Book Description
From heading a campus of the largest public university in the nation to participating in the birth of molecular biology, Robert L. Sinsheimer's experiences have given him a unique vantage point from which to view the paths that science and education have taken in the twentieth century. This book tells the story of his life, of his own growth, and of his leading role in both science and higher learning during the past fifty years.
Robert L. Sinsheimer's experiences have given him a unique vantage point from which to view the paths that science and education have taken in the twentieth century. He has witnessed and participated in the birth of molecular biology, taught at leading universities, and headed a campus of the largest public university in the nation. This book tells the story of his life, of his own growth, and of his leading role in both science and higher learning during the past fifty years.
While a student and then a researcher at MIT, and as a professor at Iowa State University and later at Caltech, Sinsheimer was a major participant in the "molecular revolution" that radically transformed the science of life. He was also one of the first to foresee the potential of molecular biology and to draw attention to some of the ethical quandaries the new science would pose.
In 1977 Sinsheimer became chancellor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, at a crucial time in the campus's evolution. He played a key part in revitalizing the educational experiment that has made the campus unique among the state's institutions of higher learning.
Sinsheimer's life has been lived at the ever-advancing edge of knowledge. In simple, elegant language, he offers historical and philosophical insights into the world of science and the mind of a scientist. His reflections are both fascinating and valuable.

Book Description
This past May, Samantha lost her best friend, Juliana, to cancer. Now there is no one to share secrets, gossip, and dreams; no reason to go to dance class by herself. The way she sees it, there's only one thing to do: close that door, and try to move on. Then, in summer school, Samantha meets Mona, who has her own set of challenges. The two girls click right away. By summer's end they've found jobs, boyfriends, and an apartment in San Francisco. But doors don't always stay closed. Just before the anniversary of Jules's death, things begin to fall apart. Can Samantha and Mona come to terms with their separate pasts and make their friendship strong again?
Customer Reviews:
The Farther You Run.......2007-05-25
The Farther You Run, by Davida Hurwin, is a great teen fiction book. Samantha is an average teen who loses her best friend through a battle of cancer. She is living with her parents in the suburbs until she finally moves on she finds a new best friend named Mona. Mona is just like Samantha and they are unable to be apart. They are getting ready to move into a new apartment together and start a new life, until something comes between them. Will they be able to work out their problems and continue their friendship? I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to relate to their books and feel like they are the one going through this.
Not Really Impressd.......2005-12-31
I read A TIME FOR DANCING over the summer, and recieved this book for Christmas.I read it,and frankly - It did not live up to my standards.
While the plot was fairly good, and the first book was summed up well,I didn't feel the emotions of the characters nearly as much as I did with the first.
amazing.......2005-12-12
I actually read this book before I read A Time For Dancing and I must say it was amazing. It really sums up the first book well and continues with a really good storyline. Sam has the best parts in the story.Loveable, funny and at times heart-wrenching, she takes you through situations that you feel you can relate to. Mona on the other hand can get a little bit annoying but she's not a bad character. I defianently recommend this book to anyone who needs a good cry..
ps. keep tissues handy..you'll need them
The Farther You Run.......2005-12-08
Imagine loosing your best friend to cancer. This past May Samantha lost hers, her best friend for more than half her life. Juliana, her "one and only", was now gone. Now she has no one to relate to, and no one to share her deepest secrets with. No way does Samantha want to go back to dance class with out Juliana. In Samantha's eyes there's nothing she can do. All she can do is move on, and so far its been working. She hadn't even yet showed any emotions about the loss of Juliana.
Unexpectedly, Samantha meets Mona in summer school. They both failed English, so they already have one thing in common. They immediately click. It turns out that Mona's mother is bi-polar, and that has been a huge struggle for Mona. Growing up, she's gone to a ton of new schools, and was always having to make new friends. In a way, the things they both have been through in their lives made them be able to relate to one another. Neither of them get along with their mothers, so they can also relate to each other in that way.
They become the best of friends. By the end of summer they're already planning to buy an apartment together in San Francisco. They then find jobs and boyfriends. Life seems to be going great for the two of them, and it seems as if Samantha has a new best friend.
But things don't always stay this perfect. Right before the anniversary of Juliana's death, things start to fall apart for Samantha. Memories of Juliana keep coming back to her, and she's starting to miss her more and more. She cries all the time, and can't get Juliana out of her head. This soon starts to irritate Mona, and soon Samantha and Mona's friendship starts to fade. In order for their friendship to reconcile they need to sort things out between them, because they both really do need each other.
The author, Davida Wills Hurwin, of The Farther You Run, does an excellent job in writing this book. The reader is constantly entertained, and wondering what will happen next. It's an easy read, and I would specifically recommend this book to women. It holds a lot of common issues that women face every day. The issue of mother child relationships is a big one. Both of the main characters don't get along with their mothers, and you can see how their relationships transforms throughout the novel. The girls also have to worry about another common issue among women, boys! I really enjoyed reading this book, there was nothing about it that I didn't like. And like I said before, I would truly recommend it.
Interesting Read.......2005-05-11
This book is a sequel.Though I did not read the first title I was not lost about the characters. This book gave catch up so I understood what happen in the previous book. Samantha is getting over the death of her friend Julianna. During her sadness she meets a new friend named Mona in summer school.Mona let her feel alive again and they end up living together. But as time draws near for Juliana birthday Samantha goes into a withdrawn state and neither her mother or Mona knows what to do. An interesting read though I do not like books that have death and sadness in them it was not bad. They are also very diverse characters in this book Mona's mom who is bi-polar who sometimes goes after Mona, Samantha starts dating Noah who is model who is very narcissitic and they ended up breaking up and Daniel who dates Mona and ended up breaking up with her.

