Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2007-09-08
Based on protocols in this book, I devised methods to complete my own experiments. I found the insights contained in the book completely indispensable. The range of topics it contains and the detail with which Freshney explains each point made the process of designing conditions for experiments rational and approachable. I highly recommend this book.
useful book.......2007-08-09
There are not a lot of glossy pretty pictures, which is a good thing for a no-nonsense instruction manual that gets the point across with what pictures it did have. I found it to be a very good complement to my cell culture class. Everything I learned in the lab was put into context nicely.
Save on Textbook.......2006-08-15
I purchased this book with a description of like new. I would say this is new. The previous person who used this did not even break in the binder. This is an excellent reference book, I have enjoyed reading the text up to this point.
Best Basic Book on Tisssue Culture.......2006-07-07
For many years Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells has been the gold standard of tissue culture reference books. This new edition adds and updates many techniques and continues to be the best book in its area. I use it extensively both for my own research and in teaching classes on tissue culture.
The best book on cell culture.......2005-01-09
Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells is a great book. It is writen on an easy style, it is concise and complete at the same time and it does teach you all the basics (and a little bit more) of cell culture. When I was doing my masters I didn't have a lot of help with my cell culture experiments and this book was fundamental for my research. The book covers everything, starting from the biology of cultured cells, equipments, design of the lab and asseptic technique and going all the way to primary culture, cloning and selection, cell separation, characterization, differentiation and more. The book (hard cover) is pretty resistant and it easily stands going to the bench (where you surely will be using it a lot). If you are thinking about spending money on a book about cell culture techniques this is the book! Don't think twice.
Book Description
The use of animal, including human, cell culture has expanded enormously during the last twenty years, with the new applications appearing all the time. This book guides the newcomer progressively through all those areas which are basic to the performance of cell culture. It will also prove
useful to the experienced worker entering a new field or setting up a new laboratroy, and as a source of reference on basic techniques. The topics covered include setting up and equipping a cell culture laboratory, sterilization of fluids and equipment, culture media, basic culture technique and the
maintenance of cell lines, primary culture and the isolation of new cell lines, specific cell types and their requirements, single cell cloning, quality control of cell lines and the prevention, detection, and cure of contamination.
Customer Reviews:
intro to cell culture.......2001-07-20
I found this book to be very helpful. The information is current and clearly presented. (other texts I purchased had more recent publication dates, but were clearly out-of-date in the techniques and equipment used).
I run a high through-put cell culture lab (about 4000 T175 per week). I purchased the text mainly as a training aid.
50% of my staff 'person hours' come from part time college students who only stayed for one or 2 semesters, thus I am faced with having to train new staff often.
This text gives a good, clear introduction to the basics of cell culture and sterile technique and significantly cut down on the amount of time it took me to train new staff. I made it required reading for all my staff!

Customer Reviews:
great help for a hike.......2005-09-13
this book does exactly what it intends to do - accurately describe hikes in the mountains of Maine in a compact manner. The description I needed for the mountain I was climbing was right on, and the book is nice and easy to carry along for reference or for interesting technical reading. If you like Maine and you like climbing, this book is perfect.
Excellent guide with one shortcoming.............2005-06-29
This book is necessary if one is going to plan a trip into the mountains of Maine, especially if these plans include Katahdin, or Baxter Peak.
That being said, the one shortcoming which could prove dangerous is the description of Knife Edge. The book mentions how very narrow the ridge is in some places, and the obvious points such as do not attempt in windy or wet conditions. But these are the obvious details one will see posted on the signout board before even entering the trail. However, one point which is not mentioned is the fact that Knife Edge necessitates a series of handholds and footholds across it, especially near the Pamola side, with little to no room for error or else serious injury or death may be the result. I have trekked extensively in Peru and Nepal so did not really have a problem with the ridge (though admittedly it was very difficult), but found myself taking alot of time looking for footholds and handholds much more often than I thought I ever would. The book should describe in painstaking detail this dangerous aspect of probably the most difficult ridge in Maine. Quite honestly, I was surprised it didn't after I got down and reread the part covering Knife Edge. Because of this I am dropping my rating from five stars to three, as this omission could be hazardous to someone's health in the future.
