Color is what this book is all about. Beautiful pictures follow well-written text that takes one through the different seasons (as expected) in Canada's oldest Park. A real treat!

          Book Description

Sometimes, when I touch things, words fill my head. Words that feel like thoughts--thoughts that are inside of me...but not mine.

I used to think I was crazy. Used to.

I'm starting to wonder if there's a reason for all the voices that tangle together in my mind. And if I'm right, then it's not my sanity I'm worried about--it's my life.

PerfectBound e-book extras: Gifted Touch Trivia-O-Rama and Q & A with Melinda Metz. Rae has a gift - and a curse: when she touches something, she can sometimes hear the thoughts of others who have handled that object. I?m starting to wonder if there?s a reason for all the voices that tangle together in my mind. And if I?m right, then it?s not my sanity I?m worried about - it?s my life. This is the first book in the hair-raising new series by the author of Roswell High.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept.......2006-06-24

Imagine being able to read the thoughts of others just by touching their fingerprints. Awesome, but freaky right? This series is about a girl named Rae with just that ability. This book documents the day she discovers her ability and how her lie changes afterwards. First of all, everyone back at her school thinks she's a nutcase. SEcond, she's being forced to go to group therapy (where she meets Anthony and Jesse who help her understand her gift). Third... someones out to kill her!

Great storyline, a little slow and frustrating for the reader who understands Rae's ability even though Rae, the narrator, does not. And I must warn you, although the early books in the series hint a relationship between Rae and Anthony, it won't develop until later on in the series... so stick with it. (thats the only reason I rated the book 4 stars)

          Happy Reading!

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-10-28

Rae starts out as a normal teenager and she is living a pretty good life. That is until she starts having thoughts that are not hers. She begins to think that she is going crazy, like her mother did before she died in an insane asylum. Then finally Anthony, a guy she met at one of her support groups, figured out that she had a wonderful and amazing gift. But somebody doesnt like this whole amazing gift idea. They want Rae dead and fast. With her gift she starts to investigate who wants to kill her and why. Rae and Anthony go through sad, happy and angry times. These books are great because at the end of each book they leave you hanging so you cannot put it down, but you have to keep reading each book within a matter of days! I recommend this book to people of all ages. It doesnt even matter what kind of book you like, this one has mystery, suspense, romance, and fanstasy all put together. If I had to choose one book to read over and over again I would definitely choose this one!

          5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY AWSOME!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-29

Rae, a girl on the verge because she thinks she's going crazy starts out trying to ignore all of the weird thoughts that keep coming to her brain, that aren't hers. She thinks she's going insane, but in truth she's getting an amazing gift. With the help of Anthony, a guy she meets in her group meetings that are for stepping out of the thought of being crazy, she finally realizes what's happening to her. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series!!!! It is SSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good that you can't put it down and you simply HAVE to get through it without putting it down! That is something to say for me, because I've read so many good books out there. So PLEASE experience the feeling of going into Rae's mind and getting the feeling that makes you feel like you ARE the characters in the book! This series is a total MUST-READ!!!!!! So, what are you waiting for?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Go read it!!!! PLEASE!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Leaves you coming back for more.......2004-07-29

I own the whole Fingerprints series. It is literally impossible to read one and have no desire to read the others. You just have to. Rae finally resolves one problem, then at the end of the book another pops up. Melinda Metz keeps the reader feeling for Rae, rooting her on. And Anthony is adorable. The chemistry that Metz builds between the two is just right, and satisfies any hopeless romantics out there. The books should also satisfy those searching for mystery, suspense and good old science fiction. It's a great series, and definitely worth the time.

          5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down!.......2004-06-04

The Fingerprints series has got to be one of the best series i've ever read! from the very beginning of book one, Gifted Touch, i can't put them down, even when i've read them so many times i've memorized them! They are the perfect combination of sci-fi, suspense, and romance, yet they still convince you that they could happen. melinda metz did a spectacular job writing these books! i reccomend them to anybody who loves a good cant-put-it-down read.

