Great Book For People Who Would Like to Learn More About.......2000-04-06
I bought this book partly because I know that Turkish food features a lot of meat, and I'll be visiting with my wife who is a vegetarian. Can you believe that a book that is *ALL* about food, does not even mention vegetarianism, nor when they list "handy phrases for restaurants" do they list any phrases that deal with the topic? For that matter, they don't deal with any topic having to deal with food allergies, being on a diet, etc. Essentially this is a book about helping people make smart choices when eating in Turkey, but the only people they want to help are people who will eat anything. I should have saved my money.
Product Description
Young Elizabeth Balcombe, or Betsy to friends and family, found life on the remote island of St Helena intolerably dull. Most fourteen-year-olds would. Her father had been posted to that unforgiving station in the Atlantic and, being a family man, he took his family with him.
Life was bleak in Balcombe's bungalow on the fringe of James Town. But then, in October 1815, the situation was transformed by the arrival of an unusual visitor. Napoleon Bonaparte, one-time master of Europe, now prisoner and exile, stepped ashore. The Balcombes, like all the islanders, were amazed. And even more so when Napoleon, taking a fancy to their bungalow (the Briars) moved in with them. Betsy, overcoming her surprise at sharing her home with an emperor, delighted in his company and the two became firm friends.
Miss Betsy Balcombe made the most of her time with the world's most famous prisoner, keenly observing all around her, noting down conversations, recording moods. The result is a unique set of memoirs which records in astonishing detail an almost unbelievable story. That of how a precocious teenager and an emperor talked, argued, played, confided and teased their way through grim years of exile on the barren rock of St Helena.
This attractive, illustrated edition brings this remarkable story back to life.

Napoleon ubicumque felix.......2005-09-10
Mrs. Abell (Betsy's married name) first published her account of Napoleon in serialized form in the New Century Magazine in 1843 and then in a book in 1844. The book was a great success and was republished in 1845 and 1853 and a French edition was published in 1898. It is likely that Mrs. Abell consulted the standard works on Napoleon's captivity- Barry O'Meara, Las Cases, Dr. Warden -to "refresh" her memory of events- but her colorful and vivid accounts of her mischievous pranks casts Napoleon in an interesting light. One commentator has praised Mr. Abell's "impartiality" in compiling her recollections and her little volume promises, as Betsy wrote, to "confine myself as far as possible, to what concerns Napoleon personally."
Thirteen-year-old Betsy Balcombe was the younger daughter of William Balcombe, Superintendent of Public Sales for the East India Company. The Balcombes resided at the Briars, a picturesquely situated cottage at little over a mile from Jamestown. Upon first hearing of Napoleon's exile on their island in October 1815, the inhabitants were amazed, not yet having heard of his return from Elba and the events of the Hundred Days. Betsy herself, no longer imaging that Napoleon was the boogey-man of childish legend, was nonetheless still terrified at the thought of the "ogre," the man who had "the most atrocious crimes imputed to him," living on the island. Betsy admits that her opinion of Napoleon, like that of her fellow countrymen, were largely based on the sensational reports of the newspapers of the day and on the opinions of French émigrés-his bitterest enemies-residing in Britain. Despite their fears Betsy and the rest of the inhabitants turned out to see Napoleon's landing on the island. And when the forty-six-year-old former Emperor first visited the Briars, Betsy lost her fear and became instead something of a Bonapartist. Many years later Napoleon III was to reward Betsy with 500 hectares of land with vineyards in Algeria in memory of her comfort to his uncle. Betsy died in 1871 at the age of sixty-nine.
Betsy saw a Napoleon that most of his enemies and friends in his former life had not known. Napoleon, perhaps because he was missing out on the opportunity to see his own son grow up, or maybe because he had missed out on something during his own childhood, always seemed to enjoy joining in on the Balcombe children's antics, taking as well as giving, even when "Mademoiselle Betsee" threatened him with his own sword. Gourgaud wrote that "The children call His Majesty 'Monsieur,' and behave most shockingly... But he did not seem to mind." Betsy puts the case simply that for "the exile of Longwood," as she names him, it was the monotony of his circumstances that led him to take such a keen interest in trivialities.
