Book Description
Atlantic Shorelines is an introduction to the natural history and ecology of shoreline communities on the East Coast of North America. Writing for a broad audience, Mark Bertness examines how distinctive communities of plants and animals are generated on rocky shores and in salt marshes, mangroves, and soft sediment beaches on Atlantic shorelines.
The book provides a comprehensive background for understanding the basic principles of intertidal ecology and the unique conditions faced by intertidal organisms. It describes the history of the Atlantic Coast, tides, and near-shore oceanographic processes that influence shoreline organisms; explains primary production in shoreline systems, intertidal food webs, and the way intertidal organisms survive; sets out the unusual reproductive challenges of living in an intertidal habitat, and the role of recruitment in shaping intertidal communities; and outlines how biological processes like competition, predation, facilitation, and ecosystem engineering generate the spatial structure of intertidal communities.
The last part of the book focuses on the ecology of the three main shoreline habitats--rocky shores, soft sediment beaches, and shorelines vegetated with salt marsh plants and mangroves--and discusses in detail conservation issues associated with each of them.

Book Description
The Ecology of Atlantic Shorelines is an introduction to the plant and animal communities on the Atlantic shores of North America. Written as a field guide to the physical and biological processes that generate patterns on Western Atlantic shorelines, it is intended for a wide audience ranging from undergraduate students and amateur naturalists to professionals in other disciplines.
The first four chapters are an introduction to various processes that shape assemblages of organisms on shorelines. The opening chapter examines the history of the Atlantic coast, tides, introduced species, and the role of water movement in shaping shoreline communities. "The Economy of the Shoreline" then discusses the production and consumption of resources in shoreline assemblages. The unusual reproductive problems faced by shoreline organisms and the important role played by recruitment in shaping these communities are explored in the third chapter. A final introductory chapter describes the biological processes that affect shoreline organisms once they have settled on the shore.
The final three chapters discuss the ecology of three habitat types that dominate the Atlantic coast-rocky shores, soft sediment beaches, and salt marshes. These chapters will prepare students and naturalists for visits to these habitats. Each chapter ends with a brief summary and list of suggested readings.
The Ecology of Atlantic Shorelines has over 300 illustrations (including an eight-page, full-color insert), draws from over 700 references, and highlights key terms. It can serve as a text for courses in marine ecology, marine biology, shoreline or coastal ecology, and field ecology, as well as a supplemental text for invertebrate zoology and ecology course field trips

Praise for Stackpole's John Eastman bird guides
"This is one of the most invaluable bird guides to be published in quite some time."- Booklist
"Eastman's nature biography, along with Hansen's beautifully rendered illustrations, bring the lives of birds and their habitats closer to the human eye and heart."-ForeWord
"Presented in a readable, easy to follow narrative . . . a well-researched look at the birds and their lives."-Eirik Blom, Bird Watcher's Digest
Birds of Field and Shore describes how 42 common grassland and shoreline birds nest, mate, and rear their broods in spring; how they feed in summer; whether, how, and where they migrate in fall; and how they survive in winter. This seasonal approach, together with an emphasis on ecological niches, distinguishes Eastman's books from other field guides. Precise illustration complements informative text, making Birds of Field and Shore an appealing and educational guide for birders of any skill level.
Entries are arranged in taxonomic order based on DNA testing. Selected bibliography and index are included.

