    Book Description

Economic growth since the Industrial Revolution has been achieved at great cost both to the natural environment and to the autonomy of communities. What can a Marxist perspective contribute to understanding this disturbing legacy, and mitigating its impact on future generations? Renowned social theorist James O'Connor shows how the policies and imperatives of business and government influence--and are influenced by--environmental and social change. Probing the relationship between economy, nature, and society, O'Connor argues that environmental and social crises pose a growing threat to capitalism itself. These illuminating essays and case studies demonstrate the power of ecological Marxist analysis for understanding our diverse environmental and social history, for grounding economic behavior in the real world, and for formulating and evaluating new political strategies.

2 out of 5 stars Not too impressed with this one..........2007-06-16

            Dear Reader,

I checked this book out from the library and quickly read the entire book
in a few hours. It relayed the story of a small teenage boy who escapes to Arcataz Island, home of the famous prison, to get away from a group of bullies who are determined to take vengeance upon the boy. However they manage to follow him over and he gets trapped overnight on the island trying to elude the dangerous gang. The story continues with the struggles and adventure that follows.

Though Someone is Hiding on Alcatraz Island proved to be an exciting story, that is about its only redeeming quality. I found the language to be far too simplistic for its comtent. The words and settence stucture that Bunting uses to tell her story seem appropiate for a childrens novel; however some of the content was innopropate for that age group. She also tries to bring in some underlying issues with memories the main character has of his father, but never seems to make much of a point. I did like how the main character chooses to have mercy on his foes instead of taking the revenge he could of had. The only other lesson that is to be learned from the story is that you can make a difference no matter how small you are, but I did not find the lesson at all touching.

So, at best, this book is exciting, but I would suggest that you first borrow it from the library before purchasing it.

            Sincerely,

            Frank Opinon

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!.......2006-10-18

I stumbled on this book in my local Library, borrowed it, read it, and then bought it. It is one of the best books I have read. Danny (the star of the book) lives with his mom and grandma and one day saves an elderly lady from a mugger. But it turns out that the kid who was doing the mugging was the brother of Priest, a member of the toughest gang around. This gang refers to themselves as the Outlaws and consists of Cowboy, Maxie, Jelly Bean, and Priest. The Outlaws are now out to get Danny who, to escape them, jumps on a tour boat heading for the abandoned prison - Alcatraz. Little does Danny know that the Outlaws have followed him...
Someone is Hiding on Alcatraz Island by Eve Bunting is a wonderful book. It contains a lot of action, suspense, and leaves you wondering how -and IF they will make it out alive. As Danny says, 'Who said the morgue wasn't in use anymore?'

3 out of 5 stars it was ok.......2005-06-21

This book is about a teenager named Daniel but most people called him Danny. Danny saw an old lady getting robbed and so Danny goes and beats up the guy who robbed the lady. Little does he know that the guy he beat up is the brother of one of the most toughest gangs in school. He goes to Alcatraz Island to escape but he ends up trapped there with the outlaws.I liked it because it has a lot of action.

            3 out of 5 stars alcatraz rewiew.......2005-03-17

i disliked the book beacause of the story.the setting and the names of the characters, and the look of the characters reminded me of more of a rodeo in the west rather than a gang that terrorises him.
the best part of the book i think is when danny was running from a gangmember named jellybean and was climbing up a ladder when danny kicked him off the ladder and left him lying there, almost dead.
the vivid story element would have to be the plot.

2 out of 5 stars someone is hiding on alcatraz island.......2005-03-16

I really did not like my book it was too long and it just wasnt my type of genre and the title make it sound more interesting than it really is.

The best part of the book is the beginning when the boy goes to alcatraz island.

The setting was pretty good to me b/c its kind of similair to todays society. The characters werew pretty cool to b/c the also were similair to today society.

                      Book Description

Multifractal theory was introduced by theoretical physicists in 1986. Since then, multifractals have increasingly been studied by mathematicians. This new work presents the latest research on random results on random multifractals and the physical thermodynamical interpretation of these results. As the amount of work in this area increases, Lars Olsen presents a unifying approach to current multifractal theory. Featuring high quality, original research material, this important new book fills a gap in the current literature available, providing a rigorous mathematical treatment of multifractal measures.

                        Book Description

Described by Carl Van Doren as "a harmonious human multitude," Benjamin Franklin was the most famous American of his time, of perhaps any time. His life and careers were so varied and successful that he remains, even today, the epitome of the self-made man. Born into a humble tradesman's family, this adaptable genius rose to become an architect of the world's first democracy, a leading light in Enlightenment science, and a major creator of what has come to be known as the American character. Journalist, musician, politician, scientist, humorist, inventor, civic leader, printer, writer, publisher, businessman, founding father, philosopher, Franklin is a touchstone for America's egalitarianism.

