      Book Description

The 20th century has experienced environmental changes that appear to be unprecedented in their rate and magnitude during the Earths history.
For the first time, this special volume brings together a wide range of perspectives and data that speak directly to the issues of ecological change using stable isotope tracers. The information presented originates from a range of biological and geochemical sources and from research fields within biological, climatological and physical disciplines covering time-scales from days to centuries. Unlike any other reference, editors discuss where isotope data can detect, record, trace and help to interpret environmental change.

      * Provides researchers with ground-breaking data on how to predict the terrestrial ecosystems response to the ongoing rapid alterations
      * Reveals how ecosystems have responded to environmental and biotic fluctuations in the past
      * Includes examples from research by a wide range of biological and physical scientists who are using isotopic records to both detect and interpret environmental change

        Book Description

This book highlights new and emerging uses of stable isotope analysis in a variety of ecological disciplines. While the use of natural abundance isotopes in ecological research is now relatively standard, new techniques and ways of interpreting patterns are developing rapidly. The second edition of this book provides a thorough, up-to-date examination of these methods of research. As part of the Ecological Methods and Concepts series which provides the latest information on experimental techniques in ecology, this book looks at a wide range of techniques that use natural abundance isotopes to: bull; bull;follow whole ecosystem element cycling bull;understand processes of soil organic matter formation bull;follow the movement of water in whole watersheds bull;understand the effects of pollution in both terrestrial and aquatic environments bull;study extreme systems such as hydrothermal vents bull;follow migrating organisms In each case, the book explains the background to the methodology, looks at the underlying principles and assumptions, and outlines the potential limitations and pitfalls. Stable Isotopes in Ecology and Environmental Science is an ideal resource for both ecologists who are new to isotopic analysis, and more experienced isotope ecologists interested in innovative techniques and pioneering new uses.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for Every Radioecologist.......2000-09-27

The bible for every scientist who wants to apply isotopic techniques in his research. Wide approach to the use of radioactive tracers of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in biology. The reader will find many examples of research where tracer methodology enabled to explain circulation of elements in the land, water and air environment. The author presents the system of biological compartments, which are considered during tracer research. Thus, we do not deal with the absolute quantity of radioactive substance in an environmental sample, as used in radioecology. We can create a model explaining physiological processes that are evolved. What is important, some processes show the fractionation due to the isotopic chemical effect. Inexperienced researcher can find mathematical approach to this problem. Finally, Schimel describes some principal isotopic techniques and methods applied in the isotopic laboratory. Basic file on the safety rules is also included. Generally speaking, "Theory and Application of Tracers" is a good comprehensive handbook of isotopic methodology.

Trisha Thompson and her best friend Christina are having a great senior year. Trisha and her boyfriend, Cody, are making plans to attend Indiana University together in the fall, while Christina has already received a scholarship to the University of Vermont. Everything would be perfect if only Trisha got along with Christina’s controlling boyfriend Tucker, who is trying to convince Christina not to go away for college. But suddenly their lives change one night when Tucker is driving the four home from an away basketball game. When his car hits a patch of black ice and overturns, Tucker walks away with barely a scratch, but Trisha is injured, Cody is in a coma, and Christina is dead. Those left behind must learn that it takes time for their scars—both visible and not—to heal. And they must find the courage to move on with their lives.

                            5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!.......2007-04-06

This book was great! I highly recommend it. It was sad but yet happy at the same time. Lurlene McDaniel is a great author. This is the second book by her that I have read and both are great. This book has made some people cry so if you do not like to cry then you better not read this book. This book did not make me cry though. I won't tell you the ending but you will love this book if you read it.

                            5 out of 5 stars My review.......2006-12-16

The name of my book is Telling Christina Goodbye by Lurlene McDaniel. This is a fiction book. Trisha Thompson is the main character. Her and her boyfriend Cody plan to go to Indiana University together for college. Christina got a scholarship to University of Vermont. Christina's boyfriend Tucker, is trying to get her to stay back home though. Everything was going just fine until one day, when Tucker was driving home from a basketball game with all four of them in the car, hit a patch of black ice and overturned the car. Tucker was not injured, Trisha was injured, Cody was in a coma, and Christina was dead. Now Trisha needs to cope with her emotions and hope that Cody will get his memory back.

