Book Description
What is the minimum dimension of a niche space necessary to represent the overlaps among observed niches? This book presents a new technique for obtaining a partial answer to this elementary question about niche space. The author bases his technique on a relation between the combinatorial structure of food webs and the mathematical theory of interval graphs.
Professor Cohen collects more than thirty food webs from the ecological literature and analyzes their statistical and combinatorial properties in detail. As a result, he is able to generalize: within habitats of a certain limited physical and temporal heterogeneity, the overlaps among niches, along their trophic (feeding) dimensions, can be represented in a one-dimensional niche space far more often than would be expected by chance alone and perhaps always. This compatibility has not previously been noticed. It indicates that real food webs fall in a small subset of the mathematically possible food webs.
Professor Cohen discusses other apparently new features of real food webs, including the constant ratio of the number of kinds of prey to the number of kinds of predators in food webs that describe a community. In conclusion he discusses possible extensions and limitations of his results and suggests directions for future research.

Customer Reviews:
Good collection of info, but no need to buy the book........2001-03-10
This book is useful tool to acquaint readers with a variety of air-travel info. Especially interesting are the details on what happens if you're denied boarding (or "bumped"), as well as tips on getting good fares. As such, this is a good handbook. However, the title is misleading, because the airlines do in fact tell you the information it contains. The majority of the content in this book is readily available on the Internet, if you're willing to look for it. The airlines' web pages are a good place to start, as most of them explain their denied boarding procedures. The DOT's web site also has an excellent selection of free articles on mnay of the same topics this book discusses. If you'd like to get a bunch of info in one convenient place, Frommer's is a good place to start. However, it's not hard to invest a little more time to find the same stuff online for free.
What the Airlines Never Tell You.......2000-07-11
What the Airlines Never Tell You, a new book from Frommer's, is an exceptionally useful handbook for people who want to maximize their air travel experiences. Author Maureen Clarke provides tips on everything from conquering the fear of flying and beating jet lag to a wealth of insight on how to get a great seat, cut the costs of travel, and increase your odds of getting an upgrade. I read all 300 pages straight through in one sitting and have plenty of dog eared pages to reference the next time I fly. As someone who loves to travel, I appreciated the detailed suggestions that she has to offer: whether or not you may want to buy travel insurance and Consumer Reports recommendations on best sources; products you can buy to make your inflight experience more comfortable, along with their prices and sources (for instance the Bucky travel pillow...), and sources and costs for around the world tickets (she suggests Airtreks, and references a sampmle route of San Francisco, London, Bombay, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and San Francisco for ... as a recent offering.) It's an excellent resource and well worth [the price] and a couple of reading hours for the time, money and aggravation it promises to save.
Book Description
You're headed for your worst vacation ever: while the rest of your family is vacationing in Hawaii, you have to work on your uncle Norbert's pig farm raising money to replace the roof you accidentally destroyed with your gunpowder rocket. Suddenly the bus you are on sputters to a halt, and it's still six miles away from the farm! You're hot, hungry, tired, and thirsty, and big, dark clouds are building up on the horizon. It'll take hours before a tow truck arrives and gets you going again.
If you decide to get off the bus and walk, turn to page 56. If you decide to try to get some sleep until the tow truck comes, turn to page 9. But be careful! This bad day could get a lot worse -- you might get caught in the middle of a terrible storm, sucked up into a tornado! Or you may finally make it to your uncle's pig farm -- where your adventures really begin!
What happens next in the story? It all depends on the choices you make. How does the story end? Only you can find out! And the best part is that you can keep reading and rereading until you've had not one but many incredibly daring experiences!

Book Description
Ebenezer Le Page, a man of the Channel 4 Islands, tells his story from the moment we meet him; in mid sentence, we are spellbound. He is funny and contrary with a furious, loving attachment to the past and an old man's querulous ness towards the now. His is a life crammed rich with family quarrels, tragedies, and neighboring feuds that reach across generations and between sexes. A remarkable creation, this is a hypnotic story of enduring friendships and sorrows, joys and loves, kinships and animosities, a brilliant and intricate novel - a classic.
Edwards has created a unique voice. In his introduction, John Fowles tells us that Edwards "...manages...despite the way characters meander almost haphazardly in and out of his pages, despite the minute stitch of social detail, to carry us through with him, at times to the point where we no longer care how inconsequential or digressive the story becomes, as long as that voice is still speaking."

