Book Description
Is ecology in the process of becoming the object of our contemporary passions, in the same way that Fascism was in the 30s, or Communism under Stalin? In The New Ecological Order, Luc Ferry offers a penetrating critique of the ideological roots of the "Deep Ecology" movement spreading throughout Germany, France, and the United States.
Traditional ecological movements, or "democratic ecology," seek to protect the environment of human societies; they are pragmatic and reformist. But another movement has become the refuge both of nostalgic counterrevolutionaries and of leftist illusions. This is "deep ecology." Its followers go beyond practical critiques of human greed and waste: they call into question the very possibility of human coexistence with nature. The human species is no longer at the center of the world, but subject to a new god called Nature. For these purists, man can only soil the harmony of the universe. In order to secure natural equilibrium, the only solution is to grant rights to animals, to trees, and to rocks.
Ferry launches his critique by examining early European legal cases concerning the status and rights of animals, including a few notorious cases where animals were brought to trial, found guilty, and publicly hanged. He then demonstrates that German Romanticism embraced certain key ideas of the deep ecology movement concerning the protection of animals and the environment. Later adopted by the Nazis, many of these ideas point to a profoundly antihumanistic component of deep ecology that is compatible with totalitarianism.
Ferry shows how deep ecology casts aside all the gains of human autonomy since the Enlightenment. He deciphers the philosophical and political assumptions of a movement that threatens to infantalize human society by preying on the fear of the authority of a new theological-political order. Far from denying our "duty in relation to nature," The New Ecological Order offers a bracing caution—against the dangers of environmental claims and, more important, against the threat to democracy contained in the deep ecology doctrine when pushed to its extreme.
"A book of intellectual power, full of insights, invention, and not without temerity, from one of the best political philosophers today."—Le Figaro
"Few books have analyzed in depth this phenomenon of the ecological movement as the most recent book by Luc Ferry has done. . . . It is a book that absolutely must be read."—Le Point

A Study in Anti-Humanism.......2006-08-14
This book deals with one of the most important issues facing modern man: the threat posed to humanism by various so-called progressive movements. This is part of Ferry's ongoing project to expose the illiberal consequences of what is regularly called post-modernity. (See his book on the Sixties as an essay on anti-humanism, and his statement on why he is not a Nietzschean). Some of the practical issues discussed are the crucial distinctions between conservation and radical environmentalism; between anti-cruelty and animal rights. The link between fascism in its most anti-humanist incarnation (Nazism) and "animal rights" should be studied - once animals have the rights of man, man is placed on par with animals. It is no coincidence those carted off to Auschwitz and the eastern camps were sent in cattle cars. These chapters on Nazi animal rights legislation, and the other progressive initiatives of that regime, is fascinating and important especially in light of contemporary European tendencies like the great ape project, support for euthanasia and other progressive ideas - like smoking bans. This is one of the best popular books around to explain the formal and theoretical connection between these seemingly unrelated ideas.
A thoughtful and moderate defense of democratic humanism........2003-12-30
...Ferry sees deep ecology (or what Americans would call deep ecology) as fundamentally at odds with democracy. Essentially, we may read his critique as claiming that, while democracy incorporates an open-ended dialogue over the good, deep ecology promotes a singular vision of what is good. Deep ecology is biocentric, placing humankind squarely in the midst of nature; democracy, in contrast, is humanistic. Deep ecology promotes a dissolution of the subject; democracy places the subject at its core.
In exploring the tension between deep ecology and democracy (but not, it should be noted, between environmentalism as such), Ferry draws on a few well-illustrated examples, including case studies of Medieval trials of animals, developments in German Romanticism, and Nazi ideology. The chapters on Nazism are especially interesting - although it is made clear that deep ecology is not a form of fascism; only that there are certain paralles in how each addresses the question of democracy and modernity.
The book is well-written and well-argued. In contrast to the stereotypical French philosopher (at least as many Americans have been exposed to French philosophy), Ferry's writing is elegant and clear, and he avoids obfuscation. I have used portions of this book in introductory classes, and plan to assign it in an upcoming undergraduate seminar.
Accurate yet misleading.......2001-08-30
This book is an astute critique of some of the naive and even undemocratic tendencies in Deep Ecology. But it is unfair to associate Deep Ecology with fascism without pointing out that fascism has other political heirs far more powerful than any ecologist.
The book leaves you feeling the author prefers needling theories to grappling with the ecological crisis in its true depth. This can't be done from the calculative, rationalist basis he finds comfortable. If Deep Ecology needs a new basis, Ferry gives few clues what that might be and settles instead for enlightened smugness.
Ferry thoughtful book.......2000-02-18
In this book, Luc Ferry uproots the animal rights movement and the ecology movement. He does this because of these movement anti-humanist thrust. But Ferry is not against these animal rights or the enviroment. He just thinks that we should protect the enviroment in the name of man and not the protect it in the name of rocks and .
Luc Ferry's Polemics.......1997-12-16
Luc Ferry raises some very important and pressing questions about the implied praxis behind deep ecology. Does the vision of society espoused by deep ecology depend on an authoritarian social structure? Does deep ecology demand a level of political correctness which places its premises beyond question? Ferry is not the first to raise these questions. The Institute for Social Ecology, led by Murray Bookchin, has made the critique of deep ecology its bread and butter. Of course, there are plenty of ideologues within radical ecology, but they do not make up the whole story. Particularly glaring is Ferry's one-sided depiction of eco-feminism. In fact, some eco-feminist work in the U.S. has been particularly sharp at questioning the orthodoxies of both radical ecology and feminism. The questions which occupy Ferry should be asked by every person who is involved in radical ecology, and many of his criticisms are on-target for a specific body of work. But he doesn't bother to see the whole picture, and readers should be careful to read beyond the quotes cited by Ferry and to study deep ecology and ecofeminism on their own terms.

