A Good Start.......2000-05-07

I just came back from a trip to Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador and this book was a very good way to prepare myself to it before going. Its sugestions for equipment and what you really need to carry or not with you were great. But once I got there, some problems start to happen: like incorrect or missing info about remote parts of Ecuador, cordillera Blanca in Peru or cordillera Real in Bolivia.It gave me the impression that they are really at the beggining of their explorations, but I am sure that the following updated editions are going to be really good, since they have some nice background information about the history, culture and tourist sights of each country. Although they are not 100% either, you can trust in Peru and Bolivia: Backpacking and Trekking or Climbing and Hiking in Ecuador, both from Bradt Books. But your best choice is really to buy the Lonely Planet guides for each of these countries, since they are the most reliable in the market today.

Without a doubt, he's the coolest cat out there in comics. With his crazy insane appetite, his total love for Odie (kidding) and attacking the mailman on a regular basis. This is one that wont disappoint, but again this is Garfield so its hard to do that anyways. Love having 3 books together in one pack, it just goes to show. A Nasty, yet Realistic, Protagonist.......2007-02-10

Lara's life is perfect. She has everything going for her: she is one of the most popular girls in school, she is beautiful, she has a wonderful boyfriend and her family is great. Even though she is in high school, her father still calls her his princess and tells her all the time how beautiful she is. Her mother is thin and beautiful, too, and supports Lara as she enters and wins beauty pageants.

The best night of Lara's life is the night she wins the title of Homecoming Queen as a junior. She has officially been voted by her peers the most beautiful and the most popular girl in school. The only thing that makes this night slightly less than perfect is the fact that she tries to help Patty, the fattest girl in school, by offering to exercise with her to help her lose weight. Patty insults her and rejects her offer. Lara thinks to herself that Patty, like all fat people, is just too lazy to make any effort to lose the weight.

Soon after homecoming, something awful begins to happen to Lara. She starts to gain weight. At first it's just a few pounds she thinks she can diet and exercise off. But then it's more and more. The more Lara diets and exercises, the more weight she gains. Her mother and father don't believe she is trying to lose the weight. Her father tells her she needs to have more willpower, and he stops calling her princess. Lara's popularity is disappearing fast, and she can't do anything about it. How will she adjust to her new life as a fat girl?

I liked the honest treatment of Lara toward the end of the book, when she has gained a bunch of weight. The author didn't romanticize or try to make it seem like things were still the same for Lara. Her entire life and all of her happiness was wrapped up in being pretty, so it was reasonable to me that she would struggle a great deal to redefine herself. Although I didn't like the character of Lara, I thought the way she reacted was the way most teens in her situation would. Just because she gained weight, it wouldn't necessarily mean she equated herself with others who were overweight. A prejudice as deep as hers and as accepted in society as hers, would take a great deal of time to dissipate. It would have seemed unrealistic to me if Lara's perceptions of beauty and worth were radically changed by the end of the book.

I Read It Three Times.......2006-12-30

I juat loved this book so much, maybe because I am a girl likw Lara who isn't always perfect and who definitely has had to deal with some changes to my body that I had nothing to do with. My parents are very tall, and when I turned thirteen at the beginning of last year I just started to grow and grow. I don't think that the author wants everyone to feel sorry for Lara, or even to like her all the time. There were definitely times she was a jerk and mean, and definitely times she felt sorry for herself. But reading this book made me grow a lot, and I think it will do the same for any girl. It is a hard book to put down, and I got new stuff from it each time I read it. At the end of the book Lara has an important understanding, and her having this understanding helped me to understand life better, too. This is a great book.

Vicki's receipes are easy, quick, and delicious! I am constantly referring to the receipes in this book and the ones in her first book. All of the receipes are wonderful and I have tried almost all of them. She provides the very tastiest diet cooking I know of and I have tried them all!!Don't hesitate to get this and her 1st book if you want to diet and not feel like you're missing anything. It is definitely slanted towards Southern cooking which to me is the most delicious. If I can diet and eat my cornbread, I'm there.. But I can't imagine anyone who would not like these tasty dishes.

I think this book is another winner for Vicki Park. I am learning how to cook healthy after 36 years of marriage and my husband and I both are losing weight and feeling better. This compares to her first book Live, Don't Diet. The recipes are simple, but very delicious. This book and Vicki Parks' other book Live, Don't Diet are the best low fat cook books I have seen and I have bought a lot of them. When you get a recipe done, it tastes like real food and not like cardboard like other low fat cookbooks I have tried.

Living in Switzerland I found the book hopeless. The recipes ask you to go to the store and buy fat-free products and ready prepared food. I was hoping that the recipes would work with raw materials and provide me with healthy meals, but I was sadly let down.

A Reprint of a Classic.......2004-09-05

This is a corrected version of one of the real classics in the multigrid field. Its first publisher allowed the price to skyrocket to the point that it still stands today as the most expensive multigrid book I own. The reprint is over $100 USD less than what I paid for my copy.

The book is completely self contained. It has one of nicest descriptions of finite volume methods in it that I know of. It covers all of the basic multigrid concepts in detail, both algorithmically and theoretically. It covers a lot more than basics as well.

