When the distinguished naturalist Archie Carr first ranged through the Florida marshes, swamps, and hammocks, the state was a paradise for biologists, a relatively unexplored Eden. Florida would change greatly. And for five decades, Carr, a professor of zoology at the University of Florida who died in 1987, would write about its natural beauty and the encroachments upon it. More than two dozen essays in this collection show his writing at its best. "Carr's essays of Florida shine with charm, grandeur, and a childlike delight. This is the writing not only of a brilliant naturalist, but of a poet and of a journalist. It stands as a memoir to a breathtaking paradise, and as an eloquent call to save what's left of it." --Carl Hiaasen

5 out of 5 stars You should read this book!.......2001-05-28

Archie Carr was a renowned naturalist and perhaps the world's expert on marine turtles. He wrote with a lyrical simplicity that reflects the south of the early- and mid-20th century. His elegant descriptions of animals and his understated wit reveal his deep involvement with the natural world and the human processes that are now shaping it. Archie knew Florida like a native and could describe it like no one else of his generation.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty okay book..........2007-05-16

This book was okay for me. I found the synoposis to be really off. Only about half of it had anything to do with Annie's romance with the Northern soldier, and it wasn't well developed at all. If you like reading about war strategies and locations, pick it up! But don't read it for the romance. I couldn't say I would read this book again.

3 out of 5 stars it was a decent read.......2007-01-08

I liked this book. That said, I didn't love this book. The main character is likeable, and behaves in a manner true to her age. It seems to me that some of the other characters were templates, and bordered on stereotypes. The mother is Melanie, straight off of the plantation, and the black housewoman will definitely have you thinking that Annie lives at Tara. Annie loses a potential suitor, a young boy as sweet as Scarlett's first husband. The story is not Gone With The Wind, but you will hear echoes of Mitchell while you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Its really really good.......2006-08-03

This book really brings you into the life of a young woman in the civil war. It shows you alot of the horrible things that went on, brothers fighting brothers, and shows and truly devastating it was. And how comitted some people were. It's not entirely fiction. Alot of the characters in this book were real people.
If your not really a history person (believe me, i really wasnt interested in anything to do with american history until i read this) there is also some ramantic aspects to it. It'll keep you glued to the pages. Hope you ejoy it as much as i did.

5 out of 5 stars Annie, Between the States Review.......2006-07-29

I absolutely adored this book, and found that it so effectively and smoothly linked fiction with nonfiction that you almost believe that you are reading a historical nonfiction archive. I have a friend who, at that time, was reading A History of The Civil War, and he thought that Annie, Between the States was a nonfiction book. But if it was, it would not be so pleasurable. Nonfiction books cannot convey an individual's opinions and feelings. Annie, Between the States conveys the author's opinions as she feels that a person in Annie's position would feel. I expected more blood and battling and gore in the book, however the absence of an abundance of such, as one usually finds in such a fictional war book, did not upset me in the slightest. The romance just adds to the enjoyability and versatility of the book. I really felt as though I related to Annie, even though her character was supposed to be about 150 years ago. I must admit, however much I would recommend the book to nonfiction and fiction lovers alike, that the quote from the book, "their own voice," appeared to me as though it was just thrown in there. It was a great metaphor, if that's what L.M.Elliott was going for. Perhaps if had been older than eleven, i would see the significance of that quote to the novel, but as is, I cannot find it. I recommend the book to lovers of all reading genres, old people, young people, romantics, or someone who just wants to go into another world, this is a wonderful book.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2005-12-04

Take my word for it!! This book was a really good book about what life was like during the Civil War. Annie is on the southern side so it does favour southerners but it also shows how much the war impacted the world. It is kind of long.... but this book was worth it. You won't regret reading this book!!!

          Book Description

Active neuroscientists survey NSCs as potential tools for central nervous system and spinal cord repair by explaining their clinically significant fundamental properties, manipulations, and potential therapeutic paradigms. Their discussion of the fundamental biology of NSCs illustrates the signaling pathways that regulate stem cell division and differentiation, and defines the methods of NSC expansion and propagation, neuromorphogenesis, the factors determining cell fate both in vitro and in situ, and the induction of self-reparative processes within the brain. They also present strategies that may lead to fruitful clinical applications in the near future. These range from the replacement of degenerated, dysfunctional, or maldeveloped cells to the provision of factors that may protect, correct, recruit, promote self-repair, or mediate the connectivity of host cells.

