NICKY TAG! NICKY TAG!
All his life, crowds have been cheering for Nick Taglio.
He’s been skating since he could walk, scoring goals since he picked up a hockey stick. He’s only a sophomore but he rules the ice, because Nicky Tag’s a fighter. Which means you have to take some hits; concussions come with the territory. When he gets another head injury, his doctor, his parents, and his coach tell him he can never play again. Too dangerous, they say. He can’t risk his future.
But they don’t understand that without hockey, Nick has no future. It’s not a game, it’s his life. And nobody can stop him from playing.

It's a great book, but I wouldn't recommend it for kids 11 and under because of inaproprit things, onther than that it was good.......2007-03-02
If you are looking for a great book check out open ice.
The things I liked most about this book is that it had to do with my favorit sport hoskey, and the was exactly how a teen aged hockey layer would act. The things I diden't like was that if you don't know much about hockey you wouldn't understand it, and theres a lot of inaproprit things.
This book is about a teen Nick Tagilo the best hockey player on his high school hockey team that can't play due to a brain ingery he got from being blind sided, but to Nick hockey wasn't just a sport, it was his life.
She shoots - she scores!!!.......2007-02-13
Fast-paced literary skater Pat Hughes showed that she is comfortable on the ice of writing and definitely a senior member of the varsity team
in her latest book Open Ice. She deftly negotiates the delicate edge-of-the-blade teenage dialogue while skating backwards and making it look easy. This sports reader's attention was glued to every page-turning play of her game even ruining his planned Sunday afternoon nap which was replaced by reading the last 160 pages of Open Ice.
>
>I loved this book. Hughes placed me directly in the midst of these people and their thoughts. I feel like I know them and, the ultimate sign of great writing, I wonder what they are doing now that I've finished reading the book. Not only does Hughes think like a teenager but, as she's done in her previous books Guerrilla Season and Breaker Boys, she comes across like an authentic teenage guy! This book felt like it was told to me by Nick himself, a little wiser, more mature, but definitely by the guy who lived the experience.
>
>And then the layers...When Devin was distancing herself from Nick and
>urging him to pressure his parents to play again I thought I was SO smart that I could see right through her motives. I had her pegged for what she was. Then I smiled as it occurred to me that I get NO credit for my revelation. Hughes had me right where she wanted me. Seeing only what she wanted me to see. But then at the after-game party when the details about her and Ramsey came out I stopped hating her and felt bad for her instead. Her intentions were not as clear as I had been ready for them to be earlier in the book. Hughes didn't take the easy literary route and stop at Devin being a hockey groupie. She had deeper problems and insecurities. I rode the roller coaster that Hughes laid out for me and what a great ride it was!
>
Every family of a traumatic brain injury patient should read this book. My heart skipped a beat when Nick accidentally sent the Instant Message to the wrong person knowing that he would never have done that prior to the concussion, and knowing that it was the tip of the iceberg of his problems. As he became more contentious and more aggressive and
impulsive I was scared for the fallout. And sure enough it came. The standoff between Nick and his Dad was stressful. Working around rehab I have seen the disintegration of many marriages and families because the TBI patient "isn't who he used to be". This book has the power to let others have a peek inside the mind of a person suffering from post-concussive syndrome.
Hughes is a talented, authentic and entertaining writer. With this one she's also done a great service to the community of families living with mild brain injury patients.
Captures the politics of teenage life.......2007-01-05
I thought Pat Hughes captured perfectly the politics of teenage life. Setting her novel in the world of school sports enhances its themes of relationships, friendship, love and personal growth. I truly enjoyed Open Ice.
Open Ice - I couldn't put it down........2006-12-05
I gave Open Ice to my boyfriend (24) who does not read often for fun. He was reluctant to start the book, but as a hockey player, he was intrigued. He read it in 2 days and then told me to start right away so we could talk about it. I read it the next day and it was great! It was so cool to be able to talk about the book with him.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
After reading it, I e-mailed the author to express my delight with the book and she responded within 24 hours. I was so excited to actually communicate with an AUTHOR!
Check this book out, even if you don't care about hockey, you'll get so involved with the characters and Nick's plight.
Open Ice = love.......2006-08-01
I am a 14 year old girl and I just finished reading Open Ice. It was by far the best book I have read in awhile. I am a hockey player so I know how important hockey was to Nick. This was an inspiring book for me because I appreciated how much Nick fought to play, if something like that happened to me I would fight too. I think all teens should read this book whether you play hockey or not, it makes you realize a lot of things. Nick is an inspiring character to me because I could completely relate to everything he was talking about. Overall this book was amazing!

