A Flawless Collection of Essays.......2000-06-29
Billy Watson's Croker Sack is candid and clear and Mr. Burroughs himself is an expert in syntax. The tales are honest and human without being sentimental. This is the type of book you listen to carefully, sounding out words, hearing them together. The style is self-effacing in some ways - I reread sentences, surprised the second time by their beauty, but more surprised that I didn't notice them as much the first time, the prose is so natural. And this is, perhaps, the best quality of the collection - that it so naturally evokes eloquence. I recommend this collection to anyone fascinated by words and sentences, but more to those seeking well-told yarns about the things that make us most human.

Worth every peseta!.......2000-04-09
I used this guide to plan a trip for 5 women travelers, including myself. We selected 2 hotels, one in Madrid and the other in Sevilla. All information was accurate and we were more than pleased with our selections. It is a must-read for anyone on a budget and looking for a bargain. What is especially comforting is that the author has personally stayed in all of the places she highlights in the book. I am looking forward to more books by this author, especially England and France.
Excellent guide to low-cost lodging in larger cities.......1999-05-12
This very useful guide lists hotels for 22 cities. Also includes extra appendices: useful websites, maps, books; what to pack; tips on accommodations; tourist offices; tips on phoning, faxing; useful phrases; schedule of holidays, events; and a reservation form. Directions included for each hotel. Would be useful to have a plot of hotel locations within the city for trip planning. Listing of hotels by zip code is not useful. Excellent overall.
Thorough and with a personal touch........1999-03-17
I am the author of Eating & Drinking in Spanish and Eating & Drinking in Italy (the What Kind of Food Am I? series). I own, and have used, all of Margo Classe's guides, including Hello Spain! These guides are thorough and the author adds a personal touch when she describes in detail each hotel she has visited. Hello Spain! is a must for the independent, budget traveler.
informative and current.......1999-03-03
I enjoyed locating hotels that suited my needs. I mailed a copy of the fax (from the back of the book) to several hotels and I started getting responses within 4 days. I am really happy and can't wait to travel to Spain.
A book for the Independent Traveler.......1998-07-28
This is a great little book about mid-prized hotels in Spain. The authur has obviously visited all of in person. She describes locations, individual rooms, decors and even tells the traveler, who speaks English in the various hotels. She has many helpful tips on what to pack, how to get to the hotels, even how to get a discount. This is a book for the independent traveler and belongs in their luggage. It won't take up a lot of space either.

so good! i was obsessed from age 10-15 i read ALL OF THEM. It was a nice little fantasy escape world i will never forget--a lovely childhood series i cherish
Elizabeth and Jessica are in Danger from Margo!.......2004-12-28
Elizabeth and Jessica are still mad at each other because Jessica blames Elizabeth for killing Sam Woodruff[Jessica's Boyfriend] Jess never confessed that She was the one that put the rum in the punch.Elizabeth lives the Jungle Prom over and Over and discover it was Jessica. She did it out of greed.Georgie's brother,Josh comes to Sweet Valley to get revenge on the babysitter who killed his little brother. Both Elizabeth and Margo wear the same dress on New Year's Eve,but Jessica,Steven and Billie saves Elizabeth from Margo at Fowler Crest.
The Evil Twin!.......2004-08-10
There is a girl who tries to take over Elizabeth's life after seeing her picture. She looks like her. I just want to say that this could happen in real life- well, something like it could happen. There are lots of people who have look-alikes they don't evern know about, who aren't related to them. Have you ever seen those celebrity look-alike contests? Some of those people could pass for twins........or triplets, in this case. Anyway, this book ties up the prom mini-series. I read the first book a few months ago (A NIGHT TO REMEMBER) and I was reading it in the dark and in the car, because it was soooo good. I loved it so much that I bought the whole mini-series at the same time so I could read them all. Ok, GO READ THE PROM MINI-SERIES!!!!!!
Pretty good.......2002-09-02
I thought this book was pretty good. The Margo thing was good but jess and liz were to depressed. The end was the best part and i also recomend return of the evil twin.
Great Christmas Read!.......2001-12-21
If you're looking to get a teen or preteen girl to actually sit down and read a book, try this one!
Filled with a murder plot, revenge, love, and, of course, a happy ending for the picture perfect twin stars of the series, it should keep even the most jaded teen girl interested.

