Book Description
Philosophers, Henri Bergson once observed, "seem to philosophize as if they were sealed in the privacy of their study and did not live on a planet surrounded by the vast organic world of animals, plants, insects, and protozoa." Providing a solid overview of ecological philosophy and original insights into this developing field, Minding Nature focuses on some of the most influential thinkers who, in fact, have emphasized our natural relations to the earth, our social creations, and each other.
Combining philosophy, ecology, and political theory, chapters thoroughly examine, critique, and build upon the ideas of such luminaries as Thomas Hobbes, Martin Heidegger, Ernst Bloch, Hannah Arendt, Herbert Marcuse, Barry Commoner, Rachel Carson, and Jürgen Habermas, among others. Each thinker considered has contributed significantly to both contemporary discussion and historical understanding of political, epistemological, or social aspects related to nature and, with several exceptions, stimulated constructive dialogue within progressive, democratic, and radical left circles. By challenging the notion that conservation is inherently politically conservative or that our oikos (home) must be rendered uniformly economic where ecology is concerned, they enable us to rethink the possibility of creating a more democratic and ecological society.

Comprehensive and Insightful.......2003-03-16
In this reader, David Macauley competently collects writing from philosophers of ecology all over the philosophical spectrum: phenomenology, critical theory, social ecology, etc. The writings are unique and thorough - Blanke's critique of Marcuse is the clearest I've read, and Whitebook's reading of Habermas is a required text for those progressives that subscribe to theories of liberation without knowing how to include nature. Macauley's own scholarship faces the questions of democracy and ecology. Great book!

Great Walking Tours.......2007-07-05
Great walking tours are included in this Rough Guide to Hong Kong and Macau-the directions are explicit and easy to follow and the places to which we ventured exceeded expectations. There were GREAT shopping tips for a shopping mecca and we scored on several fronts! This is a great way to introduce yourself to Hong Kong and Macau before you get there and a great way to bring what you read into reality. A must-buy for travel to Asia.
Probably the best guide around for the budget traveler to Hong Kong.......2007-06-28
I used the sixth (2006) edition of the ROUGH GUIDE TO HONG KONG & MACAU during a recent two-week stay in Hong Kong. Reading it before my trip, I found it to portray Hong Kong as a fascinating and immense place to visit, where one can spend weeks covering all manner of out of the way places. This was a great contrast to the Berlitz guide to Hong Kong I also took along, which make the region seem like a two-day stop where the only interesting thing is shopping.
There's a chapter each on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and the outlying islands. The description of each town or wilderness inside these divisions takes the form of a walking tour. The authors guide the reader through the streets well, and like all Rough Guides the maps here are clear and accurate. I unfortunately didn't visit Macau, so I cannot comment on that portion of the guide.
I didn't use the accommodation listings, as like many travelers I prefer to stay with local from hospitality associations for closer contact with the local culture. As the Rough Guide does not cover this option, I have removed one star from my rating. However, there does indeed seem to be an adequate amount of both budget and luxury accommodation, with the stops in between of course. The needs of shoestring travelers are not given short shrift here, as in the offerings of all too many guidebook publishers. I did use the recommendations for restaurants, which do a great job of steering travelers to hole-in-the-wall eateries with little English signage which might not look fancy, but which show you the real Hong Kong in a way flashier places don't.
At the end of the book one finds a history of the region, as well as some general information on Hong Kong culture. The history soberly discusses the uncertainty of Hong Kong's true autonomy after the handover, while other guidebooks I read gave only a rosy view. In these appendices there's also a list of films and books, fiction and non-fiction, about Hong Kong, letting the reader learn more about the place before he visits.
If you're an independent travelver going to Hong Kong, I'd certainly recommend ROUGH GUIDE TO HONG KONG & MACAU. I find it better than the Lonely Planet guide due to the range of its listings and the quality of its maps, and light years ahead of the paltry listings and assumption that the reader is a millionaire which one finds in many other guidebook lines.
Very good overall guide of Hong Kong and Macau.......2007-04-02
I recommend this guide, it was quite useful.
The descriptions of various areas were quite accurate, and the maps were mostly very good. The one of Macau seemed to have some minor errors, but that place is very confusing to walk around, so it could have been me. Anyway, you want the maps in this book or something pretty good, because the free tourist map is basically worthless.
I really like Rough Guides, because their reviews are very honest and balanced, and they are excellent about cross-referencing recommended locations, restaurants, hotels, etc and maps in each book. This guide is up to the same high standards, so it was very easy to use.
I would recommend that the walking tours guide (available for free at the airport, etc) is a good supplement to this guide. I used it extensively.

Book Description
Music is Pete's life. He's happiest when playing his Fender P-Bass. He doesn't care about prestige or getting girls; it's the quality of the music that matters. Then he meets the Carlisle brothers. They can't sing and they can barely play, but somehow they have a following. Pete can't resist, and he joins The Tiny Masters of Today. When the band gets a chance at real stardom, Pete wonders if he's ready. He knows the music should come first . . . but who knew selling out could be so much fun?

