Nothing makes me laugh harder........2007-02-24
I first met Georgia when I was a freshman in high school. She was shallow, bubbly, and everything I wasn't--obsessed with boys, looks, and parties. And I absolutely loved her.
my 14 yr old loves these books.......2007-01-27
got em for her for christmas and she devoured them in just a couple of days!
Confessions of Georgia Nicolson.......2006-02-20
I found these books to be light, fluffy, and enormously funny. They're in diary format, but you don't really notice that, and it adds to the charm of the books.
Many people dislike the books because of the light and fluffyness of the books - the lack of plot. These books make me laugh so often (no matter how many times I've read them) that I don't even notice, or care.
So if you're looking for a laugh, I definitely recommend these books.
And if you like these, I recommend Katie Maxwell's Emily Series.
Fabbity Fab.......2006-01-07
This series is not just for the teenage girls that its marketed for. I am 23 years old and my best friend and I absolutely love Georgia! Maybe its because it reminds us of us growing up, but whenever I read a Georgia book, I just can't stop laughing. Honestly, I laugh so hard that my husband has to come make sure I'm ok. For you parents out there, there aren't any bad words or sex scenes, its just the troubles that a typical, albit slightly crazy, teenage girl goes through. I would recommend this series to anyone.
luvv it.......2005-12-12
I absolutely love this series. When i read the first book it was for a book report. I immediately got hooked. Any girl that loves preteen comedy will love this book.

Ornithology
ASIN: 0125173660 |
Book Description
This book meets the demand for a comprehensive introduction to understanding the processes of population limitation. Recognized world-wide as a respected biologist and communicator, Dr. Ian Newton has now written a clear and detailed treatise on local scale population limiting factors in birds. It is based almost entirely on results from field studies, though it is set in a contemporary theoretical framework. The 16 chapters fall under three major section headings: Behavior and Density Regulation; Natural Limiting Factors; and Human Impacts.
Population Limitation in Birds serves as a needed resource expanding on Dr. David Lacks research in this area of ornithology in the 1950s. It includes numerous line diagrams and beautiful illustrations by acclaimed wildlife artist Keith Brockie.
Key Features
* Provides a sorely needed introduction to a long-established core subject in ornithology
* Focuses on local scale factors
* Written by a well-known biologist and effective communicator
* Includes numerous line diagrams and beautiful illustrations by acclaimed wildlife artist Keith Brockie

Interesting Piece of Americana.......2000-04-01
While vastly inferior to Jane Austen, who followed a few years later, Rowson does stand out as one of the better early-American writers. In a style foreshadowing Harriet Beecher Stowe, Rowson shows how life punishes vice. The second book, Lucy Temple, is less pedantic and more entertaining. This book is best for enthusiasts of early American Literature.

Essence With the Elixir of Enlightenment: The Diamond Approach to Inner Realization
ASIN: 0936713046
Release Date: 2000-09-05 |
Book Description
We live in a world of mystery, wonder, and beauty. But most of us seldom participate in this real world, being focused rather on the parts that are mostly strife, suffering, or meaninglessness. The situation is basically due to our not realizing and living our full human potential. This potential can be actualized by the realization and development of human essence. The human essence is the part of us that is innate and real, and which can participate in the real world. The series of books Diamond Heart are transcriptions of talks given by A. H. Almaas to inner work groups in Colorado and California.
Customer Reviews:
A Heart that shines........2002-09-13
This is the second book in A. H. Almaas's four-part Diamond Heart series. "We live in a world of mystery, wonder, and beauty," he observes in the Preface to this book, "but most of us seldom participate in this real world, being aware rather of a world that is mostly strife, suffering, or meaninglessness" (p. i). In the series of twelve inner-work teachings collected here (e.g., "Hanging Loose," "Acceptance," "Love," and "Being Oneself"), Almaas integrates Sufism, Zen and Vajrayana Buddhism with Gurdjieff and modern psychology into what he calls "the Diamond Approach" to self realization, and as the book's subtitle suggests, into "the freedom to be." This is a "Heart" that shines like a diamond.

Book Description
As was the case in World War II, one of the greatest threats to Britain during World War I was the German U-boat menace. This book traces the development of the U-boat threat from the Brandtaucher, designed by Wilhelm Bauer, the father of the German submarine arm, in 1850, through to the commissioning of Germany's first U-boat to go into service, the U-1, in 1906. It then covers the main types of World War I U-boat, detailing the operational history of the U-boat service in depth, with a particular focus on the campaigns in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, as well as the slow build up of anti-submarine measures by the allies.
