Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Daddy, let's listen to bird songs..........2003-05-18

This is the second volume of the Texas bird song series.

I got this tape together with the first volume a few years ago and listened to it every now and then. When I would drive the little one around I would put in this tape for him to listen to. Now he is old enough to ask for what he wanted to. Very often he asks to listen to the "bird songs" tape. Now at home when he hears birds singing outside he says excitedly, "Shh, quiet. Bird songs." He is even able to pick out a mockingbird song from a bluejay, not bad for a 2 1/2 year old!

I do like the bird songs and they sound fine. but the voice over narration before each song sounds like the guy is in another room as in the first volume. Maybe the should have asked some local mixmaster DJ to dub the voice to where it sounds normal. This is not a condition of the tapes age as I noticed this as soon as I unwrapped the tape and plopped it in the tape player. This is the only flaw on this tape, and not much of one but there you go. The cassette comes with 12 small photos of the birds in question on the tape.

In Vol.2 you get a few more different birds on the tape (16 as opposed to 12) The birds are the: Olive Sparrow, Laughing Gull, Barn Swallow, Bewick's Wren, Indigo Bunting, Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher, Eastern Tufted Titmouse, Chuck-Will's-Widow, Black Necked Stilt, Marsh Wren, Golden-Cheeked Warbler, Blue Jay, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, Northern Cardinal, and the White-Eyed Viero.

I delighted in discovering that the Laughing Gull is name of the gull that follows the gulf coast shrimpers. The sound they make is unmistakable.

2 out of 5 stars stereotype of the sequel.......2007-09-13

In the sequel to Summer of My German Soldier, Patty Bergen journeys (against her parents' wishes--what else is new?) to Europe with the intention of visiting the family of Anton, whom she sheltered during WWII. In Europe, Patty encounters various people, particularly romantic encounters. She must grow away from her dependence on men like her abusive and controlling father, away from her need and desire for a mother, through her stomach issues, and into her own. Unfortunately, the story is slow and uninteresting. Although thoroughly introspective, Patty really doesn't have anything new to say. Things that were appropriate for a teenager seem winy for an adult. The sequel lacks the complexities, personal and interpersonal, and the dramatic excitement of the first novel. Grade: C+

              3 out of 5 stars Disoppointed..........2006-09-06

I, too, read this after 'Summer of My German Soldier'. Actually, this is not a bad book, but is a disoppointment after the first, gorgeous novel. The heroine goes to France, and decides to seek the family of Anton. However, she meets someone else. This is a realistic book, and anyone would probably done the same things as the heroine does.

5 out of 5 stars MORNING IS A LONG TIME COMING.......2006-04-30

I really liked this book, and I found it intresting to see what happened to Patty after the events in "Summer of my German Solider". It was exactly the opposite of what I had thought about when I read "Summer of my German Soldier". The characters were more grown up, and had to deal with different issues than in "Summer of my German Solider". If you liked "Summer of My German Soldier" you will like "Morning is a long time coming" also.

2 out of 5 stars This was a LONG book, and MORNING never CAME.......2005-10-11

(I know this review is long, but it should be READ)

This book was very dissapointing. I LOVED "Summer of my German Soldier" and couln't wait to read the sequal. But once it was over I felt the book was very structured. If you have read this book and was dissapointed you can probobly relate.Even though the detailed emotions were good. The book only mentioned Anton a few times, plus Patty liked lost the gold ring because she didnt wear it or even mention it. Almost everything Anotn had taught her was gone. The she meets Roger in Paris and almost half the book takes place there. But in my opinion Roger is a JERK and Patty is so desperate for love and to selfish and proud to take Ruth's so she goes for the first good looking thing that comes along. There is also only 1 chapter on Anton's family and Patty only spends about 10 minutes there. This book was a big let down compared to how great SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER was! Plus it did not answer many of the unanswerd questions that the pre-qual left behind!! I was not pleased with this book. It was complicated, and rushed.

