I just got back from a trip with my mother and sister. We went to Munich, Fuessen, Wuerzburg, Rothenburg, and Triberg. We had 4-5 different travel books with us, and this one certainly won as the most comprehensive and easy-to-read.

Besides being named after an obscure Renaissance painter (turning the name "Jan" into "Yahn,") and having a butt so big that it "belongs in the Guinness Book of World Records," high school senior Jan Miller also has the dubious honor of being best friends with Rebecca Larkin, recently named one of CHIC magazine's New York "IT" Girls. Add a ridiculously huge crush on new-boy hottie Josh Gardner to this list of woes and sympathetic readers can see why "life would be so much simpler if guys were like mood rings, and they changed color when they liked you." It will take more than just Rebecca's easy assurances and a few pints of Ben & Jerry's for Jan to come to terms with her own inner "It" girl (or lack thereof).

Even though she incorporates some pretty clever turns of phrase ("I could not seize the mantle of power. I could not even seize the training bra of power.") high school teacher-turned-author Melissa Kantor doesn't do much else to distinguish her first novel from the hot-pink jacketed reads that seem to giggle loudly from bookstore shelves these days. Female teen readers who want more books like Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries or Jacqueline Wilson's Girls in Love series won't be disappointed in Confessions, but Kantor will need to move beyond the "plain girl who makes good" plot if she wants her witty writing noticed. A passable debut, but the Kantor has the potential to do better. --Jennifer Hubert

      5 out of 5 stars Such a good book!.......2006-12-18

This book is about a girl with an "It Girl" as her best friend. She has a tough time with a lot of stuff.
Looking for colleges , trying to understand friends , typical events and partys thrown in Highschool , and a cute boy she could never be with!
I couldn't put down the book! It is very beleivable and fun. It's perfect for ages 13 and up.
I thought that it was also humorus at times and written so well that i was almost stressed out myself and i was just reading it! - if that makes sense :)
A dramatically great book. READ IT!

This high school girl that went to a party just because she likes this really HOTT boy.Well the boy that invited her liked her and he took her up stairs and started making out with her.She did not want to do that. She was trying to get him off but he was pushing her down until she had to go.Because it was past her curfew.

Well I would totally recamend this book for people that like love books.

Jan (pronounced Yahn) Miller is having a rough senior year. Besides the fact that she's named after a (male) Renaissance painter that no one has ever heard of, her [...] is the size of Texas (and that's an understatement), she has a crush on the new boy, and she's best friends with Manhattan's It Girl, whom everyone loves. It will take more than reassurance from Rebecca, her best friend, and some Ben & Jerry's to realize her own inner It Girl, and readers will be cheering her on the whole way. This book is candidly funny, and you'll be able to identify with a lot of Jan's feelings.

5 out of 5 stars the best book i've ever read.......2006-07-17

Confessions of a not it girl was the most phenomenal! I read it all in a matter of 12 hours. Not only is it humurous, but it implies meaning and morals. It's deffinitely a page turner. Every other book i read can not even COMPARE to this one. It gives a person courage to make the first move and not to mention the suprise ending which is particularely the best part. If i could, i would read it over and over. The book was so addictive i re read the last few pages about a million times !! The book was awesome and nothing can compare to it! Just thinking about it makes me want to read it again.

4 out of 5 stars Flirtatious and funny!.......2006-06-27

Melissa Kantor really made a hit! This is a fun and refreshing story of falling in and out of love as experienced by high school senior Jan Miller.

Jan makes her problems obvious: her awful name, (it's supposed to be pronounced "Yahn"), her friend who is an official "It" girl (Jan officially isn't), and her extremely huge butt. And of course, her nonexistant love life.

What follows is a comic romance story that any teenage girl can relate to: babysitting, parties, college applications (yuck!), and trying to make that special someone notice you the whole time! Definitely a fun, feel-good read!

After all, why is it that everyone else seems to be able to use the New York skyline as an instrument of seduction?

              Book Description

The core message of this study is that key insights emerge from understanding what determines population growth rate, and that application of the approach will make ecology a more predictive science. What determines where a species lives? And what determines its abundance? Despite great progress in the twentieth century, much more remains to be done before we can provide full answers to these classic questions in ecology. This book takes an original approach by describing and deploying progressive research methods.