For young Betsy Napoleon was always very much a human, not the marble man of history, and she manages well in bringing out the humanness of the Emperor. Betsy and the other Balcombe children called Napoleon "Bony" and Napoleon nicknamed Betsy the "rosebud of St. Helena." Madam Montholon called Betsy "une petite sauvage." Biographer Frank McLynn however sees Napoleon's relationship with Betsy as "bizarre," perhaps hinting at rumors unfairly bruited about at the time. The Marquis de Montchenu, whom Napoleon called that "old imbecile," the Royalist French Commissioner on the island, thought Betsy the "wildest little girl he had ever seen-une folle," and spread the rumor that Napoleon was having an affair with the young Betsy.
Considering the natural interest aroused by the story of the Emperor and the gamine (including many novels, children's books and even projected movies about the incident), readers interested in Napoleon's stay on St. Helena will want to own a copy of this book. Ravenhall has given us an excellent new addition of Betsy Balcombe's charming (and sometimes surprisingly insightful) memoirs of her youthful friendship with the exiled Napoleon. French historian Marcel Dunan called these memoirs "one of the most pleasant sources to read" about Napoleon on St. Helena. Lord Roseberry has commented that "a strange mildew" rested on all the memoirs of St. Helena, but surely Betsy's recollections have little of the mildewed smell about them. Ravenhall has modernized the text, updating spelling and punctuation. The title has be changed from the nondescript and unwieldy Recollections of the Emperor Napoleon; During the First Three Years of His Captivity on the Island of St. Helena: Including the Time of His Residence at Her Father's House, The Briars. Names left blank, in the nineteenth-century convention for protecting the identities of certain personages, have been identified where possible, and footnotes have been added. Otherwise the text of the original has been preserved. A useful introduction fleshing out the story told by Betsy, by Napoleonic expert J. David Markham, is also included. Numerous well-selected black and white illustrations have been added to the text.
A Must Read.......2005-04-26
Betsy Balcombe met Napoleon on Saint Helena in 1815 when she was in her early teens, and this book is the only book this Napoleon enthusiast has come across that was written by a totally disinteresed party - one who knew the Emperor only as a human being. If one has read the Saint Helena memoriors of Las Cases (Memorial of Saint Helene), Bertrand, Marchand (excellent), etc., one sees a great deal of what Miss Balcombe saw - the kind, generous, tender man who was generous to a fault; but those memoirs were written by adults who saw him as their Emperor, and had political axes to grind. Betsy writes about things from a guiless child's point of view. She does not attempt to present, for example, either the Emperor, or Hudson Lowe's arguments regarding the Emperor's situation. She just tells things as they were. This book was written by Miss Balcombe as an adult, and the illustrations are absulutely beautiful. This writer believes this is a MUST READ for people of all ages, and one hopes after reading this book, readers will endeavor to obtain a copy of the Emperor's last will and testament as further proof of his thoughtfulness, his kindness, and his beautiful soul which he must have thought necessary to hide from many people, lest they believe him to be anything other than what many Anglophiles believe to this day - a hard, cruel war-monger who cared nothing of life or love.
A glaring error this reader found was a claim by Betsy in the end of the book that Napoleon disliked literature. This is untrue, and the average adult probably would not have discussed, "The Sorrows of Young Werther," or "Paul and Virginia," both favorites, with a young teenager. Read this book - you will not be sorry.

Book Description
"Think, my dear -- just think what it will be like, to be known as the girl who freed the great Napoleon Bonaparte!"
Fourteen-year-old English girl Betsy Balcombe and her family have an unusual houseguest: Napoleon Bonaparte, former emperor of France and the most feared man on earth. Once lord and master to eighty-two million souls, now, in 1815, Napoleon is a captive of the British people. Stripped of his empire and robbed of his young family and freedom, he is confined to the forbidding, rat-infested island of St. Helena.
