protocols to be modified for different applications
* Sources of information including references, data and suppliers

Book Description
Samuel Beckett's "high energy and boisterously libidinous"(Booklist) first novel--a wonderfully savory introduction to the NobelPrize-winning author during this centenary year.Written in the summer of 1932, when the 26-year-old Beckett was poor andstruggling, Dream of Fair to middling Women offers a rare and revealingportrait of the artist as a young man. Later on, Beckett would call thenovel "the chest into which I threw all my wild thoughts." When hesubmitted it to several publishers, all of them found it too literary, tooscandalous, or too risky, and it was never published during his lifetime. In the novel, Belacqua--a young version of Molloy, whose love is dividedbetween two women, Smeraldina-Rima and the Alba--"wrestles with his lustsand learning across vocabularies and continents, before a final relapseinto Dublin'" (The New Yorker). Youthfully exuberant and visibly influencedby Joyce, Dream of Fair to middling Women is a work of extraordinaryvirtuosity. Beckett delights in the wordplay and sheer joy of language thatmark his later work. Above all, the story brims with the black humor that, like brief stabs of sunlight, pierces the darkness of his vision.
Customer Reviews:
Early, polysyllabic Beckett .......2007-04-11
A one-star review should not be allowed to stand alone for this book, though I may provide inadequate challenge. A fan in particular of early Beckett, i.e. of "Murphy," and of the first part of "Watt" which features a certain Mr. Hackett, I found this exuberant, flamboyant exercise in quasi-poetic comic prose almost their equal. There are individual sentences to savor, for words-as-music (if one consider string quartets and oompah bands both musical), that describe outrageously comic situations and personae with an almost ferocious originality. Yes, the work's style, certainly the hero's stream-of-consciousness interlude, owes quite a bit to Joyce, but Beckett's signature dark humor is already richly manifest. Bleakness expressed in richness, buffoonery in elegant phrases, in color and obvious love of the medium. Beckett may have outdone Joyce in a cheeky display of authorial devices whereby he breaks boundaries of fiction and inserts himself, reveals the writing process, etc. All of this scrambles along, full of surprises, without the least pretentiousness but only the enthusiastic abandon of breakneck youth.
This would be a feast for a literary polyglot, but even if, like me, you don't understand much Latin, little French and less German and Italian, and aren't familiar with, or sure of the meanings of words like

The book shines fresh as rainwater. If you haven't yet, read "Murphy" first, then this one.
Bombastic........2002-11-21
A text ... as an autobiography: Beckett's dream of women after being ... raped by one of them.
His dream is a, now and then, hilarious and blasphemous, but mostly, irrelevant stream of grotesque and excessive verbal displays and of exaggerated metaphors. He uses different language combinations and different quotations of other authors. So, his model is obvious, but he's a bad epigone. This book has no plot, no plan and misses the basic art of writing: it reproduces feelings, instead of arousing them.
One should read a comment by another Nobel Prize winner, Naguib Mahfouz, in 'Adrift on the Nile', where he punches Beckett KO: life could be absurd, but not the royalties.
I consider the work of Samuel Beckett as grossly overrated. A good play is 'Waiting for Godot', which is in fact an evocation of people who didn't understand the words of Nietzsche's Zarathustra 'God is dead'. But afterwards it became mannerism, just a pose.