Rockstar/Superstar Paperback Book.......2007-10-01
This book was for a school project for my daugher and we had trouble getting it at our local book store. The book came very fast and she was able to get her project done before it was due.
Laughed/Cried.......2006-04-08
I loved this book not just for the music stuff but for the great love story of Pete and Margaret. This is not just about music it's about two people in love changing and evolving and growing and becoming different but still managing to hang on to the bond they started with. My favorite scene is when Pete goes into the mall after they broke up and accused Margaret of cheating and she's like: "you were my first boyfriend, do you know how sacred that is?" Also, at the end it is bittersweet when he comes home from all his adventures, going to LA and having everything go wrong, and he comes home and she is there for him. Not just taking him back but letting him prove himself to her, if he can, ------ ooops I better not say any more. Just buy it. It is one of the best books I have ever read.
best YA book about music ever.......2005-11-29
I am one of those older people who still read YA books if they are about something I'm into or are recommended and that is how I came to this book and it was excellent and very accurate about the current music scene. I am kind of amazed actually how good it is and smart about the music world and being a pro musician. excellent book. highly recommmend
Laughable........2005-11-23
Although relevant and relatable, "Rock Star Superstar" is a novel with obvious faults. It almost tries to be TOO relatable, with its constant references to recent and 'underground' bands such as Death Cab for Cutie, Queens of the Stone Age, Interpol, and Hot Hot Heat. The repetitive naming of everyday items associated with brand names verges on outlandish product placement, with mentions of Fender Precision basses and iPods. I feel these snippets of "current life" date and I don't see this novel as being very memorable or having any longevity.
Other reviewers have brought up the realness of the writing, and that is only because the style feels like it was written by a fourteen year old who had to do this for an English 9 project. Everything that happened in the book seemed rushed and hardly explained anything, all the characters were stereotyped to the point of unrealistic, and I found that I hardly felt for the protagonist at all.
This novel is worth a solid hour and a half of snickering, but that is all. Terribly written, terrible book.
There are much better books in this genre.
a blake nelson fan.......2004-11-21
blake nelson is probably my favorite author right now. He makes people and situations so realistic you feel like the characters are your best friends. This book tells what it's really like to be a musician and the ups and downs and how if you're an artistic person it can effect your relationships in certain ways. As with all nelson's books I don't know how to describe what I love about it except to say that it makes you realize that all the little thoughts you have about things are the same little thoughts that other people have too. If that even makes sense. I recommed this book totally to all my friends.

Book Description
Will humans adapt their ways of life to conserve the natural systems upon which their future and the living world depend? There is no simple answer to the question of whether we as humans can adapt our lifestyles in the pursuit of an environmentally sound world. Inadequate information is a limiting factor, and unforeseen events make uncertainty inevitable. Even so, choices made today can narrow or expand future options. A critical task for society today is to reverse trends that narrow these options, a task in which science plays a vital role. In his thought-provoking book, Dr. Caldwell attempts to address this issue with an integrated analysis of the interrelationships among science, the environmental movement, and public policy. Special emphasis is given to the interactions of environmentalism and science in generating public and international environmental policies.

