101 Great Science Experiments
ASIN: 0789404664 |
Amazon.com
Just over 100 hands-on experiments in nine categories teach kids about the marvels of the natural world, from the murky depths of ponds to the sappy inner workings of trees to the wonders of the human body. Each step-by-step activity is easy to follow, requiring simple materials that can be found at home or easily acquired. Using balloons, water, and a fish tank, readers can make a model that resembles a group of animal cells living together. With nothing but their own two hands, young scientists can discover the connection between blood flow and gravity. And with a mushroom, a bowl, and some poster board, anyone can make a beautiful spore print. Crisp, vivid photos and drawings illustrate each stage of every activity, and cautionary notes and symbols are included for steps that require extra assistance from an adult.
David Burnie, distinguished author of many of Dorling Kindersley's award-winning resource books on nature, including How Nature Works, makes natural science more fun than any reluctant science student would ever have imagined. In spite of themselves, young readers of this big, handsome book will soon understand basic principles of nature and be inspired to explore far beyond the classroom. Ready for more? Try DK's 101 Great Science Experiments. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:
this book is awesome!.......2005-01-15
I would give it 6 stars if I could. The full-color photographs help you visualize the materials you need for the experiments. This is a great book for bored kids in the summertime, because a lot of the experiments involve bugs and the outdoors, but also, there are things that two kids could do on a rainy day, especially the experiments in the chapter called "The Human Body."
Book Description
Science writer Neil Ardley shows how you can use everyday objects to explore the basic principles of science with 101 exciting step-by-step experiments that are safe and easy to do at home.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-01-15
Great book filled with doable projects for children with and without adult supervision. Super learning tool.
Great fun in science!.......2005-11-10
This is a big, colorful, fun science book. It is full of fun practical science demonstrations, many of which can be done with common household items. This book is at a level that young gradeschoolers can understand, and covers science topics as high as middle school levels. It covers eleven different areas from air and gases to motion and machines. I have done many of these projects with my children. I even used the "Make a Rainbow" demo from the Color section in my Sunday school class while teaching about Noah. This book is a great addition to a homeschool library.
Looks great, but..........2003-02-23
The pictures in this book are wonderful, however, our success rate is 0.5 out of 4 for the experiments. I am sure many of the experiments will work, but not the ones we selected. Many of the experiments are quite elaborate, so unless your child is very ambititous, you will be doing quite alot of work.
101 Great Science Experiments.......2002-04-26
My 8 year old daughter borrowed this book from the school library and my kitchen hasn't been the same ever since. She has turned into a regular scientist. This book is FULL of real life pictures and NOT drawings. It is a large size book so it is even easier for her to read. She made a thermometer with a clear shampoo bottle, water, food coloring, and a straw. When she witnessed the water rising and falling through the staw she started screaming,"I'm a genius, I'm a genius." This book is very kid friendly and shows how to do experiments step by step with a real life picture for each step. It even shows how to make a real camera with a paper towel tube, tussue box and magnifying glass. One of my favorite experiments is how to make your own flashlight with batteries, an empty bottle, aluminum foil, and a small bulb.
Book Description
From Philadelphia to the Amish country, this all-new guide to cycling eastern Pennsylvania's scenic roads includes tours for both road and mountain bikes. Patricia Vance has explored hundreds of miles of roads in eastern Pennsylvania to find the most scenic, uncrowded, and enjoyable cycling on both paved and dirt roads.
Areas covered include:
Philadelphia
Valley Forge
The Brandywine River Valley
Bucks County
The Poconos
The Endless Mountains
Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Gettysburg
Rides range in length from a 10-mile spin through the row houses of Old City Philadelphia to a 55-mile ramble in the rolling hills of the Pocono Mountains. Each chapter includes a detailed map, mile-by-mile tour directions, and information on mileage, terrain, and difficulty, as well as nearby bicycle rental and repair shops. An overview chart at the beginning of the book provides information at a glance to help you choose a tour. And throughout, Vance provides fascinating commentary on the history and culture of this picturesque region. 25 black & white photographs, 26 maps.