Endurance required.......2007-09-13
This is a book for good readers only. And for good readers who enter the book at the right time when they are willing to invest the effort to get far enough into the story to care about it. There is much to complain about. It is a first person narrative written by a person who is not always likeable about other people who are not always likeable and who are often two dimensional. It is written in an idiosyncratic style that reflects both the education level and patois of the narrator. The setting is limited, obscure and unfamiliar to most readers. Somehow those very complaints gradually reverse themselves to become the strengths of the book. The author asks a lot from the reader because you have to plow through a lot of words and page after page until you become aware of the reversal. You become very interested in the narrator's life story, the vast cast of characters continues to increase with every page but they seem more human and not so irritating, the writing style becomes familiar and essential to the story as the narrator's personality and a reflection of the richness of the setting. This is a long book full of a long life story and many small stories. The small stories are some of the most memorable, particularly during the time of occupation. Some of the little stores are entertaining, like the two pigs and some are tragic, like the story of the young prisoner. I found myself more caught up in the little stories than in the larger tragedy of Raymond and Horace. My recommendation is to skip the introduction by John Fowles which is long and unnecessary and save your endurance to see if you can get far enough into the book to reach the point where you stop having to work at reading and want to pick it up. It is brilliant, even as it is astounding that a publisher read enough of it to make the decision to publish it.
One of my favorite books.......2006-04-25
I keep rereading this book. I've probably read it 20 times, in full and in part, since encountering it 20 years ago. The pageant of characters who march through are so alive I feel like I know them, and the number and variety of experiences the protagonist relates are as rich as life itself, despite the fact that Ebenezer left his home island of Guernsey only once, as a young man, for a short period of time.
However, I have lent or given a copy of this book to at least a half dozen people over the years, and not one of them was able to finish it.
Also, I do suspect that John Fowles wrote the book and perpetrated a grand hoax. I doubt that G. B. Edwards ever existed, at least as the author of this wonderful volume.
A contrary opinion.......2006-03-02
My inability to leap on this bandwagon of fireworks distresses me. But, in all good faith, I cannot.
After plodding through almost 70 pages of this novel, I have ground to a halt. I simply cannot take it anymore. There has been only one book of G.B. Edwards published. There is a reason for this: He plods. Yes, he does.
It was rejected for publication numerous times, and why was that? Right. He plods.
Maybe it livened up after the 70th page. I hope so, but I lacked the spirit to carry on. There are other books, better books, awaiting.
If you are interested in an old man's memories of Guernsey island life, an old man who speaks as if he never finished high school, well, perhaps this will captivate you. It did not captivate me. After 70 pages, I said to myself: So what? Do I care? The answer was a resounding no.
Another reviewer noted that it was slow going at first. But 70 pages? We should have been up to speed by 70 pages. But we were still idling.
A Dense Masterpiece.......2005-12-04
In his forward, John Fowles praised Edwards' writing style as "dense." Reading the first several chapters, the style put me off. It seemed less dense than outright clumsy. Only Fowles' seal of approval and a friend's praise of the book kept me plugging along. I am thankful that I continued. The short chapters work as battering rams aimed straight to the heart. By the end, all of my defenses were shattered and I loved that stubborn old man. His commitment to the life force, expressed so simply in his search for an heir, is transmitted like a blood transfusion to the reader.
Ebenezer Le Page - The Ghost of Guernsey Past.......2005-11-19
This is a wonderful book for all the reasons other reviewers have mentioned, and it dashed well SHOULD be included in college literary courses, as one reviewer has suggested, as an example of how to develop an impeccable authorial voice.
Le Page does have a few curmudgeonly traits in common with his Dickensian literary namesake, but miserliness is not one of them, as we learn in the end. Beneath the seeming simplicity of the man is all the philosophical depth one could wish for, not couched in the usual abstract jargon, but rather woven seamlessly into the story. For instance: "He (Raymond) was one of those who ought never to have been born; but, at that rate, I wonder how many of us ought to have been born?" p.30---As good a speculation on Gnosticism as you will find anywhere in scholarly tomes.
But, ultimately, it's his essential humanity and humour that win us over, as when a woman with a wooden leg is after him (for amorous purposes):"...by God, she got along quicker and looked forty times more determined on her wooden leg, than any other woman with two legs of flesh and blood! I looked through my old book of Army Instructions for the drill on how to take cover in the presence of the enemy." p.234
Take cover from the vapidity of modern "literature" by reading this gem of a book.

