Book Description
Are we trying too hard to keep the economy growing, especially now that is taking us is in such dangerous directions, not only damaged environments and depleted resources, but terrorism, too? Johnson argues that it is time to start seeking ways of letting the economy slow down gracefully, and that if this small, beautiful planet is to be a true home for our descendents, we will have to find satisfactions more in the social, emotional, and spiritual realms than the material and competitive. He points to peaceful cooperation as the key to human evolutionary success, and explores how we can begin moving in this direction now.

angels of love.......2007-04-05
Angel of hope was the first book I've read by Lurlene Mcdaniel. I have too admit it was a pretty good book. I didn't even know there was a companion to this book until i seen it on amazon. Then i started reading a bunch of Lurlene Mcdaniel books. I'm mostly hooked on the one last wish novels. I only recently got angel of hope. And it was great. Even though i cried a lot. I would highly recommend any books by Lurlene Mcdaniel.
One of the best books ever!.......2006-06-14
This has got to be one of the most inspirational, sweet, wonderful books ever. It makes me want to join Peace Corp, as I'm in the process of doing right now. Read it if you feel aimless (this, and the Bible, of course :) Read this book!!!
The Best Book I Ever Read.......2006-04-24
I have read many books but I have to say this my absolute favorite, including the 23 other Lurlene McDaniel books I've read. I couldn't put it down! It was very inspirational. My friends(who also read the book) and I plan on going on a mission trip after we finish school, but the thought would probably never have crossed our minds without first reading this book.
One of the BEST BOOKS you'll read!.......2005-05-10
Lurelene McDaniel should be very proud of all the wonderful books she has written. I loved the Journey of Hope books. I have read them many times because they are such an inspiration. If you are looking for a great book you should read this one.
A moving story.......2005-04-29
When I first brought this book, I berely had time to read it with all the work I had to do, once I had free time I began to read it and I just couldn't put it down. I thought this is very inspirational and the ending was so touching because you got to know these characters very well throughout the story. You will know what I am talking about if you read the book. After I complete the book, I just want to read it even more... I don't want it to end. All of Lurlene's books are the same, she is my favorite author and I've read most of her books already. I definitely recommend reading this one, its one of my favorites!

Book Description
This book covers the emerging area of logic computation—the use of advanced mathematical methods to solve complex problems in logic. This logic system may be used for the construction of expert systems, such as automated handwriting analysis, traffic control systems, and data mining. The topic of this book is essentially the starting point for solving these problems, i.e. ways in which a complex problem may be broken down into a number of smaller ones.

Required Reading for all students of logic computation.......1998-02-12
A serious book for those interested in algorithms to solve the 'satisfiability' and 'minimum satisfiability' problems. While mostly dealing with the theory behind Truemper's practical algorithms, the book also provides discussions of applications to major combinatorial problem classes.

