mixed bag of impressions.......2001-05-05

This book is very uneven, unfortunately. On one side, photography is splendid, historical and geological discussion are very thorough, the spirit of adventure is live and well. However, I am TIRED to find Messner complaining about his partner on every single page. And the translation is so bad, that one can almost study German grammar from the English presented.

The philosophical expositions in the book kept my feelings mixed as well. On one side (and perhaps this is due to a poor translation) it is full of heavy and sometimes overly sweet German Romanticism; one the other hand, Messner's treatment of the white void in front of him as a meditative medium is very honestly portrayed and splendidly presented.

A great adventurer, but not a great writer.......2000-08-10

The story of Reinhold Messner's walk across Antartica might have been more interesting had it been written by a professional author. Messner's first hand accounts, while interesting, do not make for especially good reading. However, there is a huge number of color photographs included that in and of themselves almost make the book worthwhile. Messner is perhaps the most accomplished extreme sportsman in the world. But he would do better letting someone else tell his fantastic stories.

A rather dull book on a not so exciting adventure........1999-03-05

Messner never gave me a feeling of what it was like crossing Antartica. He went into too much detail on all the problems he had just getting there, but was not very discriptive of life on the ice. I was never drawn into the book and thus did not have much emphathy with the characters. Felt like Messner did more complaining about things than trying to describe the adventure he was on. He complained about his life before the trip, he complained about all the problems he ran into trying to get to Antartica, he complained about his partner during and after his trip, and he complained about there being people at the South Pole. To his credit it probably was hard to write this length of book when the story line was: I got up each morning for 92 days and walked.

Boys are like buses for TJ. No sign of one for ages and then two come along at the same time! First there's charmer Ollie Axford. And just when TJ has decided that he could be the one, old flame Luke De Biasi tells her that he wants to rekindle their romance.

TJ is torn between the boys, and unhappy that it makes her look like a two-timer. But it all seems unimportant when someone close to her is taken seriously ill. More than ever, TJ needs a clear head and the support of her friends as she faces the most important summer of her life.

Mates,Dates,and Sizzling Summers.......2007-02-17

There are four girls the main character is Izzy. They are B.F.F.L and Izzy is the new one to the group so she is a little shy. All is fun until the other two have boyfriends and the other two don't. Izzy's dad has a stroke and her mum is so upset. So her dad gets better really fast and the doctor ask them if they want his family's summer house in NORTHERN ENGLAND!!! They go there for a week and did i say that Izzy has two guys who are in love with her. So they go up there and stay for a week and they buy the house and the only have it during the summer, and she finds the guy that she wants and they live happily ever after till the next book. I wonder what will happen in the next book.

The final volume of this series has a title that only applies to a few paragraphs at the end. It is just after the Diamond Dazzle. T.J. gets Feng Shui help and discovers that her waste bin has been sitting in her relationship zone. No sooner is it moved than things begin to happen. A boy she met at the Diamond Dazzle calls and a new relationship may be beginning. But then tragedy strikes her family as one of them is hospitalized and relationships are not big on T.J.'s agenda. But it does give her an excuse to pick up some food as an alternate to what is being served in the hospital and she runs into Luke. You may remember him as the two-timer from TEMPTING TROUBLE that almost spit up the mates.

Now T.J. finds herself interested in two guys in different ways. She needs a way to decide between them. This time she enlists the mates right up front so everything is in the open. But no sooner does she realize she has to make a decision then the guys run into each other. To complicate things, T.J.'s family heads for Cornwall for a bit of rest and recuperation. But T.J. still has to figure out how she feels about each guy without being a two-timer herself. As with the other books it all works out in the end but you will have to read it to find out how.

This is the last book in the series and I was happy to see the preaching that was so important in the last two volumes was gone from this one. Sure, there is still some teen angst (there wouldn't be a series without it) and some real drama. The end reminded me of the end of Calvin and Hobbs where things don't end, they just confirm that they will go on. No silly breaking up the cast to the four winds. But it really didn't have the feel of being the last book (which could be less sad for those who will miss the characters). Still, if you have made it through the first eleven books, you will not be disappointed here. Read on.
