5 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel review.......2007-04-25

Away Laughing on a Fast Camel is the fifth book in the Georgia Nicholson series. Georgia, a British teenager full of gorgeosity and attitude continues the cunning chronicles that are her diaries, full of red-bottom-osity, love-stricken cats, and a tres mad toddler. On top of all that, Georgia's love interest, the lead singer of the "Stiff Dylans", Robbie, (aka the Sex God) is off to Kiwi-a-go-go land, and Georgia's got the Cosmic Horn for their new singer, Masimo.
Libby, Georgia's toddler sister, is quite literally mad. One minute she's trying to kiss you, the next she's hitting you and calling you "cheeky monkey". You never know what's going to happen with that crazy bugger whether she's snuggling a turnip or running around in the nuddy-pants. I love the absolutely outrageous antics she gets up to, and it's always laugh out loud hilarious.
I totally recommend this book for girls in their teenage years. Some topics may be too awkward for younger girls. I love this book because there's a laugh on every page. Also, it's a great source for outrageous British slang. Georgia is always on a wacky adventure, so you can never put it down or else you will have tres snog withdrawel. This book is fabbity-fab-fab and you won't be able to read it just once!!

5 out of 5 stars True Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is FAB!.......2007-01-20

I love these books. I started getting them on book on tape at the library and I enjoy them sooo much. I really want to get them at the book store so that I can read them over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel.......2006-11-30

While S.G.(Robbie) is off in Kiwi-a-gogo,to snog the local sheep, Georgia is left on her all aloney, on her owney! But never fear, a new, and BETTER S.G. is on his way! And this one has an Italian accent! Eith Georgia, who knows what could go wrong? Oh, yeah! EVERYTHING! With Dave the laugh coaching her along, this is one of the funniest books in the searies!

4 out of 5 stars Another entry in the fabbity-fab life of Georgia Nicolson.......2006-10-29

With the Sex God away in Kiwi-a goo-goo land snogging marsupials and only writing to Georgia about thermal activity, Georgia is fully into her sadosity phase. That is until the new gorgy singer for the Stiff Dylans shows up. Suffering from a flash return of red bottomisity Georgia pulls out all the stops to snare the Sex Meister. Unfortunately this includes having her eyelids accidentally glue together with her boy entrancers at a most inopportune moment. Lucky for Georgia she always can turn to her Master of the Horn instructor, Dave the Laugh for a bit of advice (and a happy round of snogging).

The more I read of Georgia Nicolson's adventures the more I find myself chuckling. I did miss Angus' input a little, but the parts featuring the new little addition to the family in the form of Angus' cross-eyed offspring made up for it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am anxious to see what will happen to Georgia when she reaches Hamburger-a-goo-goo land in the next book.

3 out of 5 stars An okay book, not exciting........2006-10-21

Away Laughing on a Fast Camel
            By Louise Rennison
            Realistic Fiction

This book, Away Laughing on a Fast Camel, is a story about the feelings and thoughts of a girl named Georgia Nicholson, who lives in Britain. She has a crazy family consisting of a mom a dad and a 3-year-old sister. Georgia seems not to get along with her family for the most part, and relies a lot on her friends. The book states all of her feelings toward school, family, friends, and the world. As Georgia grows into adolescence, hormones often take over and make for a funny scene more than once as the story progresses. In this book, Georgia is writing a diary. Diary form fits this story very well because the author can go into more detail about Georgia's feelings than if it was told in 3rd person. The journal entries are entered at completely random times, Georgia might write 10 days in a row, and then not write another for a week or so. That, I think was my only problem with the authors writing style. Because of the randomness of the entry time, if I missed one or two dates, I might think it was September and it would turn out to be November. I wish the author had written in a more clear, organized way. I didn't enjoy this book a ton, but I liked it okay. I feel like the plot is not complex enough to captivate the reader, or grab their attention. In the previous books in this series, a lot went on and a new problem occurred each time. In this novel however, I was often bored and felt like many pages were there just to make the book longer. Over all, I'd give this book, three and a half stars.

                    Book Description

John Stevens Henslow is known for his formative influence on Charles Darwin, who described their meeting as the one circumstance "which influenced my career more than any other." A Professor of Botany at Cambridge University, Henslow was Darwin's teacher and eventual life-long friend, but what of the man himself? In this new biography, much previously unpublished material has been carefully gathered to produce a rounded picture of a remarkable academic and Victorian philanthropist. The time in 1829-31, when Darwin "walked with Henslow" in and around Cambridge, was followed directly by Darwin's voyage around the world. The gradually changing relationship between teacher and pupil over the course of time is revealed through their correspondence, illuminating a remarkable friendship that persisted, in spite of Darwin's eventual atheism and Henslow's never-failing liberal Christian belief, to the end of Henslow's life.