The Songs of the Frontier Warriors is the first English-language translation ever made of Albanian epic verse. As the product of a little-known culture and a difficult, rarely studied language, the Albanian epic has tended to remain in the shadow of the Serbo-Croatian, or more properly, Bosnian epic, with which it has undeniable affinities. This translation may thus be regarded as an initial attempt to rectify the imbalance and to give scholars and the reading public in general an opportunity to delve into the exotic world of the northern Albanian tribes. The present bilingual edition offers a broad selection of the best known songs. Also included are an introduction, a glossaries of terms and sources, and a selective bibliography. Special Features -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction 23 Chapters: Glossary of terms, personal names and place names Sources Bibliography Language Notes Text: English (translation)

Book Description
Everett Ruess--a bold teenage adventurer, artist, and writer--tramped around the Sierra Nevada, the California coast, and the desert wilderness of the Southwest between 1930 and 1934. At the age of 20, he mysteriously vanished into the barren Utah desert. Ruess has become an icon for modern-day adventurers and seekers. His search for ultimate beauty and adventure is chronicled in two books that contain remarkable collections of his writings, extracted from his journals and from letters written to family and friends. Both books are reprinted here in their entirety.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Description of Place and Time.......2007-09-23
Unlike most of the other reviewers I found Everett to be rather smug and having an unpleasant sense of entitlement. I also didn't find him to be particularly talented as a writer or artist. It would have been interesting, had he lived, to see if he matured into greater skill, and perhaps even learned to treat animals appropriately.
I did like the book for it's excellent sense of the Canyon Country during that time. There's no question of Everett's bravery of wandering this harsh land. Edward Abbey is the far, far superior writer, but he's writing from a later period. I haven't found much written during this period and as such really enjoyed this book.
A great book detailing the travels and life of Everett Ruess.......2006-11-06
This is a great book, if you want to read about Everett and his travels around the Southwest and the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell area.
Good book..terrible binding........2006-09-28
This book is very interesting, but each page falls out as I turn to the next. I like to keep my books and often reread them again and again. I don't think it will be possible with this edition.
The best book about Everett Ruess.......2005-10-05
This is, I believe the best book about the mysterious young artist Everett Ruess. It consists mainly of his letters to his family and friends--well-written, if slightly flowery letters--and is much better than the less-polished collection of his wilderness journals.
Everett Ruess was a twenty-year-old photographer, artist, and writer, who rambled the desert with a manic passion for nature, beauty, and solitude. He canvassed the American Southwest, including the canyons and slickrock where Lake Powell is today, on burros, on horses, and on foot; he took the trails everyone thought were too dangerous, sought out the most desolate, forbidding areas, and chased experience with a joyful craving--sought it without already having it. He just went.
Where he went last though is anyone's guess. In 1934 he carved "NEMO," and the year, at two different spots in the sandstone around Davis Gulch (in southern Utah, just north of present day Lake Powell), tied up his pack animals--or someone did--and disappeared. No verifiable trace of him has ever been found, and though most theories involve his death, he could still be alive somewhere. He'd be over ninety years old now. Leaving his burros tied up to possibly starve was just the right touch to make people think he'd died--it might be what I'd do if I couldn't take the pressures of society anymore--and there is ample evidence throughout his journals that he never treated animals very well anyway: he killed every snake he saw, beat his dog so hard it ran away, and overworked his mules until one died of exhaustion.
Besides, why would he carve "NEMO" twice--as in Captain Nemo, the character in Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," a book he loved, a character who abandons society to live under the ocean--if he wasn't planning on abandoning society? It seems like an amazing coincidence that he would carve that, and then just get murdered by cattle rustlers.
Claims have been made that his bones were found in a crevice in Davis Gulch in the 1970s and given to a park maintenance worker and then lost. A notoriously racist Indian has claimed he murdered Everett Ruess in present day Reflection Canyon, buried him there, and then tied Everett's donkeys up in Davis Gulch. People have claimed that he got married and moved to a reservation, that he became a polygamist (he always claimed to be a "pantheistic hedonist"), and that he drowned.
A local of Escalante, Utah, told me he met Everett back in 1934: Everett was grinning, beaming, walking between two Navajo men, and the men were singing. That same man told me he thinks Everett was just a dumb kid who got himself killed by being foolish, and that he explored less than people say he did.
That may be, but everything about Everett remains a mystery, and his character remains intriguing.
Everett came out West, and at least part of him stayed here, and his legend grows more and more every day. He came out west, and he's still missing. Like the Anasazi. Like a thousand rumored treasures. Like 180 miles of the Colorado through Glen Canyon.
Things and people just vanish out here.
Fans of this book might also like "Sandstone Sunsets: In Search of Everett Ruess," which contains several interesting theories on Everett's death. Scott Thybony's "Burntwater" contains a good chapter on him, as does Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild."
Don't stare too long at the abyss, lest the abyss stare back at thee.......2005-08-04
It may seem strange to describe something that is autobiographical as folklore or mythology. But to read Ruess' story is to read something so fantastic it is beyond belief. In the end, the story truly becomes myth as Everett meets his as yet unknown end.
I lived in Utah for 5 years and have hiked many of the canyons and deserts of Ruess' journals. Even in a more modern age I am still amazed at his adventurous spirit. The four corners region remains a vast and remote place much of which is inaccessible by 4 wheel-drive (thank goodness). To imagine a teenager venturing into such country at a time when it was still the domain of Native Americans is remarkable.
Reviewers who are critical of Ruess' journals, not only fail to recognize the remarkable nature of his story, but the beauty with which it is told. It is ironic then that Ruess often criticizes his paintings, never perhaps realizing his true talent is writing.
The material in these journals would make excellent material for a movie. I know one was made independently but Robert Redford (without his voice for narration) would truly bring these journals to life. What more cinematic ending than his leaving all earthly possessions behind and disappearing forever (at age 21) into the ether of dust and desert air. I wish someone would make a film of his story so it would finally be recognized as one of the great American stories.
Among journals of the southwest, this book is worthy of 5 stars. Among all literature it is probably worthy of 3.5 to 4.
Readers who enjoy this might also enjoy the already suggested Into the Wild, Desert Solitaire, Sandstone Sunsets, or even Mormon Country by Wallace Stegner.