5 out of 5 stars Good book if you love romance and self-journey.......2005-03-15

I know many people on here thought they'd read this book and it would be just as good if not better, than the prequel. Exepct that NOT to happen to anything. BUT I thought this book was very good. We see Patty moving on with her life, trying to the past where it belongs, and finally turn into a beautiful lady. She becomes more brave with her oppinions, more confidant...the time she spends in Paris is realistic, because she ran out of money, and she liked it there. So she did wot any other girl would've done. Stayed for the cute guy. Who hasn't? She finds out more about who she is as a person. She finds love with Roger, and it's very romantic. When she goes to germany, I feel she didn't speak to the father because she figured she didn't need to anymore. Why bring up the past with a stranger? She found her closure or didn't need it. I love this book for being realistic and true to human emotion and reactions. There's no huge drammatic make-up scene between her and Roger. Just natural.

This is not a story about her finding closure of Anton's death, this is a story about Patty growing up and changing into the better person she needs to be. This is also not Patty's Autobiography where you read every single detail of her non-exsistant life. And if these things are all you see, then you've completly missed the point of the story.

The amazing armored bodies of beetles allow them to bore into plant tissue, navigate fast-moving streams, burrow through seemingly impenetrable soil, survive blistering heat, and fly. With around 8,000 species living in California, beetles represent the largest and most diverse group of organisms in the state and are an excellent subject for study since they can be found almost everywhere--in backyards, gardens, forests, and deserts. This, the only guide to California beetles available, is the perfect book for anyone--from outdoor enthusiasts to professional biologists--who wants to explore the fascinating world of beetles. In addition to providing information on where to find and how to study beetles, the book also gives an engaging and accessible overview of their natural history, biology, distribution, and relation to humans.
                          * 51 color illustrations and supporting black-and-white photographs and drawings identify the characteristics and habits of 23 of the most conspicuous and interesting beetle families in California
                          * Chapters describe beetles of special interest--fossil species, endangered species, pests, biological control agents, and more

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to California Beetles is really an introduction to IPM.......2007-02-16

An an entomologist I was really a little disappointed in this book because it has very few pictures of beetles and seemed unbalanced for the target audience. I you want an introduction to the life history and ecology of some of the most important beetles, this is the book for you -- but be prepared to struggle through some hard vocabulary. (For example, microfossils, radiocarbon dating (undefined), Pleistocene matrix, and faunal are found on page 100). If you want to identify beetles, purchase a field guide.

                                    Description:
A new highly selective silver(I) electrode was prepared with a PVC membrane using 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole as an electroactive material, 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE) as a plasticizer and sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) as an additive in the percentage ratio of 3:3:62:32 (corrole:NaTPB:o-NPOE:PVC, w:w). The electrode exhibited linear response with a near Nernstian slope of 54.8mV/decade within the concentration range of 5.1x10^-^6 to 1.0x10^-^1M silver ions, with a working pH range from 4.0 to 8.0, and a fast response time of <30s. Selectivity coefficients for Ag(I) relative to a number of interfering ions were investigated. The electrode is highly selective for Ag(I) ions over a large number of mono-, bi-, and tri-valent cations. Common interferents like Hg^2^+ and Cd^2^+ show very low interfering effect on the silver assay, which is valuable property of the proposed electrode. Several electroactive materials and solvent mediators have been compared and the experimental conditions were optimized. The sensor was applied to the determination of silver in real ore samples with satisfied results.

The utility of carbon as a new component in a highly selective and sensitive coated wire electrode (CWE) for silver ion using 2-[(2-{2-[(2-carboxyphenyl)sulfanyl]ethoxy}ethyl)sulfanyl]benzoic acid as ionophore is demonstrated. This CWE exhibits a good Nernstian slope of 59.0 +/- 1mV per decade in a wide linear concentration range of 2. 0 x 10^-^8 to 1.0 x 10^-^2M for AgNO"3. The detection limit of this electrode is 1.2 x 10^-^8M of AgNO"3. This sensor has a short response time of about 10s and could be used in a pH range of 2.5-8.7. High selectivity was obtained over seventeen various metal ions. The electrode is reproducible and stable for a period of two months. The proposed electrode has been used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration. This CWE was successfully applied in determination of silver in sulphadiazine cream and in fruit juice matrixes.