Designing Your Own Tarot Spreads (Special Topics in Tarot)
ASIN: 080699505X |
Book Description
Here you'll find 122 different layouts with information on when and how to use them. Start with personal day and year cards, and learn how to relate Tarot to your own interests, in order to find specific blind spots and personal resistances, as well as how to look for new chances and unexpected directions. Then you progress to the larger and theme cards, and learn to interpret networks of cards and also "to view every card as a world by itself." You'll become acquainted with the Cycle of the Year (with 20 major layouts) and with the practice of Tarot and astrology, using the respected Golden Dawn System developed by Arthur A. Waite and Alistair Crowley. Soon you'll appreciate the variety and creativity inherent in Tarot, to see the cards as a mirror of yourself, and to discover what the authors mean when they say that "being lucky has nothing to do with luck." 192 pages, 114 b/w illus., 6 x 9.
Customer Reviews:
An ideal book to start with.......2007-07-25
This book is great for someone getting started in the tarot. It has a very quick and easy method for learning the minor arcana, and even has a very brief discussion on some of the more esoteric aspects (i.e. colors, astrological attributions, etc.). Nothing too heavy for a neophyte to get drowned in, but a very good starting point.
The book claims to have 122 or so spreads. This is a little misleading, since a few of them are "Pick a card you like, and just think about it for a while" kind of spreads. Which those are great for people trying to become more intuitive readers, but a few of them seem to be there to soak up another page.
There's a lot of great spreads here, you're bound to find a few you'll love. A number of them are for more meditative purposes, and they've got spreads that couples are meant to do together, etc.
I really walked away liking this book for what it is. For the price, its worth it. If you're a seasoned tarot reader, however, it may be less appealing.
Good Book.......2006-11-10
I bought this book along with the cards as a gift for my neice. She really enjoys giving the fmaily readings and has said the book has been very helpful. Over all, I'd have to say it was a good purchase.
Simple Spreads For The Beginner.......2004-01-07
Most of this book is filled with pictures of layouts with two or three word descriptions of the meanings of each position. When I got this book I had been studying tarot for only two months. I found that my intuitive senses seemed to dull after considering only three or four cards. I did not have the experience to comfortably interpret large spreads like the Celtic Cross. Sensing connections in such a large spread was also difficult. Enter "The Complete Book of Tarot Spreads." The layouts are mostly smaller (2-6 cards) making reading much more accessible to the beginner. Many of the layouts have several variations, and by studying the variations I began to understand how to create my own layouts.
A more experienced tarot reader now (but not that experienced), I still occasionally turn to this book for ideas on creating my own layouts but rarely use the simple layouts now. The descriptions of the positions are incrediably simple. In some cases so simple I don't even understand what they mean.
If you are a beginning student looking for simple spreads, buy this book. If you are comfortable with larger spreads like the Celtic Cross or other spreads using greater than ten cards, don't waste your money.
WHAT'S THE SENSE OF THIS BOOK.......2003-03-26
THIS BOOK HAS SOME ASTROLOGY ETC. YES THAT'S GOOD. BUT IT'S A BOOK ABOUT TAROT SPREADS.
WHERE ARE THE DETAILS FOR THE SPREADS? IF YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE PEOPLE COMPLETE TAROT SPREADS GIVE THEM MORE DETAILS ON THE SPREADS. NOT JUST PAST-PRESENT-FUTURE OR 1-2-3. WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE PAST POSITION REALLY MEANS, ETC. EVEN ONE LINE WOULD DO. ANYONE COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS BOOK. JUST THINK OF SOME CATCHY NAMES FOR THE POSITIONS, NOT KNOWING WHAT THEY MEAN AND YOU'VE GOT THIS BOOK. AND OH, WHY HAVE THEY GIVEN US THE CELTIC CROSS SPREAD IN ABOUT TEN VARIATIONS AND CALLED IT 10 SPREADS WHEN IT'S JUST 1 SPREAD WHERE THE CARDS CAN BE INTERPRETED DIFFERENTLY?
I GAVE IT TWO STARS FOR THE ASTROLOGY PART. PLEASE WORK ON THE SPREADS AND GET BACK TO US WITH A REVISED EDITION. IF IT'S AS PRACTICAL AS THE ASTROLOGY PART PEOPLE WILL BUY IT.
Not mindblowing, but handy.......2002-12-26
This book didn't have quite the range of spreads that I'd hoped, but I did expect that when I bought it and I wasn't sorry. I won't comment on the introductory segments on numerology, astrology, or general card theory, as I largely skipped over that (although I suppose that's worthy of comment in itself). As some other reviewers have mentioned, of the 120 (or however many) spreads that there are in this book, a very large number of them are one, two, and three card spreads. I tend to make up my own spreads, often on the fly, so what I've found useful about this book is that both the simplistic and complex spreads give me different ideas or angles to use when I create my own spreads. To date, I've used this book to avoid getting into a rut in the way I define my cards, and I've used it to get inspiration for new spreads of my own. Quite frankly, I could get a lot of the same information browsing the web for spreads, but it's much more convenient for me to have a nice little collection that I can keep in the same place as my cards, plus it saves me the footwork.
In summary, this is an inexpensive book that I'd recommend for anyone with moderate expections looking for ideas or inspiration, but this book will definately not present you 100 new fancy spreads that you've never heard of before.

