Book Description
This book, first released in 1995 after the author led the international mission to Kuwait to assess damages from Operation Desert Storm, is even more timely today as we face the possibility of further warfare and destruction. James George presents the convincing argument that our planet is suffering from twin crises, ecological and spiritual, with a common source in our deep separation from nature and from each other. Inspired by the teachings of Gurdijeff, Thomas Merton, Tibetan Buddhism, and other contemplative traditions, the author shows that to avoid disaster we must wed scientific truth to an awakening of consciousness and acceptance of responsibility.
Preface by His Holiness the Dalai Lama; foreword by the Secretary General of the United Nations conference on Environment and Development (the "Earth Summit") in Rio de Janeiro, 1992.

Just so wonderfully fundamental about important things, when all others seem to be superficial - Al Gore is getting there!

Based In Fact And Experience.......2006-09-09
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. George in a closed setting with several colleagues. He obviously possessed an inner rectitude and calm that is absent in many of our frenzied lives. Please disregard the callous and stupid comments of R. Sequin aka "drrhs108 with respect to Mr. George's character and to the quality of the writing. The work is factual and the characters are all real participants in the events portrayed. The writing style reflects the character of the author and is calm, steady and objective. These are essential traits for an ambassador to play successfully on the world stage for so many years. The work is sensitive, stays on topic and makes a really good read.
Asking for the Earth: Waking up to the Spiritual/Ecological crisis.......2005-12-14
This book is incisive, understandable, and ultimately moving. Ambassador James George is uniqely qualified to deal with the problem of the divorce of science from spirituality. He was a personal friend of Thomas Merton, J. Krishnamurti, and continues to have a close relationship with the Dalai Lama. The message of Asking for the Earth is one of hope, despite the self-destructive tendencies that humanity has demonstrated until now. Brilliant work.
Most disappointing........2004-12-09
We have read/studied Mr. George's book. Having, also,
read the transcripts of his two or three(?) meetings
with the renowned, Vaishnava scholar, author, teacher,
preceptor, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada;
therefore could read his influence throughout.
What has annoyed us to no end is to witness the lack,
on Mr. George's part, of intellectual integrity/honesty
in his choosing to quote various popular/mundane
personalities and avoiding to cite the controversial/
uncommon. Not giving credit, where just credit is due;
thus making, said, tainted with ego.
Therefore, the work is viewed by us, as a simple attempt
at name and fame; and will be relegated, to the dustbin of
history, as just another work of mental speculation, penned
by yet another, fallible, personality.

Book Description
A group of high school teenagers have to attend a 3-5 p.m. program to make up credits, or to correct inappropriate behavior before they can graduate. And a very compassionate mentor encourages them to correct their failings as they vent their anger against teachers in their journals. Biggest strength of this novel is that low or high level readers can pick up this book and find at least one character who they know, or who they actually are.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Misfits Unite.......2006-07-26
What happens when a group of students with nothing in common find themselves in the same after-school program? In SENIORITIS, author Tate Thompson explores this very question through a group of zany characters, all of whom are not quite as they seem. Mr. T. is by far the most popular teacher in the high school in which he teaches, and he uses this popularity to make meaningful connections with his students. He runs a special 3 to 5 p.m. program for students who have been involved in a variety of school infractions. The story of these unique students and the program is told through a series of journal entries written by the students themselves.
The book has too many characters to list in entirety, but include jocks, nerds, thespians, bullies, wimps, and even drug abusers. Each of the students develop preconceived notions about the other students in the program, only to learn later that they misjudged their peers. Mr. T. requires all of the students in the class to keep a journal, and it is through journaling that they learn more about themselves and each other. The group forms a meaningful bond and name themselves "Senioritis." This bond becomes important when they decide to use their class project as a way to make a difference in the school and the community while sending a strong message to the school administration. Despite the odds, this group of unlikely friends come together and make a lasting impression on the school they will soon leave behind.
Though the story touched on numerous true-to-life situations, the plot was a bit hard to believe at times. The fact that nearly all the teachers in the school, aside from Mr. T., were irresponsible, disinterested in the welfare of students, and at times, mean-spirited, was just too extreme to be realistic. In addition, the revenge scheme concocted by the students in the program seemed a bit contrived. In spite of this, the author still manages to draw you into the story and really develop an emotional connection with its characters. I especially enjoyed the fact that the author lets readers know what happened after that infamous senior year in high school by reuniting the students as adults. The other strength of the book is that it reminds us not to judge a book by its cover, and further, to be true to yourself rather than trying to fit into the mold in which others place you. SENIORITIS is not the most realistic story, but it is one that will hold your attention and teach some valuable lessons in the process.

