      Book Description

This book constitutes a unique, encyclopedic reference work that systematizes and categorizes for the first time in such comprehensive fashion all known fern spores. The dominant feature of the work are the over 350 plates of electron micrographs showing the morphological characteristics of typical representatives of each spore type. The purpose of the book is to provide a complete survey of the available data on the fine structure and composition, development, and evolu- tionary significance of different types of spore walls, which have proven resistant to fossilization throughout geological ages. The classification system developed by the authors as the result of many years of research will be a point of reference, if not the systematic basis, for all future publication on the subject. The book will be of great interest to all botanists and evolutionary biologists working with spores and/or ferns, but it will also be of major importance to paleobotanists, palynologists, stratigraphers, and exploration geologists, since the focus of this treatise is on spores as highly adapted and longlived reproductive forms.

5 out of 5 stars The Global Experience.......2003-09-17

In a world where we are all interconnected by technology, itis so important to expand our experience of the world. I read these stories with such interest and became aware of a unique perspective on a different cultural experience. I am an adult and read these stores with fascination before reading them to my daughter. Three cheers for this book and an editor who brought these experiences, past and present, together.

5 out of 5 stars A much needed anthology for adolescents as well as adults.......2003-09-16

These twenty nine stories give us a much needed look into the multi-faceted journey of Filipino youth coming of age in this society. These tales are full of humor, fear, sadness and love of family and their culture. Over the course of time in the development of this country we have heard from diverse immigrant groups about their struggles to find a sense of belonging here. It is time to hear the voice of the Filipino community. I think this would be an ideal book for teachers to introduce to all their students.

        5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2003-09-04

I read this book to my grandson and realized the emotions stemming from difficult times and family matters are universal. There are so many diverse races in today's classrooms. This book helped him see beyond his own little corner of the world. I highly recommend it.

Emerging and established award-winning writers are the authors of this fine collection of 29 stories about what it means to be young and Filipino in the Philippines and in the United States. Filipinos in America are now the second largest in the umbrella group of Asian Americans, yet there is a scarcity of books by and for Filipinos. This impressive array captures the complexities of both the Filipino culture and history and the realities of the lives of young adults no matter what their ethnic affiliation. Each story is assigned to one of five universal themes: family, angst, friendship, love, and home. (by Glenna Sloan)

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW BY BOOKLIST 4/15/2003.......2003-08-14

In this fine short-story collection, 29 Filipino American writers explore the universal challenges of adolescence from the unique perspectives of teens in the Philippines or the U.S. Organized into 5 sections - Family, Angst, Friendship, Love, and Home - all the stories are about growing up and what the introduction calls "growing into Filipino-ness, growing with Filipinos, and growing in or growing away from the Philippines." The stories are introduced by the authors, who illustrate the teenage experience as they remember it or as they wish to explain it to the reader - whether the focus is the death of a grandparent, budding sexuality, or going to the mall. The cultural flavor aspect never overwhelms the stories, and readers will be drawn to the particulars as well as the universal concerns of family, friends, love, and leaving home. While the stories are fairly easy to read, teens might be intimidated by the dense book design and small type. Take the time to help them overcome this. The stories are delightful!

          Book Description

The past fifty years have witnessed major achievements in ecological physiology, the study of physiological adaptations that improve survival or permit organisms to exploit extreme environments. New Directions in Ecological Physiology outlines novel conceptual approaches to the study of physiological adaptation in animals, approaches that will stimulate the continued growth of this field. Twenty leading ecological physiologists and evolutionary biologists have contributed critical evaluations of developments in their respective areas, highlighting major conceptual advances as well as research questions yet to be answered. The volume is organized into three parts: The first deals with comparisons of different species and populations; the second, with comparisons of individuals within a population; the last, with interacting physiological systems within individual animals. New Directions in Ecological Physiology, by encouraging critical debate about general issues and directions of growth in this field, is intended to foster the invigoration of ecological physiology in particular and of organismal biology in general.

