    Book Description

Whether in felling trees for wood, rearing insects for biological control, or culling animals for conservation purposes, efficient management of biological systems requires quantitative analysis of population growth and harvesting policies. Aiming to encourage the exchange of ideas among scientists involved in the management of fisheries, wildlife, forest stands, and pest control, the authors of this work present a general framework for modeling populations that reproduce seasonally and that have age or stage structure as an essential component of management strategy.

The book represents the first time that examples from such diverse areas of biological resource management have been brought together in a unified modeling framework using the standard notation of mathematical systems theory. In addition, the authors combine a nonlinear extension of Leslie matrix theory and certain linear elements, thereby permitting interesting analytical results and the creation of compact, realistic simulation models of resource systems.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guidebook, Now in an Updated Version.......2006-04-16

The new (2005)edition of this guide brings the story up to 2004 and contains ample documentation regarding the struggling new democracy of Afghanistan. The writing is rich in colorful, touching, scary, revealing details that tend to get filtered out of official and semi-official reports. I found the discussions of deforestation, landmines, and security particularly helpful. Written from a European perspective, the book provides many useful suggestions for travel in Afghanistan that usefully complement advice from American sources.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Afghanistan.......2004-04-29

This is an excellent guide to Afghanistan. Both for the expert and the newcomer. Given the current security situation in Afghanistan, I would recommend the Essential Field Guide as a must to all US and Coalition soldiers and peacekeepers. It could save their lives and US policy.

The guide provides exactly the sort of quick understanding with excellent overviews and infobriefs on culture, economies, health, environment, ethnic groups etc. that would prove more than useful through a more thorough understanding of this country and its people. Edward Girardet, who has written for the Christian Science Monitor and National Geographic, is also one of the top experts on the country since first reporting it at the beginning of the Soviet invasion. Apart from its information, the guide is simply a joy - and incredibly interesting - to read. Anyone serious about Afghanistan - aid worker, journalist, diplomat, academic, traveller, human rights advocate...should have a copy if not in their pocket then certainly on their bookshelves. Political science and journalism students should also study this as a must. It beats most other books on Afghanistan. Girardet and Walter and the Crosslines publishers should definitely do other books on humanitarian and conflict zones elsewhere. If they can do the same for Africa or the Middle East as they have with Afghanistan, they are doing an incredible service to all concerned.

5 out of 5 stars Afghanistan fieldguide tells the full story.......2001-10-25

Crosslines Essential Field Guide to Afghanistan tells the full story about Afghanistan in a way I can't find in any other book. Whether it's politics, culture or humanitarian information you're after - it's all in there. I never realised how big those Buddhas were that the Taliban blew up until I saw a picture in this book! If you want to understand more about the country at the centre of world news, this is the book to buy!

The Crosslines Essential Field Guide to AFGHANISTAN Is the only detailed guidebook dealing with the current situation of the country available in English. Journalists and relief workers from the BBC, TIME, UNHCR, UNICEF and other media or aid groups have already informed us that the Essential Guide to AFGHANISTAN is the best thing going for quick and informed background information.

The book features over 500 pages of political, humanitarian and military analysis, biographies of key Taliban and opposition players, essential information briefs on agriculture, medical relief, environment, culture etc. as well as all regions of the country, street maps, advice on health and security, phrasebooks in Persian and Pashto, contact details for diplomats, aid agencies and journalists. Specially commissioned essays written leading experts analyse the country's political, military, humanitarian, and cultural situation. All country data was collated through first hand field research the editors.

The editors are Edward Girardet (a journalist and former correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor; also author of Afghanistan - the Soviet War) and Jonathan Walter (a former officer with the British Army's Brigade of Gurkhas, and editor of the World Disasters Report)

This new edition of a classic tells teens how to understand their highs, lows, and problems in life, from parents to peers. The new and expanded 6th edition provides a how-to and why-to which provides a sympathetic overview of growing into an adult's body and world. Teenage Survival Manual includes sections for notes, which may not make this appropriate for library lending, but parents and teens alike will relish its wisdom.