COMMENTED DIARIES OF AN BRITISH LADY IN THE AMAZON.......2006-07-24
Lizzie Hessel was a British lady who, at a young age right after her marriage, followed her husband to the depths of the Amazon for him to take the job of rubber tapping manager at Orton, a famous rubber zone in northern Bolivia.
This book is basically a collection of letter Lizzie sent her family in England throughout her journey (which took over a year just to get to Orton). In it, she witnessed death (of Fitzcarraldo no less, the man immortalized by Herzog's movie), faced hunger and difficult living conditions with humidity, insects and no shelter in the jungle. The owner of Orton also dies on the way, which makes their situation uncertain halfway through the trip.
The authors added commentary to the letters, which provide the reader context to her situation. Maps also give the reader a good sense of where the couple is and where they are headed. It also shows how crazy their trip is, going around the interior of the continent to avoid a yellow fever outbreak. Overall, an outstanding story, with an ending that I will not give away, but is heartstopping.

New Love, Old problems Part 3.......2006-04-14
Ryo has lured Momo into a position where she is undoubtedly compromised. When he tries to force himself upon her she grabs the only weapon at her disposal that she has access to, a ballpoint pen, and stabs him in the head with it. Thinking she killed him she manages to get away, running into Kiley's arms just at the nick of time. Kiley comforts her and she has to admit to him that he was right all along about how Ryo is and that she misjudged him. In fact the whole thing smacks of how Momo used to be with Toji about Sae, back in the days when they were an item.
What Kiley and Momo are unaware of is that Sae and Ryo end up going home together after the incident with Momo, and Sae uses this info to try to hurt Momo the next day. It backfires, as Momo does not care about what Sae does, so long as she doesn't hurt Toji in the process. ..and a chance encounter with Ryo again, held off conveniently by a bottle of pepper spray that Kiley given her, makes Momo doubt everything that Kiley has ever told her when it comes to how he feels... so when she gets the opportunity she decides to give Kiley the thing he has been begging at for weeks, her body...but could his feelings for another prevent him from connecting with her physically?
Once again...pure drama... although I find it hilarious that Sae has come under Ryo's spell, considering he is playing her in the exact way that she has played everyone up until now. I also find it funny that Kiley's feelings keep vacillating between women...who is he in love with, and why is he stringing Momo along if he has feelings for another, or more importantly why would she put up with it if she knows? Momo irritated me a touch in this episode, I mean I can understand allowing Kiley some freedom about his past and his past loves, but this is too much.. He admits he can't love her completely because of another woman and then she freely accepts it just because Toji said something pointed that made sense? Unbelievable... and yet so good.
Manga fans, this is worth the hype. Pick it up, you won't regret it.
More twists and turns that leave you craving.......2003-07-14
I read girl's comics because they are like popcorns but some can be really too corny (i.e. Mamalade boy). Peach Girl is of the too-corny variety but I have to admit, it is one of the most twisted yet attractive soap opera for teens. At the end of the last page, it leaves you craving to find out what happens next.
In this book, Momo narrowly escapes rape attempt by Ryo (Kiley's brother). By the way, Japanese comics feature way too much sexual violence in casual way. I mean, they treat rape attempt the same way as if someone made a catcall (if you read Peach Girls and Mars you know what I mean). The girl just cries a little but the boy still loves the girl so the girl gets happy even if the perpetrator still lurks around free. Well, it's a soap opera... Anyway, Momo escapes from Ryo and now believes what Kiley has been saying all along. Ryo is like male Sae! He is pure evil. Sae is unaware of Ryo's true nature and is just too happy to sleep with him. I can't wait to find out how their relationship will develop (a match made in hell). Momo is worried because Toji is still Sae's boyfriend and this may hurt him. Momo also realizes that she truly loves Kiley and is willing to go all the way with him. But just when Momo is ready to give herself to Kiley, Kiley pulls away. Momo is worried and does not know what is going on. So she consults the school nurse, Misao. When she arrives to Misao's place, she finds that Kiley has been visiting Misao all along. It seems both Ryo and Kiley love Misao! Kiley is not over his feeling for Misao and this hurts Momo. What is going to happen next? And how many more books will be in Peach Girl? I only hope Sae and Ryo get what they deserve and Momo gets the boy(s).