Book Description
How do you build a catapult?
How do you organize an ambush?
Can you teach yourself how to command an army?
War was a key part of the life and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. It influenced every level of existence, from the men fighting hand to hand to defend their communities, to the significance economic impact of organising a large fighting force. The ancient writers who tell us about technical aspects of military practice and the management of armies can shed much light on the murky area of the conduct of war, and convey the interest that the subject inspired in the ancient world.
Brian Campbell has selected and translated a wide range of pieces from the ancient military writers. They cover a fascinating range of topics - battle formations and manoeuvres, different types of troops, the art of generalship, methods for conducting and resisting a siege, the construction of artillery and fortifications, and every kind of ploy and trick used by generals to defeat their opponents are all included.
Some works are highly technical, while others make up a survey of this history of warfare and the reasons why past generals had been victorious or come to grief. The book also includes extracts from other historians who have interesting comments on warfare and society. Each piece is annotated with further explanation and context, making this an essential resource for everyone studying the army and warfare in the classical age.
Book Description
The first and only book to describe the seven secretive families and five far-flung companies that control the world's food supplies. Little has changed their central role since Morgan's best-selling book first appeared in 1979.
Customer Reviews:
Eating is a fundamental reality to citizens and politicians.......2002-12-24
I first read this book 20 years ago and was awed by the importance of the distribution of grain to the world, and particularly to one-party dictators. Anyone who understands political power knows that a small number of soldiers can control a much larger populace of people i.e. the German SS figured one storm trooper for roughly every 1000 plus people. However, when those people are all hungry at the same time it becomes another matter entirely, as in more difficult.
This book shows how a few big companies control the distribution of grain throughout the world. In so doing they are not prone to accept "aging receivables" from dictators, tin-pot or otherwise. Every political leader must understand the importance of grain or face a coup. Of course, one can find those who have lasted longer than others, but only at the cost of so weakening their state that it ultimately crumbles from internal implosion.
Read this book to understand history and more importantly the origen of our food supply and how it reaches our table.
A Must Know for Everybody.......2000-04-07
An excellent work detailing how only a handful of families have controlled the worlds grain trade for centuries. A great piece for families that till the soil, but one that is even more important to the people who live in the city; and have no idea of the power and control that these families wield. Reading this book will show you how these families control the cheap food policies as well as the commodities markets and other products world wide.
The Grain Industry has it's own OPEC.......2000-01-12
I am a captain on Mississippi River towboats. I have pushed millions of tons of grain down the Mississippi River for years. But I never really understood the gobal impact of the world's grain company's until I read this book.
Now I understand the real power behind families such as Cargil and ADM's Andreas.
Excellent Material - Important to us all........1999-11-13
We can begin to understand the importance or lack thereof for our country's cheap food policy. Point being, Cargil is buying out Continental Grain. The total purchase price is $300 million. Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan make that much money in 2 years. An enclosed football stadium costs more than that. There is one of them in every major city in America. Something is wrong with that picture. The importance placed on other things, and the lack of understanding as to the realities of life are almost mind boggling. Merchants of Grain is a book that cuts to the inner most core of real power and control. We all eat. We need to put self behind us, and focus on basics, i.e. why are we so blest as a country? We need to be gracious. Thank you Farmers, Ranchers, and others in the real food chain.