                                        Description:
Derivatives of phenoxazine dyes serve as chromoionophores in the field of chemical sensors. By studying the changes of the distribution of membrane components in ETH 5294 based, pH sensitive, ion-selective membranes using spectroelectrochemical microscopy (SpECM), the decay in the concentration of the protonated chromoionophore was generally much larger than expected upon previous studies. These recorded changes could not be interpreted with the leaching of the protonated or unprotonated forms of ETH 5294 or the tetraphenyl borate derivatives embedded in the membrane. Similarly, the changes could not be explained by the photochemical decomposition of the tetraphenyl borate derivatives (tetraphenyl borate, TPB^- or tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate, TpClPB^-). The decrease in the absorbance value measured at 660nm, at the absorbance maximum of the protonated chromoionophore has been linked to the photochemically initiated, singlet oxygen mediated decomposition of ETH 5294. The decomposition occurs only if the wavelength of the illuminating light is larger than ~580nm, and the rate of decomposition is facilitated by the presence of certain anions in the membrane (TPB^-, and TpClPB^-) and in the sample solution (Br^-, I^-, and Cl^-) as they were penetrating the membrane by acid coextraction. On the other hand, the protonated chromoionophore was found to be stable in membranes cast with tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) phenyl] borate anion (TFPB) or in acidic solutions of NO"3^-, ClO"4^-, SO"4^-, TFPB^- and citrate anions. In comparison to ETH 5294 (chromoionophore I), ETH 2439 (chromoionophore II) was found completely stable, and the decomposition of ETH 5350 (chromoionophore III) was also hardly detectable. In our view, in the light of the experimental results summarized in this study some of the widely accepted views and practices in chromoionophore based sensors research should be changed and some of the results should be reevaluated.

In this work, a highly selective and sensitive monohydrogen phosphate membrane sensor based on a molybdenum bis(2-hydroxyanil) acetylacetonate complex (MAA) is reported. The sensor shows a linear dynamic range between 1.0x10^-^1 and 1.0x10^-^7M, with a nice Nernstian behavior (-29.5+/-0.3mVdecade^-^1) in pH of 8.2. The detection limit of the electrode is 6.0x10^-^8M (~6ppb). The best performance was obtained with a membrane composition of 32% poly(vinyl chloride), 58% benzyl acetate, 2% hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and 8% MAA. The sensor possesses the advantages of short response time, low detection limit and especially, very good selectivity towards a large number of organic and inorganic anions including salicylate, citrate, tartarate, acetate, oxalate, fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulfite, sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, cyanide, thiocyanate, perchlorate, metavanadate, and bicarbonate ions. The electrode can be used for at least 10 weeks without any considerable divergence in its slope and detection limit. It was used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of monohydrogenphosphate ion with barium chloride. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to direct determination of monohydrogenphosphate in two fertilizer samples (NPK).

                                            Description:
An electrode originally sensitive to dodecyltrimethylammonium ions (DTA^+) was proven to be sensitive to tetradecyltrimethylammonium ions (TTA^+) and was used for determination of critical micelle concentration of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) in water. Moreover the response of the electrode was tested in presence of non-aqueous polar solvents i.e. dimethyl formamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) in water and was observed to be Nernstian within the concentration range studied (up to 40% v/v of DMF and DMSO). The validity of this electrode, for electrochemical measurements, was checked by comparing the critical micelle concentration values of TTAB obtained by using the electrode, with those obtained by conductivity measurements in mixed polar solvents. The effect of solvent on the micellization of TTAB has been discussed.

