5 out of 5 stars Eight men of the wild.......2002-05-06

Jim dale Vickery profiles eight men who championed wildlife conservation, preservation, and environmentalism: Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), John Muir (1838-1914), Robert W. Service (1874-1958), Bob Marshall (1902-1939), Aldo Leopold (1887-1948), Olaus Johan Murie (1889-1963), Calvin Rutstrum (1895-1982), and Sigurd F. Olson (1899-1982). If you're an avid nature fan yourself, you've probably read about some of these men in other books. And yet, here each chapter is more than mere biography. Vickery highlights personal details that bring these men to life again, and we see not just the individuals, but also the natural places that mattered the most to them. We hear what they had to say about those places in their own words. Coincidentally -- or, not -- each of the eight spent at least a little time in Vickery's native Minnesota, and so it is from an additional love of his own land that the author relates the stories. Writers are always advised to write what they know, and that knowledge comes through in this book. An engaging addition to the environmentalist's bookshelf. Finding a used copy is well worth the search.

1 out of 5 stars Spend a week with a book and you really get to know it.......2007-09-16

My husband and I did a New England driving tour based on this book. I'd liked Frommer books before so basically used this book and the web (including the digital version of this book) to plan the trip. Not such a good idea.

There are lots of errors/difficulties with the book...just a few examples:
*Listings of lunch places that have NEVER served lunch (and you show up and the guy yells at you and has never heard of Frommers and oh by the way you're 20 minutes from the next location...and in all honesty, no one wants to be yelled at when they're on vacation).
*Dinner places that have closed down
*Maps that show roads that don't exist or that don't show key roads that you need
*Out of date info on hotels (including phone numbers)

I started keeping track and realized it wasn't my job to edit this book. But it was disappointing. It was still a great vacation and I would heartily recommend the vacation...but not the book.

3 out of 5 stars Skimpy on New Hampshire .......2007-05-31

This travel guide is heavily weighted toward Massachussetts and very thin on New Hampshire, and somewhat thin on Maine. In hindsight consider reviewing some of the other New England Guides such as Fodor's and Lonely Planet before considering this one. A bit of a disappointment.

        4 out of 5 stars Good overall.......2005-10-22

We bought the Mobile book, the "Everything" book and this book. Of the three, this had the most detailed information. The maps are not great but the rest of the book makes up for that. The regional grouping was a great help.

5 out of 5 stars A travel guide for readers.......2002-10-15

Let's face it; most travel books are a glance-and-go proposition. Most of them do a passable job providing key information, but they aren't exactly a pleasure to read. Frommer's New England 2003 changes all that. Not only are the cititations clear, correct, and complete, many of them are laugh-out-loud funny or wickedly sly. At the end of a busy day on the road, I actually found myself reading the guide for fun (while happily settled in one of the recommended accommodations).A literate guide obviously written by folks in the know.

Great for a recent trip to Boston and Newport, RI.

The tips on what to see and what to avoid were dead on.

5 out of 5 stars Visiting Boston, buy a travel guide.......2004-11-21

I have been to Boston twice within the past year. I absolutely love the city and am seriously considering a move their one day. I bought this travel guide before my second trip. (I wish I had read it before the first trip) The guide helped a lot, but it seems to be biased in favor of its advertising. I did, however, learn a lot more about the city after reading it. The book is definitely worth the money, but my suggestion is that if you are going to spend $2000 on a vacation, buy two or three different travel guides and compare notes. I would also suggest "TimeOut Boston" for a more edgy view of the city.

        4 out of 5 stars A fine book.......2002-04-11

This is my first Frommer's guide book. The map is great and better than Fodor's. The accomodation section is definitely the best part of the whole book. Arthur Frommer is really a penny pincher. For twenty something travelers who want to go the night spots will have to ask around or go with Lonely Planet. This book is a 5 star for the budget consicious older folks and anybody traveling with families.

        Product Description

You are flying through space -- past Mars, Jupiter and Saturn -- toward the third planet from the star Altair. You descend to a strange world of deserted cities, glowing caves and man-eating plants. You are here to find the source of the mysterious signals being transmitted to earth. Depending on how you decide to go about your search, you could be captured by alien beings, flung millions of years into the future through a time warp, or you could witness the creation of the universe.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious aliens, science and the great Dr. Vivaldi.......2005-04-26

I adore Dr. Vivaldi, one of the strongest female figures in fiction I saw growing up. The crew of the intrepid expedition encounters all kinds of aliens in a multitude of endings. Edward Packard loves adventure, and although this is no "Hyperspace" in terms of aliens, it's just terrific.

2 out of 5 stars The Third Planet From Altair.......2005-04-01

Like most Choose Your Own Adventure books the choices you made don't always result in a way that makes sense. But this book makes more sense than most as you can, if you pick correctly, end up on the planet Altair.
Earth has detected messages from outer space. The source happens to be from the third planet in orbit around Altair, a yellow-white star 16 light years away. The messages repeat themselves and are from an intelligent race but nobody can understand them.
You, and a three others, are selected to take the spaceship, the Aloha, to seek out who, or what, is sending the messages.