Customer Reviews:
Notable by what is missing.......2002-04-17
U-Boats of the Kaiser's Navy is a brief survey of the early development of the German submarine service in 1906-1914 and operations in the First World War. Much of this thin volume is focused on the technical characteristics of the early U-Boats, and it does succeed in detailing the main features of the various early German submarine classes. Various sections cover the early development years, the various U-Boat classes, power plants, weapons and optics. German U-Boat operations in the First World War are covered in the last 13 pages of this volume, with sections covering one year at a time. The illustrations in the center of the volume mostly depict the various U-Boat classes, as well as a 2-page interior cutaway diagram of a Type UBIII submarine. Overall, U-Boats of the Kaiser's Navy is an adequate survey of its subject, but the coverage of some areas is marginal to nil.
A major deficiency of this volume is the lack of much statistical compilation effort by the author. While the author does mention the total number of U-Boats built, he fails to mention that a total of 178 were lost in the First World or that 5,000 crewmen were lost with those boats. The cause of U-Boat losses in the First World should also have been included, but it is not. The author does not ever bother to tally up total U-Boat achievements in either terms of tonnage or vessels sunk, nor are several top U-Boat commanders even mentioned. None of these statistics would have taken much space, just effort. Finally, the author's narrative ends at the armistice in 1918, without even bothering to mention the ultimate fate of the Kaiser's U-boats. The fact that Germany lost its entire U-Boat arm as a result of the war is not even mentioned.
The author provides very little assessment of the U-Boat campaign, but what he does provide is faulty; he notes, "the U-Bootwaffe [service] had represented Germany's only real chance to achieve a successful conclusion to the war." This assessment is ridiculous because it ignores the fact that Germany's idiotic decision to pursue unrestricted submarine warfare was the primary cause of American intervention in the war. Had the Kaiser forbidden unrestricted submarine warfare, the United States would have remained neutral and after 1917 Germany would have been fighting only a one-front war against the exhausted French and British armies. Without unrestricted U-boat warfare, Germany had a very real chance to achieve a military stalemate and a favorable negotiated peace in 1918. Furthermore, the great German U-boat campaign that the author promotes completely failed to stop the shipment of 2 million American doughboys to the Western Front; only 56 American servicemen were lost to U-Boat attacks. The author's final conclusion that the Kaiser's U-boats were not militarily defeated rings hollow; 50% of the boats commissioned were lost and while they inflicted serious damage, German U-boats failed to achieve their strategic objectives.

paranoia.......2003-12-24
.....A few word will suffice here: this book is a gutter raker and nothing more. A crying towl for all the inncocents of the 3rd world and 4th world who sit on their little thrones of garbage and blame the USA for not picking it up fast enough. Where was europe when kosovo was being destroyed? nowhere!! and who came to pull them out of their quandry..? The USA..Now this country is being blamed for being to rough, to Bad!! And where is europe when islamic killers blow up airplanes and synagogues? nowhere!!! Once again the europeans are afraid of offending their muslim masters (much like before the crusades). And, yes I am proud of our unilateralism, we are not an appendage of the UN with it's Treaty of the Month Club. Let's see how islam does with its honor killings and sharai before we sign away our rights with the weaklings of the world.
Derailing Democracy By David McGowan: A Review.......2003-12-08
When I read the synopsis of this book on the back cover I instantly knew this book would be interesting. Just as the title states this book is derailing democracy, sending it head over heels. Democracy would be an excellent form of government. Having the right to vote people into office instead of them just being appointed. All of the citizens having his or her own voice to change things for the better. In theory this sounds like the only truly fair and just government. When we think of the beautiful land we call the U.S.A we instantly associate it with freedom and justice for all with every man created equal. Derailing democracy shows the darker side and the price we pay for this "freedom". Whether it be giving the Taliban three million dollars in the 1980's, or basically hiring Saddam Huessien to wipe out Iran. Ironically many of the weapons that are killing the American soldiers now are either the left over landmines they planted decades ago or the weapons and ammunition they gave to Saddam and his men. But obviously the people of this country would not vote to give our enemies weapons to kill our other enemies, it doesn't make sense. What David McGowan shows us is that there are many ways to get around the whole democracy idea. For example the government tries to "market" the bill they want passed as something that will benefit the general public. For example McGowan writes, "You may have noticed that many of the motorists you see pulled over on the side of the highway are black or Hispanic. You may have attributed to this to some kind of unspoken law-enforcement racism. You may be surprised to learn that it's the result of a federal program. Called Operation Pipeline"
Page 1
Page 2
(McGowan 69).
