Book Description
"The Sea at Mombasa is as blue as cornflower," wrote Isak Dinesen, "and, outside the inlet to the harbour, the long breakers of the Indian Ocean draw a thin crooked white line, and give out a low thunder even in the calmest weather." Vast, untamed, mysterious, and profoundly beautiful, Africa
has always exerted a powerful sway over its Western admirers. And the dual nature of the Dark Continent reflected in Dinesen's lines--a paradise with a dark, forbidding undercurrent--has for three centuries inspired what John A. Murray now reveals as a unique literary genre. In Wild Africa he
combines a diverse sampling from this rich trove of African nature and travel writing with traditional myths and stories in fashioning a book that brings to life the spirit of the African wilderness.
In these pages the reader will share the experiences of the most intrepid adventurers as they endure the weather (as hot as 137 Farenheit in the Sahara), the dangerous animals (lions, crocodiles, and cobras), parasites (tapeworms, leeches), and nature's most potent arsenal of biological
weaponry (cerebral malaria, sleeping sickness, dengue fever). The writings gathered in this book reflect not only these extremes of the land, but the extremes of human experience as well--or what Joseph Conrad described as the "joy, fear, sorrow, devotion, valour, rage" that is amplified in the
wilds of Africa. Here we follow John Barrow on his 1797 search for the unicorn he believed could be found in South Africa; watch as Dr. David Livingstone is mauled by a lion prior to his discovery of Victoria Falls ("besides crunching the bone into splinters, he left eleven teeth wounds in the
upper part of my arm"); and accompany Teddy Roosevelt on a 1909 safari in which 512 animals were killed for the Smithsonian's permanent collection.
The personalities we encounter are also unforgettable, from the formidable Scottish explorer Mungo Park, to the famed big-game hunter J.H. Patterson (whose fatal love triangle with Mr. and Mrs. Audley James Blyth was the basis for Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"), to
contemporary biologist Delia Owens (who protests the incursion into the Kalihari of would-be uranium miners). Murray seamlessly weaves these disparate voices into a passionate whole, a book which in the end becomes an eloquent plea for the further conservation of Africa's immense yet dwindling
natural resources.
Above all, it is the beauty of Africa that intrigues us most, the majesty of the Nile, the exotic wildlife of the Serengeti Plain, the gorillas in the mists of Rwanda. Wild Africa is a rare delight.

Europeans in Africa.......2006-09-24
This is an anthology organized by eras of Caucasian impact.
"1770 - 1885: The Age of Exploration" includes excerpts from such worthies as David Livingstone, Richard Burton and Mungo Park. The lively immediacy of these adventures reflects the daredevil personalities and arrogance of the times ("discovering" places well-known to the inhabitants and other non-western travelers) while fostering admiration for men who withstood life-threatening hardships for uncertain goals.
"Part II 1886 - 1956: The Age of Exploitation," contains pieces by Isak Dineson and Joseph Conrad as well as traditional African folktales and chronicles of hunting from Theodore Roosevelt and J.H. Patterson ("The Death of the First Man Eater").
Part III 1957 - 1992: The Age of Environmentalism" includes selections from Barry Lopez and Peter Matthiessen. Contrast the gruesome "A Baby Gorilla Captured Alive," 1861, with George B. Schaller's "In the Realm of the Mountain Gorilla," 1959 for a dramatic glimpse of changing attitudes over less than a century.
As with any anthology of such scope the reader will argue with selections and notice what's left out -- Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall to name just two. But Murray's choices are literate and stirringly evocative of the white man's impact on another people's continent.

You'll Be Inspired to Get a Life in CHICAGO!.......2006-08-19
I was thrilled when I discovered,Get a Life! In the City: Chicago.
As a native Chicagoan, I thought I'd exhausted all there was to do and soon developed a routine existence. Get a Life! In the City: Chicago, is wonderful, insightful resource and guidebook to help natives and those traveling to Chicago discover all there really is to. Plus, Jones provides thorough details and contact information for each venue, restaurant, etc. It's all there.
I'm really amped about visiting some of the places mentioned in Get a Life! In the City: Chicago, that I didn't know existed, and I know that you will be, too.
We have only one life, Get a Life! In the City: Chicago
will inspire you to live it the fullest (and then some!)
Highly-recommended!