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A015714. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) is responsible for all U.S. Navy and Marine Corps facilities. The mission of NAVFAC is to plan and deliver innovative best-value technology-leveraged solutions and alternatives that enable the clients and various commands to accomplish their missions. NAVFAC is the major claimant for the eleven Engineering Field Division Activities (EFDIA). The Officer in Charge of Contracts (OlCC) is primarily responsible for the post-award phase of construction contracts that NAVFAC administers. The OICCs work at the various field offices throughout the NAVFAC organization. The resource sponsor for NAVFAC is N4, Fleet Readiness and Logistics who is responsible for identifying the mission funding and authorizing requirements for NAVFAC. As the major claimant NAVFAC is responsible for determining the requirements for the EFD/As which are funded by N4. Due to funding constraints the Navy is required to be as efficient as possible. This research analyzes the current manpower algorithms used to determine requirements for the various EFD/As. The data shows that the current algorithm does not reflect a number of factors impacting work-hours. An analysis was conducted to derive a more accurate algorithm to include the number of contracts and a method to include other missing factors such as distance, complexity other military construction providers and commanding officer interest etc.
Book Description
OPEN NET is another inimitable account of an amateur's foibles meeting the world of professional sport.
George Plimpton takes to the ice a goalie for the Boston Bruins, after first signing a document holding the team harmless if he should meet with injury or death as their amateur goaltender. He survives a game against the Philadelphia Flyers relaticely unscathed - and brings back this memorable portrait of the rough-and-tumble world of professional hockey.
Customer Reviews:
Great Hockey book.......2006-06-30
If you enjoy Ice Hockey, especially from a historical perspective, this is the book to read. Fans of Don Cherry will love this book.
He shoots and scores!.......2006-01-30
George Plimpton once again dons a uniform and plays a game. This time he tackles hockey while training with the Boston Bruins.
Plimpton does a wonderful job of painting a realistic view of life as a goalie. He uses the voices of other players to help the story along, rather than as just filler from big names. He also tells his tale without a lot of false excitement. You can tell he totally loves the experience, yet at times, you can see the effort does drain him (naturally).
His comments about and conversations with the likes of 'Seaweed' Pettie, Garry Cheevers and Don Cheery really add a lot of depth to the book. In conversations I have had with some of these men, I clearly got the point that they enjoyed this as much as Plimpton did and as much as I did as a reader.
This is a great read for the unfulfilled athlete in all of us.
THE MAN BETWEEN THE PIPES SCORES.......2004-12-05
THIS IS ONE OF PLIMPTON'S BEST. I REALLY ENJOYED HIS STORY PLAYING GOAL FOR THE BRUINS. HIS CONVERSATIONS WITH VARIOUS PLAYERS AND COACHES ARE EXCELLENT. HIS DESCRIPTIONS OF THE EVENTS MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE RIGHT THERE ON THE ICE WITH HIM. PLIMPTON DOESN'T WASTE TOO MUCH TIME DESCRIBING HIS SURROUNDINGS LIKE HE DOES IN OTHER BOOKS. HE GOES STRAIGHT TO THE POINT. SOME HIGHLIGHTS ARE DESCRIBING HOW HE PUTS HIS UNIFORM ON IN A DETAILED ORDER, OLD STORIES ABOUT EDDIE SHORE, AND HIS ACTUAL TIME ON THE ICE PLAYING GOAL DURING A COUPLE OF EXHIBITION GAMES MAKE THIS A GREAT READ.
WONDERFUL BOOK...I MISS GEORGE.......2004-04-03
As a big hockey fan, and a goaltender, this was just required reading. Yet, it turned out to be more. This well written, quick read was a gas to enjoy and quote. I will be glad to read others by George Plimpton, and I'm already on the hunt for PAPER LION.
I guess thats my ringing endorcement. If I'm looking to read a book on football, the author must be wonderful. Quick, funny, well written, and vastly enjoyable, you wont regret buying this book, no matter what the price.
A real treat - thanks George!.......2003-12-13
This book was a real joy to read. It was a pleasure to take in George's unique observations as he bravely went where no non-athlete has been before, between the pipes to guard the goal of the famed Boston Bruins.
What makes this book so special is George's lack of prejudice and his ability to tell a story complete with the smells, sights, thoughts, feelings and emotions of being completely overwhelmed by a situation that he has absolutely no control over.
His story-telling is succinct and yet descriptive enough so that the reader feels like s/he is in the room with George, as he talks with players, coaches, hockey wives, fans, etc.
Throughout the book, it amused me to picture George holding a conversation these hockey players - his Ivy-league mesmerisms and accent remarkable proof that he is a stranger in this crowd.
It is impressive that Plimpton is not judgmental in his analysis of this much maligned sport. He has a splendid time in his experiences, and I had an equally splendid time reading his book. Don't worry that this book was published in the 80s, as this is a timeless storytelling achievement.