Another example could be tax hikes to fund "anti-terrorism", with the majority of the money actually going to fund the bombing in Kosovo and Iraq. In 1997 President Bill Clinton said to the American public, with no emotion, that they were dropping serious amounts of bombs onto the city of Kosovo. No more than an hour later he was on the news again, with deep shame and sympathy, to alert the public about the shooting at Columbine High School. The man felt more emotion for the small few who perished in the high school as compared to the small catastrophe he was creating overseas. But McGowan shows us that to the Government deaths are all just numbers, and death won't stand in the way of conquering a weaker country. And that's basically what it all comes down to, we're stronger than you and you have something that is valuable to us, so we're going to beat you up and take it. Yeah, make sure to get their lunch money too.
Another area of study in this book is racial issues, mostly within the judicial system. An interesting fact stated in this book says that "approximately 80% of the young black men under age 35 have a criminal record" (70). I am immersed in this urban culture daily and I definitely don't believe that 80 per cent of the African Americans I see have done anything to deserve a criminal record. "Blacks and whites in the U.S.A. are the victims of murder in almost equal numbers, yet 82 per cent of prisoners executed since 1977 were convicted of the murder of a white person...Blacks make up just 12 per cent of the country's population, but 42 per cent of the nation's condemned prisoners. In early 1998, of the 26 people under federal sentence of death (military and civilian), only five prisoners were white" (72). According to these facts it becomes more and more
Page 3
clear to me that we as a country are still in the same old mindset that we were over 50 years ago. No matter what anyone says our government is still racially bias to white people. I don't believe that even a quarter of the citizens of this country are racist. If we have all power and control of our democratic government then why is the government racist and we are not? Perhaps the people who are racist have just fallen under the subliminal propaganda of the racist government.
With all of the anti-drug propaganda it would surprise you to hear that "In 1996, the San Jose Mercury News ignited a firestorm of protest when it ran a series of articles by investigative journalist Gary Webb that seemed to provide substantial evidence of U.S. government complicity in drug trafficking. In an effort to circumvent a congressional ban and provide illegal funding for the Nicaraguan Contras, the CIA had, it was alleged, allowed and even assisted the trafficking of massive amounts of cocaine into this country" (104). With all of the anti-drug commercials I was under the impression that the government wanted to stop drug use, not encourage it. But I suppose it did help out the economy. And who knows, maybe because the government sold drugs your taxes didn't rise.
In conclusion David McGowan doesn't try to mince words here. He clearly states many facts that he has collected from different sources. All of which are documented and respected. I believe that if every American would just read a few of the facts something good could happen. Basically McGowan states that this democracy is starting to look more and more like a hypocrisy, resorting to tactics normally reserved for dictatorships. Lets face it, politicians lie, McGowan just points that out. He never once
Page 4
tries to force his views, he instead encourages freedom of thought.
Exposing gross hypocrisy and injustices.......2003-11-04
Packed with numerous essential facts, this book provides a detailed account of serious transgressions and violations of international law perpetrated by the U.S. government, the facts which can be ignored and dismissed only by jingoists. This book reveals an extremely flawed foreign policy of the United States. McGowan argues that the U.S. foreign policy makers seek to protect strategic and economic interests of the U.S. at any cost, even if many innocent people have to be sacrificed, that is as long as they are not Americans. According to McGowan, U.S. has shown no signs that it cares about the poor, the victimized and the oppressed. On the contrary, U.S. has consistently and systematically opposed every U.N. resolution stipulating a right to food and acknowledging children's rights and the rights of Palestinians. Morever, U.S. has vetoed every U.N. resolution calling for a condemnation of Israeli human rights violations. No one seems to wonder why no U.N. inspectors have been allowed to enter the facilities in Israel in which weapons of mass destruction have been produced. Why does not the U.S. coerce Israel to cooperate with the U.N.? Why does the U.S. knowingly hamper development of poor countries? Why does not the U.S. ratify the agreement banning the use of chemical and biological weapons? Why does the U.S. collaborate with terrorists when it serves the interests of the U.S.? This book divulges unfathomable injustices and gross violations of international law perpatrated by the only remaining superpower in the world. Even though this book contains a great number of important facts, it lacks a detailed analysis and for that reason I gave it four stars. For an elaborate and meticulous analysis of the U.S. foreign policy, I strongly recommend a book called Why do people hate America by Ziauddin Sardar and Merryl Wyn Davies; irrefutably the best book on the subject matter.
From the Parochial to the Global.......2001-12-28
Too often people become tragically insulated from the global picture by reading the sanitized mainstream media publications and watching equally sanitized news programs. David McGowan endeavors to expose willing Americans to the global picture. Relying significantly on reports from Amnesty International and statements from sources outside the sanitized mainstream, McGowan lays out his case. From global warning to crime and punishment, McGowan cites sources who possess the bold integrity to criticize in the expectation of helping build a stronger America.