THE book of EVERYTHING in Chicago!.......2006-06-09
I travel for business quite a bit and Chicago is one of the cities I spend a good deal of time in. I got tired of leaving my daily routines at home and was looking to make my trips to Chicago more enjoyable and wholesome. I was so excited to find this book, and more so to find a studio which offered yoga classes of the same style I take at home. I've begun to rely heavily on GET A LIFE prior to and during all of my trips to Chicago now. Next week I'd like to fit in a visit to the Chicago Botanic Gardens - and this winter, I'll take my skis and hook up with one of the local ski clubs! Thanks for this book, Sheena - now please write one which will help me find things to do in Boston, Seattle, and all the other places I travel to!

Book Description
" 'You and I are going to drive to Peter's house,' I shouted with ecstasy. 'You are going to zap him with a poisoned arrow and I'm going to live happily ever after!' I grabbed my car keys, flung on my black bomber jacket, and headed to my Volvo and destiny."
A.J. has two passions-photography and her crush on Peter Terris, the most popular guy in school. Enter Jonathan, a tiny cupid offering A. J. a wish in one of three categories: academics, art or romance. Without hesitating, A. J. chooses romance-despite her dream of getting into arts college. But magic can be unpredictable, and ultimately A.J. will have to decide what's worth fighting for: Peter's charmed love or the truth she can find through her camera lens and in herself.
"It's to Bauer's credit that this wacky ride through adolescent affairs of the heart never grows predictable. ...A fine romance with plenty of hitches." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Bauer's buoyant narrative will elicit chuckles as it delivers its message (thwonk!) with the accuracy of a well-aimed arrow from Cupid." (Publishers Weekly)

Be Careful What You Wish For.......2007-06-06
A.J. is an aspiring photographer with a great deal of talent. Her father taught her everything she knows, but now that she is in high school he is discouraging her from trying to make photography her life. He was burned by the profession when he was younger and tried to make a living out of making independent films. He realized it was no way to support himself and his young family, so he had to quit and go to work for an advertising agency. He worries that A.J. might be making the same mistake.
For her part, A.J. is determined to make photography into her life, but she is currently more concerned with her love life. It seems she is always falling for guys who are wrong for her--guys who don't appreciate her art and don't care much about her feelings. Now she has a huge crush on Peter, who happens to be gorgeous and dating someone else. A.J. wishes she could find a way to get Peter to like her and invite her to the big King of Hearts Valentine dance. She is miserable thinking about her dateless state.
Then, out of nowhere, A.J. finds a little stuffed cupid. It turns out the stuffed cupid is actually a real cupid, sent to help her out in some way. It can either help her out in her art, making her an even better photographer; help her in school, making her a better student; or help her in love. Despite the cupid, Jonathan's, better judgment, A.J. chooses to be helped in love, to have Peter fall madly in love with her.
But having a boy madly in love with her isn't as wonderful as A.J. had hoped. Peter still doesn't care about her art or her personality; he just cares about being with her every second and he is smothering her with attention. But what can be done now?
I thought A.J.'s character was really great. She was talented and pretty confident, and determined to get what she wanted. I really liked A.J.'s interaction with Jonathan, and the exasperation he had for her. I also liked A.J.'s parents and her best friend, who were all very interesting and supportive. However, I couldn't believe that A.J. could be so short-sighted and dumb about her choice. It seems like she should have been able to see what was coming.