                Book Description

This volume emphasizes the involvement of all facets of biology in the analysis of environmentally controlled movement responses. This includes biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology and as an integral part of any approach to a closer understanding, physiology. The initial euphoria about molecular biology as the final solution for any problem has dwindled and the field agrees now that only the combined efforts of all facets of biology will at some day answer the question posed more than hundred years ago: "How can plants see?". One conclusion can be drawn from the current knowledge as summarized in this volume. The answer will most likely not be the same for all systems.

                  Book Description

This unified approach to charge transfer science provides a valuable tool for the increasing number of theoretical and experimental scientists involved in such areas as physical chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical physics, biophysics, biochemistry, and solid-state and surface physics.
This comprehensive monograph presents the process of charge transfer in the traditionally independent fields of physics, chemistry and biology from a unified point of view. The numerous facets of charge transfer are presented coherently, emphasising the common nature of phenomena which at first sight appear quite different. Detailed theoretical overviews are presented and phenomena such as redox, electrochemical and radiative processes, polarons, proton transfer and biological processes are discussed. All major results of the different processes in physics, chemistry and biology are discussed in detail with special reference to their physical mechanisms, thereby allowing a unified conceptual approach to be applied

Electron transfer, a fundamental chemical process underlying all redox reactions, has been explained in detail, experimentally and theoretically.i have to say that it is an excellent book concerning quantum electrochemistry and quantum biology based on fundamental physics. After i have reviewed this book i wish i could be a electron, as a graduate student majoring electrochemistry.

And i wish i had cherished one, too.

                            Book Description

"We hope that this small volume will suggest directions of synergy and contact for future researchers to build upon, creating connections and making discoveries that will help explain some of the many mysteries of computation."

                            ---from the Preface

Finite model theory can be succinctly described as the study of logics on finite structures. It is an area of research existing between mathematical logic and computer science. This area has been developing through continuous interaction with computational complexity, database theory, and combinatorics.

The volume presents articles by leading researchers who delivered talks at the "Workshop on Finite Models and Descriptive Complexity" at Princeton in January 1996 during a DIMACS-sponsored Special Year on Logic and Algorithms. Each article is self-contained and provides a valuable introduction to the featured research areas connected with finite model theory.

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection of readable articles.......2000-09-06

This book consists of seven articles on current research in Descriptive Complexity and Finite Models. To someone not in the field they can be viewed as pointers to the literature. As such the succeed quite well. Ronald Fagin's article on E-F games inspired me to read articles on the topic. Bruno Courcelle's article on Graph properties, and the two articles on temporal logic introduced me to these fields and were quite readable. The rest were good too. Overall a good way to learn about this field.

                              Book Description

African American writers have created a rich literature that reflects their experiences and achievements. In many instances, whites figure prominently in these works, frequently portrayed as oppressors. Through a careful examination of works by black writers, Davis constructs a typology of white images in the African American imagination. The book argues that these images repeatedly occur in works by black writers. Some of these stereotypes include the overt bigot, the hypocrite, the liberal, and the good-hearted weakling. While black writers are often explicit in representing the racism of the overt bigot, Davis notes that African American literary works are much more complex in their exposition of the hidden forms of bigotry manifested by covert white racists. The volume suggests that black authors believe that racism is not merely a form of thought or behavior, but a manifestation of identity. While Davis gives detailed attention to the works of Charles Chesnutt, James Baldwin, and Richard Wright, she also looks at several other black writers and examines discussions of whites in contemporary critiques of race by such authors as Derrick Bell and Ellis Cose.

                              4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting........2006-08-08

What a lucky man, to have lived and shared the time he did, with those incredible people. Mr. Newton tells it like he lived it, you get the distinct impression, from reading this book, that Mr. Newton saw these men as both great leaders and great men. It is impressive today to be able to get a cross section of turn of the century greatness, all rolled up in one place. Interestingly enough, Mr. Newton has a strong sense of faith that worked it's way into all of these relationships, yet he incorporates it into the text with minimal overtones. I would recommend this book to anyone, like me, that only has a passing knowledge of these people and their times, it helped to color these people in as human.