A testament of hope and of freedom of the human spirit.......2007-07-23
In this classic, in the tradition of The Gulag Archipelago: 1918-1956, Prisoner of Zion, Natan Sharansky, one of the greatest Jewish heroes of our time, tells of his nine years in Soviet prisons and gulags, because of his desire to live in the ancient homeland of the Jewish people.
Sharansky was first denied an exit visa to Israel in 1973. Seperated from his wife, Avital, a day after thewir marriage, in 1974, Sharansky fought for the rights of Jews in the Soviet Union as well as the rights of other persecuted minorities such as Pentecostals, Catholics, Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars and ethnic Germans, which disproves the repulsive charge by anti-Semites that Zionists only care about their own people.
He worked as a translator for Soviet dissident and human rights champion Andrei Sakharov, and his spokesman.
Sakharov never stopped fighting for Sharanky's freedom, for human rights and for the Jews of the Soviet Empire.
Sharanky describes his life in the preface as a Jews growing up in Russia, and his mental liberation from Soviet thought slavery, by his discovery of his Judaism and Zionism. He then details his 1977 arrest, and his nine years of brutal incarceration.
He never bowed to his captors and refused to have anything to do with the perfidious KGB.
A variety of mental and physical tortures were used to try to break Sharansky, but he never flinched.
Always given courage by the word of the G-D of Israel, and particularly guided by Psalm 23:
"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil
For though art with me..."
Indeed he did not fear the evil of the Soviet tyranny.
His wife Avital tirelessly fought for his release as his cause became known in the free world, and fought for by all freedom-loving people.
The book ends with Sharansky's release in 1986 and his aliyah to Israel, where he was reunited with his wife.
The book is a testament to the evils of a one party tyranny.
It is a testament to the eternal endurability of the Jewish people, and their unbreakable bond wit the Land of Israel.
Unltimately it is a testament of hope and of freedom of the human spirit.
Today the same Communist ideology that persecuted Sharansky is waging a jihad of intellectual terrorism against Israel and her people.
But the courage of people like Sharansky and the people of Israel has shown that Israel can and will prevail.
A must read for any mature adult.......2007-02-08
Natan is a hero to the human race. He is wise beyond his years and his wife really proved what true love is. No wonder our Oresident sticks to his convictions. We should all be like Natan
David vs. Goliath.......2005-08-28
"[Saul] put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on [David's]head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around... "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul, "because I am not used to them." Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached [Goliath]".
So begins the story of the famous battle between the future King David of Israel and the giant Phillistine during Biblical times. In Natan Shcharansky's "Fear No Evil" (the title taken from one of David's own psalms), the author is less equipped even than young David in battling the ubiquitous and evil KGB, which maintains an illegal presence in the prisons he's held in (again, illegally), accused of spying for western countries. But because of decisions he makes early in his arrest, he is the victor in the struggle waged over his soul by men who would like him to acknowledge he is wrong, who would like him to implicate others in his "crimes" in order for favors from them, or who would simply like him to stop being the delightful fly in the prison ointment he is.
Shcharansky's only weapons during his trial and during his following prison term, consist of his personal integrity, which remains unsullied; his faith and trust in his family and friends; and a tiny book of psalms that he will spare nothing in reminding prison officials he is entitled to. He sometimes has to wage a hunger strike for these things, but always wins. It is true that his wife, who managed to reach Jerusalem before Shcharansky's arrest, is on a worldwide campaign for his release, resulting in no less than two sitting US presidents mentioning him by name in speeches heard by Soviet officials as a political prisoner, as well as global support, but Shcharansky does not learn this until later, and so believes he is virtually alone in the fight.
This gritty autobiography is a lovely example of human survival, and how one can keep his humanity in a horrific place. Shcharansky's relationships with his fellow "zeks" (prisoners) is especially touching, and we're able to get a glimpse of how even the guards in the system have surrendered their souls in this "police state".
A great read for anyone questioning how to survive while it seems suffering and injustice are towering overhead. Very inspiring.
A poignant if dry memoir.......2005-04-21
Having met Sharansky in Israel (Birthright alumni!), and having had a long time interest in the Soviet Jewry dissident movement - which allowed my own (Jewish) family to emigrate from the Soviet Union in '91 - I had little doubt as to the outcome of Sharansky's imprisonment. As someone who has read a number of books on similar subjects - in particular the Alexander Solzenytsin "Archipelag Gulag" series - I was a bit dissapointed with "Fear no Evil". (Nevermind that Solzenytsin is widely believed to be an anti-semite; I'm speaking of the literary aspect only.)