The one bright star in Napoleon's black sky is Betsy, a blazingly rebellious teenager whose family is reluctantly housing the notorious prisoner. Betsy is the only foreigner Napoleon's ever met who is not impressed by him -- and Napoleon is more than intrigued.
An unexpected alliance is formed. And a remarkable friendship between emperor and girl spawns gossip, and inspires Betsy to hatch a daring and dangerous scheme that could threaten both their lives and shake entire empires to their foundations.
Customer Reviews:
This book made me really like Napoleon!.......2007-03-20
This book makes you see Napoleon Bonaparte as something more than an evil ruler. I couldn't stop reading this book; it was awesome! It's a mix of a romance novel and a history novel. This book's well written.
When Napoleon is captured he is sent to St. Helena. There he stays with the Balcombe family. The family has two girls and two boys. Napoleon gradually becomes friends with the youngest girl, Betsy.
This book has such an emotional ending; I almost cried. I highly recommend this book. It could please anyone especially history lovers.
Betsy and the Emperor.......2006-05-09
I highly suggest this book, Betsy and the Emperor. It shows that two opposite people can have a strong compassion for each other. Characters have tension between each other that they must overcome, such as being free of the vast mountains and valleys of ST. Helena, or being stuck there with the one you love. After someone important dies Boney doesn't have a very good chance of escaping. Stricter Laws and Rules are then set on what the Emperor Boney can do. Out side her house when she got back from boarding school she recognized a sickly-sweet smell. Betsy has to make tough decisions and she doesn't always make the right choices. Now it is up to you to find out what happens to the Emperor Boney and Betsy. By: Taylor Farley (6th grade)
I could not finish this book fast enough!.......2006-01-03
It sounded like an interesting enough YA book. Betsy Balcombe, a resident of St. Helena, returns home from her London boarding school. St. Helena, you might recognize, was one of the islands Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled too. Betsy arrives home only to have Napoleon arrive several days later, and with his lodgings not yet finished, he is sent to live in her guesthouse. A relationship begins between the two, and while I'm pretty sure the author was trying to create a friendship between Betsey and Napoleon, I found it sort of creepy that Napoleon would want a purely platonic friendship with a fourteen year old. Putting that bit aside, the book moved incredibly slowly, and while I kept expecting things to really pick up, they didn't till the very end. By that point, I just wanted to finish.
too "modern" ideas were inserted in Betsy .......2005-11-20
It will appeal to young female teens but the historical setting and female perspective will alienate many teens, especially reluctant readers. Also I several issues with the story itself: first it was slow reading until the middle, second even though it is historical fiction I felt that too many "modern" ideas were inserted in Betsy and several of the other characters, some of those issues would not have been dealt with in that matter, especially the frankness of sex and premarital sex, at that, lastly the lack of historical accuracy when dealing with actual events and people always poses an issue with me. I feel that there should be some responsibility and accountability for truth even in fiction; particularly when Betsy attempts to help "Boney" escape even at the cost of another's life, the author even admits that there is no evidence for this.
Great!.......2005-10-11
this is a novel about Napoleon's days on st helena. the heroine Betsy befriends the emperor which turns out into an amazing story. a great read perfect for history lovers and not.

Book Description
In order for biodiversity to be conserved, it is important to know how and where diverse populations of plants and animals exist, to understand the effects of human impacts on them, and to find the means by which these impacts can be lessened and even reversed. While tropical systems are known to be among the most diverse and most threatened globally, tropical freshwater systems have been neglected, and the tremendous variety of fish, amphibians, invertebrates and plants that live in them are poorly known yet seriously threatened. This comprehensive book brings together a wealth of information on the fish of tropical African systems, and discusses how these systems evolved, what holds them together, and what is tearing them apart.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.
