5 out of 5 stars A classic volume with influential papers.......1999-05-02

The number of times that the papers in this volume has been referenced in later papers is a sure indicator of how influential the test within actually is. With classic articles by Jacques Gauthier, Walter Bock, John Ostrom, and Colin Pennycuick the book deserves a place on every scientist interested in the origin of birds.

5 out of 5 stars Locals Guide to the Bay Area.......2004-10-26

I rarely review books - but having just recieved this one as a gift - I felt it is worth giving a plug.

I'm Asian-American, love ethnic food of all types and have lived in San Francisco (yet another transplanted east coaster) for 15+ years.

Reading this guidebook gave me insight to a part of San Francisco where even I didn't have much awareness. I believe that 1/3 of the population is Asian - but from different parts of Asia - San Francisco Bay Area is extraordinarily unique. The only other places where I've seen a similar but different melting pot of Asian cultures is Singapore and NYC.

This guidebook covers food, shopping, nightlife, arts, theater and even alternative health care/fitness. It covers Chinese (Cantonese, Taiwanese, Shanghainese, etc.), Thai, Japanese, Philipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Afghan, Cambodian and a few others that I probably missed.

It truly is a cultural travel guide. My only complaint is that it is broad and not deep - but of course that's what lets the traveler and resident discover new treasures.

    Book Description

Mimus is as luminous and entertaining as Cornelia Funke's Thief Lord or Inkheart, yet Lilli Thal has created a dramatic and spellbinding universe all her own. The dark Middle Ages jump to life in blazing color in this world of adventure and imagination.

Two mighty kingdoms are engaged in endless, merciless war, but change appears imminent. King Philip is meeting his archenemy, King Theodo, to sign a peace treaty. But King Philip and his men are tricked and consigned to the squalid dungeons of King Theodo's castle. Soon, his son, 12-year-old Prince Florin, is lured to the castle, where the same horror awaits him.

On a whim, King Theodo decides to make the captive crown prince his second Fool, trained by Mimus, an enigmatic, occasionally spiteful, and unpredictable court jester. To add to Florin's misery, he and Mimus are fed a daily portion of gruel, forced to live in a dark, damp tower, and required to entertain the court on demand. But events ultimately turn for Florin and the other captives. They escape and it is Mimus's intervention that helps make it possible.

Mimus is a stunning novel that will take readers in its grip and hold them until the last page is turned. Through the brilliant rhymes, jokes, and wordplay of Mimus, the unceasing action and compelling events are sprinkled with lightness and humor.

5 out of 5 stars A surprising and happy find.......2007-01-26

I am victim to what many other reviewers have said about this book, I picked it up on a whim and didn't cherish high hopes for it. Within the first chapter though, I could tell I would enjoy reading it. Lilli Thal's writing style borders on romantic, entwining fantasy and poem seemlessly into her prose. Normally I hate books that do that, and I usually skip over the songs the authors put in as I can't be bothered to read them, but every tale and every silly song that she wrote enhances the story. Each line has a second meaning, and it's up to you, dear reader, and our young hero to decipher it. I personally can't wait until someone else I know reads it so I can discuss the book at length!

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly amazing.......2007-01-14

I bought this book on a whim, in a shipment of a lot of other books. It wasn't the one I was particularly looking forward to.

But...wow. It was amazing. Dazzling, spectacular, original. And amazingly well-written, even though it's a translation...good work, John Brownjohn! It's not black and white, but woven with multiple shades of gray, portraying the evil King Theodo as not-so-evil, Florin's own father as not-so-perfect, the haughty princess Alix as somehow kind as well, and the seemingly cold and heartless Mimus as a toughened but tragic individual. I particularly liked the scene where Florin is being held by dagger-point by Theodo's henchman, and Theodo's son by Florin's father's. They're at a stalemate, unmoving, until Mimus breaks in (greeting the guards) with, "We're playing an amusing game called, 'If you stab mine, I'll stab yours!' I'm acting as mediator." A few paragraphs later, when Florin's father king Philip asks what Mimus suggests, the jester replies, "Turn yourselves inside out and let the wind blow through your hearts. Turn the sky upside down and start afresh. Leave the dead to the dead and beg forgiveness of the living. And, since you won't manage to do any of that, sit before the fire and weave baskets!"

    Well said.

    5 out of 5 stars 2005 'Gold' Medal Winner!.......2006-07-02

Congratulations to Lilli Thal on her first place 'Gold' win in the 2005 ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Awards! Translated from Thal's native German by John Brownjohn, 'Mimus' is a prodigious tale of a young prince who is forced to become a Fool when tricked by his father's old enemy, King Theodo. The experience is humbling for the sheltered Prince Florin, who doesn't understand why King Theodo loathes his family so deeply. Revenge is taken upon the entire kingdom of Moltovia and Florin's father, King Phillip.
The story has a subtle message regarding the double-edged sword of revenge and the need for forgiveness, even if the crimes committed are horrid. There's also humor weaved skillfully on the pages. The banter between Mimus (King Theodo's Jester) and Prince Florin, who becomes the Jester's pupil, is very witty. The jokes and riddles lighten the horrors of torture and war. I'm hoping to find a sequel to Mimus, for I already miss the 'poetic jousting' between the Jester and Prince Florin.

4 out of 5 stars Surely you jest!.......2006-06-29

ha ha. Sorry. I couldn't resist.

