5 out of 5 stars Reflections on keeping the riff-raff out, even in a democracy.......2006-02-25

This book is a thoughtful and serious rebuttal to the argument that wilderness preservation is an elitist (even undemocratic) concern. Backpacking, wilderness designations, restrictions on development, and the like all *look* elitist. Backpacking is a pursuit of the educated upper-middle class, which also dominates most environmental groups. The broader working and middle classes want roads, RV campsites, snowmobiles and off-road vehicles, as well as attractive hotels, restaurants, gift shops, swimming pools and other resort activities. Is there a defensible democratic argument for saying "no" to these things?

Sax insists that there is. The full argument is too nuanced to summarize here but here's a piece of it. Some people buy season tickets to cultural events because they know that a full season will expose them to things they already like (Mozart for example) as well as things they don't yet know about. People pay for librarians to recommend books we wouldn't otherwise find. Wilderness preservation in our national parks can play an analogous role, introducing motorized visitors to non-motorized things that they wouldn't otherwise experience. Done correctly, visits can force visitors to experience nature with an open-ended agenda. Visitors won't know in advance whether they'll like the experience, but they might know that they're willing to take a chance and trust the Park Service.

Sax makes many interesting points about national parks and wilderness along the way. Like most others writing in this genre, he is also very critical of the tourism-related development that characterizes most national parks. This book is not the place to go if you're looking for a history of the parks (or if you're looking for any factual material), but if you'd like thoughtful reflections on the parks in a series of essays, I strongly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A timely reminder, even 20 years later.......2000-09-30

Joseph Sax does an eloquent job of retracing the history of national parks with an emphasis on the differences between what was intended and what has been implemented. He writes not only of how our reserved lands are viewed, but also about how different sectors of the population believe these lands should be used (or not). What is particularly effective are his discourses on the different populations and the feedback effect We have on shaping policy for reserve lands. This is a very interesting book that anyone who considers themselves to be an "advocate" of wilderness or of the idea of the outdoors, would do well to read.

Josh makes a vow after his sister Angela's near-drowning: if God will keep her alive, he will become a priest. But Josh's promise is shattered the moment his friend Andy picks up a rifle at the end of a drinking party. The gun goes off, killing a classmate who lingered too long. Andy refuses to confess to the accident; instead, he forces Josh to help him hide the body. Then Andy swears Josh to secrecy by threatening to kill him—or worse, Angela. How can Josh protect her when he is racked with guilt? This view into a faithful boy's private hell is eye-opening and stomach-twisting.

Just as she did with her previous book AIMEE, Mary Beth Miller has swept up into the lives of her characters. This intense portrayal of a situation that gets out of hand will keep you thinking and remembering for a long time.

On the Head of a Pin
              Mary Beth Miller
The murder of Helen Mitchell, the local homecoming queen, tears a small town apart. Josh's drunken friend, Andy, accidentally shoots Helen at his party while playing with his father's rifle. Andy and Victor, Andy's dangerous friend, force Josh to help them bury Helen's body in the woods and frame Michael for his girlfriend's murder. Michael leaves town because of a fight with his father before he learns of Helen's death. Once he finds out, the only things that keep him going are his obsession for finding Helen's murderer and rescuing his brother from the abusive father he left behind. When Helen dies, Michael loses his ability to paint and draw, and part of his path to the truth and to clear his name is learning to trust adults again. Although Josh did not commit the murder, it haunts him because he blames himself for his sister's drowning accident the previous year that has left her comatose. He tries to act normal while guilt and his sudden loss of faith literally eat him alive. Michael's and Josh's stories collide when they must face Helen's murderer in an attempt to bring out the truth. Mary Beth Miller, author of Aimee, successfully masters the double male teenage narrative, allowing the reader to forget the gender of the author and become lost in the story. Miller also confronts the issues of guilt, loyalty to friends, the importance of social groups in teen society, and teens trusting adults in this contemporary action novel.