Book Description
As with its predecessor, this edition uses a practical non-mathematical approach. Features a number of recent developments in the field including two-dimensional methods, solid state NMR and an enlarged treatment of Fourier Transform methods. Contains numerous two-color diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
OK, but not great........2005-04-29
The real strength of this book is in its compilation of a vast amount of physical data in tables and spectra. It is geared towards the practical chemist who wants to learn and understand classical NMR spectroscopy. The physicist will be disappointed by the convoluted explanations and lengthy paragraphs. There are no errors in the book as far as I know, but the explanations given and proofs aren't necessarily the shortest and most elegant. You'd need to consult other books for that. Also disappointing is its wide use of old school quantum mechanical wave functions rather than density matrix notation. While this is fine, it makes the derivations too long, and for no good reason.
Also disappointing is the price of $100 for a paperback! I boought this book 2 years ago for $70 at a local bookstore. How can the publisher increase its price by $30 over two years? This is absolutely scandalous given that it is only a paperback. You'd be better off buying a cheap pirate Chinese edition for $10.
A complete and comprehensive book about NMR.......2001-06-18
I strongly recommend this book about NMR principles by Harald Gunther. I study chemistry and it was useful for me in structural analysis of organic compounds. I think its most atracttive feature is the the clear and comprehensive way that uses to describe the NMR principles and experiments (including pulse experiments and 2D NMR). You understand what you read without having to read it once again. This book is also very complete and includes some solved exercises

Fitting Models to Biological Data Using Linear and Nonlinear Regression: A Practical Guide to Curve Fitting
ASIN: 0471376841 |
Book Description
Helps any serious data analyst with a computer to recognize the strengths and limitations of data, to test the assumptions implicit in the least squares methods used to fit the data, to select appropriate forms of the variables, to judge which combinations of variables are most influential, and to state the conditions under which the fitted equations are applicable. This edition includes numerous extensions and new devices such as component and component-plus-residual plots, cross verification with a second sample, and an index of required x-precision; also, the search for better subset equations is enlarged to cover 262,144 alternatives. The methods described have been applied in agricultural, environmental, management, marketing, medical, physical, and social sciences. Mathematics is kept to the level of college algebra.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful applied resource.......2001-08-29
This review refers to the first edition, which, aside from the dated computer programs used for analyses, discusses a variety of topics that are not typically covered in traditional regression texts. Especially valuable is chapter 9 which consists of a situation where using a combination of linear and nonlinear fits simultaneously, complete with both qualitative and quantitative data. A great extension past books like Draper and Smith and Myers and Montgomery.
classic practical guide to fitting regression models.......2001-05-04
This is a classic text on regression. I am only familiar with an earlier edition but I am sure the style the writing and the content has not changed significantly. This book gives good practical advice as to how to fit regression models and considers all the pitfalls that applied statisticians are faced with. Many of the issues that are raised today including problems of overfitting, multiple collinearity, outliers, diagnostic plots etc. were all considered by these applied statisticians some 30 years ago.
Extremely valuable. Covers topics left out of recent texts........1998-08-24
This book is a classic work in the field of data analysis which is often cited in more recent texts. In the present world of Windows, SAS, SPSS, S-Plus, etc., the pioneering work of Daniel and Wood on computer applications to data analysis looks somewhat dated. However, it will repay careful study by anyone who wants to do thorough analysis of real world data, especially manufacturing process data, because it includes topics, such as nested data sets, which are common in industrial data, but regrettably cannot be analyzed by most standard linear regression techniques as presented in more recent texts. It is a very valuable adjunct to books like Draper and Smith.

Download Description
This is an accessible, wide-ranging and informed introduction to Shakespeare's comedies and romances. Rather than taking each play in isolation, the chapters trace recurring issues, suggesting both the continuity and the variety of Shakespeare's practice and the creative use he made of the conventions he inherited. The first section puts Shakespeare in the context of classical and Renaissance comedy and comic theory, the work of his Elizabethan predecessors and the traditions of popular festivity. The second section traces a number of themes through Shakespeare's early and middle comedies, dark comedies and late romances, establishing the key features of his comedy as a whole and illuminating particular plays by close analysis. Individual chapters draw on contemporary politics, rhetoric, and the history of Shakespeare production. Written by experts in the relevant fields, the chapters bring the reader up to date on current thinking and frequently challenge long-standing critical assumptions.
