Quit your job and sell your house, there are festivals to attend. Surely before you're done with travel you'll want to take in a vegetarian banquet for 600 monkeys in Thailand, a ripe tomato battle in Spain, the Wilderness Woman Competition in Alaska, Sweden's Kraftskiva (Crayfish Festival), and Prague's Spring International Music Festival, held on the anniversary of Bedrich Smetana's death and starting off with a procession from his grave. And then there are the 996 others documented by Tom Clynes in 90 countries around the world. Time's awasting.

This book is about as thorough as you can imagine... from elderly bachelors trying to get hitched in Ireland to a festival thrown for monkeys in Thailand, this book can show you where the fun stuff is. (That is, if you are into old Irish men and monkeys) If you are planning a trip around the world, or even just to a particular region, this is a helpful guide to interesting cultural events that regular travel guides don't cover.

Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of eighteenth-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas.
There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret. This could be the adventure of her life--if only she doesn't get caught. . . .

What an excellent read! The writing is superb, the characters are dynamic, and the story as perfectly balanced, detailed, and deft as the ship on which it's set! I couldn't have enjoyed Jacky's story or its telling more. This writer is truly an adept artist. Were I 15 years younger (i.e. 9 yrs old), I've no doubt I'd be arguing with the librarian that the book belongs in the nonfiction shelves. Such a true-to-life adventure.

This book is extremely entertaining and easy to read. It does take some getting use to in the beginning because of how the main character speaks, but you quickly get used to her street slang and humor. The book is a quick read and I think that anyone would enjoy it- boy, girl, adult, etc. I got it for Christmas and couldn't put it down the moment I started to read it because it was so interesting and funny.. just couldn't help but want to know what happens next! The ending is a bit abrupt but don't worry about that.. the second book, Curse of the Blue Tattoo: Being an Account of the Misadventures of Jacky Faber continues right from where the first left off. I purchased all the books in the series and can't wait to read them all. I had some trouble putting them in order as they are not numbered on Amazon or on the covers but here they are:

Book 1: Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventure of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy

Book 2: Curse of the Blue Tattoo: Being an Account of the Misadventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman, and Fine Lady

Book 3: Under the Jolly Roger: Being an Account of the Further Nautical Adventures of Jacky Faber

Book 4: In the Belly of the Bloodhound: Being an Account of the Particularly Peculiar Adventure in the Life of Jacky Faber

                      Enjoy!

PS: If you liked this book I highly recommend Tamora Pierce's "Alanna" quartet as well as "Protector of the Small" quartet. They're great!

I adore the bloody jack books. I was given them to read by two friends who promised that they were wonderful. I was skeptical, but so pleasantly surprised! My friends had promised pirate books, but I don't really think of them as particularly pirate-y. I have since recommended them to 4 people (a mix of friends and relatives, including an aunt who teaches 4th grade,) and every one of them has fallen in love with Jacky Faber, and her 'mis'-adventures. Utterly charming and always hilarious, these are currently my absolute favorite books.

                        Book Description

Individual-based models are an exciting and widely used new tool for ecology. These computational models allow scientists to explore the mechanisms through which population and ecosystem ecology arises from how individuals interact with each other and their environment. This book provides the first in-depth treatment of individual-based modeling and its use to develop theoretical understanding of how ecological systems work, an approach the authors call "individual-based ecology."

Grimm and Railsback start with a general primer on modeling: how to design models that are as simple as possible while still allowing specific problems to be solved, and how to move efficiently through a cycle of pattern-oriented model design, implementation, and analysis. Next, they address the problems of theory and conceptual framework for individual-based ecology: What is "theory"? That is, how do we develop reusable models of how system dynamics arise from characteristics of individuals? What conceptual framework do we use when the classical differential equation framework no longer applies? An extensive review illustrates the ecological problems that have been addressed with individual-based models. The authors then identify how the mechanics of building and using individual-based models differ from those of traditional science, and provide guidance on formulating, programming, and analyzing models. This book will be helpful to ecologists interested in modeling, and to other scientists interested in agent-based modeling.