Book Description
This gaudy, wild, and raw tale of a war-torn 17th Century Europe depicts Simplicissimus as the eternal innocent, the simple-minded survivor. We follow him from an orphaned childhood to the casual atrocities of occupying troops, through his own soldiering adventures, and up to his final vocation as a hermit alone on an island. Mike Mitchell's superb translation allows readers to enjoy more fully one of the great masterpieces of European literature and the first German bestseller.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful English translation, but NOT the complete novel.......2004-04-22
Mitchell's translation of Grimmelshausen's picaresque novel about a boy from SW Germany in the 1620s who has his life disrupted by the Thirty Years War, into which he is swept up for decades is delightfully funny. Unfortunately, Mitchell's version follows the commonly available (and artificially antiquated) Goodrick translation and omits the sixth book! Grimmelshausen wrote a whole cycle of ten novels revolving around Simplicissimus and other Thirty Years War characters, most of which are not readily available in a contemporary English translation. This, the core novel, is the most famous of the lot, but I can't help but feel disappointed by the lack of the sixth book, which was referenced by Borges (in "The Book of Imaginary Beings") and by others. I feel as though readers of "Don Quixote" must if they discover that they have read only the first part of his multi-part novel. The work of Cervantes, however, is much more readily available in English than is Grimmelshausen, so the absence is easily rectified; with the Simplicissimus books, however, one takes what one can get. Mitchell's translation of Books 1 - 5 is, fortunately, quite good, and there aren't any references in the first five books to events in the sixth book which would be weirdly jarring if the final book is missing, so there's no reason to feel cheated unless you KNOW that something has been left out. Mitchell's version is in good colloquial English and is a fast and satisfying read. I went through the whole book in a few days, finding it very difficult to put down. Mitchell writes so smoothly that the reader is swept breathlessly along just as Simplicissimus himself was.
This is THE classic novel of the Thirty Years War, which caused the death of one-third the population of Germany and involved almost every country from Sweden to Italy and from Spain to Russia, and -- strangely enough -- it's a comedy. Perhaps the war was so terrible that afterwards the only way for the survivors to stay sane was to laugh about the bitter joke which history played upon them. "Simplicissimus" is regarded by many as a definitive account of the mood and temperment of many of the survivors. Read it and laugh ... or weep. It's the story of Everyman and Everywoman caught up in an insane war in which the only option is make everything a joke, because the reality of the situation is too terrible to consider.
Excellent Book.......2000-12-15
One of the finest and funniest books I have ever read, I suggest to read along "Vida y Hechos de Estebanillo Gonzalez, Hombre de Buen Humor", also a XVII century rogue amidst the 30 years war!!. I find Grimmelhausen book very clever and defenitely a must to anybody who is interested in Europe. Unfortunately I do not read German so I miss many of the jokes, still the book is very well worth cover to cover. I am surprised that such a classic of the German Literature have not got a wider reputation: it is so amusing to read.
Classic Eye-Witness Account of the 30Years War........2000-04-11
Obviously, nobody here cared to tell you what this book is about. It's the story (some say it's autobiographical - some say it's not - The author has been a mercenary captain in the war) about a simple peasant-boy being torn into the chaos and suffering of one of Europe's longesr and THE most devastating war (half of the population in the area died). He gradually advances from being servant to being court-jester and becomes a warleader. The fascinating thing about this is:
a- Even after nearly 400 years it's easy to read.
b- Every aspect of war is described in (sometims painful) detail.
c- It's done by a man who's seen it all. So although it reads like a fantasy novel, it's authentic.
Bizzare - 30 years war - erbildungsroman - Candide -.......1997-12-30
I have read three of this series and am amazed by the core of what Grmm. was saying. Let alone the historical magnitude of a novel like this (One of the first printed material available after Guttenburg did his thing). This guy printed out what seems to me essentially the first Superman comic books. Each chapter of the three (or more) books in this series was printed as a serial. Precursor in some ways to Kafka? Simple(sic) is a hero and a knave. His love (and her Courage) now a gypsy fortuneteller, his old friend a beggar. Of course Simple finds God in the end, but it is old German stuff ain't it!
Customer Reviews:
Abridged.......2005-12-07
The listing doesn't indicate this is an abridged edition, only about half the size of the original: for the full text, try Michael Mitchell's "Simplicissimus" (1903517427).
First actual erbildungsroman-Parsifal, Peter sellers movie.......1997-09-28
This book is fantastic, if you can get through the hhistorical passages (it did happen during the tthirty-years war). This book is an example of an erbildiungs roman, a story of a person growing up and growing out. A lot like Parsifal (i've heard) or more exactly like Candide. Also some hints of Muchhausen's fantastic adventures. If you can get it, and you have some patience, you'll find this one of the better books of all time! It should be noted that this story was first printed as a series in a newpaper/journal shortly after the discovey of the printing press. Also, the next book in the series (the runagate courage) is the founding part of the "Three Penny Opera" and other German novels od the period. Courage is the mother! Also there is another adventure about Hopalong, one of simple's sidekicks. Please try it, you'll be amazed. Sbruce@mcs.net!!
Book Description
Written against a background of the Thirty Years' War and first published in 1669, this renowned picaresque classic recounts with wonderful biting satire the vagabond adventures of a not-so-simple simpleton during one of Europe's fiercest, yet ultimately most futile wars. Simplicius is an earthy character; he humiliates the mighty, confounds the gods, ridicules the pretentious. The translation uses the authoritative first edition for its text, and though it has been slightly abbreviated, no essential passages have been sacrificed. This unexpurgated translation reflects the linguistic turmoil and richness of German in the 17th century; it is ideal as the centrepiece for courses in German literature in translation and courses in the European Baroque.

NOTICE.......2002-09-14
Just a follow up to a previous poster, ISBN 1879751372 is the translation by Schultz-Behrend (the one you consider poor).
This book dwarfs, and most likely inspired Voltaire's Candide.......1998-08-27
Simplicius Simplicissimus is an artful and stunningly humorous account of the adventures of naive and utterly simple idiot boy who acquires a rich knowledge of life through a series of amazing adventures. This book was written in 1669 - nearly 100 years prior to Voltaire's Candide. Unfortunately, Amazon.com does not list the name of the translator of the offered edition. There are several English language translations available. The British translation by Walter Wallich is excellent and true to the original, preserving both the author's wit and creative prose. An American translation by George Schulz-Behrend is utterly lamentable and should be avoided at all costs - it completely sterilizes the author's humor and has the appearance of having been translated under the close and fastidious censorship of a puritan sect. It is not advisable to purchase the version offered by amazon.com, unless and until they can clearly specify the name of the translator.
