Helpful trip guide.......2007-08-14
This map helped our friend feel more confident and informed about her pending trip to Cape Verde to work with other folks wanting to support the island's development of tourism to bring a better level of living to
the natives. Our friend was anxious about going to such an unknown part of the world. The map arrived the day before she left and deeply supported her in many ways, giving bits of cultural background about places and letting her know her friends care. I did not find any other
map/guide about Cape Verde when I searched on line.

Book Description
In this new paperback edition of the award winning, "The Nine Lives of Romeo Crumb - Life One", the secret world of cats is revealed in an epic tale of feline civil war where we first meet young Romeo, a stray who finds himself battered between two very different worlds. It's the domestic cats, the Sticks, vs. the street cats, the Alleys, as battle lines are drawn, warriors train for combat and a hero emerges to inspire a nation. Fraught with danger from page one, Romeo loses his family, finds a new home with "his person", 9-year old Dennis Crumb, and is befriended by a wise cat who lives nearby. "Life One" ends with Romeo's first death. But fear not, our hero-in-the-making lives again in "Life Two".
Customer Reviews:
It's the Cat's Meow!.......2007-06-01
Loved this book and have gone on to read the other two in the series so far. What an original concept and so beautifully executed. My [..]daughter had a "Romeo Crumb" birthday party where the girls all read their favorite parts of the books aloud. L. Rifkin (a man or woman?) is the next J.K. Rowling!
A Display of poor taste, incompetently written.......2007-04-14
As an adult who likes fantasy-fiction based on cats, I found the series on Romeo Crumb (3 books to date) disappointing both in their story and in their value as a literary product. The premise underlying each book is violence and arbitrary conflict between the "good" domestic cats (called Stiks) and the very very "bad" homeless cats (the Allies). Anyone who knows anything about cats knows that there are nasty housecats and ferals sweet as angels, so I wasn't taken in by this way of imposing a crude imitation of good versus evil onto a story supposedly about cats. Equally ominous is the sense of cosmic evil lurking in the background of human lives tortured by poverty, helplessness, and hopelessness.
Characterization is for the most part crude. Cute little girl cats are little more than that, cute paper dolls. Even Romeo himself is shallow and it is hard to maintain interest in his fate. Granted, there are some attempts at wry humor, as the most disgusting figures turn out to be the most heroic. Heroic because they die.
The literary product is clumsy and poorly organized. The verbal expression is full of misspelled words and ungrammatical phrases, like the work of a pre-teen with a poor education. Definitely not the kind of material to signal any sort of literary talent.
The contemporary novels by Erin Hunter in the Warriors series are far more effective and competently written, despite their trend towards shallow characters and skimpy plot lines. Tad Williams' Tailchaser holds up to repeated readings, something hard to find in books of this sort. My overall favorite is an out-of-print one-off by Joy Smith Aiken entitled Solo's Journey. Too bad there aren't more like it in a genre of animal-based fiction that is only too hard to find.
Greatest Fantasy Cat Book Ever!.......2006-05-04
My daughter read this book when she was nine and would like readers to know that she found its action, dialogue and characters to be captivating. She would recommend this book highly because it's great to see the world from a cat's perspective. For instance, catnip is called "The Nip" and it's viewed as extremely harmful from the cats' viewpoint, whereas humans think it's fun to watch cats' behavior after they've had some. Read this book and you will have a sudden urge to read Book Two!!
What A Great Read!.......2005-09-14
My 11 year old son, who doesn't like to read, bought this book at a book fair and couldn't put it down. I read it too and loved it. We both found it exciting, funny, and well worth our time. You will too. Romeo Crumb is a great character. Don't miss this one! Can't wait to read about his other 8 lives.
THE NINE LIVES OF ROMEO CRUMB-LIFE ONE.......2005-05-25
This is a wonderful book filled with detailed storytelling, visual images that stimulate the imagination, and witty dialogue. L. Rifkin takes us inside the world of cats as they live their lives, and soon one forgets they are cats because the situations are so humanlike. Both my 3rd grader and my 6th grader loved Romeo and his friends and villains, which prompted me to read the book as well. Children have become such sophistacted readers since the emergence of "Harry Potter", and I feel L. Rifkin never talks down to them and presents the dangers of animal life accurately and with fun. We can't wait for "Life Two."