In contrast to Solzenytsin's breathtakingly vivid literary style and powerful analysis of the core of the Soviet regime and it's criminal code, Sharansky's book read rather like an eagle's eye view of a convoluted social and political order. "Fear no Evil" reads instead like a game of mental swordsmanship, with a self-inflicted narrow focus quite removed from breadth and depth of a much needed analysis on the Soviet system as a whole.
However, Sharansky does not proclaim himself to be a literary guru. This book is a poignant (if dry) portrayal of one man's fight for freedom - both for himself and 2 million of his people. The uncompromising stance taken by the author with the Soviet regime throughout his imprisonment - his life, family and future hanging in the balance - is awe-inspiring in its simplicity and effectiveness.
It has become a cliche in our time that "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". Yet the Sharanskys of the world have proven that one need not be a terrorist to be a freedom fighter. Where are such men today?
Highly Insightful and Enjoyable.......2005-03-22
Natan Sharansky's book "Fear No Evil" is a readable account of his time in the Soviet gulag for his dissident activities. The book is detailed and inspirational. Sharansky's courage in facing the KGB is a lesson that we can all learn from.
The book itself reads fast, thanks to Sharansky's ability to make the read interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain insight in what life was like for a political prisioner in the USSR; to anyone who wishes to be inspired by ones courage, or to anyone who wishes to just sit down and read a thoroughly enjoyable book.

Add one more in the list of "FDR Knew!" books ..........2006-06-16
Clearly an interesting text and well worthwhile the time for any one keen on Pearl Harbor lore. While the writing shows the need for some more editing, overall, an excellent addition to those many Pearl Harbor bookshelfs out there.
A "firsthand" account of two survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack provides some topical perspectives not brought to the fore previously. While much of what is related is "old news" for many, there are some new tidbits. Of course, the text does, yet again, highlight that many known documents and other WWII materials are still classified even today.
The revelation of the "tapping" of the Churchill-Roosevelt trans-oceanic telephone conversations is one such new item for some, as apparently this was not very well-known to some Pearl Harbor buffs. This is based on the release, by the United States in the mid-1990s, of some of the transcripts the German "wire-tapping" which indeed supports the "We knew." sentence which is how Stinnett's ends his highly-regarded earlier "Day of Deceit".
There are several other things of importance in this text, but two in particular are notable and even not mentioned: (a) these conversations and other correspondence began before Churchill became Prime Minister; these relate directly to Tyler Kent's imprisonment in Britain. And (b) all of Churchill's conversations were transcribed (yes, copies were made and are extant today; and very importantly they are not subject to any of the UK-USA crypto agreements); all of those Churchill-Roosevelt transcripts remain classified, but perhaps not much longer.
As "reader" from earlier seems unclear, or ignorant of well-known facts, a primer here may help:
As to the vulnerability of the A-3 scrambler; a scan of Marshall's Joint Congressional testimony will show that he ordered "induction" testing to be done by the US Army Signal Corps (HQ: Fort Monmouth, NJ). This was done off Gardiners Island (eastern end of Long Island, NY). The A-3 relied on random voltage inverters ... not very complex and not very hard to deal with. Now, the later SIGSALY was an altogether different beast ... synch those 78 rpm LPs.
As to the German capabilites, consider just two examples: (a) See Kahn's "The Codebreakers" (1967 - yes, a text from now almost 40 years ago, and well prior to Prange's publications), Chapter 16 "Censors, Scramblers, and Spies" on page 557 is shown a "Transcript of a German descrambling of an intercepted Churchill transatlanitc conversation." and (b) See Irving's (2001) "Churchill's War" Volume Two "Triumph in Adversity" Appendix II "Telephone Jobs" beginning on page 841 - " ... this 'Forschungsstelle'(research unit) at Wetterlin was capable of intercepting both ends of the transatlantic radiotelephone traffic. They were scrambled, but the scrambling technique employed was one originally devised by Siemens, a German firm; the Nazi readily created a device for unscrambling the conversations. ..." Many of the Wetterlin Transcripts remain to be reviewed by historians.
Finally, as some might know, Truman (via an Executive Order signed on September 28, 1945) had sealed in perpetuity certain "conversations." For those interested - RG 216 (Record Group 216) at the National Archives is a good place to start. The PRIME-POTUS telephone conversations ...
Who knew?