                          Book Description

                              Book Description

The Little Tragedies, written by Pushkin in the early 1830s, are highly compressed "chamber dramas", focusing on a protagonist at a crucial moment of moral choice - as Anderson puts it in her introduction, "each little tragedy begins in the fifth act." Far surpassing the previous translators, Anderson has sought to preserve the heightened intensity of Pushkin's diction while avoiding the archaic cadences of blank verse. Without sacrificing authenticity, Anderson has managed to translate these pieces into readable, twentieth-century English. Anderson has provided a substantial critical apparatus to the translations, including a lengthy introduction in which she both outlines the literary and historical context of the plays and explains her method as a translator. The volume also includes four critical essays (one on each tragedy), two of which Caryl Emerson has described as "the best ever written on these plays."

4 out of 5 stars Four intriguing plays.......2000-07-09

The "Little Tragedies" are four thematically related one-act plays which Pushkin wrote during his extremely productive stay on his country estate in the fall of 1830. The Miserly Knight is about the conflicts between the title character and his profligate son, who have very different but equally misguided visions of knightly honor. Mozart and Salieri portrays Salieri as a hardworking but uninspired student of music driven to murder by his jealousy of Mozart's genius. In The Stone Guest, Don Juan attempts to conquer the heart of Dona Anna, who he has earlier made a widow, but the title character, a statue of Dona Anna's deceased husband, endeavors to thwart Don Juan's hopes. Finally, A Feast During the Plague is an adaptation of a scene from a now-obscure English play in which a plague survivor struggles with the conflict between his sense of community with the deceased (who include his wife and mother) and his desire to live as happy a life as possible given the circumstances.

The approach of the plays is extremely interesting. Each is very concise and intense, focussing on the main character at a moment when he must make an important choice, and in each case the choice the protagonist makes results in one fashion or another in the destruction of at least a part of himself. Though Pushkin didn't write all that much drama (if I'm not mistaken his only other completed dramatic work is the considerably more orthodox Boris Godunov) and for that matter seldom set his works outside of Russia (all four of these plays are set in western Europe), he seems very much in his element here, and while these pieces aren't particularly multifaceted, they are sufficiently gripping that they really deserve more attention than they tend to get. In this edition (which appears to be the only edition in print in English), translator Nancy Anderson provides a detailed critical essay for each of the plays as well as a general introduction and a discussion of translation issues, and I found each of her essays to be strong and helpful. It's unfortunate that the Little Tragedies had been out-of-print until the release of this volume, and Anderson has done us a substantial service by making these innovative and exciting plays available again to the general English-speaking audience.

The book explores, in novel form, what can happen to us, whether professor or student, as a result of the philosophical classroom. The approach is to consider the classroom as a unique happening of philosophy, different than reporting theories or doing research, through which a distinctive mode of philosophical formation can occur.

Dr. Stark, I am buying your book you definately never plugged into your lectures. No doubt it will be worth the money, but you really should look into buying some regular ink and stop writing in gold, it costs way too much even though I know it matches your diamond encrusted gold chalk holder. ~ 'A' student Brooke

Hello everyone. I am in Chicago and proud to say I was a student of Dr. Stark in 2004 (Passed his Philosophy course too) in which I was very inspired. He taught little from this book but when I read it, it was inspiring and powerful. Being interactive with Dr. Stark and actually able to communicate with him one-on-one gave me insight to his character and thinking while navigating through this book. Dr. Stark is very down-to-earth and an excellent instructor. I suggest everyone should fly to Chicago to be in class with Dr. Stark!

Herman Stark does a fantastic with his short, passionate little story. His characters are vibrant, eccentric, and very intriguing. The story line is orginal, a big plus. The humor is very witty and puns play into almost every conversation. The book is must read for all those who love philosphy and the joy that it brings.

                                5 out of 5 stars A wickedly funny parody.......2004-06-17

The story deals not so much with what went right between Prof. Streng and Monika as with what went wrong. Probably too smart for a movie, but would be an intense play. The humor is usually below the surface, but sometimes not: "Others require oxygen too", "It (bumping into her breast) was a remarkably empirical sensation", and "...contemporary abuse of 'metaphysics' would be painful even to a flaming logical positivist"

                                  Book Description

Alexander Pushkin’s four compact plays, later known as The Little Tragedies, were written at the height of the author’s creative powers, and their influence on many Russian and Western writers cannot be overestimated. Yet Western readers are far more familiar with Pushkin’s lyrics, narrative poems, and prose than with his drama. The Little Tragedies have received few translations or scholarly examinations. Setting out to redress this and to reclaim a cornerstone of Pushkin’s work, Evodokimova and her distinguished contributors offer the first thorough critical study of these plays. They examine the historical roots and connective themes of the plays, offer close readings, and track the transformation of the works into other genres.

This volume includes a significant new translation by James Falen of the plays—"The Covetous Knight," "Mozart and Salieri," "The Stone Guest," and "A Feast in Time of Plague."

5 out of 5 stars the cesear if russia.......2000-07-19

Of course, I loved the book. It's well paced, entertaining, and insightful to a moment in russian history. Pushkin's charm as an dramatist is as well done as shakespeare. There aren't as many quotable lines, but that only makes it more fluent to read. The poetry is also nothing shy of great and the characters are well written, notably boris and the impostor. It's always tough to find russian literiture that doesn't bore a person, but pushkin's drama has enough romance (i.e. Romantic era), action, jokes, and touching speeches to move the reader to bite their nails, laugh out loud, and cry.
