The specialty of the Time Out guides is getting inside the local culture and nightlife. I have used the Time Out guides for London, Paris, & New York. My favorite Time Out guide is for the king of nightlife cities, Madrid.
For this guide the Time Out people bring all their style and insight, but it is a 5 star book on a 3 star city, meaning that Edinburg has not as many museums or theatres, etc, as London; here the Time Out guide is very helpful in spending time like and with natives.
This guide does a very good job of covering Edinburgh, gives information on Glasgow, and the areas of interest above, below, and to the East of Edinburgh.
The first 30 pages covers the history of the Scotland, Edinburgh, and the current conditions, just enough to give an overview. The next 70 pages covers Edinburgh & its suburbs, with good detailed information on the sights of interest, including websites. 20 pages on hotels/accomodations; 41 pages on restauranets/cafes/pubs/bars; 25 pages on shopping;and the next 40 pages covers art galleries, what to do with children, music, theatre, nightlife, sports, etc.
Then 20 pages on Glasgow, 20 pages on day trips, & 20 pages on the traveling-tourist essentials.
Scotland is a dificult area to cover since it is unlikely you are going to spend a week in Edinburgh for itself as you would in London. I would have liked to see the Time Out guide split 50/50 on Glasgow & Edinburgh. Time Out guides are always skimpy on pictures, the Eyewitness guides make a good combination with them.
The maps are good, and if you are going to stay in Edinburgh you really must get this book. For me, staying in Glasgow as a base of operations for a week, and day-triping to Edinburgh, Striling, Arran, Loch Lomond, & Ayr, I still found this book quite helpful and was glad I got it.

          Book Description

"I propose to show in this book that a man's natural abilities are derived by inheritance, under exactly the same limitations as are the form and physical features of the whole organic world. Consequently, as it is easy, notwithstanding those limitations, to obtain by careful selection a permanent breed of dogs or horses gifted with peculiar powers of running, or of doing anything else, so it would be quite practicable to produce a highly-gifted race of men by judicious marriages during several consecutive generations." -Introductory Chapter

A cousin of Charles Darwin, Francis Galton (1822-1911) was so impressed by Darwin's On the Origin of Species that he decided to investigate in detail the implications of inheritance and evolution for the development of outstanding human abilities. By "hereditary genius" Galton meant, "an ability that was exceptionally high and at the same time inborn," and he argued that in the debate over "nature versus nurture" (an expression that he coined) nature always prevails. In 1869, he published this, his first, book on the topic, presenting a good deal of evidence showing that exceptional ability often ran in families. In separate chapters devoted to outstanding professionals ranging from English judges to "wrestlers of the North Country," Galton pointed out that most of these high achievers had relatives who also displayed notable abilities. Based on this statistical sampling, he concluded that eminence in any field was due to hereditary factors.

Many greeted these results with skepticism, but Charles Darwin expressed his admiration for Galton's results and later cited his work in The Descent of Man. Galton went on to use this initial research as the basis for a new field, which he called "eugenics," the aim of which was "the betterment of the human race" through "appropriate marriages or abstention from marriage." Although Galton's ideas gained momentum over several decades, they were eventually discredited after being misappropriated by the Nazis as part of their racist ideology. Today, however, with the discovery of heritable diseases, the use of genetic screening to eliminate undesirable traits, sperm banks, and the possibility of "designer babies" and human cloning, Galton's groundbreaking research has gained renewed currency and will be the subject of debate for years to come.

The first quantitative analysis of human mental ability. Galton introduced the notion that mental ability was normally distributed in much the same ways as are physical traits. His strong nativistic perspective served as the point of origin for the nature/nurture debate in its modern form.