4 out of 5 stars When does it become too much to handle? When can you turn to an adult for help? Who can you trust?.......2006-09-10

Mary Beth Miller made a splash with her wildly successful, award-nominated debut novel Aimee, about the assisted suicide of a very troubled teen girl. In On the Head of a Pin, Miller again creates an intense psychological drama, complete with similarly self-absorbed, clueless, and mistrusting adults. On the Head of a Pin differs from her first novel, both in the gender of the main characters, and the nature of the central action. Here, we have a trio of reluctant friends who accidentally perpetuate a crime and are forced together in the cover-up, each with their own motivations, fears, and obligations. None can fully trust their others, nor himself. A fourth male is forced on the lam by his family situation, and suspicion starts to spread in his direction.

The book is about figuring out who to trust (and surprisingly, there are some adults who come through for troubled teens in here) and how far one can go without being true to oneself. One character struggles with guilt over his sister's paralyzing accident, one tries to protect a younger sibling from a step-parent's rampages, and others are trying to figure out their place in the hierarchy of high school.

I was surprised to see that formal reviews tagged this novel with a "strong antigun message." A gun is involved in the accidental crime. It is an element of the plot, and there are certainly lessons to be learned about mixing alcohol and reckless gun play. But there is no formal message, and absolutely no preaching about gun control. The strength of both of Miller's novels is her ability to raise issues such as suicide, child abuse, gun usage, organized religion, and family skeletons without giving the reader a suggested answer. She writes candidly about issues that are important for teens to consider and fit into their own personal belief structure.

4 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-05-01

When you open ON THE HEAD OF A PIN to read what the book is about, the first line that jumps out at you is "one thoughtless act can impact many lives." This is the basis for Mary Beth Miller's latest release, and it definitely holds true for the characters of ON THE HEAD OF A PIN.

Five teenagers, all as different as can be. There's Helen, the beautiful Homecoming Queen who didn't ask for her title. She wants nothing more than to finish high school and go away to college, so that she can finally bring her relationship with her boyfriend, Michael, out into the open. Her parents don't understand what she could possibly see in him, a boy already graduated from high school who spends his free time painting pictures. He's not the type of boy her parents want to see their daughter with, even if she does claim to love him. He comes from a questionable family, and he's definitely not the upstanding guy Helen should be dating.

Then there's Michael himself, a young man who spends all of his time either avoiding his father, taking care of his younger brother, Richie, working at a garage fixing cars, or taking his canvases into the woods to paint. Although he loves Helen and wants to be with her, he understands why her parents are hesitant about their relationship--after all, the tension at home is enough to drive anyone crazy.

Then there's Joshua, a boy who still torments himself over the death of his sister, Angela. He's come to the conclusion that he would be best served by becoming a priest, since he did make God a promise. But he's become increasingly worried about his best friend, Andy, who has started hanging around with Victor, a guy that gives Josh the creeps.

We have Andy, the boy who always has to be the center of attention. His stories get bigger the more he tells them, and there's always a mention of his parent's money in their somewhere. Although he's the one who inadvertently started the events that would change all of their lives, he's not about to take the fall.

And lastly the enigmatic Victor, the bad boy that everyone avoids as often as possible. He definitely has a hand in getting people riled up, but what is it about him that draws Andy to him like a moth to a flame?

Five teenagers, one gun, one disposed of body. One of the five is now dead, and another one soon will be. One goes crazy, one loses his mind with grief, and one will end up in prison. But how does this happen, to whom, and why? Pick up a copy of ON THE HEAD OF A PIN to find out--it's a great mystery for teens and adults alike.

[hardcover edition] This book is about the life of a New England railroad man in the twentieth century, and his engagement in the turmoil of 1960s America, in particular union struggles and his participation in anti-war activism in the small towns of Franklin and Medway, Massachusetts. The author's autobiographical note is succinct: "Born in the worst of the depression. Grew up in Hyde Park, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Graduated from Hyde Park High in 1951. Thrown out of Boston Latin and left Technical High School voluntarily. Served in the Army like most people of that generation and railroaded for 45 years: Boston Terminal Co. New Haven Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail. "I came from three previous generations of railroaders. Enough is enough."