                                                    Book Description

Edith Warner (1893-1951), who lived by the Rio Grande at the Otowi Switch in northern New Mexico, has become a legendary figure owing largely to her portrayal in two books: The Woman at Otowi Crossing, by Frank Waters, and The House at Otowi Bridge, by Peggy Pond Church. Because she is famous for her tearoom, where she entertained scientists from the Manhattan Project, few people realize that Edith Warner was a serious writer. Here for the first time she is allowed to speak for herself.

The book's title is taken from an autobiographical fragment published here for the first time. Also included are letters, essays published and unpublished, and journal entries (salvaged by various friends from the original, which was burned after Warner's death at her request). The editor provides a useful introduction outlining Edith Warner's life and sets it in local and historical context, along with a wonderful collection of period photographs and a facsimile of Edith's famous chocolate cake recipe.

Thousands of readers have been fascinated by this modest woman whose friendships with Pueblo Indians and atomic scientists seem to epitomize the paradoxes of life in New Mexico. To read this book is to hear her own quiet voice, describing pueblo ceremonials, detailing the difficulties of life during the war years, and above all recording her own spiritual relationship with the New Mexico landscape. For Edith Warner her work in the world—building a house, running a restaurant, writing it all down—was a kind of meditation. People still come to New Mexico for the reasons that drew her here eighty years ago, and her response to New Mexico can now take its rightful place in the state's cultural heritage.

To read this book is to hear her own quiet voice, describing pueblo ceremonials, detailing the difficulties of life during the war years, and above all recording her own spiritual relationship with the New Mexico landscape.

5 out of 5 stars In Edith Warner's Own Words.......2002-04-08

Edith Warner's own words exceed in beauty and simpicity anyone else's account of what her experiences were like in Northern New Mexico during the era of the making of the atomic bomb. Captured for the reader are the feelings of an anglo woman being accepted by Native Americans, the difficult life a woman making it on her own, and her intense feelings about how the war affected pueblo people.
Editor, Patrick Burns, has done a fine job of editing and staying true to the spirit of these wonderful writings!

                                                    5 out of 5 stars In Edith's Own Words.......2002-01-13

Edith Warner came to New Mexico from the East in 1922, seeking a place to regain her failing physical health. Rather, she found a place ideal for her spiritual health, an ancient land where she felt at peace. She settled into a little house beside the Rio Grande at a lonely railroad siding called Otowi, where she supervised the off loading of freight. Ironically, in that out-of-the-way location, fate placed her at a crossroads in time, to live between the pastoral life of the neighboring Pueblo Indians and the frenzied pace of nearby scientists ushering in the atomic age at Los Alamos. In the midst of these different worlds, Edith completed her personal journey and touched the lives of everyone who passed her way, from sheepherders and potters to world-renowned physicists. Her story has been presented in two previous books, THE HOUSE AT OTOWI BRIDGE, a memoir and southwestern classic by Peggy Pond Church, and THE WOMAN AT OTOWI CROSSING, a fictionalized and altered version of Edith's life by Frank Waters. Now, IN THE SHADOW OF LOS ALAMOS offers the story through Edith's own writing, with a preface to set the stage.

As a reviewer, I am suppose to tell you whether or not you will enjoy this book, but such a prediction would be based solely on opinion. What I can tell you is that Patrick Burns, the book's editor, was passionately dedicated to his project on Edith Warner and that his admiration of Edith, despite never having met her, shows through in his work. Burns pursued lost documents in dusty archives, salvaged old letters that were about to be destroyed, and talked with Edith's friends and relatives from around the country to gather and preserve this record of her writing, which includes published and unpublished articles, letters, and surviving portions of her journal. IN THE SHADOW OF LOS ALAMOS is the result of years of in-depth research into a remarkable woman and a place in time. Edith's story leads the reader to wonder what might have become of her had she stayed in Pennsylvania, never having found her little house by the river, but we will never know because Edith recognized that she was right where she was suppose to be. She pursued her destiny. Through this book, she continues to inspire others to do the same. My opinion? You will more than enjoy IN THE SHADOW OF LOS ALAMOS.