Davida Wills Hurwin is the author of a Time for Dancing (an ALA Best Book for Young Adults) and the Farther You Run. She teaches theater at Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences and lives in Southern California with her husband and daughter.
Customer Reviews:
Haunting & Realistic.......2006-01-17
When fifteen-year-old Katie O'Connor moves to Brentwood, all she wants to do is to fit in with people at her new high school. But she experiences terrifying hallucinations that haunt her and causes her to space out, disrupting her life. Did these things really happen to her, or is it just a figment of her blurry childhood imagination?
Circle the Soul Softly is a haunting and realistic story. It shows how someone's outer appearance can deceive you, and kept me turning the pages until I found the truth of what happened to Katie.

Book Description
The recognition of cell death as an active process has changed the way in which biologists view living things. Geneticists are now re-evaluating long-known mutants, redesigning research strategies, and searching for new model systems. Plant biologists now apply this new perspective in the investigation of programmed cell death (PCD) in plants. For the first time in a single volume, Programmed Cell Death in Plants draws together new information from researchers worldwide, enabling readers to develop new insights into this emerging topic. The book refers to relevant PDC paradigms in other organisms, describes the cell death events in reproductive tissues, and discusses PCD events in vegetative tissues and the evidence that links PCD regulation to cell cycle regulation. It also investigates the important role of PCD in plant responses to biotic stress. The author distills the difficult literature on this topic and summarizes the various signaling pathways involved, clarifying a subject critical to plant breeding. This volume concludes by stating how new model systems, careful assessment of cell death events, and markers specific to plant PCD are each required for additional insight into plant PCD processes.

Book Description
The molecular mechanisms which determine whether the cells of a multicellular organism will live or commit suicide have become a popular field of research in biology during the last decade. Cell death research in the plant field has also been expanding rapidly in the past 5 years. This special volume of
Plant Molecular Biology seeks to bring together examples of a diverse array of experimental approaches in a single volume. From the differentiation of tracheary elements in vascular plants to the more specialized cell death model of the aleurone in cereals, this volume will bring the reader up-to-date with the characterization of different plant model systems that are currently being studied. This endeavor should complement general overviews of plant cell death mechanisms that have been published elsewhere by providing more detailed information on various aspects of this field to interested graduate students and more senior biologists alike.