Volume 2 takes Franklin from his marriage in 1730 to his retirement as a printer at the beginning of 1748, examining the mysteries of the illegitimate William Franklin's birth and mother and Franklin's increasing civic activities--starting the Library Company in Philadelphia in 1731, forming Pennsylvania's first volunteer fire company, and becoming an advocate for a clean Philadelphia environment. J. A. Leo Lemay assesses Franklin's numerous writings, attributing to him for the first time a deistic Indian speech, remarking on his use of the second African American persona in journalism, and analyzing his publishing sensation of 1747, The Speech of Miss Polly Baker. These belletristic works are complemented by Franklin's religious, political, and scientific writings, which he produced prodigiously.

Although countless books have been written about the Civil War, the role of black troops has been consistently underrepresented until recently. Nearly 180,000 of them fought--mostly for the North, but a handful even took up arms for the slaveholding South. Many wanted to serve at the start of the conflict, but a variety of factors kept them on the sidelines. Until Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, many Union leaders--including the president--held that the war was not about slavery. Racist views caused some to question further the value of black soldiers; there was also genuine concern about how Confederates would treat captured blacks.

But, as Noah Andre Trudeau reveals, black soldiers demonstrated bravery and professionalism from the moment they suited up. He recounts well-known events, such as the 54th Massachusetts' attack on Fort Wagner, as well as less familiar ones, such as blacks' involvement in the war's last directed combat one month after Lee's surrender. There were atrocities, too: in 1864, Confederates slaughtered black prisoners of war at Fort Pillow (Southern historians once disputed this brutal act of cold-blooded murder, but most scholars accept it as true today). Although Trudeau sometimes sacrifices his narrative drive to excessive detail, Like Men of War remains a compelling book full of strong battle scenes. --John J. Miller

"Like Men of War" has never received the exposure that it should have or I feel is entitled to. Trudeau is a prize winning Civil War author, who tackled some obscure subjects. We benefit from this by seeing parts of the war that just do not coverage. "Like Men of War" is an excellent history of the USCT, its' development and battles. This is not a small book but it reads well. A small book could not do the USCT justice.

I do not know if it is possible to understand the American Civil War or Black History without reading this book.

This book offers a history lesson of the Negro within the ranks of our great military, some ver positive and some very negative. It is well written and presents a good picture of the civil war and fighting as a black soldier. As a retired military officer, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and would like to see more research in this area.

Per Mr. Ford's (a write-in) comments on black soldiers and their inability to stand and fight, I will offer the following comments:

Some of the most important tenants in producing successful soldiers are training, discipline, leadership and morale. Not making excuses for any soldier of any racial background who flee any battlefield (or Mr. Fords comments), I think that if one properly researches the history of the black soldier during the civil war, one would find that they were not in many instances very well trained, disciplined, nor led. There primary function was to perform menial duties (grave diggers, personal aides, and other non combat related duties). In addition, to many white officers, it was considered a slap in the face to command black troops. So I oft wonder who trained them and how creditable was the training? In addition, who led these men and what were their qualifications to lead?

Although not a very appeasing statement, but American soldiers throughout history have been routed on the battlefield. This is demonstrated throughout the Civil War by both Union and Confederate soldiers. During the First Battle of Manassas, union soldiers ran after being routed by confederate forces. Also, during the battle at Gettysburg confederate soldiers fled the battlefield in the face of adversity and in some cases after poor leadership decisions.

More recently, American soldiers were routed during the Africa Campaign of WWII and also during Korea where many American soldiers fled the battlefield in the face of overwhelming odds, lack of leadership, proper training, decipline, morale, and proper logistics.

Although Mr. Ford commentary is truly eloquent, he should do a better job researching and clearly presenting the facts.

This proves to be quite an interesting book about the black troops during the Civil War. Its definitely is a military history of those troops instead of social or political history. The author appears to know his stuff and I supposed for many neo-Confederates out there, this book will sound very politically incorrect since it shows the brave soldiers of the south murdering defenseless black POWs after some battles. Of course, I am sure the black troops did some paid back as well which in the face of war, was only proper. This seem to distract many readers but overall, this book is about the black troops of the war and how they fought, performed and conducted themselves. All was not glory for them but in hindsight, they did quite well considering the situation they were in.