Customer Reviews:
this could be so much more user friendly than it is.......2007-05-29
I've enjoyed using this book; I have been on about five of the suggested rides, and enjoyed them all. In some cases they made me aware of areas of the region that I had ignored, and so I'm very grateful to the author. And I plan to buy the guides to adjacent regions as well.
So what follows is intended as very friendly constructive criticism, in hopes of a second edition, and perhaps general improvement of the series.
First, PLEASE could the maps not be detailed. Yesterday we tried the Ringing Rocks route. The instructions all depend on knowing the names of particular roads (all, for a miracle, clearly marked by the highway department) but those names are mostly NOT on the map. So it's very hard to know where you are. In this case we wanted to turn back half way, and joint the canal in the middle of the route instead of doing the whole 26 miles, but there was no indication on map of what the names of the relevant roads are.
Second, and I know this is hard in all such matters, but please write the directions for getting to the starting place in such a way that someone coming for the first time will absolutely get a good start. For example, in the Ringing Rocks instruction, why not say "there's an enormous white Baptist church where Cafferty Rd meets PA 32. And tell us which way to go in starting out: "Start at the parking lot" is much more helpful if you say where to go (North ? south?)
I'm thinking of getting a GPS to complement the book. But in a perfect world, especially for beginners, that surely shouldn't be necessary.
Third, why not make clear which rides can easily be shortened. The Ringing Rocks route can easily be two rides of half the distance, but only the map (inadequate, see above) makes that clear. The Delaware River Canal Towpath Route never even mentions (and it's not marked on the map) that there are places to cross which, again, can make the ride into a series of much shorter ones.
The book is clearly intended for beginners. We get a guide to biking in Center City Philadelphia, and we're told about Fairmount Park and the Schylkill. So why not offer as many short rides as possible??

A Sudden Silence.......2006-11-15
Bryan and Jesse were forced to walk home from a party. They had gotten a ride from there friend, but he got drunk and passed out. Bryan(the main character) is deaf because his mom had the Germen measles when she was pregnant. Brian did not feel the vibrations of a car or see one coming until it was too late, so he got hit by a drunk driver while crossing the highway. While Bryan was being hit his brown leather loafer came off and got stuck on the drunk driver's windshield. It was a hit and run so Jesse and Chloe(Bryan's girl friend) dedicated their time to trying to find Bryan's killer.
Hit and Run.......2006-11-15
"A Sudden Silence" By Eve Bunting is a tension filled, mysterious book. It all begins back when Jesse Harmon and His brother Bry are on there way back from a party. Jesse and Bry are walking on the side of the highway when Jesse screams to Bry to move out of the way of the car. Bry does not hear him because he is deaf. It was a drunk driver. Chloe who is "Bry's girl" has invited me over to make posters to help find who killed Bry. Read to find out what happens with Jesse and Chloe. But more importantly read to find out who killed Bry.
A Sudden Silence.......2006-11-14
"A Sudden Silence" by Eve Bunting is a great, fast paced, action-packed book. I liked it very much. In this novel, a car, driven by a drunk driver, hit Jesse Harmon's brother, Bry, and then sped away. Jesse jumps off to the side and yells to his deaf brother, who obviously can't hear him. After all this happens, Jesse feels a ton of grief and guilt because he could have saved his brother and did not. Jesse and Chloe, Bry's girlfriend, are determined to find the hit and run driver. What follows is a novel full of unexpected subplots and twists which will keep you hooked until the very end.
A Sudden Silence.......2005-04-15
Imagine walking with your brother and his "girl" on a lonely highway. And all of a sudden your brother is run over by a car. And you never saw who was in that car.