Text extracted from opening pages of book: HEEEDITAEY GENIUS AN INQUIRY INTO ITS LAWS AND CONSEQUENCES BY FEANCIS GALTON, F. E. S., ETC. ILontion MACMILLAN AND CO. H> 0 Second Edition ( Extra Crown Ivo) ISC2 PREFACE TO THE OEIGINAL EDITION THE idea of investigating the subject of hereditary genius occurred to me during the course of a purely ethnological inquiry, into the mental peculiarities of different races; when the fact, that characteristics cling to families, was so frequently forced on my notice as to induce me to pay especial attention to that branch of the subject. I began by thinking over the dispositions and achievements of my contemporaries at school, at college, and in after life, and was surprised to find how frequently ability seemed to go by descent. Then I made a cursory examination into the kindred of about four hundred illustrious men of all periods of history, and the results were such, in my own opinion, as completely to establish the theory that genius was hereditary, under limitations that required to be investigated. Thereupon I set to work to gather a large amount of carefully selected biographical data, and in the meantime wrote two articles on the subject, which appeared in Macmilla'ris Magazine in June and in August, 1865. I also attacked the subject from many different sides and sometimes with very minute inquiries, because it was long before the methods I finally adopted were matured. I mention all this, to show that the foundation PREFACE TO THE ORIGINAL EDITION for my theories is broader than appears in the book, and as a partial justification if I have occasionally been be trayed into speaking somewhat more confidently than the evidence I have adduced would warrant. I trust the reader will pardon a small percentage of error and inaccuracy, if it be so small as not to affect the general value of my results. No one can hate inaccuracy more than myself, or can have a higher idea of what an author owes to his readers, in respect to precision ; but, in a subject like this, it is exceedingly difficult to correct every mistake, and still more so to avoid' omissions. I have often had to run my eyes over many pages of large bio graphical dictionaries and volumes of memoirs to arrive at data, destined to be packed into half a dozen lines, in an appendix to one of my many chapters. The theory of hereditary genius, though usually scouted, has been advocated by a few writers in past as well as in modern times. But I may claim, to be the first to treat the subject in a statistical manner, to arrive at numerical results, and to introduce the law of deviation from an average into discussions on heredity. A great many subjects are discussed in the following pages, which go beyond the primary issue, whether or no genius be hereditary. I could not refuse to consider them, because the bearings of the theory I advocate arc too important to be passed over in silence. PREFATORY CHAPTER TO THE EDITION OF 1892 THIS volume is a reprint of a work published twenty three years ago, which has long been unpurchasable, except at second-hand and at fancy prices. It was a question whether to revise the whole and to bring the information up to date, or simply to reprint it after remedying a few staring errata. The latter course has been adopted, because even a few additional data would have made it necessary to recast all the tabulations, while a thorough reconstruction would be a work of greater labour than I can now undertake. At the time when the book was written, the human mind was popularly thought to act independently of natural laws, and to be capable of almost any achieve ment, if compelled to exert itself by a will that had a power of initiation. Even those who had more philosophical habits of thought were far from looking upon the mental faculties of each individual as b

1869. Galton, an explorer and anthropologist, is known for his pioneering studies of human intelligence. Influenced by the work of his cousin Charles Darwin, he coined the term eugenics (from the Greek eugenes or wellborn) and devoted the latter part of life to applying Darwinian science to develop theories about heredity and good or noble birth. In this volume he makes the case for his theory of hereditary genius. Contents: Classification of Men According to Their Reputation; Classification of Men According to Their Natural Gifts; Comparison of the Two Classifications; Notation; The Judges of England between 1660 and 1865; Statesmen; English Peerages, Their Influence Upon Race; Commanders; Literary Men; Men of Science; Poets; Musicians; Painters; Divines; Senior Classics of Cambridge; Oarsmen; Wrestlers of the North Country; Comparison of Results; The Comparative Worth of Different Races; Influences that Affect the Natural Ability of Nations. Book Description

W.B.Yeats, one of the greatest poets who wrote in English, was also a playwright, theater director, essayist, Senator, and life-long occultist. He knew practically every important figure in the cultural and public life of his time, including Oscar Wilde, Winston Churchill, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Eamon de Valera. In recording the details of these relationships and tracing his prolific literary output, this book is a vivid witness to an extraordinarily important, rich and crowded life, as a context for his work.

                                      Book Description

Russell Simmons, the original and eternal hip-hop mogul, is one of the most innovative and influential figures in modern American business and culture. When no one outside of inner-city New York had even heard of hip-hop, Simmons saw the seeds of a global force that would change the way people talk, dress, listen to music, and choose the heroes they hang on their walls. Today, he oversees a sprawling, multimillion-dollar empire of culture-defining businesses in everything from music to fashion, advertising to film, and media to visual art. At the same time he’s broadened his interests and influence and pushed hip-hop to new plateaus of power and relevance. Life and Def is a one-of-a-kind tale that interweaves the remarkable journey of Russell Simmons with the story of the culture he’s transformed and been transformed by.

