A must-have book for those who love central Colorado.......1998-01-06
Garden of the Gods: A Photographic Masterpiece of the Garden of the Gods Park and Pikes Peak by Rich Buzzelli is currently in print and is available in book and gift stores throughout Colorado Springs. Rich Buzzelli was in love with the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. He dedicated his life to photographing the beautiful rock formations and mountains of central Colorado. He specialized in capturing the flow of color and texture of nature's activities, specifically the interplay between the sky, the clouds, the trees. and the rocks. Buzzelli was one of the few artists who have paid the ultimate price for his craft. He was killed by lighting while photographing the scenery of Pikes Peak. All those who share Buzzelli's appreciation for the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak would be fascinated by this special photo collection.

Customer Reviews:
Could be better, could be worse.......2003-09-13
"Tokyo, Kyoto and Ancient Nara" is not a bad guidebook overall, but not great. It focuses on the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara rather than the precectures, which is like buying a guidebook to Oklahoma and finding that it only covers Oklahomo City, ignoring the rest of the state.
This book achieves a nice balance between history lesson and guiding, which is necessary for a Japanese guidebook as you may not understand what you are seeing wihout some background. Maybe the first 100 pages are history/culture/etiquette type of thing. Anyone with a limited background in Japan would do well to read this section before making their trip.
The citie guides come in a little thin, but better than a general "Japan" guidebook, with maybe about 80 pages for Tokyo, 60 for Kyoto and 30 for "ancient" Nara, which befits the size of the three cities. There is a token 5 pages for Osaka, which is unhelpful as anyone coming to Nara and Kyoto are likely to visit Osaka as well, as it is close. It is enough information for a day or so in each city, and covers what you need for the major destinations and sights.
Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara are all must-sees on any travel itenary to Japan, so having them all in one book is convenient. Whereas Kyoto and Nare are close together in the Kansai region, Tokyo is relatively far away. If you have the money for it, however, the bullet train makes all distances irrelevant.
The book is lacking of photographs of any sort, which makes the Eyewitness guides superior. Also missing is suggested day trips or walking tours. Which help to make for a great guidebook. The book is a nice size, however, and easily portable.
useful but Eyewitness guides are better.......2000-11-11
This is a good book but if you want to get a feel for a place before visiting, photographs are essential. The Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Guide to Japan has photos; this one doesn't. So the Eyewitness guide ended up being the one that we carried about with us.
Book Description
Thirteen-year-old Maggie Pugh has lived in Kinship, Georgia, all her life.
In all that time almost nothing has changed. If you are poor, you live on the
west side of town. If you are rich, you live on the hill in the north end and
get to go boating at the country club in Troy. If you are white you use one
bathroom at Byer's Drugs and if you are colored you use another.
All that starts to change in the summer of 1960. It is the summer when Maggie's
younger sister, Gardenia, triumphs in the Hayes County Little Miss Contest. It
is the summer when Maggie must decide whether or not to tell anyone about the
horrible thing she saw. Most of all it's the summer of Maggie's first camera, a
tool that becomes a way for her to find independence and a different kind of
truth.
Customer Reviews:
Teenager's Life and World Change.......2007-02-10
Maggie Pugh lives in a small town in Georgia. In the year 1960 she is thirteen years old. Her family is very poor, living in the bad section of town, far away from the rich folks in the section of town where they have huge houses and a club for boating. But, her mother always says, at least they are white and living in a white section of town.
This summer some of the black people living in town start to assert themselves. They begin to challenge the laws that keep them separate from the white people. They go into the bathroom marked "white" at the local drugstore, rather than the one marked "colored." They ask to be served at the lunch counter, rather than having to pay and take their food elsewhere. Things are changing all around Maggie.
Maggie begins this summer to look more closely at her own life. Her mother is abusive toward her but adores her seven-year-old sister Gardenia--a little girl so perfect and delicate she wins beauty pageants. Their father is out of work. Their next-door neighbors are cruel, and one of them specifically terrorizes Maggie.
Maggie ends up getting a job what will change her whole way of thinking. She begins cleaning the house of a mysterious man, whom she doesn't see but who leaves her notes telling her the work she has done is splendid. But the first rule of the job is that Maggie is not to ask any questions. Why is this man so secretive?
This book contains some great characters. Maggie is strong and insightful, Zeke is a quiet presence, George Hardy is intelligent and brings out confidence and reflective thinking in Maggie. Even the villains in the story--Virgil and Maggie's mother--really come to life and add to the story. This story, more than others, gave me a good picture of what the civil rights fight was really like in small towns in the South, on a day-to-day, personal level. It made the conflict much more vivid for me.
Spite Fences.......2006-11-27
Spite Fences by Trudy Krisher
"Trip it. Advance the film. Steady your hand, Maggie. Snap. Snap. Click" (Krisher 273). Looking through the lens that is her life, Maggie Pugh keeps her secrets held in the undeveloped film of her mind. Thirteen years old, and she has already seen the horrors of the civil rights movement. Spite Fences, is Maggie's struggle with keeping secrets.
As a poor white child living on the North side of the railroad tracks in Kinship, Georgia, Maggie Pugh has to work for all she has, and to protect herself from the danger that is her momma. Zeke, Maggie's African American friend, finds a job for Maggie, which involves even more secrets. Because the Pugh family is desperate for money, Maggie takes the job for a colored man. The job entails not only cleaning, and delivering, but "What makes it special, Maggie," [Zeke] said, looking around again before he went on- "what makes it special," he said, "is that the job requires you to keep secrets" (Krisher 23). Throughout the novel, Maggie find more and more secrets and her mind is overflowing with undeveloped photographs that erupt when Maggie finally can't take the treatment of the colored folks in her town.
During the huge civil rights movement that comes through town, Maggie is struggling with not only keeping the secrets of the coloreds, but the secrets of her family. Isabella Pugh, Maggie's mother, is not the kindest of mothers. Beating her eldest daughter because the neighbor tore apart her younger sister's doll, or because her daughter didn't get the laundry to the right house on time because she was raped, isn't what a mother should do, but that's exactly what Isabella Pugh did. Maggie has kept all the horrible pictures in her mind, but with all of her other secrets coming out, Maggie can't keep even more. When Maggie's secrets come out, the entire town of Kinship, Georgia notices, and to most, not in a good way.
This realistic fiction novel had a sluggish beginning but once the story gets past the basic plot, the story picks up so you don't want to put the book down. I would recommend this novel for those who don't mind a slow moving beginning. It is a medium read for middle school students and an easy read for high school students.
Maggie's undeveloped film eventually, but you have to read to find out how. The camera is a powerful thing, but pictures can destroy.
She Knows She Can, Be What She Wants To Be.......2003-05-29
This book takes place in a southern city where people are very segragated. Life is everything but easy for 13-year-old Maggie Pugh. Her neighbors, the Boggs' are disgusting people who only care about themselves. Maggie's parents dont help either, her mother beats her. Maggie trys to get a job to help out her family and one day, she runs into her neighbor, Virgil Boggs. She has had bad experiences with him before but this time was by far the worst! He does something terrible to her but to find out you have to read the book. This book isn't the best but if you are looking for a fun but serious book to read this is it!