Customer Reviews:
Great alternative to typical guidebook.......2006-07-23
I traveled regularly to the UK for a few months and this book provided us with plans for our 15 most memorable weekends. Most walks take you to locations that you probably wouldn't encounter if you stuck to a typical guidebook. We particularly liked the walks in the western and southern part of the country. We used recommendations for B&Bs in Wales and the Southwest. One of the paths for the walk was overgrown and we got lost for 30 minutes or so...no big deal.
You won't need hiking shoes/gear for these walks, but bring a backpack with water and a snack and if you are traveling in the springtime, paths can get a little muddy and you will almost certainly need a change of shoes (and possibly a change of pants).
Even if you are only going to be in the UK for a couple of weeks, I would recommend mixing 2 or 3 of these walks into your trip.
A book that delivers exactly what it claims........2005-02-02
I'm not big on walking, and this book only has four hikes for Scotland, so why would I bother buying it when I took a trip to Scotland about ten years ago? Because leafing through it, the hike to Dunnottar Castle (and the castle itself) sounded so intriguing, and so cool, that I decided I had to go. My "regular" travel guide just mentioned the castle in part of one paragraph, but that hike was the highlight of my entire trip. I ended up doing 3 of the 4 Scottish walks instead of just the one. Many of the expeditions are really easy: you don't need hiking boots, stamina, or experience, and they take you to specific interesting destinations. It's fun to read even if you don't actually go on the walks, but you'll sure want to once you've read the book.
"Discover Special Places Tourists Never See".......2005-02-01
This valuable little book really aided our trip and gave us lots of ideas for planning other trips as well.
Very readable and thankfully for all budgets!
Highly recommended! (Especially good on the plane, bus or train, too!)

Book Description
Call it six degrees of separation. The kids in 8th Grade Writer’s Workshop are awestruck when their teacher announces that through her husband’s cousin, she’s met rock superstar Nick Thompson and has invited him to their class. He’s come to talk about writing and he’s even cooler than they imagined. Nick, known for his music as well as his lyrics, tells the kids his secret: A song is just a bowl of fruit–one must figure out how to paint it. Words are to a writer what paint is to a painter. How many ways can one arrange the fruit? An infinite number. There’s style, voice, genre, and much more to consider. Nick gives the kids two weeks to complete the assignment using seven seemingly ordinary elements. Each student must tell an interesting story, reflecting his or her style. And so The Fruit Bowl Project begins. Rap, poetry, monologue, screenplay, haiku, fairy tale–and more.

Reading, Writing, and Rock 'n' Roll.......2006-11-06
What happens when a teacher and a famous rock star give a class of middle schoolers a writing prompt - but assign each student a different writing style? This hilarious and self-aware story has two portions: the initial setup, which is written in prose, and then the variations on the project, which are written in every way imaginable. There's a screenplay. A limerick. A newspaper article. A transcript. The point of view of an insider, an outsider, a popular girl, a gossip hound. Different styles, different kids.
This book completely lives up to its premise. I encourage teachers and students to read and discuss this book in their classroom, then create their own Fruit Bowl Project.
My dream school!!!.......2006-06-14
This is such a cool book, I love writing and it shows you how you can write a million ways. Besides loving the book I loved the school in it so much!! One of the reviewer was wrong, it's not a private school it's a public school. The kids have so much freedom to be creative and they're really different BUT they all respect each other even more at the end because of what they write. Even the things that were bad were good because they were bad to be funny. I loved Nick Thompson the rock star. He seemed real, like if Mick Jagger came to your class :). This book is for kids who like to write AND for kids who don't! You will definitely want to do your own fruit bowl project.
Using Your Imagination.......2006-05-14
This was a wonderful book. I started reading it one morning, and by the next morning it was completely finished. I love to write, but I never thought of how many different, unique ways there are to write, until reading The Fruit Bowl Project. This story opens up your imagination in so many different ways. When a famous singer comes to and eighth grade writer's workshop classroom and tells the kids his secret, school became much more exciting. The kids were given two weeks to complete an assignment using seven ordinary, everyday events. The twist, it had to be written in their own style, displaying their personality, in any way imaginable. I really enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good laugh.
Middle grades will relish The Fruit Bowl Project.......2006-05-09
Middle grades will relish The Fruit Bowl Project, which focuses on different ways to tell the same story when students at a hip Manhattan school in a writer's workshop receive a special surprise. A song, Nick explains, is just a bowl of fruit - one must have to figure out how to paint it, and it's up to the students to take their literary bowl and run with it. A fascinating, modern story evolves.
Wonderful book for your 7th grader.......2006-03-16
I enjoyed "The Fruit Bowl Project" enormously. I found the concept interesting, unique and insightful. The stories were incredibly well written. Ms Durkee really captured the voice of the 8th grader in it in a way that was surprising and delightful.
I love the premise of this book and I think the idea of story being secondary to style an interesting and not often addressed area of literature for children.
So many adult books offer form and style over story and are feted for it, "The God of Small Things" the Booker Prize winner by Arandati Roy "The Bone People" by Kerri Hulme (another Booker Prize winner) to name just two.
It is exciting to contemplate what children might do if they give some thought to style and this book compels them to do just that.
As a 7th grade English teacher I would encourage any parent interested in inspiring their child to write or any teacher looking to do the same to get this book on your reading list!