The Jeanne Kirkpatrick who mouthed the famous "Blame America first" quote would greet this book with revulsion. So will others who like to sugar coat the American political scene with Reagan style "Morning in America" pieties and admonitions to citizens to either "Love America or leave it!" McGowan believes, as do many of us, that to build a stronger country we must initially face up to problems that require corrective action. It would be nice to breathe cleaner air and provide greater numbers of Americans with a chance to live at a healthier, more prosperous level. We must pursue these goals rather than live in an insulated society devoid of critical commentary where people mouth pious platitudes to the status quo.
Scary - But A Must Read & Excellent Reference Resource.......2001-10-26
I grew up believing that my country's government was good and could be trusted to do what was right, and it hurts to learn that that is no longer so (if it ever was). I trusted Ted Koppel and Peter Jennings and Mike Wallace and Hugh Downs and others. Now I learn on page 13 that the CIA owns "everyone of any significance in the major media."
I learn that the country I have been and want to be proud of is a rogue state that has one of the world's worst records on human rights. I learn about the many, many steps our executive, legislative, and judicial branches have taken to chip away at our civil rights and our civil liberties. I learn that my country is well on the way to becoming a police state.
I don't want to believe all the terrible things McGowan tells about my country, but he has carefully documented what he says, so that denial is not rationally possible. I wish this book were a compendium of vicious lies, but unfortunately it is a compendium of appalling facts. Ignorance of these awful facts may be bliss, but I, for one, don't care for the idea of living in a fool's paradise.
Every patriotic American should read this book. Maybe, just maybe, someone smarter than I will figure out a way to get this country back on the right track. Yes, it is "my country, right or wrong," but I happen to know the rest of that quote: "when right to keep it right, when wrong to make it right."
If you, too, are a patriotic American, reading this book will make you feel very angry and frustrated at some of the things our country has done and is still doing. But if you (singular and plural) can channel that anger into a search for a way to set our country right, and if some one or more of us succeed -- then it will be more than worth the pain we suffer.

Book Description
From the Russian Mafia in Siberia to freelance poachers in Thailand, Black Market is an unforgettable journey inside the grisly Endangered Species Trade, where unsanctioned global trafficking of rhino horn, tiger bone, ivory and rare birds has become a profitable industry for sophisticated organized crime networks and unscrupulous buyers around the world. Following in the footsteps of celebrity advocates Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, and Angelina Jolie, Black Market exposes the unsettling truth about the cruel exploitation and bureaucratic indifference surrounding the multibillion-dollar underground industry that drives wildlife exploitation. Includes over 100 gripping black and white and color photographs with never-before-seen aspects of the illegal trade, up-close photojournalism uncovering illegal activities of poachers, traders and wildlife enforcement agencies, heroic tales of impassioned conservation efforts and the valiant individuals and organizations battling to save the world’s precious wildlife heritage.
Customer Reviews:
great photos and stories.......2006-12-13
This is a superb book with easily readable text, tragic photos, and compelling stories. It has sections that alternatively focus on different geographic locations, animals, and types of problems. It also discusses some of the history of the wildlife trade.
If there is a downside, it is that the book is depressing because of the scale of destruction going on. In fact, the wildlife trade is one of the largest underground markets, second only to the drug trade. But the book is a great attempt to shed more light on this dark subject.
Highly recommended.......2005-10-25
Black Market is resoundingly successful in portraying the scale of the trade in endangered species in Asia - its roots, its cancerous growth and its callousness. Equally importantly, it shows how and why the trade can exist.
What makes the book exceptional is that it is written not by an angry protester, but by a skilled journalist intent on telling the story as it is, and as accurately as possible. The book's author is not only a widely recognized photographer and journalist, but also a hard nosed economist with decades of experience in Asia. That he has managed to penetrate this black market, and emerge not only with gripping accounts of the trade but with photographs of it and the crucial local understanding to interpret its lifelines, makes for an educating read.
Through a predominant use of black and white photography, the author ties the present to the past, and living traditions to ancient culture. Monochrome images portray a black trade. Colour, what we stand to lose.
GREAT Book About a Sad Reality.......2005-10-25
The books' title speaks for itself. It is very well done and includes spectacular images, which, unfortunately are often disturbing to look at (not too graphic though). Considering the nature of the book, it is still a phenomenal read with great insight. Also, the foward is written by Jane Goodall and she just kicks a$$!!
Another book to definitely check out (and couldn't recommend any other book more) is "Priceless: The Vanishing Beauty of a Fragile Planet" by Bradley Trevor Greive. It's a book that everyone should have.