enjoyable, educational and revealing 30 Nov 2006 by alexnforbes Disclaimer: I am Don Forbes' youngest son. I wasn't even aware my father was writing a book until a week or so before it was published, but it did fill me with a sense of pride. I had some pretty decent history teachers during my HS and college years, but there's something inherently more interesting learning about the past from your own father's frame of reference, and what he was doing 12+ hours a day for most of his life. I was impressed with his story telling abilities, as if he kept a working journal while on the job from his teens up until retirement. I have a better understanding of what it meant to work for the railroad, it's inherent dangers, the political strife between worker and corporation in an industry where unions are so important in protecting the rights and well-being of the employee, and how some railroading men weren't afraid to try and make a difference at the risk of losing a decent steady income. The references to politics, religion and family may have some people skimming over about a third of the book, but for those who appreciate having a deeper understanding of who the author is, and enjoy real-life accounts of recent history from ordinary people, will appreciate the forthrightness. As Benjamin Franklin once wrote, 'Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.' I believe my father has done both in his lifetime. Thank you for leaving me something besides my good looks, Dad. [ Reply ]

A man stumbles upon a gorgeous, hide-away retreat and spa where angels unwind from their ever-present divine duties. Although "just" a work of fiction, whether or not the many conversations with these glorious angels actually took place, is up to the reader to decide. The author presents a wide range of spiritual teachings through his extremely vibrant characters and from his own experience that are easily understood: profound metaphysical truths that even a child would love to explore. Read this story and hear what the angels have to say!

...Keith Varnum, author and seminar leader, as it appeared in THE DREAM DAILY SUN.

5 out of 5 stars Divinely Inspired .......2005-02-16

I read very few novels these days, and Angels on Assignment was a refreshing break that renewed my spirit. A botched room reservation forces the main character, Michael, to look for other lodging on vacation. Remembering something that the woman in the airport gift shop told him, he manages to find his way to the secluded resort she mentioned. He is initially refused a room. The desk clerks change their minds when they notice the lapel pin he is wearing, a gift from the woman in the gift shop. He soon finds out that all of the other guests are angels on vacation. What follows is quite a journey as the angels work toward teaching him what he already knows but has forgotten. Michael Howard has placed some of the thought-provoking passages in the book in bold print, but I have found many more. To those who have been on their journey for a long time, these words will have deep meaning. They will cause the unenlightened to question life and their own thoughts, and will no doubt change at least one belief. Changes in our thoughts and beliefs change our lives, and I know that mine will change for the better. I found many of these thoughts and statements to be profound, reminding me of what I already know and have also forgotten. This work was, without a doubt, divinely inspired. I intend to read it more than once. At just 150 pages, it is easy reading with an incredibly powerful message. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in three evenings. Don't miss this one!

This book comprises papers that were presented at the Symposium on Configurational Mechanics, which was held within the framework of the 5th EUROMECH Soil Mechanics Conference, Thessaloniki, 17-22 August 2003. Configurational mechanics concerns any sort of change or "motion" in the material configuration, thus it is a mechanics in the material space. This framework provides a novel and unifying view on otherwise diverse disciplines like fracture mechanics, phase transitions, plasticity and dislocation theory. The articles concern both theoretical and computational mechanics, electroplasticity, magnetoelasticity, elastoplasticity as well as granular, multiphase and micropolar media.

Is becoming a 'straw man' an informed choice of an individual, or does acceptance into a specific culture, in many instances, exclude any other alternative? Does free will exist, and if so, then of a fashion, aren't we all 'straw men,' ultimately shaped by the width and breadth of personal life experience?

How profane is this story primarily focused on the developing relationship between two first year law students in 1968 is in large measure dependent on one's preconceived notions of Harvard and what, ostensibly, the university and its' students represent. My view is Vaugh A. Carney is a bit too humble. If ever the overused term *profound* is to be appended, with this short book, the time is at hand. It is a timeless tale where one need look no further that the medium of the moment to recognize how easily and expediently a new personna can be created. Who I am can be as mutable as who you think you want me to be.

