Help Along the Way of Liberty.......2004-04-18

Mike Tolhurst's father fought in the battle for Normandy. Perhaps that is why the narrative portion of this book reads with such emotion, not just military matter-of-factness. This book would succeed, I believe, simply as an account of this part of the war, even without the "travel guide" aspects. Eyewitness accounts and quotes from German as well as Allied soldiers bring what was happening to life.

I had already decided to go to Normandy when I purchased this book. But it was invaluable in helping me decide which places to see, since I knew my time would be limited. Each chapter consists of a narrative of part of the battle, then an accompanying suggested tour which touches on cities and places mentioned in that chapter. I ended up not following the plans exactly, but still basing my choices of places to go on the authors' narratives.

I found Normandy to be beautiful and welcoming, and would recommend that every American, Canadian and UK native visit these sites if you can, most especially if a relative fought in the war. If you do you'll need some guidance as to what to see and where it is, and this book will help a great deal.

This is a great guide to take with you on a trip to Normandy. I carried it with me throughout my tours and was able to read aloud about the events that took place-standing on Omaha Beach and reading about the various divisions that struggled where I stood was of great value to myself and my husband.

The eyewitness accounts bring it to life as well.

If you plan on touring the D Day beaches and sites, bring this one with you!

Fascinating read.......2000-06-15

What makes this book stand out for me is the eyewitness reports, which are dotted throughout as you read this account of the D-Day landings. They bring alive the personal experiences of those who fought and help the reader appreciate the scarifices made.

The book is a nice mix of the history of this particular military campaign, and what the traveller to Normandy can hope to see today. This means the book is a good read for either the armchair military buff or the interested tourist.

Lots of photos and clear maps also add to this very good and highly readable book.

"Inside the walls of troy" is great book that I really enjoyed. Anyone who is interested in ancient Greece/Troy will also enjoy this book, though it will most likely appeal more to girls. it is about how the Trojan war and how it began and ended. For a refreshing change, however, "Inside the Walls of Troy" is told from the point of view of First Helen and then Cassandra. Helen is the queen of Sparta and the most beautiful woman in the world, but Aphrodite is playing tricks on her. Cassandra is a princess of Troy who has visions of the future. This is the WOMEN'S story of what happened inside the walls of Toy.

I personally think that "Inside the Walls of Troy" is a great book. It is generally meant to be read by girls. If you are interested in what was happening around the Greek era this is a great book for you. If you are also interested in what women have done to contribute in our history this is also a good book for you.
"Inside the Walls of Troy" gives two women perspectives. The first half of the book is in the perspective of Helen Queen of Sparta. The second half of the book is in Princess Cassandra of Troy's perspective. This book is all about what was happening inside the walls of Troy during the Trojan War. This is a great book for people who are just starting off learning about Greek history, but it's also a great book if you know everything there is to know about Greek history.
In the beginning of the book Helen deceives her husband and sails off with the stunning Prince Paris. At first Cassandra, Paris's sister has a lot of hatred toward Helen. Later on she can't help but start to like the beautiful and friendly young woman. This book is all about the growing friendship of two women inside the walls of Troy.
Overall I think "Inside the Walls of Troy" is a great book. After all I've read it twice. I think the book is definitely worth reading. If you're like me you'll love it.

In the book a 12-year old girl got kidnapped by thesus and was brought to Athens. When she was brought back by her 2 brothers. The suitors were there. Dozens and Dozens came and she married a hariy old man Menelus. Her love did come along (Paris) and she got brought to Troy and the only 2 people who knew she was coming and was going to bring disturuction to Troy (Cassandra) and (Helenus). King Priam did invite Helen into the family and the trojan war began, I the book you will discover the heartbreaking story of 2 women who meet during the 6 years of war.

Good ideas, not the best execution..........2004-08-15

We've heard the male version of the Trojan War for centuries. What about the women involved? How did Helen feel? What would it have been like to be Cassandra and have to watch your brothers head off into battle? The author takes you there. While personally I believe she could have included even more viewpoints of other women, and switched back and forth between Helen and Cassandra, the author opted to start with Helen's life as a child and switch to Cassandra's viewpoint after Helen arrives in Troy. While many would think this would make the book a bit unbalanced, it actually works quite well, as we see Cassandra's feelings towards Helen greatly change over the many years Troy is under siege. Overall, a pretty enjoyable read.

To diminish the threat of a rapidly changing climate, emissions of CO2 should be reduced. One way to reduce these emissions is CO2 removal -- the recovery of carbon dioxide from energy conversion processes and storage outside the atmosphere. This book, authored by one of the pioneers in this field, gives an extensive description of three methods of capturing CO2 from flue gases of a conventional coal-fired power plant and two methods that are based on the modification of an integrated coal gasifier combined cycle plant. The present state of the technology is described and optimized recovery designs are presented. Energy use is calculated in detail and elaborate cost calculations are given. In the last chapter, global storage potentials and costs of CO2 in aquifers, empty natural gas, and oil fields, are discussed.

Nice re-examination.......2004-08-01

An oft-times hilarious new look at the classic Don Quixote (and other novels) by Cervantes. Johnson does not follow the now standard view that the novel represents a timeless view of humanity, or at least of the specimens it depicts. Rather, Johnson places the novel squarely in the history of the Europe and the Mediterranean in which Cervantes was a part.

There are lengthy discussions of the ongoing Christian-Muslim struggles and commercial and social interactions. And how these relate to passages in the novel. Johnson shows how the manifold contrasts between the Spanish and Ottoman empires are expressed in various Cervantes' novels. Perhaps the surprising thing to some modern readers is that the Ottoman empire seems in part closer to our ideals than the Spanish. Johnson points out that many commentators uniformly describe the Ottomans as pluralistic, multiethnic, multilingual and multireligious. Whereas the Spanish empire is avowedly "pure" in each of these aspects.