Book Description
The first two chapters of this invaluable book trace the developments of the chemistry and macromolecular structures, respectively, of proteins and nuclei acids. Similarly, the introductions to the succeeding chapters review, step by step, the historical landmarks in the topics covered. These include discoveries of biological phosphate esters, nucleotides and nucleotide coenzymes (important in intermediary metabolism), the nature of the genetic material and biological synthesis of proteins, formulation of the problem of the genetic code, and perspectives on bioenergetics.
The selected papers illustrate the developments of the chemical synthesis of nucleotides and nucleotide coenzymes of ribo- and deoxy-ribo-polynucleotides (RNA, DNA), of the total synthesis of genes in the laboratory, and principles for gene amplification (PCR). Another major section covers studies of enzymes that degrade nucleic acids, the structure of transfer RNA and its role in protein synthesis, and the author's work on the elucidation of the genetic code. Finally, there are descriptions of the studies on biological membranes and the membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin, a biological proton pump. These studies elucidated the mechanism of proton translocation, which is central to bioenergetics.

Praise for The Laboratory Handbook by Gary S. Coyne
"This is probably the most useful volume I have encountered for many years and should be made compulsory reading for all those involved in research, particularly new research students."
-Chromatographia
"The book will be valuable for readers needing to understand the theory and proper use, cleaning, and storing methods of laboratory equipment. Safety issues are thoroughly covered. The book is a useful 'how-to-use' reference for students, novices, and experienced laboratory personnel."
-JACS
An updated version of the critically acclaimed Laboratory Handbook, this guide to laboratory materials, equipment, and techniques is an important resource for students as well as veteran scientists and lab technicians.
From vacuum technology and glass vacuum systems to volumetric glassware, gas-oxygen torches, and cryogenic tanks, The Laboratory Companion provides complete coverage of all commonly used lab equipment, including essential information about its selection, use, cleaning, and maintenance. It clearly explains the historical development and rationale behind how and why things are done in the lab, and includes helpful guidelines and step-by-step procedures for each topic discussed.
Since glassware is typically the most prevalent type of lab equipment, much of the book is devoted to the properties and handling of glass apparatus, with additional material on rubber and plastic tubing, corks, stoppers, and O-rings. Readers will also find broad coverage of measurement systems, high- and low-temperature apparatus and techniques, compressed gases, vacuum systems, and other essential subjects.
Customer Reviews:
Highly reccommend to anyone using lab equipment.......2007-04-30
Mr. Coyne's experience and reseach shines through in the text. He includes excellent reference materials, charts and tables guide you on many practical lab activities, from simple, such as how to insert tubing into rubber stoppers, to complex, as in operating vacumn devices. In view of the excellent job he did in this book, I have requested that he consider writing a second in a series addressing how, why and when to use specific or unusual glassware, such as Graham, Allihn, and the various kinds of condensers, drying tubes, separatory funnels and the many other types of specialized glassware there seems to be little published about.
clinical laboratories methods.......2000-06-03
i want to review the some clinical laboratories methods ;as serology, parasitology ....andhematology.
Most useful book in the lab!.......1998-03-08
The usefulness of this text rivals the CRC Handbook. It has a good balance of readable text and reference material, and everything is well arranged and easy to find. It's well worth Amazon's asking price (which is what I paid at the college bookstore).
An essential handbook for Chemistry labs........1997-11-05
Coyne's book shares a wealth of information regarding laboratory equipment such as standard glassware, volumetrics, vacuum greases and oils. It also manages to cover fundamental basic vacuum and air sensitive techniques in terms that don't require a Phd. I highly recommend this book to Chemistry technicians , graduate students and scientists as a reference guide to safe procedures and materials.

Finally - An excellent book about temperature.......2000-04-26
This is a set of books (3 parts). The writing is clear, logical and easy to understand but brings your knowledge level to a much higher level. The author writes not to impress the reader with his background or research but to teach the reader about the subject. Concepts, which I have read about in other books but did not really understand yet, are now clear. I altered my experimental setup and I now have a better measurement system. I purchased vol 3 (basically thermocouples), read it, then purchased and read parts 1 and 2.

Product Description
This book considers the behavior of fluids in a low-gravity environment (e.g. spacecraft) with special emphasis on application in PMD (propellant management device) systems. In the compensated gravity environment of a spacecraft, the hydrostatic pressure decreases to very low values depending on the residual acceleration, and surface tension forces become dominant. Consequently, surface tension can be used to transport and position liquids if the residual acceleration and the resulting hydrostatic pressure are small compared to the capillary pressure. One prominent application is the use of PMDs in surface-tension satellite tanks. PMDs must ensure that the tank outlet is covered with liquid whenever outflow is demanded. Furthermore, PMDs are used to ensure expulsion and refilling of tanks for liquids and gases for life support, reactants, and experiment supplies. Since PMD designs are not testable on ground and thus completely rely on analytical or numerical concepts, this book treats three different flow problems with analytical, numerical and experimental means: the transient contour change between two static surface configurations (free surface oscillations), the capillary rise in tubes (capillary rise), and the flow through open capillary channels (choking). These problems are linked together by the same set of equations and boundary conditions which are necessary to model the fluid behavior, and by the same set of characteristic numbers.