Even with this being said, I would like to do Knife Edge again someday......it was an amazing experience. But the rock climbing aspect of this ridge should be spelled out in the book. This is why most people buy the book in the first place- to get a very good idea of what they will see on the trail.
Good trail companion.......2002-08-31
This book provides accurate technical information about many Maine trails -- distance, difficulty, altitude, location of water, etc. I successfully used the guide to plan several hikes in Baxter State Park. The fold-out maps provided in the pocket-part are worth the price of the book. My complaints are these: (1) the book needs to be updated more frequently, and (2) it really needs a few well-placed photographs of the more challenging trails. For example, although I inferred the Dudley Trail up Mt. Katahdin was steep (based on the altitude and distance information provided), the book does nothing to convey the visceral impact of the view from Pamola Peak down to Chimney Pond Lake. It's dizzying in a way that makes you want to use your entrails for rope. And, that's something you don't want to discover from the summit.
Excellent Guide - but does not include Acadia.......2001-10-15
Like other AMC hiking guides in this series (AMC White Mountain Guide, for example), the book includes detailed trail descriptions and top-notch maps. However, be aware that although this guide claims to include "nearly 200 peaks," it does not include every little mountain in Maine (a very big state). Most notably, Acadia National Park is omitted from this book.
Finally, the maps, although excellent, are paper, not tyvek.
An Exellent Guide for anyone Hiking in Maine.......2000-07-08
This book is an exellent guide to anyone hiking in Maine. It details many trails, from long backpacking trips to short nature walks. Included with the guide are maps that are a valuable resource when hiking in the Maine wilderness. The only downside to the bguide is that it is only published every few years, and trails on private land sometimes change over time. Other than that it is a very detailed, complete guide to hiking in Maine

When Mike Gold has a heart attack and dies in his 1967 Firebird, the car sits in the family garage untouched for a year. May, Brooks, and Palmer Gold--all teenage girls in what May calls the "Tall, Blond, and Wonderful Family"--suffer from neglect as well when their mother goes to work overtime at the hospital to pay the bills. The three girls deal with their father's death in different ways: Brooks quits softball and starts drinking, Palmer ferociously focuses on pitching and TV, hiding her panic attacks from everyone, and May tries to keep the family together. As the family unravels, the Firebird endures. Palmer uses the back seat as a place to escape, Brooks takes it out for a spin when she's drunk (and gets arrested), and for the grand finale, the three girls take the battleship-sized car to Camden Yards to throw their father's ashes on the pitcher's mound. Fortunately, this is the act that allows the girls to start anew, like the phoenix rising.
Readers will appreciate the character of the only really steady force in this novel--the frizzy-haired, wonderfully goofy Pete Camp, May's one-time nemesis who ends up helping out the family and ultimately winning her heart. As engaging, wryly funny, and issue-rich as Ann Brashares's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Maureen Johnson's The Key to the Golden Firebird will no doubt appeal to a similar audience of teens dealing with their budding sexuality, peer pressure, and much, much more. (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
The funny thing about stop signs is that they're also start signs.
Mayzie is the brainy middle sister, Brooks is the beautiful but conflicted oldest, and Palmer's the quirky baby of the family. In spite of their differences, the Gold sisters have always been close.
When their father dies, everything begins to fall apart. Level–headed May is left to fend for herself (and somehow learn to drive), while her two sisters struggle with their own demons. But the girls learn that while there are a lot of rules for the road, there are no rules when it comes to the heart. Together, they discover the key to moving on – and it's the key to their father's Pontiac Firebird.
This critically acclaimed, totally compelling book is perfect for readers looking for both a fun ride and a life–changing journey from one of today's best new YA writers. And it fits perfectly in the glove compartment.
Customer Reviews:
The Key to the Golden Firebird.......2007-02-02
The book The Key to the Golden Firebird by Maureen Johnson was published by the Harper Collins Publishers in 2004. It has a total of 297 pages and the genre of the book is fiction. In this book you'll find yourself reading about death, drugs, love, and friendship.
