It's tempting to write off The Lost River as just another adventure story. It certainly has all the trappings of a formulaic action blockbuster--raging rapids, hungry crocodiles, mysterious natives, even the lost Ark of the Covenant. But as veteran river-runner Richard Bangs chronicles his lifelong pursuit of "aqua incognita," he proves a refreshingly introspective adventurer, a thinking man's Indiana Jones. Not content to justify his risky forays onto earth's wildest water with a glib "because it's there," he crafts an intimate journal of his astounding trips and scrutinizes the adventure travel industry he helped create.
With a ragtag band of friends and smuggled equipment, Bangs sets out in 1973 to run Ethiopia's untried rivers. But revolution and the tragic death of a friend cause him to quit the country without running the Tekeze, one of Africa's most fearsome tributaries. When he returns to run the virgin river in 1996, the Internet revolution is dawning, and Microsoft (via satellite uplink) and the Turner Corporation (via a ride-along film crew) are among his travel companions. Such fascinating historical contexts might easily have been reduced to Forrest Gump-ish window dressing for Bangs's journeys. Instead, he makes them integral to his story, using anecdotal encounters with Candice Bergen, Haile Selassie, and even Richard (Shaft) Roundtree to gently steep readers in the history of Ethiopia.
As they encounter ecosystems and peoples making first contact with Westerners, Bangs and his companions also explore the ethical and ecological ramifications of adventure travel. But rather than preach a certain course of action, he judiciously presents the various arguments for "conservation" and "progress" and lets readers draw their own conclusions. Though lacking the stylistic verve that Mark Twain or Joseph Conrad bring to the river story, Bangs is clearly a kindred spirit, with lessons well worth pondering and incredible stories to tell. --Andrew Nieland
Book Description
In the early 1970s, in a quest to run the last unexplored rivers of Africa, two young men drowned: one a client on his first river expedition; the other, author Richard Bangs's rafting partner and best friend, Lew Greenwald. Bangs and Greenwald, who had pioneered several wild rivers in Africa, shared a goal to raft Ethiopia's unrun Tekeze, but Greenwald's death and political turmoil made the dream impossible.
Twenty-three years later, Bangs returned with survivors of the earlier expeditions to complete what was left undone - to run the Tekeze. The Lost River is the story of Bangs's mission to fulfill a promise, to close a circle, and to face the ghosts of tragedy. It is also a deeply personal story as Bangs recounts his beginnings on wild rivers, the relationships forged in pursuit of adventure, and the primal joys that come from exploring uncharted territory.
Customer Reviews:
Really good reading.......2006-04-23
I haven't had so much fun in a long time. I wanted to go up and down the river with this one. I found it interesting and challenging too. Good book.
I want to run rivers.......2001-05-27
Having navigated only a few rivers, none of them virgin, my interest was piqued when a former boss of mine told me about this guy Richard Bangs she knows. So I ... read the reviews, ...Suffice it to say I sat down with the book in hand, looked up roughly three hours later, and noticed I finished the book. The last book I recall which captivated me so was Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground.
In any event, the narrative is always fascinating if the prose is somewhat heavy-handed or purple at points.
Lost River.......2001-01-18
Richard Bangs and his Sobek rafting company were clearly the early trend setters in world-wide adventure travel. Those who enjoyed other books by Bangs including River Gods and Riding the Dragon's Back will enjoy this first-hand account of Bangs's early development as a world-class rafter including his teen adventures on the Potomac, his first summer working on the Colorado as a swamper and finally a guide through the Grand, and his first major first descent of the Omo River in Ethiopia. It was the Omo trip, which cost the members a total of $1400, where Sobek beat a well-financed National Geographic expedition by three months to what was then billed as the Mt. Everest of Whitewater, a distinction many now bestow on the Tsangpo in Tibet.
The first 2/3 of the book are well-written and include Sobek's tragic initial commercial trip ending with a client death in the first major rapid and later the death of Lee Greenwald, who Bangs met as a client on one of his Colorado trips. Greenwald had provided the financial backing to get the fledgling Sobek company off the ground, and became an accomplished river-runner under the mentorship of Bangs and one of his closest friends.