In his own brash, compelling voice, Simmons chronicles his numerous business successes and occasional failures. He tells the story of the founding of the legendary Def Jam Records, whose roster stretches from original rap icons like L.L. Cool J, Public Enemy, and the Beastie Boys to today’s top stars, including Jay-Z and DMX. He traces the launching of Def Comedy Jam, the long-running hit television series that introduced a new generation of black comedic stars to America, from Martin Lawrence and Bill Bellamy to Bernie Mac and Chris Rock. He spins hilarious tales of his adventures in Hollywood, where he’s produced hit movies like Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor and worked with quirky geniuses like Abel Ferrara. He also tells the story of Phat Farm, the wildly successful pioneering urban clothing label whose origins lay in Russell’s longtime fascination with fashion (and fashion models).

Simmons’s story is also one of personal transformation, from the driven man who in the heady days of early success indulged himself with drugs, sex, and world-class decadence to the husband and father he is today, a man who has found meaning in activism, philanthropy, and spiritual practice while never losing his passion for the social, political, artistic, and commercial potential of hip-hop.

Through it all he relates telling anecdotes about the characters he’s dealt with: models and gangsters, street poets and gurus, and major players like Donald Trump, Sean Combs, Jon Peters, and Tupac Shakur. Full of advice, opinions, and behind-the-scenes scoop, Life and Def is the story of the quintessential hip-hop life.

"Russell and I both grew up in Queens -- geographically only a few miles from each other, yet worlds apart. Life and Def is Russell's Art of the Deal, and although his route to fame and fortune could not have been more different than mine, it's an unbelievably fascinating and provocative account that I found hard to put down. Russell is a winner!"

5 out of 5 stars On Russell Simmons' Life.......2007-06-01

A great book but you should know: the Vibe Mag quote at the top "...Learn how the godfather of hip hop did it...." only applies to a small portion of the book. For a book that fulfills this promise, check out: Hip Hop Inc (Richard Oliver)

                                      4 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2007-04-18

Life and Def is a great book that shows that you can do anything if you try. This book is about Russell Simmons who lived in Queens, New York. He had an decent life and his parents were well-educated people but he still got sucked into the street life. He was a drug dealer on 205th street. He sold many different drugs though out his drug career but his main drug that he sold was marijuana. Russell Simmons was one of the first hip-hop promoters ever. He now owns big companies such as Phat Farm. He also has a share of Def Jam records and is a member of the rap group Run DMC. Russell Simmons is a remarkable person because he made something out of himself even though he made bad choices when he was a kid. I gave this book four stars because of his excellent writing as he shares the details of his childhood.

5 out of 5 stars A look at the soft side of Russell Simmons.......2006-01-18

Like you, I always thought Russell Simmons was a bigger than life, take no prisoners kind of personality. Who knew that Russell is as sensitive as Oscar Wilde and as munificient as Greg Louganis? Oh sure, he acts all tough in interviews, but this book peels away the layers and shows that Russell's heart beats just like yours and mine -- maybe more -- definitely better.

For example, did you know that Mr. Simmons was voted "Top Alto" in his high school glee club? Did you also know he was the ghost writer of "Wind Beneath My Wings"? What about the notion that Russell Simmons will never tip less than 14% -- even if the service is bad?

And what really suprised me, is that he curiously names REO Speedwagon as the band he admires the most.

I salute you Mr. Simmons and hope that this is just the first of his many, many super intelligent and unbelievably insightful self-serving books.

4 out of 5 stars Informative Guide For Hip-Hop Music Moguls.......2005-05-29

I've read this book once all throughout, and now I'm in my second reading highlighting key points Russell Simmons had made during the course of his writing.

If you are an independent rap or hiphop artist (hell, ANY independent music artist) or got plans for starting your own record label, this book is a perfect start for you.