Book Description
Dexter Scott King's disarmingly candid memoir of growing up in the shadow of his father is now in trade paperback. Seven-year-old Dexter Scott King was in his family's den watching television when a special news bulletin announced that his father, Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr., had been shot in Memphis. While the nation and the world mourned the death of one of the most important and powerful figures in history, the young son began what would be a lifelong personal journey of not only learning to cope with the loss of his loving father, but of exploring how best to make sure that his message and spirit lived on. Remarkably honest and emotionally intimate, this book offers a rare and touching look into what it is like to grow up as the son of a world renowned hero.
Download Description
Dexter King, who would grow up to eerily resemble his legendary father, MLK, Jr., and display some of the same eloquence, was seven years old when an assassin's bullet took his father's life. The bond between father and son was a close one. For years afterward, Dexter was haunted by a memory of himself and his dad riding their bikes through Atlanta's streets, and by his father's full-throated laugh as he romped with the King children. Dexter tried to find courage in his father's example of selfless heroism, but as his shattered childhood ripened into adolescence, the weight of "the King legacy" pressed down ever more heavily.Kept at arms-length by schoolchildren who weren't sure what to make of the son of a secular saint, afflicted with undiagnosed ADD, and shell-shocked further by the assassination of his grandmother, Dexter stumbled warily into adulthood. Ironically, the wall that separated him from potential friends and girlfriends was sometimes comforting. In distancing himself from others, he lessened the chances of loss.Only in his early 30s did he confront "the legacy" head on, and when he did, he discovered what his father was trying to tell him-and us-about what really matters. Replete with remarkable insights into what families of "fallen heroes" must contend with, as well as surprisingly intimate moments and fresh reflections on race in America, this is a truly extraordinary book.
Customer Reviews:
F FOR FANTASTIC.......2006-12-02
I absolutely loved this book. I read it awhile back and it was a well written book. It's a very moving and lovely story about ML KING JRS second son growing up, and it also tells about his family and the King Center. I rate it 5 stars since it is such a fantastic book. A must read for ML KING JR fans. For those of you who would like a good book about ML KING JRS family, and the King Center, this is a must have.
Still Growing.......2004-08-19
Dexter Scott King's memoir accounts for the tremendous history of the King family and his life as the physically favoring, second son of Martin Luther King, Jr. Through the story of his life, Dexter answers the questions many Americans have about the last 34 years: Where did the dream go? What happened to the King family? What finally happened in the assassination case? Dexter Scott King describes the aftermath of the civil rights movement and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr....his father.
Growing Up King allows you to look back at the last thirty years with clarity. Dexter King is reflective and honest, humble and dutiful. He is a man without a calling, called to be that man. He reveal his earliest childhood memories of loving family life and also the tolls of his father's work. He sheds a unique perspective on events that changed history, and evokes respect for all who supported the survival of his family. He openly shares personal memoirs, and modestly describes his influence on the King Center and other social and political projects.
The private access to the King family is refreshing, as Dexter provides up-to-date reports about his mother, Coretta, his oldest sister Yolanda, his older brother Martin and his younger sister Bernice. Their stories, and those of cousins, uncles, and grandparents describe an American saga of love, dedication, commitment and strength. Dexter also discloses the intricacies of the assassination case and resolutions thus far. Growing Up King connects the present to the past, the next generation to the dream.
Dexter's tone in Growing Up King is as natural as a journal: generally chronological, informative, and quite intimate. If anything, we readers see that the second son of America's greatest social and political leader still has some growing up to do. His attitude is of one who has gotten the bad end of the stick, one who does not yet truly believe in his own power, whether in his own light or his father's shadow. There seems always the unattainable quest to be great in his own right, to find his own dream. By reading Growing Up King I realize, Dexter Scott King has not only lived up to his family name, he has allowed the dream to live on.
Very Insightful Read.......2004-01-13
This was a very insightful read for me. No, this is not a story about Martin Luther King, Jr .. it's about living the life as Martin Luther King, Jr's child. It reveals the ups and downs of being born to a public figure such as the late GREAT Martin Luther King, Jr. Dexter does a pretty good job of showing us the hurdles he and his family have had to cross. I think it's good for people to read, because you get to see what the family members are faced with (a sort of behind the scenes glance at being in the shadow of one's famous father). Dexter also gives you insight on The King Center. I recommend this read to all people. Teachers and professors should also have this book on their list of student required reads.