As a parent I appreciated the Reality I and II labels given. The writer conveys his message in not only a teeage friendly manner, but effective for this adult reader. He doesn't become preachy but his stance is well put.

I encourage anyone who struggles with "life" to sit down with this book. It has already helped my relationship with my 18 year old.

As a teacher of preteens I am appreciative of the insight Coombs gives.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A074914. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Optimization of patient care is one goal of anesthesia providers. With individualized care nurse anesthetists can achieve high degrees of patient satisfaction, reduce overall costs and improve patient outcomes. One concern for the anesthesia provider is the differing responses to pharmacological interventions between patients, especially between genders. In the past, research in the area of gender differences was hindered due to Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. Female subjects of childbearing years were excluded from participating in Phase I and early Phase II pharmacological clinical trials (Merkatz, Temple, Sobel, Feiden, & Kessler, 1993). In 1993, the FDA became aware of the need to include females in bioequivalence studies and released new guidelines regarding this (Chen et al., 2000). Following the release of these guidelines, research in the area of gender differences began to progress.

                                        Book Description

The efficiency of computational methods and the choice of the most efficient methods for solving a specific problem or a specific class of problems have always played an important role in numerical analysis. Optimization of the computerized solution process is now a major problem of applied mathematics, which stimulates the search for new computational methods and ways to implement them.
In Minimax Models in the Theory of Numerical Methods, methods for estimating the efficiency of computational algorithms and problems of their optimality are studied within the framework of a general computation model.
The subjects dealt with in this important book are very different from the traditional subjects of computational methods. Close attention is paid to adaptive (sequential) computational algorithms, the process of computation being regarded as a controlled process and the algorithm as a control strategy. This approach allows methods of game theory and othermethods of operations research and systems analysis to be widely used for constructing optimal algorithms. The goal underlying the study of the various computation models dealt with in this title is the construction of concrete numerical algorithms admitting program implementation. The central role belongs to the concept of a sequentially optimal algorithm, which in many cases reflects the characteristics of real-life computational processes more fully than the traditional optimality concepts.

I am impressed with the reviews on this site because they are so deservedly glowing. I read this book when I was an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and was amazed at the creative genius this man had, as well as the destructive power of critical dismissal. Given, he may not have written the most perfectly structured novel in history, but give the guy a break. He was a professional author from a time when, even if you were a best seller, it only paid just enough to get by. He had to hurry his output to keep up with his grumbling stomach. However, as far as pure entertainment value, and heart stopping plot twists he is second to none. This man should definitely be read more and given more credit as the grand-father of gothic writing. Given, he is nowhere near Poe, but who is? He is far ahead of his time (late 18th century) in psychological exploration and X-files-esque ponderings. If you want a book that will entertain, frighten, and shock you look no further. I also highly recommended Memoirs of a Sleepwalker if you liked this novel and are looking for something along the same lines.

5 out of 5 stars Disrupting the Empire of Rationality.......2000-10-26

Charles Brockden Brown's first novel, 1798's "Wieland," is an outstanding, riveting work fraught with anxieties over the new American nation and its enlightened foundations. Set sometime between 1763 and 1775, "Wieland" is narrated by Clara Wieland, and concerns the fate of her family and friends - her brother Theodore, and their friends Pleyel and Catharine. Clara is a woman born and raised into a secure world of enlightenment rationality. She is a model of Wollstonecraftian feminism - educated, astute, and benevolent.

Clara's narrative begins with a recitation of her family history - her Anglo-German roots and an account of the family's migration to the American colonies, to wit, Pennsylvania. Following an account of her father's religious enthusiasm and apparent spontaneous combustion, Clara shows herself and her brother, who equally partition the family estate, living in perfectly rational harmony. The estate of Mettingen is an enlightened utopia, where the Wielands and the Pleyels discuss literature and virtue, completely oblivious to the outside world. Though Philadelphia is not far away, the concerns of the city, of commerce, and of politics are not theirs.

Their ordered world is soon upset by the manifestation of mysterious disembodied voices around the estate. Shortly thereafter, Carwin, a rustic stranger with remarkable intelligence and a shrouded past, enters their isolated society.