                  Book Description

The boundary element method (BEM) is a powerful tool for the numerical study of engineering and physics problems. It is often considered more mathematical and difficult to comprehend than the finite element method with which it can be compared. This book dispels that myth and shows the
method's great power and utility. An introductory chapter contains the preliminary mathematics required to understand later chapters making the book self-contained. For both classes of problems (potential and elasticity), chapters cover the boundary integral formulation of the problem, previously
presented in differential form; the numerical solution of this integral formulation; and the implementation of this numerical approach in computer code. The book teaches the fundamentals of the method for the beginner and at the same time enables them to acquire a clear idea of its applicability.
Exercises and a disk with codes and examples (Mac and PC) are enclosed. This makes it suitable as a text for graduate courses on BEM taught to engineers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars A complete introduction to BEM.......2002-09-01

This book covers all the basic (and simplest) applications of BEM, i.e. 2-D potential and 2-D elastostatics in a comprehensive way, both form the analytical and the numerical point of view. Although its dense writting can be tiresome in certain cases for the reader, this is overcome if one tries to solve some basic simple problems, writting code in his own PC (e.g. torsion oc circular cross-section), along with studying. Anyway, BE method is not so easy to grasp and comprehend quickly, so it needs some time. Of the very positive features of the book is the section which covers discontinuous linear elements, for by these one can solve the Dirichlet problem for naturally-non-smooth boundaries, avoiding gradient approximation and the disk which accompanies the book (Fortran code for 2-D potential problems and 2-D elastostatics).

                  4 out of 5 stars A nice book but not a masterpiece.......2002-03-28

If you are a total beginner with the method and feel unconfortable with densly written text, then you may have difficulties reading the book.
It would have been much better if the book had the same content with a little bit more space between paragraphs. If you read a lot you can understand what I am saying.
On the other hand to be fair the book covers the method very well dealing with all the important parts of the method.
The book only covers the fundamentals of the method and nothing more so don't expect to read about treatment of elastodynamic problems, nonlinear problems and other advanced stuff.
Boundary element method introductory texts are not many, and this one is surely the best yet. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners.......2001-08-16

The basic concepts and the fundamentals are clearly explained in this book. This book devotes entirely on 2D potential and 2D elasticity problems. It has a good number of interesting examples which also includes problems with discontinuous boundary conditions (normally not available in other textbooks). The results are well detailed, well-explained and compared with reference solutions. These examples will be very helpful for beginners. This book shows formulations using discontinuous singular elements. The diskette with the computer codes are a big plus.

As described in the summary, this is a good short (250pp) volume that discusses the rise and fall of the Dutch Navy during the indicated period. It is not a detailed military history nor a reference to the vessels and facilities that comprised the Dutch Navy, as I had hoped. For those interested in the Age of Sail at a high level, I can recommend this book as it does provide insight into the problems faced by the United Provinces and the attempted solutions, as well as excellent coverage of the makeup of the crew, cadre and administration. But if you expect this book to be a technical reference to the Dutch Navy, you will be disappointed.

                  Book Description

The Nether World (1889), generally regarded as the finest of Gissing's early novels, is a highly dramatic, sometimes violent tale of man's caustic vision shaped by the bitter personal experience of poverty. This tale of intrigue depicts life among the artisans, factory-girls, and
slum-dwellers, documenting an inescapable world devoid of sentimentality and steeped with people scheming and struggling to survive. With Zolaesque intensity and relentlessness, Gissing lays bare the economic forces which determine the aspirations and expectations of those born to a life of
                  labor.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another True Glimpse at Victorian Times.......2004-05-23

In "The Nether World," Gissing gives you another one of his hard, realistic looks at life in London in Victorian times. This time he focuses on the poorest of the poor in the Clerkenwell area of London. These are people whom England's infantile labor laws generally can't help. If/When they can find work, they often work 16 hours per day all week, and the wages they earn hardly cover rent for a very small room in disreputable housing. It's a world where unwanted children multiply like rabbits, and the death of any family member is usually seen as a relief of one less mouth to feed.

For all these reasons, this world - this nether world - is a world about which the upper and middle classes are happily ignorant. Those born into these lowest levels of humanity often rail about the injustice of being born into such circumstances. However, their cries for social reform, their desperate attempts to better themselves, and their pitiful needs for simple pennies are never really heard or understood by those more comfortably off.