While it was between regular publishers the author gratiously allowed a scanned copy to be downloaded from the multigrid community web site http://www.mgnet.org. It was one of the most downloaded items while it was there. (As an aside, it is no longer available on the web.)

While not the most recent multigrid book, it still is one of the best. The price, considering it is a hardback, is also very competitive.

I highly recommend this book, particularly for students who have not studied in depth numerical methods for solving partial differential equation.

A gripping, short story of the human condition.......2004-01-22

This novelette, originally published in 1774, established Goethe as a German literary superstar.

The story features Werther, a middle-class artist, who falls in love with Lotte, who is engaged to Albert. Although Lotte loves him in return, she remains faithful to her fiancee. Since he cannot have Lotte, Werther decides to commit suicide.

This book was radically different from the earlier books of the German Enlightenment. The Sturm und Drang group wished to publish more middle-class works and 'Werther' is an example of that. Werther is a very emotional man; he wears his heart on his sleeve. Some readers may say that Werther is a whiner, but that is not the point. All of Werther's emotions are extreme; he takes complete delight in admiring the countryside and falls into deep depression when his love remains unsatisfied. As his depression increases, his grasp of language becomes more and more eratic.

Goethe also constructed Werther as a semi-autobiographical character. Goethe had also fallen in love with a married woman who could not return his love. One month after she left him, Goethe heard of an acquaintance that had committed suicide due to a similar situation.

Goethe comes just before the Romantic movement in Germany. One Romantic ideal was that the artist, or man in general, due to his position as a human, can never be perfect and must always fail. Romantics were obsessed with death, and especially sick people (like Beethoven), because death, supposedly, finally united Man with the Infinite, or Devine Perfection. I think Werther loved Lotte so much, because he saw something within her; one can call it the Infinite, the Devine or the Ideal. Since Werther could not experience the Infinite through Lotte, he decided to reach the Infinite through death.

Goethe, perhaps, wrote this work to put his life into perspective. He could have very easily taken Werther's path, but he, obviously, decided that his life was still worth living.

Goethe would continue this idea of Man seeking the Infinite, or Perfection, in his great opus, Faust, which I recommend to all readers. The difference between Faust and Werther is that Faust did not commit suicide but was redeemed in death. Werther's death and funeral does not have as much pageantry. The last line in Werther is: 'No clergymen escorted him.'

I have included all the information above because I feel that an understanding of Sturm und Drang and Goethe's situation leads to a greater appreciation of 'Werther.' Otherwise, one might interpret Werther as a hopeless, pathetic whiner. But he is quite possibly like all human beings; he suffers because he experiences very human emotions.

Nice but sad.......2003-10-29

As far as I understood the inspiration for this book comes from two of Goethe's friends - Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem who shot and killed himself after he borrowed the gun from J.C.Krestner. This tragedy made a profound impression on Goethe.
As soon as this book was published, it enjoyed huge popularity and it was translated into numerous languages. It was the first German book of this kind and even Napoleon Bonaparte read this book up to seven times.
The Sufferings of young Werther is a psychologic and a very tragic tale of a young man who falls in love hopelessly with a married woman. Werther proves to be very intellegent and smart but chosing what he chose to do made him indeed very stupid after all.
Of course in order to find out what Werther did, and how the story unfolds - you'll have to read the book yourself but if you listen to my advice don't read it if you're in love with someone and you're single as Werther was because it wouldn't be a wise thing to do. At least that's my opinion (concern). Cheers.

I wanted to like this book..........2003-09-05

But I didn't. Widely considered a literary classic, I honestly didn't get what the fuss was about.

Granted, Goethe is a man of towering genius; his understanding of human nature is very much in evidence here. However, reading the book, I feel it is very much a product of its time. The narrative format (letters written by the protagonist) as well as the excessive sentimentality, were products of the "Age of Sentimentality" that swept through much of Europe during the latter half of the 18th-century. One's take on the book, therefore, correlates highly with how one reacts to the features of this period. The constant snivelling and braying that occurs throughout the book is unendurable, and the unlikeliness of the events is compounded by the artifice of the narration itself (the epistolary novel). However, because, it's Goethe writing, there is the occasional timeless observation ("When we feel inadequate to ourselves, everything seems inadequate to us") that only Goethe can put into words. Its moments such as those that salvage an otherwise uninteresting read.

As is common with Norton editions, the text is packed with useful annotations, biographical notes, and critical studies. The translation is also good, maintaining the tenor of Goethe's words but updating them for modern ears.

Since this text was a crucial contributor to the "sturm und drang" (storm and stress) movement, one perhaps would be best served by appreciating the historical value of the text, and discounting its "factual content" (to steal from Benjamin). Otherwise, I fear one might run into the same problems I did.

A "MUST" in order to understand romanticism.......2003-04-02

This book is an absolute must for anybody who wants to understand the spirit of the romantic era and the "Sturm und Drang" time. The feelings and emotions are driven to their limits, what lies in all of us is expressed unrestrictedly. The translator does NOT use the old English style (which some other translators inappropriately do), so he sucessfully comes very close to the German original.
Read it! You may discover how human you are!

excellent novel, gives new perspective on love and death........2000-01-27

a suicide and the love that precludes, defines, and concludes the life of a man. it's hard to describe a book of this magnitude, as it's likely that everyone who reads it will release different thoughts and emotions. definitely a human novel.