4 out of 5 stars Good, sprawling account of the USCT.......2002-07-11

"Like Men of War" is a good book that details the overlooked exploits the United States Colored Troops from the Civil War. Most battles and skirmishes in which black troops took part are mentioned here. The book's only faults are its ponderous length, its discounting of massacres committed by the U.S.C.T. against Confederates, and its discounting of the contributions of blacks to the Southern cause. (Unknown to many, there were blacks who sided with the CSA and did shoulder arms for it.) Otherwise, this book is good primer on a part of the Union army that at the end of the war was 10% of the Union's total force.

                        Book Description

What is fascism? Is it revolutionary? Or is it reactionary? This book argues that it is both: fascism unleashes violence against the left and ethnic minorities, but also condemns the bourgeoisie for its 'softness'. Kevin Passmore opens his book with a series of 'scenes from fascist life' - a secret meeting of the Romanian Iron Guard; Mussolini meeting the king of Italy; a rally of Hungarian doctors calling for restrictions on the number of Jews entering the profession; the shooting of 1800 Jews by Reserve Police Battalion 101 at Jozefow in Poland in July 1942. He then looks at the paradoxes of fascism through its origins in the political and social crisis of the late nineteenth century, the history of fascist movements and regimes in Italy and Germany, and the fortunes of 'failed' fascist movements in Romania, Hungary and Spain. He shows how fascism used and uses propaganda and popular culture to propagate itself and how it exported its ideas outside Europe, through Nazi and Spanish post-war escape routes to Latin America, for instance. The book concludes with a discussion of the recent revival of the extreme right in Austria, Italy, France, and Russia.

The term "fascism" gets tossed around a lot. Passmore helps distinguish between groups with fascist elements (a sizable group) and "dyed-in-the-wool" fascists (few and far between, especially nowadays). This book would serve as a good primer to help enlighten discussion of comparative politics. Also, anyone engaging in political discourse would be well-served to use this text as a guidepost before hurling "fascist" accusations at commentators from the conservative side of the political spectrum.

5 out of 5 stars This is a small yet powerful book.......2007-05-15

This is the first book on Fascism that I have read so far. I was curious about Fascism because it was the prevailing political and economic system in both Germany and Italy at the beginning of World War 2 and that war is one of my favorite reading subjects.

I found the book readable, detailed and, very clear. The book carries a lot of information for being only an introduction to Fascism. You will find out that Fascism is a broad term that, nonetheless, did not fully describe any system defined as such (fascist) in any of the countries where it is recognized that it took hold. Fascism is related to many concepts such as: corporatism, ultra nationalism, paramilitarism, anti-feminism, racism (or at least xenophobia), autarky, totalitarianism, rule by terror, messianic message, tight control of unions and labour, presence of both radical and conservative social and economic measures, cult of personality (of a strong, supreme leader), and bent on welfare and total employment for the "true" nationals. Sometimes it bordered on Paganism (as in Nazi Germany) and sometimes it was firmly bound to a religion (Catholicism in Franco's Spain and the Christian Orthodox Church in Romania).

The author also presents an outlook of the current political movements throughout Europe (mostly) that could be termed fascist like. This is indeed a thorough introduction to Fascism. Five stars for this book.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Clear Overview of a Complex Subject.......2006-04-07

When one considers the ideology of fascism many notions and images spring to mind: totalitarianism, nationalism, ultranationalism, racism, oppression, censorship, violence, Nazism, Para militarism, right wing conservatism, radicalism, eugenics and the Holocaust. As Kevin Passmore suggests, Fascism is all these things and not these things, as it has a mercurial nature. In fact, "...fascism, as Ortega y Gasset says, is always `A' and not `A'." (p.11)

Passmore devotes most of this text to the inter-war years where fascism manifested in its most blatant forms. Although Mussolini and Hitler have been labelled or are the most famous fascists in modern history, their brand of fascism, however, and how they developed, are quite different. For the most part, fascism is multi-layered and complex, as it attracts all genders, and people from all classes and political sensibilities. To define this elusive term, the author has attempted to reveal the specific historical context in which fascism, in its various forms, raised its head - and from these studies, similarities can be made.