                      Book Description

Dynamic data assimilation is the assessment, combination and synthesis of observational data, scientific laws and mathematical models to make predictions about how a complex physical system will behave. This book is designed to be a basic one-stop reference for graduate students and researchers. It is based on graduate courses taught over a decade to mathematicians, scientists, and engineers, and its modular structure accommodates the various audience requirements. Chapters end with a section that provides pointers to the literature, and a set of exercises with instructive hints. Computation is encouraged: algorithms are liberally scattered throughout the text. Accompanying refresher material - in many areas of mathematics including vector spaces, optimization and probability theory - will be available from www.cambridge.org/0521851556. The book ends with a comprehensive bibliography.

4 out of 5 stars emphasises computational methods.......2006-10-20

This is a large and comprehensive collection of techniques used to analyse data. Think of it perhaps as powerful "curve fitting". There are the elementary ideas, like linear least squares fitting. Where the fitted function is just a line. Then we see nonlinear least squares, where there is now an arbitrary fitted function.

Other concepts will be familiar to some readers. Steepest descent and singular value decomposition for example.

The book also emphasises computational implementations of its methods. Acknowledging that many people now have large data sets to analyse, and have the necessary computational resources. So the question is how to do so. Code snippets are given in Fortran, which is still the main language of science and engineering.

                      Book Description

In Way Down Yonder in the Indian Nation--a title inspired by the lyrics of Woody Guthrie--best-selling author Michael Wallis creates a brilliant tableau of America's heartland.

Featuring a new introduction by the author, this collection of sixteen essays reflects the finest examples of Wallis's writing and harkens back to a time before fast food and malls replaced family-owned diners along Route 66. From tales of the notorious Oklahoma panhandle, where "the only law was the colt and the carbine," to the fate of Woody Guthrie's mother Nora, who, burdened by depression, set fire to her kids and spent the last years of her life in an asylum, Way Down Yonder in the Indian Nation brings to life some of Oklahoma's most memorable characters--the famous and infamous, the ordinary and down-home.

                      5 out of 5 stars "They're there today.And when they're gone,there will be no more.".......2005-07-02

This book is a real sleeper.I bought it a few years ago,and it kind of got lost;which isn't hard amongst 6 or 7 thousand in my library.Checking the Reviews, though there were only 2,they were good;but not one since 23 Jan 03. Well here's number 3!
When I started the book,I was not familiar with the author, although I had read his 'Route 66' a while ago and liked it.However; his name just didn't ring a bell with me.
Within a half hour I was really impressed with his observation storytelling and writing skills. In many ways he reminds me of one of my favorites,Larry McMurtry.
One of the themes of his book is that most people don't know much about Oklahoma and believe not much ever happened there. One is soon dispelled of that idea as you get into the book .Oklahoma is just about in the center of America and just about everything that happened as the country developed was impacted by or on Oklahoma.Wallis reminds us that it was not even a State until it became the 46th in 1907.
Oklahoma was the country of Indians,Woody Guthrie,Dust Bowl,Depression,Oil Barons,Bill Mauldin and the Fighting 45th Thunderbirds,Frontier Religion,Frontier Justice,Gangsters and Outlaws,Route 66,The Real Wild West and 101 Ranch,Illegal Booze,John Steinbeck,Football Legends, and probably the greatest Salt of the Earth people you could find anywhere.
Wallis is a Journalist and writes with a flair that holds your interest so well you don't want to put the book down and are even wanting more when you reach the end.
The book is full of facts, observations, quotes, real characters, and information you just didn't know or even thought of.
For instance,We all know about Woody Guthrie, but how many know how little he was liked in Oklahoma, where he was born and raised? And did you know he was the waterboy for the footbaall team?
There are many, many great lines throughout the book. Here's a few to demonstrate :
"A million dollar deal cemented with a handshake."
"Types who enjoy nothing more than a barbacue over a heap
                      of banned books set ablaze."
"Bakersfield became the third-largest city in Oklahoma after
                      Oklahoma City and Tulsa."
"Oklahoma is one-eight the size of Alaska and more than twice
as big as all of New England."
"More languages are spoken in Oklahoma than on the entire
                      European continent."
Woody Guthrie was "Just a boy from Okaloma on a an endless
                      one- night stand".
                      "We don't like cities anymore.We don't like what the've
                      become."
"Indian Territory (Oklahoma) became known as 'robber's
roost',and its sinister reputation spread faster than fresh
                      gossip at a church supper."
"I've never hanged a man who came back to have the job done
                      over."
Judge Parker (the Hanging Judge) :I sentence you to hang
by the neck until you are dead, dead, dead." "Farewell
forever, until the court and you and all here today shall
meet together in the general resurrection."
"Whiskey helps to kill the poison in the night air."
"As unpredictable as a cyclone, fierce as a blue norther,
and wily as a prarie wolf,Jim Jordan has been a cowboy and
trader for most of his years. He's a combination of Judge
Roy Bean and Buffalo Bill, with a generous dose of saddle
tramp mixed in for good measure."
"And the morning after a jug of that stepped-up moonshine
was drained, the poetry of 'Amazing Grace' would still make
                      a band of angels weep."
See what I mean,Wallis is is a super author and if you like this sort of observation, storytelling and writing; this book is a real treasure .