Customer Reviews:
THE Authority on buying and selling grain!.......2000-05-04
I have been using "Merchant's Edge" as my bible to run my grain departments for the past five years. The book is easy to read, and organized in effective, specific chapters. If you're a grain business or a farmer, "Merchant's Edge" will NOT make your eyes glaze over while you're reading confused, long pages that most text-books can do.
The authors have smartly included many charts and diagrams that help illustrate the mechanics of calculating basis, minimum-price contracts, margins, etc.
The sharp grain business owners or managers will (or should) have a well-worn, dog-eared copy of "Merchant's Edge" within arm's reach of their office desk, and make sure each employee who deals with the financial end of grain merchandising have their own personal copy!

Book Description
In the fall of 1881, just one year after Minneapolis surpassed St. Louis as the nation's leading producer of flour, twenty-one prominent businessmen met in the basement of a fledging bank to create one of the Mill City's most enduring commercial enterprises. Known originally as the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, the Minneapolis Grain Exchange provided a market for most of the grains grown in the rich, dark soil of the Upper Midwest, particularly the much-prized spring wheat. Throughout the decades, buyers and sellers on the trading floor engaged in elaborate rituals that helped move farmer's grain to the consumer's table. As its members traded thousands, then millions, then billions of dollars in cash grains and futures, the exchange grew into one of the premier grain markets in the world. It's been 125 years since the city's first generation of business leaders--millers and manufacturers, bankers and railroad men--founded the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. What began as an essential element in the making of modern Minneapolis, as well as personal and philanthropic fortune, continues to play a vital role in the city's and the region's economic success.

Book Description
From her saltwater home near the shores of Puget Sound, novelist and essayist Brenda Peterson explores the tidal pull of the mist-shrouded Pacific Northwest. In Living by Water, Peterson first described for readers nature's "lightning revelation...the simple rhythms of water." As she observes seals, whales, and seabirds; watches the changing tides and weather, she notes how the natural world shapes the lives and spirits of the inhabitants-animal and human-of her chosen home.
Her meditations, which range from a portrait of craggy, longtime environmentalist Joseph Meeker to a description of her love of dolphins, to a deadly comparison between Washington's Green River and South America's Amazon, all entreat the reader to recognize the need to heal the treaty broken between humans and their natural world.
From Henry Thoreau's reflections on Walden Pond to Annie Dillard's journal of life at Tinker Creak, writers have found that water can shape a life and a philosophy. In that same tradition, Brenda Peterson writes, "I've apprenticed myself to Puget Sound because I believe it will teach me more about living than what I've learned so far." Living by Water offers timeless wisdom that applies to all people in all places who long to awaken to what naturalist Thomas Berry has called the "dream of the earth."