What are the common denominators inclusive to fascism? According to Passmore, its central purpose is national unity. However it is a national unity in the way "they" define it. He goes on to write that all "isms", that is to say, feminism, socialism, communism, capitalism etc., particularly for the ultranationalism form of fascism, are rejected wholesale, as the entire nation must conform to the one ideal. Most common to fascism is the desire to rid their particular country of all foreigners, to ensure all aspects of social and economic life are controlled. Immigration is stopped totally and immigrants are either persuaded to leave the country or, in the case of the Nazis, exterminated. Moreover, Passmore believes that Fascist social policy, for example, "...is consciously shaped by ultranationalism, political discrimination, and racism." (p. 150)

Fascism today, Passmore suggests, continues to exist in its many forms across the globe, however, these political parties choose not to call themselves fascist as the term has too many negative connotations. The author prefers to call the new fascists, "national-populism", as they are essentially the rise of the extreme right, included in such countries as France, Denmark, Austria and the United States. In France, the far-right party, the French National Front, focuses on the "foreign elements" and the advance of socialism, feminism and immigration. Whereas in the United States, nation populism has manifested in the form of "militias", white supremacist who are radically against government regulation or intervention of any kind.

Although a brief overview of fascism and its whys and hows, for the most part, it is clearly written, easily understood despite its complex subject matter, and a text that makes the reader want to investigate further.

5 out of 5 stars A solid introduction to a surprisingly complex subject.......2005-11-27

Fascism is one of the more complex political movements of the past century and one of the more difficult to satisfyingly define. Philosophers sometimes seek the necessary and sufficient conditions for defining some term or concept. The problem with fascism is that while there are a number of necessary conditions, they are not in themselves sufficient in designating a movement as fascist. Fascism is always ultranationalistic, racist, and anti-liberal, but these are features it holds in common with a host of other right wing political movements. In the end, identifying a movement as fascist is more of an art than a science, akin to the famous definition of obscenity by U. S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart: "I know it when I see it." Kevin Passmore's fine book can help one know it when one sees a fascist movement.

It is important to understand this movement for a host of reasons, many of them historical but some of them contemporary. For instance, calling someone a fascist has become a commonplace of contemporary political vituperation. In the 2004 election I heard a number of people call Bush a fascist, and while he holds a few positions in common with fascism, they are in the end very few and the differences significant. Less understandably, I heard more than one right wing commentator call Kerry a fascist, which is beyond comprehension, since he does not espouse a single position that connects with what we understand as fascism. So we really do need to understand what it means when we properly identify someone as a fascist. Passmore's approach is primarily to discuss a host of national situations from a historical perspective that were at the time either self-identified as fascist or, in the wake of WW II and the utter discreditation of fascism, that share a significant number of features with pre-WW II fascism. Obviously this approach means discussing Italian and German fascism, but Passmore also spends a good amount of time on nations that will be unfamiliar to all but serious students of Eastern Europe, such as Romania.

The picture that gradually emerges of fascism is of a movement that is anti-modern, rascist, masculine and anti-feminist, corporatist, rabidly nationalistic, rural rather than urban, largely undemocratic, leans towards a dictatorship, tends to be anti-free market and at the same time anti-trade union, and paramilitary in nature. What can be bewildering is that not every incarnation of fascism can be characterized by all of these features. This is less true of pre-WW II fascism than post-war, when movements that are largely fascist have been forced to espouse democratic principles and even claim not to be racist. In the end, what one gains is not a crystal clear of what is or is not fascism, but a general impression of what might count as a fascist movement.

This is not a well-written book, which is the only complaint I would like to make about it. The structure is awkward and one chapter does not naturally flow into one another. There seems to be little rhyme or reason why one bit of the subject is dealt with in one part of the book and not another. Furthermore, Passmore never really states clearly what he sees as lying at the heart of fascism. I managed to figure out what he meant by typing out various identifying characteristics as I read through the text, but unless one undertakes some such exercise, one could end the book a bit confused about the whole matter. Had the book been more clearly structured, it would be a far more valuable introduction to the subject. In the end, one does get a good sense about fascism, but only if one is willing to work hard towards that end. The author doesn't help the reader as much as he might have. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend this book. Although we are unlikely to see the kind of fascist movements that we saw in the interwar years, it represents tendencies in political thinking that have never really disappeared and persist even today. We need to be sensitive to these tendencies and prepared to deal with them in the future.

He contradicts himself, has some flawed statements and weirdly connects the feminine and racial issues on an elementary level. Some jargon in this book is also incomprehensible. And, I bet $100 this guys a romanticist (far above his other personality levelers of realist and classicist creativity stabilizers - the three are balanced out in one way or another) - like for example Jean-Jacque Rousseau. I must also highly disagree with Steven Tooley (below) .... However, that of course is my opinion.

All right, all the above does not matter. ALL the time that I see crap like this, I automatically throw it out. Nevertheless, this guy comes up with some incredible insights and very original outlook and reasoning beyond even the above average humanities writer (he is a history lecturer at Cardiff - with some good horse sense of politics and philosophy). He also injects parts of history that other authors have not made of certain unique connections. He has totally analyzed this subject - Fascism - and gives you different and in-depth angles to look through. He takes you a cross "paths" that have never been crossed before.