In "Wieland," Brown calls into question the enlightened basis of the still new American government. With fresh knowledge of the failure of the French Revolution, subsequent uprisings in Ireland, and an intense fascination with the radical political philosophies of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, "Wieland" powerfully engages and synthesizes the currents of its time. With all the trappings of psychological gothic trauma, Brown, a resident of a nation conceived in liberty, asks whether the ideological break between a rational new world and a traditional, superstitious old world actually changes anything in human nature.

3 out of 5 stars A Great Author, But Only A Good Book.......2000-01-04

I liked the book, don't get me wrong, but it simply is not all that good of a book. It's importance as a groundbreaker in American Gothic is a very large one, but I feel that the book will be lost on the every day readers, who will be put off by both the language and the rather silly way in which it ends. The whole book is a build up of mystery and then out of the shadows the criminal steps forward and gives a speech (a long one I might add) on how the whole thing happened. So long as you accept the fact that this will happen at the end, you should like it, but if not, then stay away. The book is quite a let down (I just can't stand the ending), especially for being Brown's best read novel. If you want to read the book (and it really is a good book), just stop before the last chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Wieland, questions in early America (and still today!).......1997-03-06

Wieland is an excellent response to the questions of post-revolutionary America. It raises question of religious fanatacism, reason as religion, and representative government in the context of a gothic inspired novel. Set where the Delaware meets the Schuylkill (my hometown of Philadelphia) Brown provides the perfect representation of many of the question that were faced in his day

                                        1 out of 5 stars Wieland.......2001-03-14

I was required to read this novel for an American Ficiton class in college. Most students would rate required reading very low just because it is required reading. Wieland has a low rating because it deserves it, not only because it was required. As an English major I love to read but Wieland tests any readers ability and patience. Brown's writing style is comparable to James Fenimore Cooper's Deerslayer - extremely descriptive and at times, without a difinitive end. The many themes that are found in the novel are outdated to today's readers and will have little if any effect on the interest of the novel. The grotesque theme of familial murder mimicks the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. If you are a Poe fan, Wieland may interest you. For those that are not Poe or Cooper fans, I would suggest looking for reading elsewhere. Wieland is time consuming and not worth the trouble.

One of the earliest American novels, Wieland (1798) is a tale of suspense and intrigue that explores some of the most important issues vital to the survival of democracy in the new American republic.

4 out of 5 stars the early beginnings of american literature.......2001-01-01

Having to rate a book like this is no easy task. I give it four stars as a sort of average. The edition itself, with a solid introduction by Emory Eliot, is very good. The novel, like all of Brown's works, is a somewhat unsatisfying effort.

That said, let me add quickly that this novel is a must-read, without a doubt. This truly Gothic tale will keep you in suspence from start to finish--and guess what, Brown even claims a historical precedent for the narrator's brother slaughtering his wife and children. This is Real TV!

It is not a great novel (although superior to, for instance, "Edgar Huntly" and "Stephen Calvert") but it is a fascinating one. Brown was quick to jump on the bandwagon of female fiction that proved to be the bestseller in 19th century America, and this semi-epistolary tale by a female narrator is fascinating if only for the problems its form poses. For instance, its epistolary character, meant to create a sense of urgency and directness, never convinces due to its pretentious literate (read, latinate) diction and syntax. Moreover, Brown's choice of a female narrator--a man writing like a woman writing like a man--, while marketable in 1798, shows that he always bites off much more than he can chew. A much better (and earlier, 1797!) example of a female epistolary novel is Hannah W. Foster's "The Coquette," available in a wonderful edition also by the Oxford UP.

Unlike what some would have you believe, Brown is not the earliest American novelist. It is interesting to note that some of his fans claim Brown instead of Cooper, completely forgetting the books put out by female authors and read mainly by women. I might add that Brown had a male predecessor also, a namesake, William Hill Brown ("The Power of Sympathy," 1789): one shouldn't try to simplify the history of early American literature. However, to come to grips with American literature, and especially its love for the Gothic (mystery, murder, incest), "Wieland" is a great start, and this is a very good edition.