Philip R.Z. Anchorage and Thomas Galligan by all appearances arrive on campus from entirely separate realities that come to intersect only through the vagaries of randomized roommate selection, assuming any outcomes are truly random. Over the course of what amounts to little more than one semester, they will experience a wide range of encounters that will irrevocably direct the future course of their lives. STRAW MAN is a tale that encompasses the daily interaction of the Harvard Yard; the palpable arrogance found in the ivy encrusted lecture halls, and the seamier side of Boston, the combat zone, with cameo appearances from a couple of 'good ole boys' who went on to notoriety in the 1990's. There are people you know, people you think you know, people you hope you never get to know, and by the denouement, you are left to contemplate, who is it that you really know, self included.

If you overlook this book, you have missed an enriching opportunity. I, for one, anxiously await whatever next Mr. Carney has to offer us, hopefully, in the very near future.

5 out of 5 stars In Search of Phillip Anchorage.......2001-01-08

Thomas Galligan arrived at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the fall of 1968, easily one of the most exciting times that history has ever offered a student. And Cambridge was the center of it all. Harvard University had, knowingly or unknowingly, assembled the most diverse group of students ever to grace an East Coast learning institution. Among the brightest and the best was Phillip R. Z. Anchorage.

Phillip Anchorage didn't exist, of course. And so it became necessary for the author, Vaughn Carney, to invent him. Carney warns us at the outset to "Trust the tale, not the teller." With the possible exceptions of those "bad boys" from Yale, Willy "Bubba" Quentin and Clarence Tolliver, none of the characters are really who or what they seem to be. We must watch them unfold in a manner not unreminiscent of M. Butterfly.

But the truth is in the tale. When Anchorage enjoys his moment of truth in Contracts class, he speaks to a sentiment that many of us - outraged by the war in Vietnam, the convention in Chicago and the deaths of King and Kennedy - held to be self evident: "that each and every action can and should be decided on one basis and one basis alone: fairness." In that one sentence, Anchorage identifies the high water mark of the "nonnegotiable demands" of the class of dreamers that entered Harvard Law School in 1968. Those of us, who were there, have watched it slowly - ever so slowly - recede.

I loved this book. I never met Phillip A. Z. Anchorage; nor, lamentably, was I ever invited to one of his parties. So I can't wait until Hollywood gets ahold of those "harlots of the tongue" or the Two O'Clock Club. Like I say, I never met Phillip A. Z. Anchorage. At least, I don't think I met him. Or did I?

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly original and riotously funny; great message.......2000-10-30

Mr. Carney has written a wild, bizarro account of the first year at Harvard Law School, completely unlike "The Paper Chase" and "One-L". It is both crack-up funny and prurient tending toward pornographic in some places, but underlying all of this is a wickedly ironic wit that tweaks the myth of meritocracy, pulls the reader along in the wake of its elegant prose, and delivers a knockout punch at the end. I had to read it a second time to pick up all that I'd missed the first time around, and I found I liked it even more. And be warned: the two farce characters who are obviously based on Slick Willie and Clarence Thomas will make you howl. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars a society at war against itself.......2006-03-14

MAN OF STRAW is a politically committed satire against the upper middle-classes in the time of the empire of William II (Kaiser Wilhelm, 1859 - 1941, the German emperor and king of Prussia from 1888 to 1918 who asserted Germany's claim to world leadership and was made to abdicate at the end of World War I, at the time when this novel was written). As such, Man of Straw describes the kind of conditions in European society which led to World War I.

The novel's antihero Dr Diederich Hessling is the son of a small factory owner in the small town of Netzig. He is described as the archetype of the mediocre but "serviceable" loyal subject, and the negative journey that traces his development towards maturity and social recognition constitutes an indictment of the kind of citizen created by authoritarian Power in a time of increased commercialist and military values.