Greatest Book and Greatest Teacher.......2006-03-23
Mr. Thompson, remeber me? Dexter. You gave me a B+ in your class in 2005. Your book has great simularites with the real high school experience. I though of you as the coolest teacher I ever had. It wasn't the lessons you taught that were what made you the best but how you interacted with the students. Some other teachers treat us like we aren't real people, just peices of clay they think they can mold into what ever they what. Senioritis demonstrated what you taught. In your class there were no "cliques", or social groups, just one big student. Your book reflected every student in JCHS. Your characters were realistic, unlike most books I've read were the teens in the story seem to come from some fairy tale. I hope your writing career goes well. Tell everyone in Junction City I said hi.
Interesting but Cliche.......2005-07-03
I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story is told. I liked the use of journal entries intermixed with real time dialogue to move the storyline on. I was pleased that the author chose to complete the story and let us see what happened to the characters ten years down the road. I was impressed with the use of language and word choice as another element of each of the main characters. I think the message of coming together and seeing that there are more important things then just ourselves is one that is extremely relevant to today's youth.
I just found the story to be too cliche at the same time. I echo another's sentiments that, as a teacher, I find Mr. T to be more worried about being a friend and a buddy to his students in the first few chapters. The adults are pictured in a very poor light. This is an us versus them storyline, in that, the students who want to make things better and right have to battle adults and an administration that is holding them back. I won't even touch on all the cliche and predictable racial messages found throughout. I enjoyed the story, I just found it lacking in some areas.
Easy reading for high-schoolers.......2004-09-03
As a young adult looking for an edgy book to read, a friend of mine directed me to this book. The first thing that came to my mind was, "Why do I want to read about a group of misfit seniors and their problems." But as I got more into it I found that it was more than just a group of kids taliking about their problems, and more of a coming of age story about young kids trying to find their way in to reality.
Read my Review.......2004-07-15
"Senioritis" is the type of book that anyone can relate to; the main characters differ so much that I know there is one you can relate to. Anyone in high school can tell you that this is the type of thing that really goes on and the teenagers in the book give believeable responses to the conflicts that arise. Tate Thompson is a keen observer of this generation and offers his expertise on how to survive until graduation and afterward. We look forward to any new publishings he may produce.

Book Description
The unexpected results from an investigation into hereditary congenital anorectal malformations of pig embryos have demonstrated the weakness of earlier interpretations and constructions and underlined the need for a new inquiry into the normal development of the area in human embryos. It demonstrated that although data from malformations may offer extra information about the normal development of the area, great care has to be taken in using that information for the reconstruction of its normal development which should be firmly based on the observation of the evolving microscopic anatomy of the region in the first place.

Book Description
This book offers an environmental-economic analysis of exploited ecosystems with a clear policy orientation. The study tries to move beyond traditional economic fishery analysis in two respects. First, several theoretical and numerical models are offered that combine economic and ecological descriptions of fisheries. These models give special attention to spatial processes as well as to combining exploitation and conservation objectives. Second, valuation and stakeholder concerns are addressed in empirical analyses employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The latter is done by using advanced methods of monetary valuation. In addition, the first part of the book presents short, introductory overviews of integrated assessment, economic modeling of fishery management, and incorporating uncertainty in fisheries analysis. These introductions will allow readers of a variety of disciplines to create a sufficient background so as to be able to read later parts of the book. This first part also includes a chapter in which traditional and recent ideas on fisheries policy are critically discussed and where possible synthesized. Many of the applied studies reported relate to a multifunctional marine ecosystem area in the Netherlands, known as the Wadden Sea ("Waddenzee"), which extends to Germany and Denmark. The resulting approaches, models and policy insights are nevertheless sufficiently general and innovative to be of interest to a broad audience.