Read this with tongue-in-check mentality. You can easily see and discard this nonsense. There is highly valuable information here. This person has made a (small) book of only 158 pages, but he jams it full of Great information on Fascism. I would have sworn, after reading this, that I had just finished a large book. There is no real filler here (except for the quirks mentioned above).

Oxford Press does it again - but the other "very short introductions" series are not as high of caliber as this is.

These three books will give you THE best insight on Fascism. No others come close to the brilliance of the material.

                        1) Fascism by Roger Griffin (edited by Roger Griffin) This is the best book on Fascism. There is no better way to truly understand something unless to go to the SOURCE(S).
                        2) Fascism A Very Short Introduction by Kevin Passmore
                        3) The Nature of Fascism edited by S.J. Woolf (NOT the book by R. Griffin on the same title)

In conclusion, Oxford University Press (UK) and the University of Chicago (USA) crank out some great books on political philosophy etc. Although, some of them are out of print. Alibris will get them for ya!

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2007-07-18

This book provides an introduction to the ecology of northeastern bogs. Johnson, the Vermont state naturalist, has a particular affinity for bogs and the unique flora and fauna found in them. In this book, he explains the different types of bogs, how they are formed, and what forms of life are typical in and around them. After a general introduction to the ecology of bogs, he provides separate chapters for sphagnum mosses, carnivorous plants, orchids, sedges and heaths, insects, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds, and mammals. He also discusses some current issues concerning bogs, such as peat mining and conservation. End material includes an annotated list of northeastern bogs with public access, and checklists of bog birds and other animals. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photographs, drawings, and maps and includes an index.

As a beginning naturalist, I found the book highly informative. I found Johnson's explanations of how bogs are formed to be extremely interesting because of the implications for bog ecology. The text is written for general readers and assumes no specialist expertise, yet it is detailed enough to be useful for experienced naturalists or professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Bogs of the Northeast.......2005-08-05

The book is well written and very interesting. The chapters are loaded with information but and is easy reading.

                            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2002-03-26

I bought Bogs of the Northeast because I grow carnivorous plants (CP) and am always interested in learning about one of their more common natural habitats. I was not disappointed; it includes a section on CP with some satiating color photos. Also included are an explanation of how bogs are formed, discussion of bog types, descriptions of plant and animal species found in bogs, a section devoted to Sphagnum moss (helpful to me as a CP grower), a section on native terrestrial orchids, etc. In the back there is a listing of easily accessible bogs in the Northeast.

Keep in mind that this book covers only bogs in the New England region of the United States. Fortunately, bogs similar to those described can be found throughout North America.

I have but one gripe: there are not many color photographs! Those included, however, are beautiful and I wish there were more.

All in all, it is a wonderful book for those who want to learn more about bogs!

Edit: As to my use of 'satiating' to describe this book's color photos...it is admittedly a slight exaggeration. 'Good' or 'nice' or 'detailed' would have been more appropriate. In case you don't know, 'satiating' means 'satisfying in excess'. For example, a meal that gives you a tummy ache would be satiating--that is, satisfying in excess. So, would 'satisfying' have perhaps been a better choice? No, because as my review later indicates, the photos are not at all satisfying. In fact, the book could have been improved considerably with a lot more (or, come to think of it, improved slightly with a few more). Then why did I use 'satiating'? Why do I not change it now? Because 'satiating' is the only thing this sad review has going for it.

5 out of 5 stars For the best bike routes on Cape Cod, this is the book........2000-04-17

Cape Cod is perhaps one of the best places to bike in New England. The rolling hills, the stunning views of the Atlantic and the jewel-like kettle-hole ponds in its interior sections make it a bicicyclists paradise. During 2 weeks in late springs several years ago, I used the bike routes in this book alone to make my way from the upper Cape near Sandwich down to the Outer Cape into Truro and Provincetown. I was not disappointed. The maps in combination with written directions offer just enough detail so that riders are always on the right track. And vista after vista was exactly what this rider was hoping for. The routes in this book helped me to come away with an intimate knowledge of Cape Cod and too many fond memories to count. It's obvious that the folks who wrote this book rode these routes time and time again, perfecting them and finally compiling them into this incredible guide to the most stunning bike routes on Cape Cod. If you want to get to know Cape Cod better, or if you're just looking for a variety of top-notch biking experiences in Eastern Massachusetts, this is the place and this is the book!