The action takes place in the 1890s, and even though the question of the origins of the Great War is still debated nowadays, it does much to expose the perilousness of the ideas that were taking root at the time. Diederich's morally reprehensible acts since childhood are his best asset to grow and prosper in society. His final oration on the occasion of the erection of a monument to the Emperor in town is a celebration of Germany's right to mastery of the sea. From the historical point of view, the novel is therefore an accurate reflection of the relevance of the threatening transformation of the relations between the states and the (arms) industry that had been taking place since the Industrial Revolution. Governments needed not so much the actual output of weapons, but the capacity to produce them on a wartime scale, if the occasion arose. This new and complicated state of affairs went hand in hand with the development of socialist ideology (with Ferdinand Lassalle in Germany), which was experienced as a source of terror on the part of part of society. The combination of these two novel results of the Industrial Revolution (the industrialisation of war and the arms race on the one hand, and the rise of the socialist and workers movements on the other) combined to produce a terrified moral state in sections of society who sought refuge within the ideological framework of a strong movement, Nationalism.

The role of the press as the link between Authority and the Citizen is originally presented in the novel. The newspapers, even those with a Liberal outlook, such as Netzig's, are fond of including royal anecdotes in their reports, that do much to encourage the belief of a direct, personal relationship between the subjects and the monarch. This over-simplification of affairs results in the citizens' readiness to wage war against England on the basis of trivial anecdotes in gossip columns: "We needed a strong fleet against England, which must be absolutely smashed; it was the deadliest enemy of the Emperor. And why? In Netzig they knew all about it. Simply because His Majesty had once, in a lively mood, given the Prince of Wales a friendly kick in a tempting portion of his anatomy." These flippant explanations, and the inevitable suspicious of England's commercial power, are the means that lead to a re-interpretation of history and national hatred. "I hate England as only Frederick the Great hated that nation of thieves and tradesmen," says Diederich. But the fact is that he had not particularly cared about these sentiments until the time of the introduction of the Army Bill that seeked to augment Germany's naval power. The sentiments of the loyal subject are therefore both constant and voluble: they seek to satisfy the whims of Authority, even if Authority changes its mind, and in order to know Authority's mental state - which is so necessary in order to know one's own opinions - the role of the press is priceless. As a matter of fact, in his zeal for impersonating the mind of the monarch, Diederich goes so far as to seek to anticipate the Emperor's ideas, which results in a comic series of events during the middle part of the novel.

The originality of the novel is also present in the depiction of the working classes and the Social Democrats in general "the men without a country", who are by no means seen as an unempowered group. The majority of the workers in Diederich's factory are politically committed and mature enough to see their chances to take part in parliamentary and power politics. The most serious thematic thread in the novel actually deals with the secret pact between the socialist workers and the nationalist patriots to outdo the middle-class Liberals in Parliament. This way, the German educated Liberals are seen as the true victims of the state of affairs in the town, previously a stronghold of Liberalism. The novel ends as a bitter criticism of the passivity and lack of adequate mental and practical resolution of this sector of society, that allowed itself to withdraw and be teased off all its power in the face of the progress made by radicals on both the right and the left. It is for this cause that the death of old Buck, the Liberal patriarch of the town, is presented at the very end of the novel and constitutes its conclusion. In his deathbed, his soul seems to suffer remorse for his failure to save educated, middle-class Liberalism from the trial that it suffered in Netzig and in this way Heinrich Mann conveys to us his belief that men's souls are not saved on ideas alone, but on ideas as combined with successful action, both in the family and social spheres.

Eric Hobsbawm describes the kind of historical background of the novel with clarity: "In practical terms, the danger was not that Germany concretely proposed to take Britain's place as a global power, though the rhetoric of German nationalist agitation readily struck the anti-British note. It was rather that a global power required a global navy, and Germany therefore set out (1897) to construct a great battle-fleet, which had the incidental advantage of representing not the old German states but exclusively the new united Germany, with an officer corps which represented not Prussian "junkers" or other aristocratic warrior traditions, but the new middle classes, that is to say the new nation:" That is to say the Hesslings and the whole bourgeois society which seemed unable to disentangle itself from the aspect of war that has been a feature of world history since that time.

A memorable section of the novel, in chapter V, involves the representation of a play "written" by the wife of the town's governor, during which a parody of the creative process is presented by putting it at the level of this woman's diminished abilities: "Afterwards one does't know how it happens. It is worked out so mysteriously in one's mind!" So-called bourgeois art is this way criticized, since the creative gift is in the opinion of the characters mysteriously bequeathed by military success: "If my great ancestor had not won the battle of Kröchenwerda, who knows if I should have written "The Secret Countess"?"