Book Description
This book presents leading-edge research in environmental-economic modelling currently being undertaken in Scandinavia. There is a strong economic modelling tradition in Scandinavia and Scandinavian countries are well known for their interest in environmental questions. This combination has produced fruitful results. Special attention is given to modelling in the agricultural, transport and energy sectors. Interaction between the economy and the environment are examined at both national and regional levels.

Description:
This paper uses a multi-period economic-environmental Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling framework to analyse local sustainability policy issues. Our focus is the small, open, labour-constrained regional economy of Jersey. The case of Jersey is of particular interest for two main reasons. The first is the unusually low degree of geographical labour market integration for such a small regional economy. This motivates our treatment of labour as a region-specific factor of production. The second is the availability of high quality, Jersey-specific economic-enviromental data. We employ CGE model simulations to track the impact of changes in population on a number of energy-consumption and pollution indicators in a recursive dynamic framework under alternative hypotheses regarding economic conditions over the time period under consideration. In the case of Jersey, we find that household consumption is the key factor governing the environmental impact of economic disturbances. Therefore the analysis includes an examination of the sensitivity of the simulation results to different assumptions affecting the wage elasticities of labour demand and supply, and the speed of adjustment to equilibrium on the responsiveness of household income to shifts in labour supply.

Description:
This paper analyzes the systematic relationship between the stock market valuations, the nominal GDPs and the interest rates of six Asian countries, using not ''single equation regression'', but an alternative methodology based on complete, multidirectional, least squares projections in the tradition of Frisch (1934). We compare the results with the spectral analysis of the information matrices and determine the noise levels. The objective is to extract the multidimensional economic system structures from the noisy empirical observations. This complete methodology sharply contrasts with the incomplete methodology of Fama [Fama, E.F., 1990. Stock returns, expected returns, and real activity. Journal of Finance 45, 1089-1108] and Schwert [Schwert, G.W., 1990. Stock returns and real activity: A century of evidence. Journal of Finance 45, 1237-1257], etc., who presume planal relations, fit them to the multidimensional data by only one prejudiced unidirectional projection, thereby ignoring between 75% and 92% of the available covariance information and not publishing all possible model projections. The results in this paper show that the analyzed countries are better analyzed using such complete multidirectional LS projections, even though the analysis is combinatorially much more complex. All six Asian financial-economic systems are high data noise environments, in which it is very difficult to separate the systematic signals from the noise. Because of these high noise levels, spectral analysis is very unreliable. We identify Taiwan's stock market, economy and financial market to be rationally coherent. In contrast, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia show only partially coherent systems, while no coherent system can be identified among Japan's data.

Sister of Virginia Woolf, wife of critic Clive Bell, lover of painter Duncan Grant, and an accomplished artist herself, Vanessa Bell was a mainstay of the Bloomsbury group. As was only to be expected from this unconventional little group, Vanessa's personal life was a tangle of soap-opera proportions, including an illegitimate daughter fathered by Grant but raised as her husband's and a succession of Grant's male lovers among other eccentricities. Yet she was also an oddly conventional woman in many respects, maintaining her married name long after she'd deserted her husband to live with her lover, and devoting herself to her children in a shockingly (for Bloomsbury) maternal way. Though paint on canvas was her primary modality of expression, Vanessa Bell was also a talented writer, as evidenced in the Selected Letters of Vanessa Bell.
In her introduction to the collection, editor Regina Marler writes:
To her children, her sister, her lovers, Vanessa wrote almost daily. On the whole, her reserve and shyness argued against written declarations of affection; she preferred to entertain, keeping up a teasing, ironic tone. She excelled in narratives of domestic chaos and embarrassment. She was forever spilling her inkpot down the front of her skirt, then describing the mess.
The letters selected here reflect all this and more. Writing to her friend Margery Snowden while touring Italy, she describes an elderly woman "muttering imprecations and growling at her unfortunate daughter.... Shall I shock you if I tell you of her form of oath, when her unfortunate daughter happens to offend her? 'G-d d-amn you,' she shrieks at her." Vanessa then adds, charmingly, "I think dashes may make it less shocking..." Art, literature, domestic details, and personal relationships are among the subjects Vanessa Bell touches on, and taken together, this collection provides both a self-portrait of the artist and an intimate glimpse of the remarkable circle in which she moved. --Margaret Prior