                              4 out of 5 stars Fascinating & stimulating.......2003-07-16

This book gives insight in many discussions on business, theology and philosophy among five extraordinary people. But I find it regrettable that the belief of Edison, Ford & Lindbergh in reincarnation is rather superficially worked out. Perhaps because of the religious stance of his wife and the author.
I deem it also regrettable that no mention is made of the membership of Edison of the Theosophical Society while it is obvious he was much inspired by the books of Blavatsky.
Apart from a few inaccuracies (on p. 10: Edison is attributed to have received as a gift every new car that ran from the Ford assembly line, among which the first V8. But the V8 was introduced after the demise of this great inventor, p. 100) I find this book very readable and stimulating.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book on the Lives of Five Great Men.......2001-08-20

This book originally caught my eye as an addition to another book I read called Edison: A Life of Invention by Paul Israel. I wanted a book that would cover a little more of Edison's personal life, and this book did just that. However, James Newton's close, dedicated friendships with all of these great men of the twentieth century is truly amazing, and I learned more than I would probably learn otherwise about some of these important historical figures.

The entire book is fascinating, and surely different parts will appeal to different readers. I was particularly enchanted with a poignant description of how Charles Lindbergh handled dying as he lay on his deathbed. I was also fascinated with how environmentally conscientious some of these men were, particularly Edison and Lindbergh, but also Ford. For example, Ford was very interested in making automobile parts out of soybeans in order to reduce the need for metal parts. It seems that all of these men had numerous ideas and ideas for inventions that were way ahead of their time - perhaps some of them still are.

Newton's writing is quite good, and I only have one very minor criticism: it seems that he preaches a little bit and dwells on the religious facet of his relationships with these people. Of course, I'm sure this was a very important part of his relationship with these men and their families, but it seems that there is a grand, overarching agenda he has in constantly illustrating their connection to God and religion.

If you are interested in any of these historical figures and their fascinating relationships with each other, this book is definitely the best book you will find on the subject.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It takes you on a tour of the lives of some incredible men whose work and personalities still have influence on us years after their deaths. Prior to reading this book, I had no idea that all of these men not only knew each other, but had such strong personal connections. I have recommended this book to many friends and will recommend it strongly to anyone who wants a book to enjoy that also provides such a wonderful and personal look at history through the minds of arguably some of the wisest men of the 20th century.

                                  Book Description

Recasting labor studies in a long-term and global framework, the book draws on a major new database on world labor unrest to show how local labor movements have been related to world-scale political, economic, and social processes since the late nineteenth century. Through an in-depth empirical analysis of select global industries, the book demonstrates how the main locations of labor unrest have shifted from country to country together with shifts in the geographical location of production. It shows how the main sites of labor unrest have shifted over time together with the rise or decline of new leading sectors of capitalist development and demonstrates that labor movements have been deeply embedded (as both cause and effect) in world political dynamics. Over the history of the modern labor movement, the book isolates what is truly novel about the contemporary global crisis of labor movements. Arguing against the view that this is a terminal crisis, the book concludes by exploring the likely forms that emergent labor movements will take in the twenty-first century.

3 out of 5 stars Good coverage for labor unrest.......2006-07-11

The history events on labor movements for the past 130 years were put together in this book. However, the book has very few tables and figures, making it very dry to read.

It will be better to cover just a narrow range, say year 1956 to 2006, for more graphical illustrations.

It is a useful reference book for researchers.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Contemporary Labor Studies.......2004-11-27

As a labor educator for 22 years, director of a labor education center, and adjunct professor of labor studies, this is simply the best book on labor studies I have ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in figuring out what is happening to the world labor movement today. I can't say enough or recommend it enough.

                                          Book Description

The Spiritualist movement had its beginnings in the United States in the late 1840s and within a few years had spread to Australia. With its séances, mediums, trances, `magnetizers', table-tilting and other mysterious psychic phenomena, it attracted media frenzy and public furor, but also many deeply serious converts-often highly intelligent and talented people who rejected orthodox religion in favor of scientific rationalism, but were still vitally concerned with moral debates. One of them was the young Alfred Deakin, later to become Prime Minister. In this fascinating history, Gabay explores the origins of the Spiritualist movement and relates its rise and fall to the wider intellectual and religious currents in colonial Australian society.