Customer Reviews:
An exceptional, fun book about writing.......2007-08-14
As a public middle school teacher, I was lucky enough to have come across this gem of a book while preparing to teach a new writing class. I found it to be a delightfully written, brilliantly fun examination of the concepts of genre and style, cleverly disguised as an entertaining story about a rock star's visit to high school and his assertion that writing is "like a bowl of fruit" that can be painted an infinite number of ways. Inspired by this, the students set out to tell a single, absurdly simple story in as many ways as they can--to wonderfully amusing results.
The Fruit Bowl Project turned out to be the perfect spark to my class. Every single student, down to the most stubbornly reluctant writer, loved reading it--indeed, they devoured it. Inspired by Durkee's book, we set out to produce our own "Fruit Bowl Project," which we did, with fantastic results. I have before never had the absolute pleasure to guide a class that was so enthusiastic, inspired, and joyful about writing as this one was as a result of sharing this book--and along the way we learned a lot about style and genre too.
I would recommend The Fruit Bowl Project without reservation to ANY teacher, though especially to teachers of literature and writing. But I would also recommend it to any middle-school-through-high-school aged student who's looking for an entertaining, slyly humorous, and wonderfully-written book to read for the sheer fun of it.
How many ways can you tell the same story?.......2007-08-12
One day, Ms. Vallis, the literature teacher at West Side Middle School, waltzes into the eighth grade writers' workshop and announces that her cousin's husband is none other than rock star Nick Thompson. Not only that, Nick is coming to their class to talk about writing. The kids are, of course, thrilled when Nick comes, and they hang onto his every word. Nick tells them that a work of literature is like a bowl of fruit: a million artists can paint the same bowl of fruit and none of the pictures will come out the same.
Nick gives the kids two weeks to complete a seemingly simple assignment: They must write a story about a boy who drops a pencil during a reading test and then bumps a girl's arm as he picks it up, causing her to make a mark on her test. After the test, the same boy tells his friend a joke over lunch, which makes his friend laugh so hard that chocolate milk shoots out of his nose, all over both the boys' chicken nuggets.
Of course, each of the kids writes a completely different story. Kids turn in raps, haiku, monologues, screenplays, fairy tales, newspaper articles, sonnets, horror stories, and even a Broadway musical. The story is told from the point of view of the first boy, the second boy, the girl, the teacher, and a chicken nugget. One student tells the story entirely in math, while another makes a crossword puzzle. All in all, the kids tell the story 50 times (hence the subtitle of the book).
The best part of The Fruit Bowl Project is the kids' stories. You'd think after hearing the same story 50 times, I'd get a bit sick of it, but I never once checked how many pages were left. It also helps that some of the best stories are placed near the end of the book.
The story is supposedly targeted for 9-12 year olds, but teenagers and adults can enjoy it too. However, I think that the book was written to be a classroom aid, rather than a piece of realistic fiction, since there are very few 8th graders who can write as well as the kids in the book.
My only complaint is that I wish the author had fleshed out the kids' characters a bit more. There are 46 pages leading up to the stories and barely any of the kids are introduced in any depth. I know that it's hard to introduce 51 characters in 46 pages, but I think that the story would have benefited either from shortening the beginning part so that none of the kids were introduced or expanding upon it so that more of the kids were introduced.
So, if you want to read something funny, or you're just looking for some inspiration, check this book out!