3 out of 5 stars Packard's version of 'Space and Beyond'.......2005-01-07

This is not among Edward's Packard's finest works, but it's still a good read. There is more of a fast and frenzied pace on this one compared to the more psychological 'Space and Beyond'. You find yourself being the tie breaker to critical decisions which could mean survival and sudden death aboard the spaceship. Some of the endings are really creative such as when your spaceship runs into it's own weapons after firing them at hyperspeed. Some of the other endings are abrupt and will leave you scratching your head. I actually reached the planet Altair but lost contact with the mothership. So I was sucked on board an alien craft. The friendly aliens came up to greet me and it was the end. Shrug. At least this book, unlike 'Space and Beyond', allowed the reader to, at least, reach the third planet of Altair. It was damn near impossible to reach at least one of the planets on 'space and beyond'

        4 out of 5 stars Exciting discoveries.......2000-03-16

I'm glad that Edward Packard allowed himself to do an outer space adventure so early in this series (#7) when his colleague, R.A. Montgomery, ahd already written "Space and Beyond" as #4. Montgomery's work was pretty incoherent, but this one offers a consistent tone and unified set of plots that make it among the better of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" games. There is a pervasive weird atmosphere in this one that I rather like.

3 out of 5 stars A must for someone who likes to explore new stuff........1999-07-10

I thought this book was really interesting because you get to explore a new planet in another galaxy. This book also had a lot of adventures that were jammed packed with exploring and meeting new things.

                    Book Description

The book provides an introduction to stratification theory leading the reader up to modern research topics in the field. The first part presents the basics of stratification theory, in particular the Whitney conditions and Mather's control theory, and introduces the notion of a smooth structure. Moreover, it explains how one can use smooth structures to transfer differential geometric and analytic methods from the arena of manifolds to stratified spaces. In the second part the methods established in the first part are applied to particular classes of stratified spaces like for example orbit spaces. Then a new de Rham theory for stratified spaces is established and finally the Hochschild (co)homology theory of smooth functions on certain classes of stratified spaces is studied. The book should be accessible to readers acquainted with the basics of topology, analysis and differential geometry.

                      Book Description

In 1961 Robinson introduced an entirely new version of the theory of infinitesimals, which he called `Nonstandard analysis'. `Nonstandard' here refers to the nature of new fields of numbers as defined by nonstandard models of the first-order theory of the reals. This system of numbers was closely related to the ring of Schmieden and Laugwitz, developed independently a few years earlier. During the last thirty years the use of nonstandard models in mathematics has taken its rightful place among the various methods employed by mathematicians. The contributions in this volume have been selected to present a panoramic view of the various directions in which nonstandard analysis is advancing, thus serving as a source of inspiration for future research. Papers have been grouped in sections dealing with analysis, topology and topological groups; probability theory; and mathematical physics. This volume can be used as a complementary text to courses in nonstandard analysis, and will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in both pure and applied mathematics and physics.

                                Book Description

Cockroft, a faded composer and socialite, lives in self-imposed exile and fantasizes of true love and extravagant suicides. Rattling around his dilapidated farmhouse in the Italian countryside, his only constant source of company is the ever-loyal Timoleon Vieta, a mongrel with the most beautiful eyes. When a handsome but surly individual arrives on the scene, Cockroft is forced to choose between his dog and this new arrival. He abandons Timoleon outside Rome's Colosseum, where the dog begins the long journey home.
In this acclaimed novel, Dan Rhodes, one of Granta's Best Young British Novelists, has created a tragicomic work of macabre beauty that both amuses and moves in equal measure.

OK, we get it: man's sudden, devisive cruelty to man(and dog)[If you're moved by this sort of emotional outlook, see the WW II setting movie, "The Victors"]. Proves writer's immaturity by copying a storyline as old as novel writing itself; only in this case it seems to imply an underlying psycho-homosexual conflict. Is the author revealing his inner psyche?- who cares?
This book makes a strong case for movie type "ratings" for books. If we had let our pre-teen kids read this, we feel we would have a strong case against ourselves for child-abuse. Shame on every one of the reviewers for the elite and venerated newspapers who make this "Romance novel" sound as if it were a young child's "rainy-day" reader. (or would that be you, Mr. Publisher, for purposefully taking these blurbs out-of-context?)
Some might call me a "conspiriacy nut", but I can't help deducing the author's sole intent for this book: could it have been to deceive the heterosexual community and extract a unknowing profit for contribution to some Gay organization? Before you Hetero-phobes out there accuse me of Homophobia- I don't care about anyone's sexual habits, especially if I don't even know you. If this aspect of this book were revealed; fine,-NO PROBLEM. In a perfect, non-monetary driven legal system, they would libel for FRAUD!

Suggestion to some of you previous reviewers who agree with me: don't throw this book out; return it to the big "mall" book store, make sure you speak to the manager and demand a refund. If they refuse, tell them you will buy 2 copies on your credit card and then refuse to pay it. When it hits them in the pocketbook, they'll get the message.

Dan Rhodes has a habit of writing excellent short books that completely polarise his audience - they either get it or they don't. If you get it, you'll love it. And you'll probably get it if you like your humour dark and your literary forms twisted in surprising ways.

For me this book was surprisingly moving, but I don't think it's for everybody. However, if you look for the good behind all the darkness I think you can see it - this book is an inversion for a reason. Read it and you may see what I mean.

                                Or not.

This book sucks. It has absolutely no redeeming qualities. The main character is a jerk and is easily manipulated. There is certainly nothing sentimental about the journey. I wish I had never read the thing because it is so disturbing I will have trouble getting it out of my mind.

Mr. Rhodes--chocolate is horrible for dogs; essentially poisonous. Throughout the book, the dog is repeatedly rewarded with chocolate. Why?

I wanted to like this book. The dog was loveable, but his 'master,' Cockroft, was such a despicable character, I nearly put the book down before I was halfway through. Cockrofts sexual escapades and thoughts reflecting his low self esteem take precedence over anything else. Timoleon Vieta's journeys away from his master give the reader glimpses into the lives of others--some of these allowed me to continue reading, hoping for something to tie it all in. But all in all the book left me unfulfilled and irritated with the ending.