This book is about three teenage sisters who struggle with their father's death. It takes place in the suburbs of Philadelphia and is told in the third person omniscient. The three sisters, Brooks, Mayzie, and Palmer, come up against the problems with money and severe depression. Brooks, who's only eighteen, gets involved with drugs; Mayzie overworks herself and tries desperately to find love; Palmer with draws herself and only goes out to play softball. As the problems worsen the girls realize the only way to overcome their personal obstacles is to work together.
After reading The Key to the Golden Firebird I noticed that this book can relate to every teenage girl, with the peer pressure, the boys, the sports, and the jobs. This story is very powerful and helps you to realize that you're never alone no matter your situation. It always made me want to read on and see what would happen next because everything that happened was described in such great detail it made me feel as if it was really happening to me.
This book is a great book and I would recommend it to any teenage girl whether she's going through a hard time and she can relate or not. It really inspires me to try to help others going through a hard time and if I ever need any help that I can always find someone who will listen.
powerful sisterly-love story.......2006-08-14
The death of their father sends the three Gold sisters into a tailspin. Brooks, the oldest, starts drinking. Palmer, the youngest, withdraws herself from everyone. May, the middle sister and the responsible one, is left alone. This is okay with her, since she is busy with her job at the coffee shop and studying. The girls are in danger of becoming complete strangers when the key to their father's car, a golden Firebird, is discovered. Together the girls take a trip that brings them together and sets them at ease-- finally-- with their father's death. This book is about the the importance of family and friends when problems arise, as well as discovering who your true friends really are. A touching, but not preachy, story on the impact of sisterly bonds, this book will strike a chord with girls everywhere, whether or not they have a sister.
The Golden Way .......2006-04-24
The Gold family has had a very hard time. Their dad died a year before the story takes place, ever since then they've had money problems and Brooks started drinking. There are three girls in the gold family, Brooks is the oldest, and May is in the middle and Palmer in the youngest. Brooks and Palmer are both in softball. They're in softball because their dad loved softball. May is really good at school and she works. Palmer is only a freshman and she is the starting pitcher on the varsity team, and she is doing a summer softball session. Brooks met this guy Dave and he convinced her to quit softball.
My dislikes of this book was when Brooks went to Dave's Party and got wasted. I didn't like that because Brooks could have been a great softball player. My Favorite part of the book was when Brooks got a DUI, because she finally got what she disserved.
I would recommend this book to girls that lost their dad because it would let them know that they are not the only ones that lost their dad. This book is for kids that like to read about real life stuff. I hope that you enjoy this book like I did.
............2006-02-18
Am I the only one who couldn't stand this book? It was so dull! It took me about two months to read it because I was constantly putting it down to read other, more interesting books. I didn't like one of the characters-- not one. It finally picked up near the end, but I disliked this story. Very Much.
Amazing story!.......2005-12-02
This book was wonderful! I liked how you could really tell the character's personalities. It was a very interesting story and I liked the way it ended. Full of adventure, good times and bad. A+

Book Description
This is the first monograph to present the fundamentals of adjoint equation theory and perturbation algorithms, exemplifying their applications by solutions of complex problems of mathematical physics. The earlier Russian version (1992) has been completely revised and supplemented with many new results for this edition, thus offering a unique compilation of the author's research in many areas of applied mathematics over the years. The first part of the book describes the theory of adjoint equations and perturbation algorithms and gives examples of applications to problems. Nonlinear problems and statements of inverse problems based on methods of adjoint equations and perturbation are considered. The second part focuses on the applications of adjoint equations theory and perturbation algorithms to the solution of concrete problems, such as global and regional environmental protection, interaction between atmosphere and ocean, and data assimilation problems. This volume will be of great value to a wide range of researchers, workers and engineers interested in creating new technologies for designing and planning experiments, while solving concrete problems, especially for those working on numerical mathematics.
Book Description
"Spiegelman's drawings are like demonic woodcuts: every angle, line, and curve jumps out at you. Stylishness and brutishness are in perfect accord."