Good introduction to basic ideas on contamination control!.......2003-03-05
A good introductory-level textbook on contamination control that that provides sufficient background knowledge for the lay person. Concepts were presented in a clear and concise manner. Could have been better if the book includes more diagrams and figures, though.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent comprehensive resource.......2006-01-06
Instead of buying the David Vitale APICS 50 minute series, buy this book. I have been in the software business for several years but did not know anything about MRP II. This book is a comprehensive resource that is also well-organized. Also, it is a good reference book for those who are more familiar with MRP I and MRP II. You don't have have MRP knowledge or experience to read this book but being from a manufacturing background is extremely helpful. This book has resulted in me being well equipped to partnering with the manufacturing division to implement the chosen software package (keeping in mind that my lack of knowledge is not in software implementation but is in MRP II/manufacturing shop floor activites).
A-to-Zee of the Manufacturing Module of ERP.......2005-10-27
The extensive coverage of every aspect of manufacturing planning and control, such as pegging, back-flushing, phantom BOMs, etc. makes this book the indispensable companion for any manufacturing professional, whether the user of the manufacturing module of ERP or an implementer.
Single Source for APICS CPIM Preparation.......2005-10-26
The book is an excellent supplementary reading for preparing for APICS CPIM examination. This book has made my preparation for CPIM a lot easier as it covers the entire APICS body of knowledge in a single volume. You don't have to search for another book on MRP or manufacturing. It is also a handy reference for all MRP/ERP/SCM professionals.
Everything an MRP2 User/Implementer Needs to Know Explained, Well Organized Body of Knowledge.......2005-10-22
My search for MRP II study and reference material ended with this book. This 585-page HANDBOOK OF MRP2 is the most comprehensive text on the subject. It starts with the basics of manufacturing and builds an exhaustive knowledge base for MRP2 students and practitioner. After reading this book you are well prepared to learn the Manufacturing/Production Planning module of any ERP/SCM package.
Because this book covers manufacturing right from strategic planning level to the shop floor, it helps as a primer as well as advanced reference not just for ERP users/implementers but also for SCM learners and practitioners.
The highlight of the first chapter is an exhaustive and lucid coverage of assemble-to-order manufacturing and mass customization. This is the best sourcebook for learning mass customization, product configuration, and planning bills of material.
Material requirements planning is covered in utmost detail in the 2nd chapter. The working of the entire manufacturing module is covered in this comprehensive chapter. Every relevant acronym is explained.
The next 7 chapters cover topics like Strategic and Business Planning, Sales and Operations Planning, Demand Management, Master Production Scheduling, Bill of Material, Capacity Management, and Shop Floor Control. Each topics is covered in a very concise and precise manner. The logical organization of topics in the book and the flow makes learning an extremely complex subject like manufacturing far more easier than one can ever imagine.
The last three chaptrers introducing ERP, SCM, and CRM are rather disappoining in content and coverage. However, the topics covered in this book are indispensible prerequisites for learning ERP and Supply Chain Management. Overall, this book can help you master MRP2, even if you don't know the basics of manufacturing planning.
Not an easy read, too much information thrown in..........2005-10-06
Was expecting a great book about MRP II but just didn't cut out to be on just MRP II. Too much other information were placed there that should have belonged to another chapter. Quite confusing with all the acronyms that were randomly placed in the text. This book assumes that you have read other MRP II books. Definitely not a primer on MRP II.

The solutions of systems of linear and nonlinear equations occurs in many situations and is therefore a question of major interest. Advances in computer technology has made it now possible to consider systems exceeding several hundred thousands of equations. However, there is a crucial need for more efficient algorithms.
The main focus of this book (except the last chapter, which is devoted to systems of nonlinear equations) is the consideration of solving the problem of the linear equation
Ax = b by an iterative method. Iterative methods for the solution of this question are described which are based on projections. Recently, such methods have received much attention from researchers in numerical linear algebra and have been applied to a wide range of problems.
The book is intended for students and researchers in numerical analysis and for practitioners and engineers who require the most recent methods for solving their particular problem.
Book Description
Ordinarily a moralist writer, in this novel Fielding creates a comedy of romance, by superimposing the positive act of the imagination on the raw material of the real world. It is ultimately both instructive and entertaining. Here Fielding parodies his own previous novels in this story of a young man resisting the many attempts to seduce him.

Joseph Andrews Notes.......2000-04-06
Cliff Notes have always been a useful study tool. While this book lacks the details that make Joseph Andrews humorous, it does give a brief background as to the events and characters interactions in each chapter. While I would not recommend this book as a replacement to reading the actual novel, it is an excellent study guide.