Searching for Scapegoats.......2005-03-10
Authors Landis and Gunn were on Oahu on 7 December 1941 and were thus witnesses to the Japanese attack, Landis at the Pearl Harbor Sub Base as a junior member of Admiral Kimmel's staff and Gunn at the Signal Corps Radar Filter Center at Fort Shafter. Unfortunately, their small roles in these events do not provide them any special insights and these shortcomings are all too obvious in this book. Lt. Cmdr. Landis uses two events as the centerpieces of his thesis that President Roosevelt knew the exact details of the Japanese attack and chose to ignore them so that America could use the attack as our excuse to enter the war-he goes on to suggest it was really Hitler and Germany that Roosevelt wanted to defeat, and he used Japan's attack to bring Germany into the war because of their treaty obligation to Japan. He cites "the President's" direction that three picket vessels be prepared and sailed to the Far East in hopes the Japanese will sink them as one example of Roosevelt's determination to precipitate congressional outrage and a declaration of war. Only one of these vessels actually sailed and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor negated this supposed ploy. The other example of Roosevelt's alleged conspiracy is a "transcript," supposedly taken from German espionage files after the war, of a 26 November 1941 scrambler phone conservation between Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill in which Churchill relates exact details of the December 7 attack. Neither of these two supposed acts of complicity and deceit are supported by citations or research in a manner that even remotely validates their authenticity. In fact, the Japanese decision to attack and the exact date were not decided until 1 December 1941. Virtually everything that follows is ground already plowed many times. While Landis cites several books about the attack and rehashes the theory that Roosevelt allowed over 2,000 American to die rather that meet the attack he knew was coming, his research is virtually nonexistent. From the very outset author Landis makes clear he is fatally biased; he can find absolutely no fault with Admirals Nimitz or Kimmel, and can find nothing good in Admiral King or Generals MacArthur or Marshall. He asserts that, despite a number of Congressional and military investigations over the past 50 years, a clever and massive conspiracy led by "The Democratic Party" and facilitated by King, Marshall, MacArthur and literally thousands of others, has covered for Roosevelt's duplicity. The text suffers significantly from poor editing, with grammatical, format and contextual errors detracting from both credibility and readability. While there is some interesting anecdotal reading here, the total lack of scholarship and definitive research, coupled with the many editorial lapses, completely cancels any objectivity the book might otherwise have contained. This book cannot be taken seriously by those interested in the Pearl Harbor attack.
Definitive evidence of FDR/Churchill foreknowledge.......2004-10-29
1996 marked the 50th Anniversary of the end of WWII and also marked the date that most WWII era documents became declassified. Among those that remain classified are the American and British official documents. However, when they declassified all German documents in 1996, the US Government inadvertently released proof that FDR and Churchill knew about and discussed the attack on Pearl Harbor on November 26, 1941.
Churchill and Roosevely, against the advice of their security staffs, liked to use a telephone scrambler to talk and often they discussed highly classified material. The Germans had a listening station in line with the Washington-London radio-telephone line in Denmark and had installed an A-3 scrambler so they could eavesdrop on the routine conversations done over this line.
In the early morning hours of November 26, 1941 Churchill called Roosevelt with urgent information about the Japanese intentions in the Pacific. Churchill said that they had a high level source that informed them the Japanese intended to attack the US. FDR said he knew about the fleet headed south to the Philippine Islands. But Churchill interrupted him and said, no it was headed for Pearl.
After discussing the trustworthiness of this information, and Churchill assuring FDR that it came from the same individual who helped them with the naval codes, they then discussed how much damage could be inflicted and what to do. Churchill suggested they "do nothing" and if it came to light that they knew, they could always claim to have "misinterpreted intelligence". They even discussed the day of the impending attack, December 8, 1941, which they puzzled over, it being a Monday. Of course, their intelligence people would have instantly known that the Japanese were using their own date/time system, not that of the locality of their attack and in Japan the attack did occur on December 8.
Anyways, buy the book and read the entire transcript of the conversation for yourself. And while this is only one source, remember that the official sources remain classified, indicating that they contain information that has not yet been divulged. And the only reason to retain classification over this information is that it contains information the government is ashamed of.
Here we go again.......2002-10-22
Well-written and an easy read.........
But just another book attempting to prove what others have tried to do before....show that the nations leaders knew about the Pearl Harbor attack and just let it happen so the US was forced to join WWII. Anyone well read on the subject will see that without a list of sources with footnotes all of the "facts" given here can't easily be traced to their source. So you have to believe what you read. I've seen all this info before elsewhere.
Ain't history great...you can write whatever you want if everyone you drag down with your "proof" is dead and gone.....well thats show-biz.