That is what happens in the book A Sudden Silence by Eve Bunting. Jesse, the main character, loses his brother, Bry, to someone who decided to drink and drive. Now Jesse is stuck trying to remember what the car looked like and find out who was in it. With the help of Bry's "girl" they try to find the person who was responsible for Bry's death. But they struggle trying to find the right person. Is it someone they know? Or is it someone they have never met before? You will find in this book that these people go through lots of searching but in the end they find out who it really was. Jesse thought it would solve all his emptiness to find out who the real person was but you will be surprised to see what happens.
This book is filled with lots of mystery and non-stopping suspense. When I read this book I just couldn't stop reading it until I was finished. It's a book that will keep you thinking before one event leads to the next. I really liked this book because it's not obvious who the actually killer is, so it's fun to try to figure out in the process of everything that's going on. I recommend this book for age 11 and up. It's a great book that is very realistic and easy to imagine yourself in. So to find out the big mystery of a tragic accident read this book, A Sudden Silence.
AHA.......2001-01-16
A Sudden Silence, by Eve Bunting, is a love story with a criminal background. There are interesting in a, in some scenes, suspensful plot. But in first place it is a love story about the relationship between a girl and a boy, going together through the difficults of their life. The main themes are alcohol consum, loss of a family member and friendship. The book is suitable for reading in class. Much fun !

Book Description
By bringing together the voices of Native American women writers across time, regions, and tribes, this collection makes visible a dynamic tradition of women's wisdom and storytelling. From early legends to present-day fiction and poetry, this tradition emphasizes women's spiritual connection to the natural world and their contributions to tribal and familial community. Central to women's strength is the role of animal figures-Coyote, Owl, Beaver and Bear-who act as guides, helpers, and personal totems, appearing unexpectedly in the modern urban landscape as well as being a constant presence in nature.
The work of more than forty authors appears in this volume, representing tribes and regions extending over most of the U.S. and parts of Canada. Among the authors included are Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Leslie Marmon Silko, Paula Gunn Allen, Linda Hogan and Beth Brant, along with writers whose work appears here for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Architypal Stories for Living.......2001-06-18
This book brings to our lives the anchient art of story-telling as is only seen in cultures living near the Earth. The stories have an ancient flavor and yet speak to our busy soul-serching lives today. This is a book that will inspire group discussion and personal growth as Estes' works have done. Women will be retelling these symbolic stories given us by the native women of our county as they have with "Women Who Run With the Wolves." This is a great book for women's circles and self-exploration groups wanting short stories with deep meaning and impact. I have enjoyed the book greatly and retell the stories in speaking engagements. The depth, humor and poignancy of these tales will stay with readers long after finishing the book.
Book Description
Forgetting that it is hunting season, the author goes for a hike in the La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah, and encounters hunters everywhere. As she searches for a place to walk in solitude, the attitudes and behavior of the hunters she encounters are deeply disturbing, triggering episodes of surreal mental states bordering on madness. At the same time, these states heighten her senses to allow extraordinarily intense perceptions, which she has recaptured vividly in this work of creative nonfiction. In the context of writing about this experience McConnel compares Christian vs. Pagan values and, with impressive fairness considering the intensity of her experience, comes to a surprising conclusion.
Alex Blackburn, editor of Writer's Forum, has commented: "The writing in Eye of the Beholder is precise, beautiful, forceful, and sincere. Patricia McConnel's use of images from myth and prehistoric art enhances the power of her voice; her technique of slipping in and out of dream and reality is quite astonishing."
Customer Reviews:
Stunning comparison of Pagan/Christian views of deer hunting, in beautifully rendered setting.......2006-04-18
Patricia McConnel writes an account of the day she wandered into the mountains during deer hunting season. Her experiences stretch her tolerance to breaking point, and break she does, into hallucinations intruding themselves into each encounter with the hunters or with what they leave behind, and with a buck deer as well. She way she handles this in the book is gifted. Her descriptions of the country are as good as any nature writing I've ever seen. Beautiful. I love this book and reread it regularly.