-- The New York Times
Art Spiegelman's sinister and witty black-and-white drawings give charged new life to Joseph Moncure March's
Wild Party, a lost classic from 1928. The inventive and varied page designs offer perfect counterpoint to the staccato tempo of this hard-boiled jazz-age tragedy told in syncopated rhyming couplets.
Here is a poem that can make even readers with no time for poetry stop dead in their tracks. Once read, large shards of this story of one night of debauchery will become permanently lodged in the brain. When
The Wild Party was first published, Louis Untermeyer declared: "It is repulsive and fascinating, vicious and vivacious, uncompromising, unashamed . . . and unremittingly powerful. It is an amazing tour de force."
Customer Reviews:
lost classic found.......2007-03-11
Dark, seductive and brilliantly written, Joseph Moncure March's The Wild Party offers up a cautionary tale in the key of jazz and debauchery. Highly recommended. One of my favorite pieces of literature.
Worth the read.......2006-11-03
I greatly enjoyed this book, complete with wonderful illustrations!
It was a quick read and it was the exact text thrust into Andrew Lippa's musical by the same name! Wonderful history and research for the musical!
Excellent!.......2006-08-17
I decided to buy this book for no other reason than that I loved the 1949 Robert Wise film, "The Set-up", and wanted to check out the other book written by the original story's author, Joseph Moncure March. Certainly the brief description of the book made it even easier to buy.
But now having read it in one sitting, I was blown away at how brilliant it was! The poetic style is very easy to get into, and its use to tell this gripping tale was amazing. It never seems forced in the least, but flows well and succeed's in pulling the reader into the party itself.
The characters are great, the kind that one wishes to know of some more. Queenie remains the center of the story, and rightfully so, she is the most developed and most fascinating.
Apparently this book was banned in Boston, and I guess it is understandable given the times. Still, even today the story maintains a kind of rawness and edge that stays with the reader.
I have not seen the move or the Broadway plays, and chances are won't, the original poem is more than satisfying enough for me.
Very very hghly recommended.
Powerful narrative, but I can do without the illustrations.......2003-06-21
My interest in THE WILD PARTY started with the flop American-International Picture of 1975, a Merchant & Ivory production, with James Coco, Perry King and Raquel Welch. THE HERBERT HOOVER DRAG "stayed with me" for years, to the extent that I expect to perforate a Pianola roll of this music, using the soundtrack of the out-of-print Embassy VHS tape for the source.
Few reviewers have probably seen the original 1928 book, which I have, in my player roll Studio, here in Maine. Thus, I can compare the 1999 revival version with what was sold (quietly, or under the table) in the late 'Twenties.
The illustrations destroy my images of the narrative, since they remind me of a 'Forties "noir" film and not a 'Twenties apartment, which the author vividly describes, in his engaging minimalist poetic epic (or whatever this prose is called). The few pen-and-ink illustrations show Burrs as a James Coco type, physically ... and the text for Black (the Perry King character, in the film: Dale Sword) sounds not unlike a thumbnail bio for him, as well. Far better to have drawn from images of old MacFadden magazines (the sleazy publications of that day) or stills from silent movies, for the modern illustrations.
The 1928 book has only a few drawings, and - perhaps - for good reason. As with radio, in the days of drama (before television), the theater of the mind conveys the major impressions.
Sans serif type and the lack of "word clusters", plus spaces, which pepper the original volume, are also a downer, for me. The power of the raw story is heightened by the dignity of the Garamond (or whatever) typeface, in the 1928 book.
Having said the above, this book is better than none, so I would recommend it. Only 750 copies were printed, of the first edition, by Pascal Convici (mine being #459). As with the other reviewers, I kept being drawn back to the narrative, repeatedly. No pictures were necessary!
Regards, Douglas Henderson
ARTCRAFT Music Rolls...
Brilliant.......2001-06-07
A brilliant piece of writing. I truly enjoyed this book.March has created a vivid world with a minimal amount of words and a very interesting style of poetry. I don't know that I've ever read an extended poem (for lack of a better word, it doesn't really qualify as an epic) that had me so involved and so interested in the story being told. The illustrations are amazing in this edition of the book as well. Highly recommended!