The Storming Media report number is A800604. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: During fiscal year 1999, the Navy conducted the Pearl Harbor Fleet Maintenance Pilot program, converting the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard from a revolving fund activity to merge with the Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility and consolidate under appropriated funding. This research will relate the complexities of change during the Pearl Harbor Pilot, specifically with regard to the two distinct types of funding methods used at the Depot and Intermediate Maintenance Facilities: revolving funds (Navy Working Capital Fund) and appropriated funds (mission funds), respectively. The primary research goal is to define the advantages and disadvantages of accounting for the consolidated operations at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility with appropriated funding. To provide an analysis of this topic, results of the Pearl Harbor Pilot Performance metrics will be studied and the two types of funding will be compared and contrasted. Results of the Pilot program are mixed and are still open to debate two years after the conclusion of the test. Implications for the Marine Corps Maintenance Depots are paralleled to the current dilemma facing the Navy on whether to continue the success of the Pilot or to reorganize again under a revolving fund system.

A must have book for all school libraries........2002-03-19
I'm writing this on behalf of my 6 year old son who is a New Jersey Devils fan and admirer of Scott Gomez. The book is informative and well written. We find out how old Scott was when he took up hockey(age 5)and how Scott worked his way up the league and eventually into the NHL. Scott Gomez is a genuine roll model for young people and especially young Hispanics who don't think other Hispanics played hockey(we are stereotypicaly boxers who don't know how to do anything else). I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the sport or is a new fan of hockey. What is really warm about this is how close Scott is to his dad, Carlos, and what a tight knit family they are.

Description:
Tunnel valleys are large, elongate and irregular depressions cut beneath the margin of former ice sheets. They are generally believed to play a substantial role for the entire hydraulic system beneath ice sheets and thus also for ice sheet behaviour. Their origin, however, remains poorly understood. Examination of newly collected Danish hydrogeophysical and lithological data has revealed numerous systems of buried valleys 50-350m deep and 0.5-4km wide. These valleys are similar to the open tunnel valleys found in the present-day landscape. Infills comprise a variety of sediments often with subglacial clay till and meltwater deposits. The incised substratum consists of limestone, heavy Paleogene clay, sand and silt. The tunnel valleys have preferred orientations and can be divided into several generations, each ascribed individual ice advances or ice sheets occurring during multiple glaciations. The processes forming the valleys appear to prefer pre-existing (open and buried) valleys for the renewed erosion. Thus, old subglacial erosion pathways have been re-used several times, and some of the present tunnel valleys may have been established in the middle or early Quaternary or even earlier. This valley-re-use effect causes apparently anastomosed valley systems to emerge in the data images. The valleys were mainly eroded by meltwater supposed to have drained from subglacially stored reservoirs, probably behind a frozen margin. The water was most likely released in repeated jokulhlaups and flowed in relatively small channels on the floors of the tunnel valleys, which gradually became ice-filled with the lowering of the bed. Selective linear, glacial erosion is also believed to have contributed to the erosion. This, however, was most pronounced for the widest valleys and is supposed to have played a secondary role. ole.