Spite Fences.......2002-03-22
I had to read Spite Fences for school, and although the beginning was a bit slow, the pace quickly picked up and made me want to read more. Spite Fences is about a girl named Maggie who deals with many struggles of life in the 1960's. She deals with racism, unfair treatment from her parents and rude neighbors. I would definately recommend this book.
THIS BOOK IS A MASTRPIECE!!!! ( REALLY!).......2001-10-28
OK, well first of all I want to recommend this book to absolutely everyone! I mean that. This is one of the best books every written. Presonally, I loved it. I'm not going to tell you what it's about, I will leave that for you to find out. So, read the book and thank me that I recom, ended it to you. ( lol)
Well, I best be going. Engoy the book, tell me if you liked it.

Book Description
Recent advances in understanding the biological role of singlet oxygen in the pathways of cellular responses to ultraviolet-A radiation: its key position in photodynamical effects, and its generation by photochemical (dark) reactions, e.g. by cells of the immune system such as eosinophils and macrophages, are the focus of this volume. The new methods and techniques responsible for the rapid progress in this area are presented.
The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years,
Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Since 1955, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now with more than 300 volumes (all of them still in print), the series contains much material still relevant today--truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of life sciences.

Description:
Here we report a rather simple and convenient chemiluminescence (CL) method for the determination of tetracycline (TC). It is based on the observation that tetracycline can greatly enhance an ultra-weak CL between H"2O"2 and acetonitrile in a basic alkaline solution. Light emission is intense and long-lived, and even with a simple set-up, a high sensitivity could be achieved. The linear range was 5@mM-200nM with a detection limit of 60nM. Singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical are suggested to be involved in this new reaction, and the CL emitter is classified as the oxidized tetracycline, not tetracycline itself. As a preliminary application, this simple method has been successfully applied into the determination of tetracycline in the drugs.

Description:
Singlet oxygen was generated by reaction of sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide in a micro-channel. The two reagent solutions were delivered into the micro-channel by syringe pumps, providing a laminar flow. Such a laminar flow forms a liquid-liquid interface instantly in a micro-channel, and then the interface collapses gradually through molecular diffusion with the residence times. The chemiluminescence from the singlet oxygen was emitted in the course of the collapse of the interface under laminar flow condition. The chemiluminescence intensity was observed continuously and stably in the micro-channel as long as the reagents were fed into the channel. We examined the features of the chemiluminescence emitted in the micro-channel by changing the flow rates of reagents and the detection points in the micro-channel. The data obtained were considered along with the residence times and diffusion lengths. We also examined the effects of antioxidants, such as sodium azide, histidine, nitroblue tetrazolium, and 2-propanol on the chemiluminescence intensity.