The main character of this book is Allison Jean, "A.J.," McCreary, is a photographer high at school and is having a tremendous amount of trouble with her love life. Then, just a couple of days before Valentines Day and the King of Hearts Dance, she finds a cupid doll that magically comes to life. He claims that he can help A.J. in one of three ways: artistically, academically, and romantically. Without much thought, A.J. immediately chooses that he help her romantically and demands that Jonathon, the cupid, make her current crush, Peter, love her.
After Peter is shot with Jonathon's arrow, things seem to run smoothly, but A.J. soon gets annoyed at Peter's constant companionship. Finally A.J. gets really fed up with Peter and decides to call it quits at the biggest dance of the year, the King of Hearts Dance and finally learns what true love is all about.
I think this book was okay, but it was way too far-fetched for me. Who has ever heard of a cupid doll magically appearing out of now where and making your life all better? Only in your imagination. I would only recommend this book for middle school children who enjoy reading fantasy fiction.
Thwonk.......2006-10-10
This is a very cute book. I recommend it for anyone who has had that one crush who you think doesn't even know you exist. That's how it is for A.J. Now don't we wish we all had a little cupid of our own. The thing I didn't like about this book was how AJ found love then turned on it. This book takes a lot of time and understanding to read, I suggest if you don't like to read and just decided to read this book because it was the only one left on the shelf, find something new because this book may not be for you.
Predictable and cute.......2006-09-27
The love story bits and the "true love/true friendship" preachiness bugged me a little, but the fairy-tale-NOT Jonathan the Cupid was amusing. Parts of the plot have been rehashed many times in teen literature. The story really gets good when A.J., the main character, talks about her photography and her family problems-that is where the real heart and writing ability of Ms. Bauer come in. I can tell she did research on photography.... The one problem is, A.J. seems altogether too self-posessed in other matters to fall head-over-heels, stupidly in love with Peter Terris, etc, etc. It was a cute little fluffy book, perfect for reading on a stormy or wintry afternoon (it will only take about one afternoon, seriously). It won't inspire you to find true love, but it may make you want to buy a camera and start snapping off shots in the early morning light...
Thwonk.......2006-02-04
It is a very funny, cute book. I think it connects with a lot of teens these days, and how we feel about love. It makes you never want to put the book down! i luved it!

Windsor JR High school-SM.......2006-02-08
In the book, the main character (AJ McCreary) isn`t the most popular or the prettiest. She enjoys photography and plans on going to college for it, but lately she has been caught up with this most popular boy in school, Peter Terris. She isn`t doing to well in school because she is always dreaming about him. Sad thing is the only two men that love her that she knows of is her dog and her dad. Then one day AJ finds this little stuffed cupid in the road. She takes it home and it comes alive! The cupid tells her that she can either have help in love, education or art. Which one does she choose? Was it a good choice? I can`t tell.
I gave this book five stars because you can learn a lot from the book and the topics of the book realy appealed to me. I love art and I work hard for good grades and hey I am in 7th grade I know about wanting something you can`t have.

Book Description
This study of distribution, abundance and population size variation in animals (formerly regarded as pure ecological subjects) is presented in an evolutionary framework. Arguing that evolved characters of organisms such as morphology, behavior and life history influence their ecological relationships, this new conceptual framework is broadly relevant to ecologists, evolutionary biologists, behavioral scientists and entomologists.
Download Description
In Macroevolutionary Theory on Macroecological Patterns, Peter Price establishes a completely new vision of the central themes in ecology. For the first time in book form, the study of distribution, abundance, and population size variation in animals is cast in an evolutionary framework. The book argues that evolved characters of organisms such as morphology, behavior, and life history influence strongly their ecological relationships, including the way that populations fluctuate through time and space. The central ideas in the book are supported by data gathered from over 20 years of research, primarily into plant and herbivore interactions, concentrating on insects. The huge diversity of insect herbivores provides the immense comparative power necessary for a strong evolutionary study of ecological principles. The book is intended as essential reading for all researchers and students of ecology, evolutionary biology, and behavior, and for entomologists working in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry.