Most would agree that Kimmel and Short, especially Kimmel, got a raw deal by taking the brunt of the blame for the attack, when the leaders in Washington should have shouldered as much or more of the blame. But why can't people just accept that the Japanese completely fooled everyone and carried out a bold and successful attack??
But I guess that won't sell many books.
We finally know the background of the attack on Pearl Harbor.......2002-05-16
Ken Landis, being the lone survivor of Adm. Kimmel's staff is in a position to know what Kimmel knew and what Kimmel did not know. Ken was Kimmel's communication officer and encoded/decoded all messages to Kimmel. More than that, extensive research by Landis has recently revealed some incredible facts about what Roosevelt and Churchill knew well ahead of the attack.
This book goes beyond Pearl Harbor and delves into Naval Intelligence and how various Admirals did and did not respond to this information. Battles were won or lost on intelligence.
This book is a powerful piece of history and a must read for anyone interested in World War II and the Pacific Theater of Operations.
Book Description
Sex, privilege, corruption, and revenge--these are elements that we expect to find splashed across today's tabloid headlines. But in 17th century England, a sex scandal in which the 2nd Earl of Castlehaven was executed for crimes so horrible that "a Christian man ought scarce to name them" threatened the very foundations of aristocratic hierarchy. In A House in Gross Disorder, Cynthia Herrup presents a strikingly new interpretation both of the case itself and of the sexual and social anxieties it cast into such bold relief. Castlehaven was convicted of abetting the rape of his wife and of committing sodomy with his servants. More than that, he stood accused of inverting the natural order of his household by reveling in rather than restraining the intemperate passions of those he was expected to rule and protect. Herrup argues that because an orderly house was considered both an example and endorsement of aristocratic governance, the riotousness presided over by Castlehaven was the most damning evidence against him. Castlehaven himself argued that he was the victim of an impatient son, an unhappy wife, and courtiers greedy for his lands. Eschewing simple conclusions about guilt or innocence, Herrup focuses instead on the fascinating legal, social and political dynamics of the case and its subsequent retellings. In prose as riveting as the moral and legal dramas it depicts, A House in Gross Disorder reconsiders a scandal that still speaks to contemporary anxieties about sex, good governance, and the role of law in regulating both.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2005-11-22
A nice and satisfying read. Herrup combined a truly impressive amount of primary sources, scattered over 10 different archives and libraries. Instead of drowning in the source material and the vast body of secondary literature, she offers a nice, crisp and concise 150+ page analysis.
All the raunchy details of the Castlehaven case are there, but the supposed escapades of the Second Earl of Castlehaven are not the prime focus of this book. Through the relatively restricted prism of a scandalous lawsuit, Herrup achieves in painting a surprisingly broad and kaleidoscopical image of civil society in the mid-17th-century Britain. She skillfully treat themes such as the relations between men and wives, the official and actual perceptions of catholics and Irish, the delicate position of King Charles I and the strife at the royal court between old nobility and the recently ennobled.
Herrup carefully avoids any references to the marquis De Sade. It's easy to see why. Inclusion of De Sade would probably have broadened the scope of the book too much: times, country and circumstances were so much different. But still, it's seducing to compare the two. Sade was given a death sentence in 1772, just as Castlehaven 141 years earlier. Both men did not repent, both their wives were of questionable reputation. And the accusations against Earl Mervin could have directly inspired parts of Sade's Philosophy In The Boudoir.
Great story, well-told.......2001-01-31
I loved this book. The story is unbelievable, and Cynthia Herrup does a great job of explaining all its ins-and-outs (no pun intended). If you want a novel, this ain't it. But if you want a great history book, this is for you. Me? I'm giving it to all my friends . . . and maybe my mom too!
A fascinating story made deadly dull.......2000-11-20
The story of the Earl of Castlehaven is almost too amazing to be believed--not only for the actions of the Earl himself, but also for his trial and what *it* said about English society of the time. In addition, the light that the trial sheds on that time's notions of sexuality, "family," and politics is astounding. But somehow, someway, Cynthia Herrup manages to make it all deadly dull. Reading the book was an exercise in tedium--Herrup's prose is strictly academic and she's given to long paragraphs in which she says precisely nothing.
There are many fascinating books on the subject of sexuality, politics, and family during this period of English history. This isn't one of them.

Book Description
This book addresses the problems of dealing with the biology, economics, and public policy of conserving and managing Pacific salmon. Heightening the concern has been the recent dwindling of the salmon that once teemed in coastal waters.