4 out of 5 stars A state so few know.......2003-01-24

When a person first moves to Oklahoma, one of the things that stands out is that, like the rest of the nation, Oklahomans don't really know where they fit into the overall picture of our country. This fact is clearly described by Michael Wallis in the beginning of this series of essays. He also describes many of the events, people, and customs that make Oklahoma what it is.

From Indian Territory to statehood, barbecue to the "cow thieves and outlaws reunion," from Route 66 to oil, the state has a breadth of history that is both large and small. But always fascinating. As a transplant himself, Wallis has tried to find what Oklahoma is, and has done a good job. This is a wonderfully informative read for both Okies and others who have no idea where Oklahoma is.

Readers who enjoy this taste of history might also enjoy some of Wallis' other books, such as Route 66: The Mother Road and Pretty Boy: The Life and Times of Charles Arthur Floyd.

                      Book Description

Sparkling essays on a variety of subjects--literature, art, popular culture, autobiography--by a renowned young American novelist.

In her brilliant and daring novels The Blindfold and The Enchantment of Lily Dahl, Siri Hustvedt has won critical acclaim and a rapidly expanding international audience. But she is also a wide-ranging essayist and critic, frequently reexamining in her fascinating nonfiction many of the central leitmotifs of her fiction.

The six pieces in Yonder, Hustvedt's first book of essays, are all meditations on the complex relationship between art and the world. They include a personal essay on memory and place, which investigates the images we retain from our lives, the lives of others in the world, and the lives of characters in books. In "Vermeer's Annunciation," Hustvedt gives an entirely original interpretation of the Vermeer painting Woman with a Pearl Necklace. In "Ghosts at the Table," she examines the essence of still life as a genre in painting from Cotan and Chardin to Philip Guston. Other essays include a profound piece about Dickens, a reassessment of The Great Gatsby, and a witty and provocative assault on contemporary pieties entitled "A Plea for Eros."

4 out of 5 stars Some compelling essays.......1999-07-06

Considering the attention and praise Siri Hustvedt's novels have received, I was surprised that this book was published almost invisibly a year ago. I just discovered Yonder a few weeks ago (mid-1999) and haven't found any reviews of it outside of the trades -- which is unfortunate, since I'm pretty sure that fans of her novels (as well as Auster's novels) would enjoy these essays if they knew the book existed at all. Yonder's a quick but memorable read -- Hustvedt's essays focus on the same preoccupations as her novels: the parallel worlds of language and experience; defining self and landscape through absence and presence; etc. Best are the title essay and the other personal/autobiographical essays -- the literary essays (on Dickens and Fitzgerald) are less compelling but still have some memorable parts. I enjoyed Yonder as much as I did The Blindfold, both for its clear style and its ideas. At its best, the essays in Yonder are freed from the constraints of fiction, presenting compelling ideas and resonant images in a compact, finely made form.