The book builds towards a climax of the much-anticipated exploratory descent of the Tekeze, a trip Bangs had promised to do with Greenwald two decades earlier and one he must complete to bring closure to Greenwald's premature death, but here the book begins to fall a little flat. The account of the Tekeze expedition reads more like a sequence of daily journal entries that could have used a bit more editing and the writing itself takes a slight downhill turn. There are daily accounts of setting up the satellite phone to transmit reports back to Microsoft's Mungo Park online travel magazine which Bangs was hired to create. For some reason, Bangs turns to language he must feel required to use to match the technology he is using and some of his phrases are a bit heavy handed:
...the tail of the wet season has made every tree and shrub burst into hectic leaf... it feels like we're in an oversized diorama, or the middle of an IMAX film--everything is exaggerated, the colors more brilliant than enhanced photos, or HDTV."
"...and every night I have slept fitfully, as though the night currents were arching through my cerebellum, conducting bytes and bits or worried thought."
"I contemplate pulling out my Minolta for a parting shot but instead grab my DC50 Kodak digital camera..."
Although the adventure aspects of the trip do not live up to the hype the reader anticipates, the story of Bangs coming to closure with the death of Greenwald provides a thread that keeps the story interesting.
While the book does not hold the reader with the drama of Into Thin Air or the Perfect Storm, as promised on the dust jacket, it is a revealing and deeply personal account of the joys and sorrows that come from modern exploration of uncharted territory. The book is a must-read for anyone who has enjoyed previous books by Bangs and those interested in the development of modern adventure travel, exploratory boaters, and those who want to learn how Sobek came to be.
The Lost River.......1999-12-20
When I first heard that Richard Bangs had written another book I immediately ran to. I figured that I would read it over a two week period. After work on a Friday night I picked it up and started reading.
Within three pages "The Lost River" grabbed me and when I looked up it was 3:30AM. I didn't want to stop reading, but I had a lot to do the next day, so I headed straight to bed. In the morning I decided to read some more and by 2:00 in the afternoon, I was making phone calls to cancel my appointments so I could finish the book, which I did by 6:00 that evening.
This story is one that will stick with me for a long time. It is not only a wonderful adventure story about how he and his partners started Sobek, his rafting company, it is also an intensly personal self examination by Mr. Bangs. He dives deep into his own feelings. Ultimately, he triumphs over these feelings and by bringing the reader along this journey with him he teaches the value of good friends, the hope of great visions and the catharsis of confronting your past, head on. This is one of the great adventure stories of all time, but for me, it also served as a "self help" book. You'll be amazed and entertained by a fabulous story while going through your own internal exam at the same time.
What a superb book..........1999-11-09
I enjoyed the book tremendously. At times, I could even visualise the thrilling, dangerous and frightening moments down those wild rivers. I shall now look forward to the documentary.

Customer Reviews:
SEATS: NEW YORK 2ND EDITION HITS THE SHELVES.......2002-11-22
Following in my father's footsteps, SEATS : NEW YORK has arrived in a new, updated second edition. SEATS is your guide to the best SEATs in the house and features: 150 Seating plans to New York metro area theatres, concert halls, and sports stadiums with SEATS pricing guide. It also includes: "insider" tips on locating the best SEATS at the best discount prices, detailed maps of the SEATS Theatre districts around NYC, user-friendly directions and transportation information to get you to your SEATS, parking locations convenient to your venue and four seasons of FREE SEATS around the town. All this information is compiled into a nice pocket-size format which is a must for every theatre-goer. As Mayor Bloomberg says: "So be sure to consult your SEATS guide and enjoy the show!"
It's about time theater goers were given some consideration.......1999-01-25
With all the "waste of time and ink" publishers are inflicting on the reading public, it's about time that a publisher has released a book that makes sense. SEATS explains clearly how to buy theater tickets at discount prices, some at the unbelievable price of $3. I tried it and it really works. The seating plans are unbelievable! I ordered my tickets from Ticketmaster and the salesman mumbled, "oh, Seats again," when I told him exactly what I wanted. I could tell from the colors where to find the best values. Horay for Sandy Millman, Seats is a brilliant idea.
