I enjoyed Mr.Tates' book very much.I plan on thru-hiking in a couple of years and his accounts of the pleasures and severities of the trail were laid out in very interesting details.I met Mr.Tate at an REI talk he gave promoting his book.It was a pleasure to meet him and listen to his lecture on hiking the AT.

Great Book!!!!! .......2006-09-29

I have had the pleasure of meeting "Model-T" this summer on the trail, while he was halfway through his 4th AT hike!!!! After listening to a couple of stories from him and learning that he wrote a book about his first trip, I couldn't wait to get back home and buy the book.
This book is extremely entertaining and gives a true picture of the life of a thru-hiker. I could hardly put it down until I finished reading every page. I hope I will have the time, the energy and the courage to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine one day just like he did.

Story Time on the A.T........2006-05-29

I loved the book. It is not a technical how-to book, but rather a story about adventure and people of the A.T. This story deals with that inner voice that we all have in dealing with our victories and defeats. If you are a married man, then you are well aquianted with the "LOOK". J.R. takes the LOOK, deals with the LOOK, and LOVES the LOOK and the LOOKER. Great advice for all men. However, a great read for both genders.

Entertaining Read for Family.......2005-11-30

Model-T takes you (and J.R.) along for quite a ride. This is the funniest and most captivating book on the subject I've read. There are a lot of details in the book--but that is what anyone who is really interested in thru-hiking wants to read! This is a very interesting window into his FIRST thru-hike that no doubt benefitted from his other 2 complete thru-hikes (a VERY rare accomplishment).

Mr. Tate's writing style is quite appealing, easy to read yet incorporating some of the most diverse vocabulary I've ever seen. At no point was I bored or tempted to skip ahead; most of the time I was wiping tears from my face (laughing too hard). When it ended I was tempted to read it again... but instead delighted in watching my wife read it (similar hysterical reactions--at one point, in an airport gate-waiting area several people asked if she was okay).

I've read some good books on the AT, but this is by far my favorite. Bryson's book was okay (the middle chapters in that book are painful to read at best), and managed to get the public/media's attention but if Walkin' on the Happy Side of Misery had received a tenth of that publicity I have no doubt that Mr. Tate would have inspired thousands of people each year to give it a shot. I want this one to become a movie.

MARS, not for everyone.......2003-07-18

Mars is in my opinion the best manga yet created (cine-manga not included) how ever, parents who buy this for young kids should be wary, there is alot of violence, curse words, sexual senes and references and some may find some of the past stories disturbing, however, one ur into it u cant get out, it has all the coponents of a A+ manga

Jack Kerouac and his circle of pals used to occupy the literary "high" ground when it came to legendary escapades involving strange and rowdy behavior from writerly types who managed nevertheless to produce enduring books and other good reading matter through the fog of illegal smoking materials, non-prescription mood-elevators, and cheap whiskey. The Beats occupied that position in the minds of the cognoscenti in places like New York City, that is. Now, however, bookish folk who favor the Lone Star State over the Left or Right Coasts can rejoice-Steve Davis has done America (as well as our good neighbors to the south and north) a long-overdue service by providing those among us who actually read books a fascinating and detailed (and at times downright hilarious) look into the lives and careers of a posse of self-described "Mad Dog" Texas scribes who, in the 1960s and after, have made Kerouac and his boys look like nothing so much as well-mannered cub scouts. Larry L. King, Bud Shrake, and Gary Cartwright are the true stars of this book, and if you don't recognize those names, you are evidently not from Texas-but shame on you, nonetheless. Peter Gent, Dan Jenkins, and the late Billie Lee Brammer round out the list of outlaws, but appearances by such luminaries as former Texas governor Ann Richards, C&W stars Jerry Jeff Walker and Willie Nelson, football legends Don Meredith and Tom Landry, not to mention Jack Ruby's star stripper Jada with her Girl Scout cookie tins filled with marijuana, are themselves worth the price of the book. Texas Literary Outlaws ought to top the New York Times' Best Seller list. It won't-it's far too well written. Believe it.

Deconstructing the 'Mad Dog' Six.......2004-06-22

Documenting and influencing the evolving Texas culture of the sixties, the six authors studied in Steven L. Davis's Texas Literary Outlaws were right at the center of the action. There for the Kennedy assassination, Lyndon Johnson's transformation from senator to president, the brawl over Jim Crow laws, the birth of Texas Monthly magazine, and Ann Richard's rise to prominence, these authors were practically inseparable from the issues they wrote about.

Davis deftly picks apart the knot of the Mad Dogs' relationships to their work and each other in what Patrick Beach of the Austin American-Statesman calls "a heroic work resting on a sturdy tripod of extensive scholarship, fluid writing and trenchant but bottomlessly humane criticism." This work is a great read for anyone interested in the rowdy days of Texas's recent history.