I liked this book very much. I thought it was a sad book but still very interesting. I think this is a good book for teens to read since it takes place in a high school.

Lurlene McDaniel is my favorite author, and I love her work. I was a little disapointed with "Telling Christina Goodbye" though. I don't think that the idea is original, mainly because I didn't really know the charecters well enough to root for them. I didn't think that this book is as good as most of Lurlene's, although you may feel differently. Even though this book isn't one of my favorites, it is still worth reading.

                            -thanks

Molecular imaging is a rapidly emerging field that translates many concepts developed for molecular biology and cellular imaging to the in vivo imaging of intact organisms. The technique allows the study of molecular biological events in their full context and will therefore become an indispensable tool for biomedical research and drug discovery and development. This volume familiarizes the reader with the concepts of imaging and molecular imaging in particular. Basic principles of imaging technologies, reporter moieties for the various imaging modalities and the design of target reporter constructs are described in the first part. The second part illustrates how these tools can be used to visualize relevant molecular events: the biodistribution of drugs/ligands, the expression of drug targets (receptors, enzymes), and the consequences of the molecular drug-target interactions (pathway activations, system responses). A final chapter deals with visualization of cell migration (cell therapies).

It seems that with the ability to get any signal at all through a body, the modern day imaging systems can produce an image with useful information. In this book various signal generating systems (I guess you would call them) be it X-Ray tomography, magnetic resonance, and nuclear imaging are discussed.

This is followed with a discussion on the various techniques for reporting the images. Finally the book discusses the uses of these imaging techniques in examining the actions of drugs in living animals. These techniques are non-invasive so that what the drug is doing can be observed in real time. This is extremely important as getting the drug to the proper location in the patient where it can work is of the utmost in importance. Other uses of the technology are likewise discussed such as cell migration.

This book represents a good summary of the state of the art as it exists today and points in some of the directions that research is going in this rapidly emerging field.

The years spanned by this collection--1945-1950--were monumental ones for George Orwell, years in which his literary reputation and his bank account grew in tandem, thanks to the publication of Animal Farm and 1984. The realignments brought about by the end of World War II and Orwell's increasingly virulent anti-Stalinism provided ample fodder for the political journalist. Regular columns in British papers and frequent contributions to such American journals as the Partisan Review exercised the literary critic, the essayist, and the commentator on popular culture. Even while grieving for his first wife, caring for his adopted toddler son, bedridden by the lung ailments that killed him early in 1950, Orwell was still regularly producing four pieces every week. Increasingly, his social life took place by mail.

The brave, wistful letters Orwell wrote to personal friends and professional colleagues in his last year show him trying to imagine a future even as he put his affairs in order. On 11 May 1949, he closed one to fellow novelist Anthony Powell: "It looks as if I may have to spend the rest of my life, if not actually in bed, at any rate at the bath-chair level. I could stand that for say 5 years if only I could work. At present I can do nothing, not even a book review. Please give everyone my love."

The essays in this collection include such keepers as "Such, Such Were the Joys," a long, harrowing memoir of Orwell's days at a British prep school; "Politics and the English Language," which examines the symbiosis of what it is possible to say in words and what it is possible to think; "How the Poor Die," a chilling piece of social reporting; and "Good Bad Books," in which he opines, "The fact that one can be amused or excited or even moved by a book that one's intellect simply refuses to take seriously is a reminder that art is not the same thing as cerebration."

Bringing together the public utterances and the private correspondence of a writer at the top of his game and the end of his life, this volume is worth reading for the individual pieces, some of Orwell's finest, as well as for the portrait it yields of a highly intelligent and principled man doing his best to play the hand fate dealt him with integrity and grace. --Joyce Thompson