A very useful tool,well presented information.......1998-12-29
The book provides an opportunity to check a theatre and know something more about the location of your seats than just a stub number in an easy to use design.

Book Description
Well, in summary, your fake date's in the bathroom with a hangover and a crispy hairdo, while my fake date is out wandering the Willard, searching for his heterosexuality or something.
High school senior Cameron Hayes gets coerced into going to the prom with a girl, even though he'd rather be with his boyfriend. The evening goes from bad to worse when his fake date gets sloshed, his boyfriend slugs him when he sees Cam kissing his fake date, and Cam flees the prom in disguise with a drug dealer. Then things really spin out of control. Over the course of one harrowing and hysterical night, Cameron's life comes undone, leading to accidental revelations, criminal adventures, and an unlikely romance.
Brian Sloan's madcap romp is a hilarious take on a teenage rite of passage -- with a decided twist.
Customer Reviews:
Twelve Hours of Hilarious Serendipity.......2006-10-25
Brian Sloan may just be one of the better writers of comedy to come around in a long time. He manages to take a 'normal high school prom' situation and turn out a comedy of errors, of social faux pas, of class distinctions, of teenage drug and alcohol abuse, and of gay coming out stories and combine them in a page turner laugh riot that is one of the best reads around. Sort of an Augusten Burroughs dealing with normal people!
The story is literally twelve hours of a prom night attended (among others, of course) by two closeted gay boyfriends and their girl friend dates, an evening which manages to unmask everyone's foibles and secrets, lead to flaming hairdos, Russian drug dealers, police raids, and eventually a resolution to a courtship between two mismatched men that provides a world of lessons.
Sloan narrates the story as seventeen-going-on-eighteen Cameron Hayes and makes him so visual and witty and vulnerable that we can't help but love the kid and stay with him, delightedly entertained, until the very last page. There are moments when the contemporary teen language becomes a bit excessive: there are other more serious problems with Sloan's inappropriately poor grammar. But the overall result is galloping romp through that 'night of nights' when high school seniors (especially ones of wealth) toss convention to the winds of hormonal explosion and the fireworks are stunning! Grady Harp, October 06
A tale about honesty.......2006-10-02
"A Really Nice Prom Mess" revolves around graduating Senior Cameron Hayes attept to go to the prom with his boyfriend Shane, a football player deeply in the closet. To achieve this romantic goal he is set up on a date with a wild, out-of-control girl who soon catches on to his secret scheme. Things go from bad to worse to insanity in the course of one evening as Cameron gets beat up, goes on the run with a drug dealer, ends up dancing at a local DC Gay Bar, and learns what it is to be an honest gay man true to his friends and himself.
Dispite a goofy title, this book was vary enjoyable overall. It captures nicely the confusion and frustrations of young love well, and the author has a knack for creating interestingly mismatched characters. Even when the action of the story gets a little too out-of-whack and unbelievable it is still a good quick read for a lazy afternoon. At 25, I feared this would be one of those gay teen novels that makes me feel like a wierdo oversexualizing underage highschoolers, but Sloan does a good job making the story sexy without making it salacious. This book does contain drug & Alchohol use and sexual situations, but it's prom night after all so what did you expect?! This book will remind many of us what it was like growing up gay in High School, and the things we did to get through it.
Laugh out Loud Funny-A must read!!.......2006-06-06
A really nice prom mess was one of the funniest books I have ever read.
Cameron's misadventures on prom night are hilarious. He seriously has the worst prom ever. This is a highly unrealistic story but it is such a fun read. From Dmitri the drug dealer bi-sexual Russian to Virginia McKinley the wild party girl to Buck-the gay deaf stripper the characeters are all so likable and funny.
This book is like all those teenage prom movies (She's All That, Drive Me Crazy etc.) with a little twist.
I could not put this book down and definitely recommend it to anyone!
A riot!.......2005-08-10
Very funny book. I read it at work one day and I was literally laughing out loud in some spots. I definitely reccommend this!
Very Enjoyable Quick Read.......2005-07-17
Very, enjoyable, quick read. Perfect for summer beach or pool reading. A gay teen's adventures, and misadventures, on his prom night. Imagine John Hughes doing a gay teen angst movie and you can visualize this story. If there is any shortcoming in this story, it is that the author tries to stuff too many events in to too short a time. Yes, when things go bad they can really go bad, but let's be realistic here.