Not that it'll give you direct information regarding how to start your own label, but it will give you an idea of what it takes to be successful out there. What it gave me, as an independent rapper myself (you can see how I choose to implement some of his points into our hip-hop blueprint by checking out my group's site, http://www.audiblemcs.com), are ideas on how to effectively market my music by laying out the Def Jam's blueprint to success.

Several points that Russell Simmons made that I believe is worth mentioning are ::

1.) How you should properly build your audience
2.) What he did to make corporate America and the mainstream to adapt to his standards, not the other way around
3.) What it is about HIS brand of hip-hop that made it so successful
4.) The importance of branding and having your own identity
5.) How he got popular as a show promoter through networking and marketing
6.) How he managed to break one of their first records, "Christmas Rappin" and used it to further their success
7.) The demise of Sugar Hill Records
8.) Why you can't really expect to get rich off selling records (he uses the concept of an album as your calling card to other money generators)
9.) Touches on how him and Rick Rubin ran Def Jam in the earlier days

...and many more valuable industry insights from the words of an established player out there.

Indeed, it does not give you everything you need to know. There are no exact figures, no exact steps on you should take, etc. But that's exactly what the music business is: you cannot copy exactly what another did and expect to succeed on your own. The point of this book is to lay out Def Jam's blueprint to success in the music industry. It is up to you to study it, figure out what it is he did that worked and didn't, and incorporate those success points into your OWN plan.

Not to mention, his 5 lessons in business is something EVERYBODY interested in doing some sort of music-related business should read. Good day.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Zzzzzzzzzzzzz............2005-03-14

At the present time I am being forced to read this book in my Honors Seminar class, and for the life of me, I cannot find why I should enjoy this book as much as my professor does. This book is incredibly boring. My eyelids are heavy and if I did not have a paper to write on this thing, I would throw it to the bottom of my bed (never to open it again) and go to sleep.

For me, this book reads like a transcribed tape. Of course it has an editor, but I really feel like I'm listening to this man talk---which is not always a bad thing. Some [read: better and more interesting] books work well that way, but not this one. This book has me wondering, "why do I care about this?" and "who are these people?" These questions signal that it is very easy for a reader to get lost in the jumble.

Wow, just writing a REVIEW of this book is making me sleepier. Read this if you must. If you have some burning desire to learn more about Russell Simmons, then enjoy.

The Luftwaffe, the most feared weapon in Hitlers arsenal, wrought havoc across the fields and skies of Europe. Colourful, devious, and driven by dreams of glory, Herman Goering was Hitlers second-in-command and mastermind behind Germanys deadliest war machinethe angels of death, the Luftwaffe. Here, for the first time is the story of the ultimate military machine and its leader, Herman Goering.

I am in total agreement with the reviewer who points out that the author, in both his choice of title and in the Preface, suggests this is more about the Luftwaffe than it is its commander - and then proceeds to tell Goering's life story.

The picture on the cover shows two Ju-87 Stukas in formation, yet in the book he gives only passing mention to the incredible exploits on the Eastern Front of that greatest Stuka pilot of them all, Hans Ulrich Rudel. In fact, there's nothing at all on leading air aces like Erich Hartmann, Gunther Ral, Gerhard Barkhorn, Walter Nowotny, Johannes Steinhoff, the flamboyant Hans-Joachim Marseille, and other such personalities. These WERE Goering's Luftwaffe.

Nor is there anything substantial in the way of aircraft development and descriptions, nor Luftwaffe glossary explaining the meaning of things like flieger [flier or pilot or airman], fuhrungsstab [ops staff], jabo [jagdbomber or fighter-bomber], etc.

It's simply another account of the life and career of Goering, a story done much better, in my opinion anyway, in any one of several other books, among which my favourite is Goring by David Irving. And if it's the Luftwaffe you're interested in, seek out The Luftwaffe, 1933-45: Strategy For Defeat by Williamson Murray. Those two together will tell most of what you wish to know about Hitler's air arm.