I've been listening to audio books to practice my Spanish for a while now, and I've always found Fonolibro's CDs to have great voice acting and narration. My only complaint with this one is that it was rather short (only 2 CDs, from a 250 page book), and a lot of good episodes from the book were cut. Still, if you want a simple way to practice your Spanish and listen to a classic story in the process, this is a great place to start.

It's 8 years now since I first read the book. Since then i've reread it once more. What can i say about the book? it's enthralling, daring, imaginative in its vocabulary and many things more. I'm keen of adventure books but when you add exotic landscapes to accurate data you make a masterpiece. You may think the book does not deserve its 5 stars but just read the story and tell me 'du ecrivain français'.Bye

The first time I met Monsieur DuQuette, at a booksellers' convention in Los Angeles, he read my fortune with tarot cards. I was about to move, he predicted. Irritated, I huffed "that was ridiculous," I'd just moved into my boyfriend's house. When I arrived home from the convention, my aforementioned boyfriend told me he'd had a change of heart and would I please move out as soon as possible! The next time I sat down with DuQuette, at the same conference (several years later in Chicago), he regaled me with witticisms and stories. I was struck by his sincerity, self-revelation, and personable nature. This is the first time a true magician has written an autobiography since The Confessions of Aleister Crowley, and it's the next best thing to being able to sit with the charming and adept DuQuette. It's intimate, straightforward, and neither self-deprecating or egotistical. It contains excruciatingly honest revelations by a contemporary individual attempting to understand the universe and how it works. Here's a man who comfortably accepts himself and urges the reader to do the same. If you are not interested in magick, think of this as a fascinating autobiography. If you are, it's required reading. --P. Randall Cohan

4 out of 5 stars A lazy Sunday on the couch book.......2007-04-19

A good read for a lazy Sunday or a long train/airplane ride. A nice light writing style carries the reader through without being tedious or ponderous. It is a 'give-me-glimpse' book for the curious of and beginners to magik. 4 stars for the entertainment value.

3 out of 5 stars Hilarious but shallow.......2007-01-21

I have read this book mostly to learn about Lon DuQuette's experiences with the angelic (Enochian) magick. What I found only confirmed my opinion that modern "magickians" are to the old-days magi like third-graders doing science experiments to the professional scientists using a university laboratory. It is not just that DuQuette apparently believes in the efficacy of the Golden Dawn and Crowleyan rituals which bring results roughly at a par with those of school science experiments. He also displays an uninformed and rather crude contempt for Christianity, not only in its American fundamentalist form which would be somewhat understandable, but in general. No wonder than that instead of Dee's angelic visitors he conjures up simian creatures throwing mud in their crotches.

On the other hand, DuQuette is an outstanding comedian and I truly congratulate him on his excellent and often self-deprecating sense of humor. "My life with the spirits" is a hilarious read and that's what the three stars are for.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the direct magical experiences by a practitioner of the art........2006-11-30

Lon DuQuette tells his life story in an entertaining and insightful way that leaves the reader with a clear idea of how a magical life may be lived. The author describes various magical experiences, something rare in the literature. Some of his experiments have instructions that are far easier and more practical to follow than many ancient grimoires. Any earnest student of magick can learn valuable lessons from Lon's story.

3 out of 5 stars A Man of Great Insight.......2006-08-25

I bought this book based on a review of a dear friend. I was not disappointed. DuQuette's wit is undeniable! He shares his life from the beginning of his pathworking and takes the reader on a journey through his life, his mistakes, his drawbacks, and his breakthroughs.

I highly recommend this book to the novice in mystacism, as well as those who are well on their paths. There are times when he makes you laugh, and times when you cry with him. A great read!

MacPherson has rated this book as being one of the better summary histories of the Civil War. I have to agree. I learned a lot reading this short history of the Civil War. These two British authors describe well what in essence was the dividing point between the North and South and the nature of the battles.
The book is also loaded with great pictures and illustrations of this era. All in all, a nice summary of this war which cost the American nation 600,000 people.