Double stains are double tricky.......2002-01-18
The authors who do not seem comfortable in writing long books in English have produced a handy short treatise and protocol collection about an arcane subject. A significant oversight is the problem of performing RNA in situ hybridization when commercial antibodies contain appreciable amounts of RNAases. The Dutch histoimmunologists have captured the field from the English and this book is proof of the fact.

Book Description
In these notes we study time-dependent partial differential equations and their numerical solution. The analytic and the numerical theory are developed in parallel. For example, we discuss well-posed linear and nonlinear problems, linear and nonlinear stability of difference approximations and error estimates. Special emphasis is given to boundary conditions and their discretization. We develop a rather general theory of admissible boundary conditions based on energy estimates or Laplace transform techniques. These results are fundamental for the mathematical and numerical treatment of large classes of applications like Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows, two-phase flows and geophysical problems.

Book Description
What Diane Wilson reveals about the inner workings of the closed Watchtower Society will shock the average person who assumes the polite, well-dressed people who pass out leaflets are much like any other conservative religious group. Wilson contends that membership in the Jehovah's Witnesses demands obedience bordering on psychological enslavement and complete suppression of individuality--yet prohibits the questioning of the teachings of the Watchtower Society.
Her engrossing first-hand account will be of great interest to former Witnesses, students of cult phenomena, anyone who has ever experienced an abusive relationship, those who want to learn more about what compels people to enter this group, and all who have ever had contact with Jehovah's Witnesses.
Customer Reviews:
Review from a JW.......2007-09-25
I read some of this book a while back for only one reason. My mom knew Diane, because SHE was in OUR Santa Clara South congregation. Do you know where ALL those people that Diane talks about in her book are? They are out of the truth! Yes, ironic as it may seem, most of the witnesses in the congregation that Diane was in are not even Jehovah's witnesses anymore! It just goes to show that Jehovah takes care of his organization when there are bad seeds in the congregation, hyprocritical and demanding, unreasonable people as are mentioned in her book. Well they are all gone. I'm in that same congregation today and if anyone was to compare them to the one back then, they would see a dramatic transformation. The utter opposite.
It is a shame to cut off ones relationship with Jehovah God because of imperfect people that may seep into the congregation. But Jehovah always makes sure to cleanse his organization from such ones. My mom suffered an ulcer from these people pressuring her but she trusted in Jehovah, not allowing them to tear her relationship with God. Today she has so much blessings and has experienced proof of God's spirit.
Diane goes and blames the society because of these people's problems, people that were unable themselves to stay in the truth. No man has a right to judge but Jehovah--time and time again I have heard this all my life in meetings and articles by the Watchtower. These people who judged are no longer there.
Also Jehovah's witnesses don't even believe in hell, pergertory, which other people of religions may be in constant fear of; and they dont ever bear arms like Christendom. There have been more wars in the name of religion, and none of these wars did Jehovahs witnesses ever partake in.
This organization is not a cult because they dont follow a man leader, they follow the teachings of Jesus only. Cults generally don't survive either, but this organization has been growing year by year. They don't "control minds," they reccommend you read the bible on your own everyday, and they offer evidence from the scriptures and allow you to ask questions, unlike some churches where people can't even ask the pastors question, let alone get to know them. The witnesses are against self-condemning thoughts and feeling guilty when their is already repentance, their main concern is to encourage and build up. Ask the majority of Jehovah's witnesses who have not allowed a couple of self-righteous individuals to tear them down. You need to see Jehovahs witnesses as a whole, not for a tiny handful of bad seeds. The majority spent hours across the entire globe preaching the good news of the kingdom (which is fulfilling the prophecy at Mattew 24:14, the only religion who have) only because of love for neighbor and God and nothing else. They don't get paid, their not controlled, they really want to. I should know as I have been a Jehovah's witness all my life and the last thing I know they would do is try and manipulate. This book is just an emotional spew and she just let irrational people make her irrational.
I know my review will not be 'helpful' to those anti-JWs out there but among all other reviews for this book this is the most helpful regardless, because i know the facts.