3 out of 5 stars It should say H. Goering and his Luftwaffe........2004-03-16

Hoyt states at the beginning of this book that there are serveral good books about Goering and that this book was about the Luftwaffe. Then he details the life of Goering and his role in the Air Service. This is more a book about Goering, than it is a book about the Luftwaffe. That stated, it is a good introductary text on Goering and his Luftwaffe.
I like Hoyt's writing, but this book was only an average read. The subject is not covered in detail. Hoyt covers the main subjects: Goering's subservience to Hitler, his promises, the poor leadership of Udet and Kesslering, the lack of long range bombers, etc. I learned a few things from this book. The reason why Sweden was not invaded had a lot to do with Goering's promises to that country. There are other interesting tidbits of info in this book. However, this book does not cover this subject in detail. Otherwise, an average read.

                                            Book Description

The dirty politics behind America's—and the world's—deadliest addiction.

Every day, the United States consumes more than 18 million barrels of oil, an amount equivalent to the daily usage of Europe and the states of the former Soviet Union combined. The majority of this oil goes into cars, trucks, and SUVs in the form of gasoline. Indeed, one barrel of oil out of every seven produced in the world is destined to fill the tanks of cars in America.

In Oil: Anatomy of an Industry, Matthew Yeomans explores the role of oil in America—from driving the US economic engine, to consolidating the US's position as unilateral superpower—and explains the American consumer's love affair with gasoline and the automobile. Along the way, Yeomans offers a brief history of gasoline: where oil comes from, how the global crude oil market works, and how the price of oil is regulated and set. Illustrated with maps and graphics, Oil spotlights the companies involved in global oil production, considering their relationships with oil-rich countries and the power they wield in the global marketplace. Finally, the book explains why a continued dependence on oil will soon inhibit America's growth and become a liability to its economy, environment, and national security—not to mention the security of hundreds of millions of others.

Like other reviewers, I found the first half an interesting history lesson about how we got to where we are concerning our dependence on oil. The remaining narrative about the abuses of the oil industry were disturbing. It will lead me to other sources and make me wonder about the morality of those leading this industry. In any event, it should be a must read for the entire family. Everyone's children should at least know the history behind the most important product on the planet. God only knows if they teach them at school!

The author did very well in the first half of the book giving the reader the historical context of oil. It's my opinion Americans are God-awful with history, or why things are the way things are. Though the book isn't billed as the "be-all-end-all" book on the history of oil, it started out as a time-condensed read on the subject; I enjoyed that.

But then the author dropped into activism. Claims and projections are made without much practical data. Rosy futures are painted in wide swaths without an mention of practical technologies or means to getting to the final destination. I skipped many pages in the second half.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book on Oil Ever!!!.......2005-12-12

I'm in the oil industry and have read many books on the subject. All this book does is summarizes "The Prize" which is the best book about the oil industry ever published. It provides nothing new or even any original insite on the subject.

This book is not an anatomy of an industry it is nothing more than this authors attempt to push his political beliefs on the reader and blame George W. Bush and his presidency for all the issues that exist in the world. Ironic part is that 99% of what he blames the Bush administration for existed long before he ever took office.

If I want to hear about how bad George Bush is I'll simply watch CNN and save my money but not buying a book like this.

FYI - I am not a republican and did not vote for George Bush.

4 out of 5 stars good, but left me wanting more.......2005-11-19

As someone who studies Middle Eastern politics, the oil industry is a very natural offshoot of the general subject. While I won't make it a point to read every book on oil out there, I feel it's important to have at the very least, a basic understanding of oil.

In many ways, Yeomans fits these needs. The book is written from a sociological perspective as well as a political perspective, so the end product is a brief, but still encompassing look at oil.

Yeomans does a fine job explaining the basics of how the oil industry came to be where it is today as well as how it currently functions. I'm sure there are other books that go into more detail, but I felt this was a good place to start.

Something I did find odd however is that while Yeomans goes to great and convincing lenghts to demonstrate how vital oil is the world economy, he includes very obvious opposition to the current Iraq war. I'm not saying that he is inherently right or wrong, it's just that it seemed unatural to include this type of political content in what was to be a description of how and why the oil industry functions. Ultimately, the book wouldn't suffer from leaving out this tangent.

Yeomans also offers his take on life beyond oil, offering what I felt to be helpful recommendations, but the final chapter just seems to end out of nowhere. I wish this last chapter were a bit longer.

Ultimately, I enjoyed the book, but will certainly read a few more books on the subject to get a better feel for it.