Within this novel, then, Gissing explores the lives of a range of characters as they deal with being born in the nether world. While he focuses on the heart-warming characters of Jane Snowdon and Sidney Kirkwood, Gissing competently develops the storyline of a large number of other Clerkenwell characters whose lives intertwine with Jane's and Sidney's. In his distinct manner, Gissing is mercilessly honest and yet generally compassionate with the characters whose lives he examines. Thus, he offers a glimpse of the slums - full of love, ambition, corruption, greed, and despair - in a manner that many of us would never know otherwise.

Many compare or try to compare this kind of honest look at the rougher side of London with Dickens. However, it is important to note that Dickens tended to idealize poverty and always brought things to a hopeful, positive ending. Gissing does no such thing. Though an educated man, Gissing himself suffered cruelly from poverty and mixed with these classes as he struggled to support himself as an author (see "New Grub Street"). Thus, he has no idealist views of poverty and simplistic lives.

Additionally, Gissing has a penchant for realistic storylines. It is unnerving to read his books, actually, because you can't rest on the fact that he will work everything out nicely in the end. In fact, he usually doesn't. He is courageous enough to write true-to-life outcomes to very frustrating, dispiriting circumstances. It is probably why he never became a popular author as readers often want happy endings - with a Ghost of Christmas Past if necessary - in order to relieve their consciences.

All in all, another great work by Gissing. He does get a bit preachy (even as he reveals the preachiness of others as futile), but that is easily overlooked. The accurate historical glimpse of London that he gives is invaluable. And I imagine that his brutally honest portrayal of life might speak to the impoverished among us today

3 out of 5 stars Typical Depressing times.......2000-05-26

I read this book for a class. I found it interesting, but it is certainly not one I would pick for a little weekend reading. It is very heavy, and depressing -- which is very typical of the British Victorian Era (when discussing the working class). It traces the lives of a number of working class people and their trials. Being that life for them was not a very optomistic place it is easy to understand why this book is rather dark. It took a while to get into, but once into it I did enjoy it. (as much as possible).

I'm not commenting on the novel itself here (although it is an interesting, if problematic, look at London's underworld), but I do want to warn readers against buying this Echo Library edition. There is no contextual material (no intro, afterword, or notes), which would have been useful, but more annoying is the fact that the copy editor for this press appears to have been asleep while editing this edition. There are three or four major typos on every page (glaring typos-- periods in the middle of words, apostrophes instead of commas, mispelled words). Sometimes there are even words missing, which makes the prose difficult to follow. This novel is worth reading, but try to find a different edition.

                        Book Description

In the social classification of the nether world -- a subject which so eminently adapts itself to the sportive and gracefully picturesque mode of treatment -- it will be convenient to distinguish broadly, and with reference to males alone, the two great sections of those who do, and those who do not, wear collars. Each of these orders would, it is obvious, offer much scope to an analyst delighting in subtle gradation. Taking the collarless, bow shrewdly might one discriminate between the many kinds of neckcloth which our climate renders necessary as a substitute for the nobler article of attire!

                                Book Description

George Gissing was an English novelist, who wrote twenty-three novels between 1880 and 1903. Although his early works are naturalistic, he developed into one of the the most accomplished realists of the late-Victorian era. Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, to lower-middle class parents, Gissing went on to win a scholarship to Owens College, the present day University of Manchester. A brilliant student, he excelled at university, winning many coveted prizes, including the Shakespeare prize in 1875. Between 1891 and 1897 (his so-called middle period) he produced his best works, which include New Grub Street, Born in Exile, The Odd Women, In the Year of Jubilee, and The Whirlpool. The middle years of the decade saw his reputation reach new heights: by some critics he is counted alongside George Meredith and Thomas Hardy as one of the best three novelists of his day. He also enjoyed new friendships with fellow writers such as Henry James, and H.G. Wells, and came into contact with many other up and coming writers such as Joseph Conrad and Stephen Crane.