Must read for all ex-JWs.......2007-06-12
Would be great if all JWs would read this, but that's not going to happen. A great validation for an ex-JW!
AN OUTSTANDING ENTRY IN THIS GENRE!.......2006-12-12
The publishers of this book are well named, for they bring to us the Sacred Fire, just as the Prometheus of Myth did. I've read every book written by former Jehovah's Witnesses, but this one is the most engrossing and well-written. It's also the most challenging to the world-view of all Biblical literalists. Only one other book, Jehovah Unmasked, has done as good a job. That's a tremendous compliment to this book! Prometheus does not give us yet another "My life moved inexorably toward Jesus once I left the JW sect" book. Very refreshing. An excellent read.
Read I WAS A TEENAGE JEHOVAH'S WITNESS and JEHOVAH UNMASKED for two of the wildest rides ever!
Eyes Wide Open Now!.......2006-08-14
I have a publication from the Watchtower Society called "The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life". On pg. 13 it counsels, "We need to examine, not only what we personally believe, but also what is taught by any religious organization with which we may be associated. If we are lovers of the truth, there is nothing to fear from such an examination." So I decided to put the Watchtower Society itself to this test. Jehovah's Witnesses seem to be so fearful of Ms. Wilson's book, that I read it to see what the stir was all about. And I am so glad I did! I think JWs are so against Awakening of a Jehovah's Witness because it reveals shocking information about the Watchtower that JWs would prefer to ignore. This book is not a book of allegations--it is a book of facts. It is also the author's personal experiences while a JW for 25 years. And it backs up its statements about the Watchtower with quotes (including page numbers)from the Watchtower's own publications. Like for example the Watchtower's instruction to its women to act respectfully to one's own rapist! And the book makes clear how crazy-making the Society's doctrinal contradictions are. I am grateful for this well-written book, which has opened my eyes so I can at last see this religious organization for the manmade cult that it is.

Book Description
Across the globe, the domain of the litigator and the judge has radically expanded, making it increasingly difficult for those who study comparative and international politics, public policy and regulation, or the evolution of new modes of governance to avoid encountering a great deal of law
and courts. In On Law, Politics, and Judicialization, two of the world's leading political scientists present the best of their research, focusing on how to build and test a social science of law and courts.
Chosen empirical settings include the United States, the GATT-WTO, France and Germany, Imperial China and Islam, the European Union, and the transnational world of the Lex Mercatoria.

Book Description
The Law Lords in `Factortame' based their acceptance of the supremacy of European Community law on an 'entirely voluntary' surrender of sovereignty by Parliament. This interdisciplinary study tells the story, from the parliamentary perspective, of how Parliament's sovereignty came to be lost. It charts the evolution of MPs' constitutional understandings by analyzing the parliamentary debates on UK attempts to join the Community, the passage of the 1972 Act and the approval of subsequent Treaty revisions. The book's pervasive theme is the transformation from a UK constitution based on politics to one based increasingly on law. It assesses the extent to which MPs understood that EC membership entailed a shift in power from legislature to courts. This is a study with profound implications for the legitimacy of Parliament as a law-making body. The book also offers two comparisons. First the understandings of British MPs are contrasted with those of Irish parliamentarians, to establish whether Ireland's more law-based constitutional culture had an effect on politicians' understandings of EC implications. Secondly, the book analyses the history of the Bill of Rights debate culminating in the passage of the Human Rights Act 1998, to investigate whether (and why) themes of parliamentary sovereignty and judicial empowerment were clearer in this context than in the EC context.

Book Description
During the last two decades the judiciary has come to play an increasingly important political role in Latin America. Constitutional courts and supreme courts are more active in counterbalancing executive and legislative power than ever before. At the same time, the lack of effective citizenship rights has prompted ordinary people to press their claims and secure their rights through the courts. This collection of essays analyzes the diverse manifestations of the judicialization of politics in contemporary Latin America, assessing their positive and negative consequences for state-society relations, the rule of law, and democratic governance in the region. With individual chapters exploring Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, it advances a comparative framework for thinking about the nature of the judicialization of politics within contemporary Latin American democracies.