From the author: Objective: Black tea has been recently ascertained as a source of water-soluble antioxidants that may enhance cellular antioxidant abilities. The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of the preventive effect of black tea on oxidative modifications of liver lipids and proteins of 2-month-old rats intoxicated chronically (28 days) with ethanol. Method: Lipid peroxidation was estimated by measurement of lipid hydroperoxides, malondialdehyde, and 4-hydroxynonenal by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and by spectrophotometric determination of conjugated dienes. The markers of protein oxidative modification products--bistyrosine and tryptophan--were quantified by spectrofluorimetry, whereas levels of amino, sulfhydryl, and carbonyl groups were estimated spectrophotometrically. Results: Ethanol intoxication caused changes in liver antioxidant abilities that led to the generation of oxidative stress and, consequently, to the significant increase in products of lipid and protein oxidative modification. Enhanced lipid peroxidation was confirmed by assessment of the concentration of lipid peroxidation products measured at all examined levels. Protein modifications were evidenced by increase in levels of bistyrosine and carbonyl groups and by decrease in concentration of tryptophan and levels of sulfhydryl and amino groups. The metabolic consequences of oxidative modifications of lipids and proteins were reduced by cathepsin B activity and translocation of this lysosomal protease into cytosol as well as markers of liver damage--alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST--into the blood serum. Administration of black tea to ethanol-intoxicated rats partially protected antioxidant parameters and, remarkably, prevented the significant increase in concentrations of all measured lipid peroxidation products. Moreover, the levels of markers of the protein-modification process were similar to those of the control group. Protection of biological membranes by black tea prevents changes in the permeability of these membranes and translocation of the examined enzymes. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that black tea protects proteins and lipids against oxidative modification induced by chronic ethanol intoxication, which preserves changes in redox and proteolytic homeostasis.

Book Description
This book introduces multiple-latent variable models by utilizing path diagrams to explain the underlying relationships in the models. This approach helps less mathematically inclined students grasp the underlying relationships between path analysis, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling more easily. A few sections of the book make use of elementary matrix algebra. An appendix on the topic is provided for those who need a review. The author maintains an informal style so as to increase the book's accessibility. Notes at the end of each chapter provide some of the more technical details. The book is not tied to a particular computer program, but special attention is paid to LISREL, EQS, AMOS, and Mx.
New in the fourth edition of Latent Variable Models:
*
a data CD that features the correlation and covariance matrices used in the exercises;
*
new sections on missing data, non-normality, mediation, factorial invariance, and automating the construction of path diagrams; and
*
reorganization of chapters 3-7 to enhance the flow of the book and its flexibility for teaching.
Intended for advanced students and researchers in the areas of social, educational, clinical, industrial, consumer, personality, and developmental psychology, sociology, political science, and marketing, some prior familiarity with correlation and regression is helpful.

and can hardly be understood by others. This book
explains a number of statistical methods, such as
factor analysis, path analysis, and structural
equation models, and does so in ways that are
clear, easy to grasp, and with fuly-worked
examples. I learned more about statistics from
this one book than all the others I've read
combined.