5 out of 5 stars Best all around resource for ecological studies.......2003-05-23

Begon's book is the best way to get a serious handle on the complexities of ecology. This book attempts no dumbing down and gives more resources than could ever be used in a lifetime.
The explanations given for basic concepts are unique and cannot be found anywhere else. For example, this book makes a clear point about the relationship between evolution and ecology. Chapter One starts off with a discussion of natural selection that is unique; seems that one must rely on an ecologist for a full understanding of evolution. Begon suggests that the word abaptation be used to describe the match that most organisms display with their environment because that word carries with it the historical meaning that is left out of the picture when the word adaptation is used to descirbe the match between organism and environment.
All important areas of ecology are covered; population dynamics, energy in communities and biological diversity. Again, I have yet to see, after having examined several major publishers' offerings, a better book for either someone just getting started in ecology or a person already well versed in the topic.

5 out of 5 stars The best ecology book I ever read.......2000-05-28

An exelent book, covering almost any area of ecology. Lot's of useful references. An essential book for any ecologist.

As an ecology student, I expected a sound scientifically written ecology and management tool. Although some selected studies were quoted, this book appears to have a political agenda. Every section has a "and here's why doves should be hunted" swing which I found to be annoying.

                            Book Description

A common tendency in the field of population ecology has been to overlook individual differences by treating populations as homogeneous units; conversely, in behavioral ecology the tendency has been to concentrate on how individual behavior is shaped by evolutionary forces, but not on how this behavior affects population dynamics. Adam Lomnicki and others aim to remedy this one-sidedness by showing that the overall dynamical behavior of populations must ultimately be understood in terms of the behavior of individuals. Professor Lomnicki's wide-ranging presentation of this approach includes simple mathematical models aimed at describing both the origin and consequences of individual variation among plants and animals.

The author contends that further progress in population ecology will require taking into account individual differences other than sex, age, and taxonomic affiliation--unequal access to resources, for instance. Population ecologists who adopt this viewpoint may discover new answers to classical questions of population ecology. Partly because it uses a variety of examples from many taxonomic groups, this work will appeal not only to population ecologists but to ecologists in general.

                              Book Description

Population dynamics and animal behavior are two subjects which have developed almost independently, despite widespread acceptance of the idea that they must be related. This book provides a novel framework for combining these two subjects and considers a range of conservation issues. The
author suggests how to extrapolate from behavioral interactions to population-level phenomena; each chapter presents a combination of theory and empirical examples, including modelling techniques. Students and researchers in animal behavior, population ecology, and conservation biology will welcome
                              this new approach.

                                Book Description

Parasites evolve under selective pressures which are different from those acting on free-living organisms. The aim of this textbook is to present these pressures and to show how they have shaped the ecology of parasites over evolutionary time. Broad theoretical concepts are explained simply and clearly and illustrated throughout with example organisms. The book will be an invaluable text for advanced undergraduate biologists who are studying evolutionary biology, ecology, population biology, parasitology and evoluationary ecology. It will also prove to be a valuable reference to postgraduate students and researchers in the same fields.

                                Book Description

Snow Geese: Grandeur and Calamity on an Arctic Landscape chronicles the fascinating life of the lesser snow goose, from Gulf Coast marshes through the farmlands of the U.S. and Canadian Great Plains to Arctic breeding areas. Snow goose populations have grown dramatically since the mid 20th century; today the lesser snow goose is the most abundant Arctic-nesting goose in the world. Its abundance has wrought serious and long-term degradation on the Arctic habitats upon which the geese depend for sustenance. The degradation threatens the future of the snow goose and all the other species of resident and migratory wildlife that share these habitats. Snow Geese: Grandeur and Calamity on an Arctic Landscape is intended to help the reader understand the causes and consequences of these changes as well as the spectacular beauty of the snow goose and the places in which it lives. That task is made easier by 100 photographs that illustrate this book, photographs taken by some of North America's best wildlife photographers and by students and scientists that know these birds intimately. (10 3/4 x 8 1/4, 96 pages, color photos)

                                      Book Description

Solid waste management issues are a highly emotive topic. Disposal costs need to be balanced against environmental impact, which often results in heated public debate. Disposal options such as incineration and landfill, whilst unpopular with both the public and environmental pressure groups, do not pose the same environmental and health risks as, for example, recycling plants. This book, written by international experts, discusses the various waste disposal options that are available (landfill, incineration, composting, recycling) and then reviews their impact on the environment, and particularly on human health. Comprehensive and highly topical, Environmental and Health Impact of Solid Waste Management Activities will make a strong contribution to scientific knowledge in the area, and will be of value to scientists and policy-makers in particular.