When I first started reading Mimus, I was slightly skeptical. It was sort of an "Oh God, not another plucky-younger-hero-faces-adversity-and-is-a-bloody-genius piece of shmaltz". But it really isn't.

The characters are actually quite fleshy. My personal favorite is Mimus, the suffering enigmatic jester who takes young Prince Florin (who improves as the story goes on) under his ragged wing.

I also like the villain, King Theodo. He is a great villain, but he's not portrayed as a total fiend. He is a loving father, a devoted husband, and an all and all ok king. He's just also got this thing about locking other kings up and humiliating their heirs. Whatever.

So try it out. It's not your standard medieval-fantasy stuff, even though it outwardly may seem to be.

4 out of 5 stars Unusual and good.......2005-09-04

This is a good read--similar to many novels of heroic fantasy. The hero is a 12 year old prince who is betrayed by his enemies and must survive to win back his kingdom. But a number of things make this novel unique. First of all, the book is quite good at showing the character of the young prince. He has to endure and survive.
In most heroic fantasies, the protagonist triumphs by power or success in evading the enemy and winning allies. We experience the forces and struggles of good vs. evil. The hero's success is always underscored by failure to submit and fighting back.
But in this book, the hero must survive imprisonment and learn to handle defeat. That is quite a challenge for a young prince who was trained to be number one and never to show weakness.
The title, "Mimus," is the name of the king's fool--a court jester who is universally despised. The book is quite good at showing the role of the jester in medieval court life. Jesters entertain by a variety of skills as well as "gross-outs" similar to those of the crudest vaudeville shows. If they fail to please, they may be whipped or starved or even killed. The young prince is apprenticed to such a jester and must learn to survive with all of his intelligence, courage, and physical fitness. But it is Florin's social skills and flexibility that enable him to prevail in his new position.
Throughout this novel we find that things are not always black and white. That is what I enjoyed most about this book. The ending is so much more complex than a simple restoration of the prince to his role as head of the kingdom and humiliation of his former captors. Florin has been transformed by his experiences which become part of his character as he matures--not just a bad misfortune to be forever left behind.
I enjoyed this novel and recommend it.

                Book Description

Composer Jan Nov?k's haunting choral rendition of Vergil's ancient poetry commences with the voice of Dido the queen, foreshadowing a tragic tale of love and duty. Widely acclaimed in Europe, Nov?k's Dido and Mimus Magicus is now available to American audiences in a CD recording and a 3-language libretto.

Nov?k, a student of Bohuslav Martinu, was fascinated by the sound and rhythm of Latin poetry. His Dido brings the sound and fury of Vergil into the home, the classroom and the symphony hall.

                                    Book Description

In Thermal and Power Management of Integrated Circuits, power and thermal management issues in integrated circuits during normal operating conditions and stress operating conditions are addressed. Thermal management in VLSI circuits is becoming an integral part of the design, test, and manufacturing. Proper thermal management is the key to achieve high performance, quality and reliability. Performance and reliability of integrated circuits are strong functions of the junction temperature. A small increase in junction temperature may result in significant reduction in the device lifetime.

This book reviews the significance of the junction temperature as a reliability measure under nominal and burn-in conditions. The latest research in the area of electro-thermal modeling of integrated circuits will also be presented. Recent models and associated CAD tools are covered and various techniques at the circuit and system levels are reviewed. Subsequently, the authors provide an insight into the concept of thermal runaway and how it may best be avoided. A section on low temperature operation of integrated circuits concludes the book.

                                        Product Description

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A026393. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: An Atomic Force Microscope is equipped with a hot-stage and a vacuum system in order to enable in-situ studies of plastic deformation and interfacial sliding of thin metallic films on Si substrates during thermal cycling. The apparatus can reach sample temperatures of lOO deg C while maintaining optimum resolution. The system will allow future in-situ thermal cycling experiments on microelectronic devices in a protected environment to provide insight into the role of plastic deformation in metallic thin films on the stability of future generations of device structures. The details of the design, along with the performance limitations of the system are discussed. Preliminary results demonstrating the performance of the system at an elevated temperature are presented. Limited post-situ results from direct measurement of the plastic deformation of thin Cu films on Si substrates induced by thermal cycling are also presented, primarily with the objective of establishing the need for detailed in-situ studies. While artifacts such as permanent dimensional changes of the film are observed post-situ, a detailed mechanistic understanding of the interaction between the temperature-dependent stress state of the film and the resultant inelastic deformation within the film and at the interface can only be obtained through in-situ experiments.

                                                Book Description

How You Lose is a remarkable work of fiction in which a constellation of artfully linked stories follows a young woman named Melody, the man who shot her—Alex—and several people whose lives intersect briefly with Melody’s in a succession of meaningful coincidences. A wise and penetrating debut novel about the life-altering repercussions of a crime—for the perpetrator and victims alike—How You Lose plumbs the psychological depths of empathy, redemption, and identity. Distinguished not only by its compelling themes and all-too-human characters, How You Lose is remarkable for its elegant orchestration of the stories: They stand alone, but as the book progresses, they build into a whole that emerges as a deeply resounding and unified depiction of both the fragility and resilience of the human condition.

really enjoyed this book. the characters stayed with me all day and were well drawn. i don't like short stories, but this was an interesting way to write a book. i recommend this, and was shocked to find out after reading it that the author is in prison, and glad i didn't know it beforehand. knowing nothing about this beforehand made it a much more enjoyable experience.
i would definitely read more from this author, especially since the proceeds from the book go to a victim's rights.