There have been many books written about this conflict, and I have read a number of them. This is one of the better concise histories of the war.

                                  Book Description

This case study describes the role an applied anthropologist takes to help Marshallese communities understand the impact of radiation exposure on the environment and themselves, and addresses problems stemming from the U.S. nuclear weapons testing program conducted in the Marshall Islands from 1946-1958. The author demonstrates how the U.S. Government limits its responsibilities for dealing with the problems it created in the Marshall Islands. Through archival, life history, and ethnographic research, the author constructs a compelling history of the testing program from a Marshallese perspective. For more than five decades, the Marshallese have experienced the effects of the weapons testing program on their health and their environment. This book amplifies the voice of the Marshallese who share their knowledge about illnesses, premature deaths, and exile from their homelands. The author uses linguistic analysis to show how the Marshallese developed a unique radiation language to discuss problems related to their radiation exposure Â- problems that never existed before the testing program. Drawing on her own experiences working with the Government of the Marshall Islands, the author emphasizes the role of an applied anthropologist in influencing policy, and empowering community leaders to seek meaningful remedies.

What could have been a change-making ethnography is instead an error filled and one sided rant. Barker makes several glaring factual errors that a good editor should have caught, not the readers. She is so clearly biased in favor of the Marshallese (who admittedly were wronged) that she fails to present both sides of the issues and history and she turns readers against her positions in the process. Many important points lose their impact when she lectures us over and over again on what the 'evil' US government ought to give the Marshall Islanders as restitution. Her great knowledge of a unique and interesting people is lost in the political rhetoric. Not a well balanced ethnography.

5 out of 5 stars Marshall Island struggles onward despite Cold War legacy.......2003-09-26

Dr. Barker's fascinating work chronicles the efforts of a tiny nation to overcome environmental devastation at the hands of the United States. The challenges faced by the Marshallese people include environmental contamination from carcinogens such as nuclear waste (from American testing of nuclear weapons) and PCBs (from multinational corporations).

Despite the misery and devastating caused by their supposed protectors (the U.S. government), Dr. Barker accurately describes the boundless determination, decency and generosity, which the Marshallese people share with all.

As Dr. Barker correctly notes, this resiliency will prove essential to the citizens of the Marshall Islands as they continue to face critical challenges such as economic globalization, nuclear and environmental remediation, and global warming. Any of which, could prove catastrophic in the decades to come.

5 out of 5 stars Anthropology in the public interest.......2003-09-18

Dr. Barker has told a story that most Americans never learn, and our government still tries to hide: that the U.S. tested nuclear weapons with full knowledge that the Marshallese people would be affected by the fallout and associated radiation. Using innovative anthropological oral history and linguistics analysis techniques, Dr. Barker demonstrates how the Marshallese have endured the physical, political, and cultural impacts of the U.S. nuclear weapons testing program on Bikini and Enewetok, and developed institutions and cultural adaptations to advance beyond victim status. A must-read for any serious scholar of the Cold War and its human consequences.

                                        Book Description

One of the most powerful nationalist ideas in modern Europe is the assertion that there is a link between people and their landscape. Focusing on the heart of German romanticism, the Rhineland, Thomas Lekan examines nature protection activities from Wilhelmine Germany through the end of the Nazi era to illuminate the relationship between environmental reform and the cultural construction of national identity.

In the late nineteenth century, anxieties about national character infused ecological concerns about industrialization, spurring landscape preservationists to protect the natural environment. In the Rhineland's scenic rivers, forests, and natural landmarks, they saw Germany as a timeless and organic nation rather than a recently patchworked political construct. Landscape preservation also served conservative social ends during a period of rapid modernization, as outdoor pursuits were promoted to redirect class-conscious factory workers and unruly youth from "crass materialism" to the German homeland. Lekan's examination of Nazi environmental policy challenges recent work on the "green" Nazis by showing that the Third Reich systematically subordinated environmental concerns to war mobilization and racial hygiene.

This book is an original contribution not only to studies of national identity in modern Germany but also to the growing field of European environmental history.
