Book Description
Assembled by two of the most distinguished botanical and ethnological scholars in Britain, this book chronicles the medicinal uses of more than 400 species used by the plain folk of Britain and Ireland. The history of these plants' usages has been mined from rich firsthand accounts captured by surveys, from more than 1000 manuscript volumes of the Irish Folklore Commission, and from close to 300 other published and unpublished sources. The book includes chosen illustrations from herbals such as those by Bock, Fuchs, and Brunfels, and a selection of color photographs by Deni Bown.

Book Description
Mandy, Kai, Debbie, and Eva have one thing they must do before graduation...win the prestigious Treemont scholarship. It's a free pass to the college of their choice. But the award has one very bizarre requirement: "Purity of soul and body."
In an effort to proclaim their "purity" to the whole school, Mandy starts the Virginity Club. The friends agree that a social service club is a great idea, but agreeing to keep the big V until graduation is another story. Because Mandy, Kai, Debbie, and Eva are each hiding something from the others. Something important.
And their secrets may cost them a whole lot more than just a scholarship....

great girl-power story with a good message for teens.......2006-09-18
When the Treemont Scholarship is announced to Ardesmore High School as $40,000 for four years of college, everyone wants to win it. But it comes saddled with an unusual requirement: "purity of body and soul." Of course, everyone assumes that means holding on to the Big V-- virginity. Four friends, Eva, Mandy, Debbie, and Kai, go out for the scholarship, each of them wanting it for their own purposes. For Eva, it's the only way to fulfill her dreams of going to Wesleyan, though she's still working on her dream first kiss. Mandy can't let anyone find out why she's after the scholarship, or that she might be losing her virginity-- soon. Debbie has to convince her father that she doesn't want to go into science, and the school that despite her reputation, she is a virgin. Kai is having trouble concealing her past, expecially when her past suddenly appears on her doorstep. The girls' secrets, if found out, could cost them something much more valuble than even the scholarship-- their friendship. This book casts virginity in a positive light, and emphasizes the importance of friendship, even when your world is crashing.
Can You Spell ZZZzzzz.......2006-06-20
First Time Amazon Reviewer. I was advised to read this book and was told that it might answer my question about the 7-year vow of celibacy. But I must say that it was the most boring book I've ever read. It just dragged on and on and on. Too many characters. Too confusing remembering who is who. After reading 1/4th of the book I thought to myself, "okay, when is it going to pick up?" I started to just not finish it, but decided that it had to get better. Now, more than half-way through, I just knew that the story would pick up---NOPE! It gets worse. The writing just drags. The characters are boring and stale. The plot is stupid and uninteresting. No excitement whatsoever. Just total confusion. The title indicates that there was a message here. What was it? Overall, this story needs some zing!
Sorry Ms. Brian, but I hope you can take criticism and advice. On your next novel, give us something with excitement that would want us to quickly turn the page and make us think about our actions before acting on it. And this book didn't say anything about if you become celibate for 7 years then you are a reborn virgin.
Virginity is like driving an Infinity (It's The Best).......2006-06-03
Why is it that the "V" word seems to be a dirty word? Society has our teens so mixed up. Virginity means clean and pure. Sex before marriage means unclean and defiled. What is so wrong about being a clean, pure virgin? If I were a man, I would want to marry a virgin girl because I wouldn't have to worry about catching a disease and we could grow together sexually. Mandy did a great thing by starting the Virginity Club. I think there should be a Virginity Club and Chastekeepers Club (from the Foolish Virgin novel) in every school. As always with teenage friends, there is going to be drama, drama and more drama. These girls kind of reminded me of my highschool years with my friends and boys that we liked. The Virginity Club girls were a clique that were trying to win a scholarship and had to live up to their rules of purity of the body and soul (I love it)! And you will too! I definitely recommend this novel to parents for their teens. My girls (ages 14 and 16) are reading this one now and will soon give their teen perspective review.
The Virginity Club.......2006-01-11
The Virginity Club, was a book that really caught my attention. Not simply because of the title, but the fact that these four best friends; Eva, Mandy, Debbie, and Kai had to endure realistic problems throughout the whole story.
The year had been the same old thing for all of them, busy schedules and lots of activities. But one day their whole lives changed. The opportunity to receive the Treemont scholarship arose. The guidelines to qualify for this scholarship were the following: The applicant must have a 3.2 or higher GPA. He or she must have demonstrated commitment to the school and community, and have three recommendations from faculty, community, and peers. The applicant must submit an essay of the reasons they think they deserve this scholarship and must exemplify purity of the body and soul.
The scholarship meant something very different to all these girls but they all had their dreams on the line. The Virginity Club was started by Mandy and the other three girls joined. The story unfolds and many secrets and betrayals are uncovered. All of the girls somehow figure out their lives and make it through their last year of high school.
The story is a good example of friendship and how high school can be hard, no matter how well off you are. "But as her friends sat and listened and lamented and laughed and hugged and comforted and cajoled and hoped, Mandy realized that even with all that imperfection, there were still perfect moments. And this was one of them." Friendships are cherished forever, and even the little things mean a lot to some. I feel very lucky that I have friends that can be shoulders to lean on in hard times, and this book really made me think of the friendships I have and how I need to be a person that everyone feels they can talk to at any time.
the virginity club, WDM Iowa.......2006-01-11
I read the book The Virginity Club by Kate Brian. This book was full of drama and was very easy to relate to. The story has 4 main characters, Eva, Kai, Mandy and Debbie. All four girls are best friends who come from four completely different families. Being their senior year all of the girls are getting ready to graduate but before the big day there is something left to do, and that is to win the Treemont scholarship offering a free pass to any college of their choice. But there is one requirement that seems to throw everyone off: "Purity of the soul and body." Mandy decides that starting the Virginity club, a social service club offering support, would be a great idea for everyone who was participating in the scholarship. But all of the girls promising to keep their virginity until the big day is another story since Kai, Mandy, Eva and Debbie all have a secret of their won. You will see as lies unfold, friendships change, and who gets the scholarship.
I read this book because the subject sounded like something that I could relate to, being in high school like the girls. Once I began reading the book and I got to know each of the characters, it was hard for me to put the book down because I got so caught up in their drama and their lives. While reading the book I came to like certain characters more then others. My favorite character was Mandy because she reminded me of myself. She was very whole hearted and caring. I didn't seem to like Debbie because of the way she acted around others. She seemed very fake and people pleasing. Overall the book was very suspenseful and fun to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about high school drama and doesn't mind reading about topics like virginity.