A more auspicious view of art is presented by old Buck, who in this section presents the conformist character of his aspirations, when he compares himself with the artistic pictures in the theatre building - a description of a particular style and time, aiming at permanence but not at reproduction: "I suceeded in having our modern street plan altered in order to save this house and this paintings. They may only have the value of descriptive records. But a picture which lends permanence to its own times and manners may hope for permanence itself." From this moment of acknowledged defeat towards the end, the novel loses some of its momentum, but overall does not fail to represent something more than just a representation of a certain time and place, since its alluring suggestiveness manages to encompass issues that are present to us in our times.

5 out of 5 stars Mann warns of the dangers of blind nationalism.......2003-03-13

Heinrich Mann's novel paints a portrait of the Second Reich through the eyes of Diedrich Hessling, an unconsequential little man who bullied his way into society using superpatriotism (he even curls his mustache so that it resembles the emperor's) and nationalism as a crutch, finally gaining status as a prominent conservative businessman, in the process being metamorphosed into a mini-Kaiser. His struggle was a reflection of the Second Reich's attempt at world domination through nationalism and Social Darwinism.

His use of patriotism to the emperor was used when he manipulates someone into stating that the Hohenzollerns were Jews, accusing him of lese-majeste. At that man's trial, Diedrich is accurately portrayed as "an average man, with a commonplace mind,... without courage so long as things are going badly for him and tremendously self-important as soon as they had turned in his favour"

Diedrich doesn't hesitate to make alliances when expedient and to boost his star higher, such as his association with his nemesis, Napoleon Fischer, a Social Democrat machinist at his factory. On one occasion, to cover up his own mistake in miscalculating the dimensions of the New Patent Cylinder Machine, he bribed Fischer to sabotage the machine so that he had a case to return it. Later, the two agreed to help each other in their political ambitions.

Thus Diedrich used his patriotism and anti-Social Democratic stance as ways to boost himself onward and upward, yet willing to make alliances with his alleged enemies, similar to the way Bismarck used nationalism as a tool to rally the Liberals against his wars against Austria and the south German states against France, all for his own personal power.

The importance of Wilhelm II's attempted surpassing of Bismarck must be reiterated. Diedrich's colleague warns people of the danger of any man emulating Bismarck: "Weak and pacifistic by nature, he becomes noisy and dangerous. Without a doubt the victories of his vanity will serve commercial ends. First his travesty of opinion brings a man to prison for lese-majeste. Afterwards he reaps his profit" So by virtue of the chain rule, Diedrich was in fact emulating Bismarck, making him not only a mini-Kaiser, but also a mini-Iron Chancellor. And this illustrates Mann's criticism of Bismarck's self-motivating political profit, perpetuated in the person of Diedrich.

Mann's novel is a portrait of pre-war Wilhelmine Germany (1888-1914). He thus saw as reasons for Germany's defeat in World War I the blind nationalism of the people and their obedience to the autocratic rule of the Kaiser. It's a warning to be heeded by any nation making rumblings toward war.

... how Hitler, World War II and the Holocaust could happen. At least that's how I felt after reading it (and I'm German). The book describes the life of a man named Diederich Häßling, who grows up in pre-WWI Germany. He learns to respect, to love authority unquestioningly, even when it hurts him or is obviously unjust. And when he comes into a position of authority himself, he employs it just as brutally and unjustly. The reader looks on in horrified fascination and thinks: "if people really thought like that, then no atrocity is impossible..."

Straw Man is a delicious look at New York's artworld in the days when the Met ("the Urban" in the book) was expanding into Central Park. The hero has more money than happiness; his adolescent fantasies revolve around the women in million-dollar paintings, and his grown-up pursuit of an enigmatic woman is a great read. (Especially apt is the scene in which he has to walk a long way uptown because he doesn't have anything smaller than a $100 bill for a cab.) If you're interested in the New York artworld, you MUST read this book.