Giddiness for the Mathematically Fastidious.......2000-12-12
I picked up _Sliceforms_ in England, and got it home without much ado. However, on a bored Saturday night in October, I constructed my first Sliceform. The "slices" are extremely detailed templates, and cutting has to be exact, but when I completed the 'Form by sliding the cuts onto one another, I was amazed and perplexed. This three-dimensional shape can be folded onto itself in a synesthetically pleasing way. I carry my Sliceform with me whenever I sense I might get bored -- or need a handy conversation-starter! _Sliceforms_ is pretty easy to understand and a great joy to experience, especially if one is as detail-oriented as I. The only drawback is the less-than stellar explanations if you're not hugely geometrically inclined.

Great philosophy behind it.......2007-09-28
I half-expected this book to be a children's book but it actually contained philosophical ideals people would often ask themselves in life. Highly recommended
Amazing........2007-08-08
I place this on a par, in it's own way, with Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet.
Deeply meaningful, cloaked in a tale of a child. I read part of it at my mother's funeral. Not that it is a sad story, per se. But there was not a dry eye in the house when I finished.
What it has to say on loving and on loss is absolutely worth more than this book costs and every minute you spend reading it.
Magical journey..........2007-06-13
My first book ever was The little prince. It was my dad's first present on the day I was born. Since then I have read it at least 20 times, and every time I read it it delivers a different message. I think this is a book that will be enjoyed by kids as well as adults. This french version is beautiful, and very similar to the one my dad gave me in spanish. Has the original drawings with nice colors. As someone stated this book can be interpreted in different ways and that's why it's so magical. I consider it one of the best short stories ever. A true masterpice.
Classic in any lanugage.......2007-03-12
I've read this book many times, sometimes in English, sometimes in French. I've read it for pleasure. I've studied it. I've taught it. I love it. The fox's secret is an important lesson for us all and one I appreciate being reminded of. I recommend this book to anyone, it's been translated into over 100 languages. (It's been translated more than any book besides the Bible I've heard.) I love sharing it with people which is why I will teach it as long as I'm teaching and I will read it aloud to my children when I have them.
A story for all ages.......2007-02-01
Although I believe that this book is for everyone young or old, I think that "grown ups" will appreciate it more than kids.
The book has passages that remind the adult of the innocent little kid within.
In a lot of ways, the wisdom in the story comes as somehow a reality check.
In depth the book is about life, relationships (the little prince and the rose), friendships (the little prince and the fox) and human caracteristics...
I have read this story so many times and every time I discover something "new". This book is a work of art!
If you speak French, I recommend the French language edition over the English one.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful for AP French students.......2002-01-14
I'm currently in AP French and our class is reading The Little Prince in French. Le Compagnon Du Petit Prince has been extremely helpful with both comprehension and vocabulary. I regard it highly.
Fine, but...........2001-10-04
This is a good solid book, but it would benefit from a more imaginative approach. It is very cut and dried, the sort of approach kids would expect from "les grandes personnes". More room for thought and imagination is needed.
Also, the text would be vastly easier to use if there were a companion teacher's edition/guide. Still, if you want kids to pull Le Petit Prince apart leaf by leaf, this book will do it very thoroughly. It is good for teaching French, but not for inculcating a love for French (or any other) literature.
Complementary lessons for Le Petit Prince.......2001-01-06
This is the perfect source for outlining vocabulary by page and line. Exercises include vocabulary integration, reading comprehesion questions, written expression in French based on story, grammar, and dictation exercises are also included which offer the student exposure to listening comprehension.
The is a wonderful aid for teachers' lesson plans, as it organises class activities based on the chronological order of the story and offers practice of specific functions as the students encounter similiar representations of such in their reading.