Book Description
The question of a possible temporal variation of the fundamental constants was raised by Paul Dirac in his "large number hypothesis" in 1937. Today it appears in the context of the search for a unified theory of the fundamental interactions. It touches both fundamental and applied physics, as the postulate of the unalterability of the constants is the foundation for modern metrology. The book presents reviews written by leading experts in the field. Focussing on the question of variations of the fundamental "constants" in time or space, the chapters cover the theoretical framework in which variations are expected and the search for variations of quantities like the fine-structure constant, the electron/proton mass ratio, g-factors of proton and neutron etc. in astrophysical and geophysical observations and in precision experiments with atomic clocks and frequency standards.

Book Description
This volume deals with Gleason's theorem and Gleason's measures and indicates the many ways in which they can be applied. The book comprises five chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to elements of Hilbert space theory. Chapter 2 is devoted to quantum logic theory. Gleason's theorem is described and proved in Chapter 3, together with proofs for measures that can attain infinite values. In Chapter 4 the possibility of applying Gleason's theorem to the completeness criteria of inner product spaces is addressed. Chapter 5 discusses orthogonal measures and the unexpected possibility of describing states on Keller spaces, as well as other applications. Throughout the book, important facts and concepts are illustrated exercises. For mathematicians and physicists interested in the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, and those whose work involves noncommutative measure theory, orthomodular lattices. Hilbert space theory and probability theory.

Book Description
This book has evolved from lectures and seminars given by the author at different academic institutions during the years 1983-1998. It can be divided into four parts.
Noncommutative measure theory is the theme of the first part of the book. The relevant quantum structures are algebraically introduced. This is then used in the axiomatic, geometric model discussed in the second part of the book, where old and partly new groups and finite-dimensional R, C, H-spaces or spheres are studied for particle-series, a bag and the four basic interactions of physics. The third part investigates infinite dimensional spaces, particularly Archimedean and non-Archimedean orthomodular spaces, which generalize classical Hilbert spaces. The last part of the book contains short reviews on related topics which are useful to have at hand.
Audience: This volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers whose work involves mathematics of physics relativity and gravitation, order, lattices, and algebraic structures.

Book Description
This book presents Jane Austen as a radical innovator. It explores the nature of her confrontation with the popular novelists of her time, and demonstrates how her challenge to them transformed fiction. Mary Waldron shows how Austen's novels exemplify the strong skepticism about contemporary notions of the proper content and purpose of fiction that is evident from family letters and other sources. In thus identifying her literary motivation, this book offers a fresh and unifying critique of the novels.
Download Description
This book presents Jane Austen as a radical innovator. It explores the nature of her confrontation with the popular novelists of her time, and demonstrates how her challenge to them transformed fiction. It is evident from letters and other sources, as well as the novels themselves, that the Austen family developed a strong scepticism about contemporary notions of the proper content and purpose of fiction. Austen's own writing can be seen as a conscious demonstration of these disagreements. In thus identifying her literary motivation, this book (moving away from the questions of ideology which have so dominated Austen studies in this century) offers a unifying critique of the novels and helps to explain their unequalled durability with the reading public.
Customer Reviews:
Reasonable and Readable.......2002-07-30
Mary Waldron discusses each of Jane Austen's major novels in a separate chapter. Her views sometimes differ from those of other well-known critics, but her reasoning seems sound. For example, many critics believe that Jane Austen failed in her portrayal of Fanny Price in MANSFIELD PARK by making her too good. Waldron argues that Austen knew exactly what she was doing and that a careful reading shows that Fanny is not as good as she appears on the surface. The famous Austen irony is at work in Fanny's character.
Waldron, thankfully, refrains from Marxist, feminist, and Freudian critical readings of Austen's texts. She uses no incomprehensible jargon. Perhaps she is part of a trend. We can hope.