Routine autobiography, nothing new to add to the King aura.......2003-05-19
This is NOT a story about Martin Luther King, Jr...But then again, it is! With such an imposing aura and legendary persona that Martin possesses even in death, it would be extremely hard for anyone trying to extract meaningful context without him playing a prominent role to analyze anything for or against it. GROWING UP KING is Dexter Scott King's story. He being the youngest of Martin's four children, sets out to give revelations for the first time what it was like growing up within the huge monolithic shadow of greatness, and how his fathers' maxims continue to inspire and inform his own ideas on race matters. I would imagine amid the aura of being a member of such a prominent family it would behoove one to set a sustained agenda to carve a preferred path. With this book, you'd think that definitions would be finally told in the first person. I wanted to be rational as I read this book and try not to compare the Martin of yesteryear to what his offspring needed to bring forth. But to do this, I knew I had to do so with an open mind. Thus, I read it with mixed emotion, and tried to be objective in attaining a reasonable view to support the author's intent, and more importantly, to see if certain truths would come forth to quell rumor, and set the record straight on a multitude of issues. Most notably the controversy surrounding The King Center for Non-Violent Social Change.
I came away with a feeling of loss, as if something truly was missing that wasn't said that should have been. I kept looking for reasons to give standing ovations to a member of this family who had the courage to give insight to all questions the public wanted answered. For those looking for insight that hasn't been before public domain, there may be something that Dexter espouses that may warrant merit. File this one on the shelf with the rest of the books written about the King family legacy. I rate this book above average, but still worthy of a read if nothing more than to give chance to this scion who endeavor to be his own man.
MOVING BEYOND THE SHADOW.......2003-05-03
The progeny of great men and women are usually compared to their venerable parent. Such is the case in the Martin Luther King, Jr. family. Since his death a microscope has been placed over his children comparing them to him. Dexter, the second son and third child of King attempts to break out of the shadow of his father and reveals to us his hopes, dreams and aspirations for himself and his family. Dexter's text is a good try but fails in its efforts.
Growing Up Kings gives the reader the perspective of a child raised in the Martin Luther King, Jr. family. Dexter reveals the challenges that he faced in living under the shadow of a famous father. We as readers are shown the stresses and pressures put upon the family as they faced tragedy after tragedy but continued on with the dream as articulated by King. Dexter does a fair job in sharing with us some of his family's personal matters but is very restrained in critiquing the actions of his mother and other civil rights icons.
As you walk through the narrative, you will find Dexter repeating himself and giving the reader a history of the civil rights movement. He shares his foibles but was again there is a restraint in his revelations. Just how much is Dexter telling us that is true? Our author seems to never be able to stand on his own two feet without invoking the shadow of the King family over his life.
The best part of the book is his explanation regarding the safeguarding of M.L.K Jr.'s speeches and intellectual property that is not in the public domain. You will learn that there is another side to the story and Dexter tells it well. You also receive a bit of insight regarding the functionairies of the King Center and how Dexter chose to resign his position as president rather than become a puppet.
Like many people I was attracted to this book due to the nature of its contents. Who wouldn't want to know what it is like growing up under Martin Luther King, Jr.? Dexter's story was interesting but lacked a greater depth in terms of his own vision for the future beyond his family. He appeared to be trapped in the King mystique although he tried to become his own man. The book neglected any full scale treatment of his relationships with his mother and siblings. Yes, he throws tidbits concerning his failed love relationships but those appear to be mere diversions to keep up your interest. In general we are given a decent perspective of the King family.Hopefully a more definitive portrait of the family will come from the rest of his siblings.

Indispensible for the medieval/ancient figure painter.......2005-09-21
I became hooked on miniature figure modelling and painting when I received a 54mm St. Petersberg Roman miniature about six months ago as a gift. Since then, I have discovered a wonderful, relaxing new hobby: figure painting.
As a life-long medieval history enthusiast, I found Armstrong's book to be a great addition to my modest but growing miniature modelling library. While it is true that Armstrong's subject matter is fairly limited to the 13th and 14th centuries in England and Scotland, that is the "sweet spot" of my subject interest. Plus, the principles he relays are transferable - such as a mini-introduction to painting, sculpting and diorama building.
If anything else, you will learn some very cool techniques on creating realistic 13th c. castle walls, textured stones and all!
Well worth the price and the time.
Finally a modelling book that is not about WW 2.......2003-03-12
Excellent book. Well documented and well written. A must own for anyone who wants to expand beyond trolls and Nazis.
Good review of techniques, limited subject matter.......2002-08-20
Armstrong is an accomplished modeler and figure manufacturer. The book has a focus on British Medieval figures with much discussion on heraldry for that area. Other parts of the medieval world are given scant attention.
He demonstrates many techniques for building both metal figures and scenes to place them in. His techniques for building castle sections for figure displays was very interesting. He does not discuss painting techniques much except for burnishing and polishing armor.
All in all a good reference for those wishing to model British medieval subjects.