Book Description
A powerful story that explores the modern dilemma of passion versus tranquillity.
Set in Paris and New York, The Green Hour tells the story of Dominique, a brilliant art historian who has recently recovered from a bout with cancer. The novel follows Dominique from her college years to the present, unfolding a moving love story in which Dominique is torn between her passion for the idealistic and seductive Rex, who periodically disappears from her life, and her feelings for Eric, a wealthy American businessman deeply in love with her.
Woven into this romance is the equally gripping tale of Dominique's relationship with art and the cultural turmoils of our time. By portraying a character for whom love and idealism are lost, this novel hauntingly shows us the importance of pursuing both.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read!.......2003-12-17
Quite simply, one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. A heartbreaking and intellectually challenging novel about the complicated life of a fascinating woman, Dominique. A book for novel-lovers, art-lovers, and anyone with an interest in left wing politics as well. This books moves quickly and yet gives so much; a mother's love for a child, a woman's love for a man, art at the Prado, rebellious radical politics--it's all here. Eloquently written--words matter to this writer. I couldn't put it down. Not to be missed!
"life, art, passion and reason...".......2003-10-29
This small novel takes a slice of time, fills it with unusual characters and offers the reader a glimpse into one woman's heart and the men she loves. The protagonist of this story, Dominique, idealistically pursues the transcendence of ideas, her feet on the ground, but her head stubbornly remains in the clouds. An art historian and graduate student, Dominique enjoys the aid of a mentor, but in her youthful hubris, she fails to recognize the true nature of the professor's affection. Unaware, she bruises his sensibilities and fragile ego with tales of her romantic adventures. Dominique is the kind of woman who carefully attends her own inner life, but is remarkably careless of others, throughout her life.
Dominique's heart is engaged in a love affair, begun in her graduate days, that lasts throughout her life, intermittent, but unwavering in its passion. Rex, her lover, is unable to stay in one place for long, frequently traveling abroad as a self-styled political revolutionary. Although their devotion is mutual, they both acknowledge that Dominique harbors a bourgeois heart. Rex believes they are soul mates, even when he is elsewhere, in search of new causes. Their most idyllic times are spent in Paris, where they share a flat. Such days live in Dominique's memory long after her lover's side of the bed is abandoned.
Eventually Dominique is introduced to Eric, worldly enough to realize that this wealthy man can offer the security and emotional stability she needs. Serenity is attractive, especially after a bout with cancer, now in remission, that has shaped an awareness of her own mortality. Yet, when Rex beckons, she runs to his side. Curiously, Eric accepts the duality of his beloved's affections, understanding that Dominique is torn between youthful passion (read: addiction) than romance and a mature appreciation of deep affection.
Dominique discovers Rex again in Paris (where else?), while living there with Eric. By this time, Rex has an infant son, Kenji, whose mother has returned to Japan. This third "man" in Dominique's life is pivotal to the story and captures her heart irrevocably. Dominique, Rex and Kenji live together blissfully, until one tragic day when Kenji is unexpectedly kidnapped. Predictably, Rex is undone, wandering the earth in despair, leaving Dominique to manage her own grief.
Tuten's novel is an eccentric fairy tale, believable only when viewed through the strict constructs of the plot. There are flaws: most noticeably, Dominique's freedom from money issues, the tenure at her mentor's university and Eric's financial generosity over the years. Indiscriminate hours are spent rhapsodizing over "the green hour" (le heuer verte): early evening in 1980's Paris cafes, when customers drown their troubles in absinthe (not yet illegal in the late 1900's). Tuten's elegant prose perfectly defines Dominique's sophisticated world, carving out her esoteric niche in "the green hour", where everything else fades into background noise. Ultimately, Dominique only desires the return of Kenji, the one person in her life, other than herself, she is able to love unconditionally. Luan Gaines/2003.
A Brilliant Read.......2002-11-16
Tuten is a one of those jewels that people who are in the know hold dearly to themselves. The Green Hour is his finest novel to date, and that said, the rest of his work is wonderful and thought-provoking. Tuten's work, like the work of many of his more well known peers, (Philip Roth, John Updike, Doris Lessing) grows on itself, deepens, his form and style becoming more and more fluid, seemless, sure and just beautiful. He is a man who thinks words matter, that beauty matters, as well as art, love and political beliefs.
The heroine of The Green Hour, Dominique, thinks that all those things matter, too. An art historian and academic, she embodies much of the idealism and ambivalence of those reaching adulthood during Vietnam. She loves a man named Rex, who, among other things, organizes labor strikes in Mexico. She loves the child left in his life by a Japanese anarchist heiress, Kenji. And she grows to love another man who eventually takes care of her, something she is loathe to admit she needs. Interspersed throughout the years of Dominique's life are profoud inquiries into the importance of all things--what matters in life? Who are we? These are the question Tuten poses, and he tells a beautiful story while probing the aches of our souls.
Better than most.......2002-11-09
I read Tuten's The Adventures of Mao a few years ago and didn't get it. It was just to surreal for me. This novel is far more convential. It's a love story about art and culture and redheads. Kind of reminds me of a novel of a similar theme: Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins. And as Robbins has a way with metaphor Tuten has a way with coining new words. I prefer Robbins more but this one was definitely worth the read.