Book Description
As president, Jimmy Carter was renowned for abandoning Washington protocol. Ousting presidential pomp and circumstances and elitism, he banished the presidential limousines and carried his own bags. Following his political convictions, he saw himself as a public trustee, determined to play a dominant role in government and undertake a number of bold initiatives. In the process, argues Burton Kaufman, he tried to do too much too quickly in foreign and domestic policy and ignored political process regardless of the consequences.
Despite being considerate, compassionate, well informed, and one of the nation's most intelligent presidents, Carter was at best a mediocre president and at worst the head of a failed administration, Kaufman contends. He came to the White House long on intentions but short on know-how, Kaufman maintains, and although he worked diligently to win support for his policies and programs, he failed to establish the base of public and political legitimacy he needed to be a successful trustee president.
Although some revisionists are now suggesting Carter's contemporary critics misjudged the administration or applied unfair standards in evaluating Carter's presidency, Kaufman believes the original evaluations were essentially correct. Unlike those revisionists' writings, The Presidency of James Earl Carter, Jr., is based on newly available files and papers in the Carter Library.
Concentrating on the major issues of the Carter administration, including arms control, the energy crisis, inflation, affirmative action, and the Iranian hostage crisis, Kaufman illustrates how this complex, inconsistent, and often contradictory president never adequately articulated an overarching purpose and direction for his administration.
This book is part of the American Presidency Series.

Carter as he was, mostly failure but some major successes.......2002-04-28
Several years ago, a young co-worker asked me about Jimmy Carter and my response was that he was a much better ex-president than he was a president. His subsequent work in areas such as Habitat for Humanity as well as international relations has been excellent. He has served as a goodwill ambassador, election monitor and has negotiated several international agreements that favored the United States. He has also continued to be a champion of human rights causes throughout the world.
Contrasting his success after his presidency with his performance while in office demonstrates the reasons why his presidency is generally assigned a mediocre grade. His idealism in championing human rights was the most obvious example of the truism that idealism may help get you elected, but it gets in the way of governing effectively. In the age of the cold war and international tensions, a cold, heartless pragmatism seems to be the only thing that works.
I found Kaufman's explanations of the Carter presidency to be the most even-handed and honest that I have read. Carter made many mistakes, had some made for him and in other cases was just the victim of circumstances. Nevertheless, he did have some striking successes, the two most notable being the Camp David accords between Israel and Egypt and the treaty relinquishing the Panama canal. In these events, Carter showed how much potential he really had as a president. I remember when the networks pre-empted their regular programming as Carter, Sadat and Begin came back from Camp David with the agreement in hand. It was a stunning achievement and it amazed the world. The magic of that moment is captured in the book, as well as the subsequent problems that continue to plague the region. Despite all the violence in the area of Palestine and Lebanon in the years since the accords were signed, the fact that Israel and Egypt still continue to have formal relations and are at peace show how sturdy those agreements are.
As someone who lived through those years and followed the Carter presidency in great detail, reading this book brought back a great deal of memories. Without attempting to boast, I do have an excellent memory, and the recounting of the events are all exactly as I remember them.
The author closes with a very important and often overlooked point. Carter's presidency is considered a failure, and yet he refused to negotiate away anything in order to release the hostages in Iran. Reagan's presidency is considered a success and yet he attempted a bribe for the release of the hostages in Lebanon by selling armaments to Iran. There is no doubt that on that point, Carter bests Reagan.
I would like to close this review with a personal point. Yes, Carter's pushing of human rights did create problems. But, when you consider that some of those whose rights were being violated, Walesa in Poland and Havel in the Czech Republic, rose to the leadership of their nations, perhaps he was just ahead of his time.