Description:
The present work studies the visible-light-promoted photodegradation of the colorless fungicide carbendazim (methyl 2-benzimidazolecarbamate) and several 2-substituted benzimidazoles (SBZ's), in water or water-methanol solution, in the presence of air and, as a photosensitizer, the synthetic xanthene dye Rose Bengal (RB) or the natural pigment riboflavin (Rf). The results indicate that the degradation of each particular SBZ depends on its chemical structure and on the sensitizer employed. In the presence of RB, the degradation always operates via a singlet molecular oxygen (O"2(^1@D"g))-mediated mechanism, through a highly efficient process, as deduced from the comparison of the rate constants for physical and chemical quenching of O"2(^1@D"g). In the presence of Rf, the visible-light irradiation of any of the studied SBZ's produces a series of competitive processes that depend on the relative concentrations of Rf and SBZ. These processes include the quenching of excited singlet and triplet Rf states by the SBZ and the generation of both O"2(^1@D"g) and superoxide radical anion (O"2^?^-), the latter generated by electron transfer from excited Rf species to the dissolved oxygen. The overall result is the photodegradation of the SBZ and the photoprotection of the sensitizer.

Description:
A simple flow injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) method was proposed for the determination of nitrofurazone. Strong CL signal was generated during the reaction of nitrofurazone with H"2O"2 and N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) in alkaline condition. The CL signal was proportional to the nitrofurazone concentration in the range 1.0x10^-^7 to 1.0x10^-^5gmL^-^1. The detection limit was 2x10^-^8gmL^-^1 nitrofurazone and the relative standard deviation was less than 4% (6.0x10^-^6gmL^-^1 nitrofurazone, n=11). The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of nitrofurazone in compound furacillin nasal drops, human plasma and urine samples. The CL reaction mechanism was also discussed briefly. Singlet oxygen generated in the reaction between H"2O"2 and NBS was suggested to be participated in the CL reaction.

Description:
Ozone has been shown to induce lung tumors in mice. The reactivity of ozone with DNA in an aqueous solution was investigated by a DNA sequencing technique using ^3^2P-labeled DNA fragments. Ozone induced cleavages in the deoxyribose-phosphate backbone of double-stranded DNA, which were reduced by hydroxyl radical scavengers, suggesting the participation of hydroxyl radicals in the cleavages. The ozone-induced DNA cleavages were enhanced with piperidine treatment, which induces cleavages at sites of base modification, but the inhibitory effect of hydroxyl radical scavengers on the piperidine-induced cleavages was limited. Main piperidine-labile sites were guanine and thymine residues. Cleavages at some guanine and thymine residues after piperidine treatment became more predominant with denatured single-stranded DNA. Exposure of calf thymus DNA to ozone resulted in a dose-dependent increase of the 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine formation, which was partially inhibited by hydroxyl radical scavengers. ESR studies using 5,5-dimethylpyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) showed that aqueous ozone produced the hydroxyl radical adduct of DMPO. In addition, the fluorescein-dependent chemiluminescence was detected during the decomposition of ozone in a buffer solution and the enhancing effect of D"2O was observed, suggesting the formation of singlet oxygen. However, no or little enhancing effect of D"2O on the ozone-induced DNA damage was observed. These results suggest that DNA backbone cleavages were caused by ozone via the production of hydroxyl radicals, while DNA base modifications were mainly caused by ozone itself and the participation of hydroxyl radicals and/or singlet oxygen in base modifications is small, if any. A possible link of ozone-induced DNA damage to inflammation-associated carcinogenesis as well as air pollution-related carcinogenesis is discussed.
Book Description
The DIVAN-I HAFIZ is a complete verbatim translation of all of Hafez's ghazals, rubaiyats, qita'at, masnavi, the saqinameh, the moghaninameh, qasaid, and mokhamas. It includes a biography of the poet, description of other translations, index of the personages in the poems, index of the figures of speech used, and copious notes on practically every line in the poems based on Sudi's well known Turkish commentary. This new edition includes a new introduction by Michael C. Hillmann, a Hafez scholar, which surveys: other English translations, Wilberforce-Clarke's translation, the life of Hafez and the historical and literary characteristics of the ghazal. Also added to this new edition is a table which gives the correspondence between the numbers given to the poems in Clarke's translation and the recent Persian language editions of the divan of Khanlari and of Ghazvini and Ghani. Also added to this new edition is a table matching the English translations with the original Persian in the editions Ghazvini and Ghani and of Khanlari. Clarke's word for word translation and its copious notes explaining almost everything make it very suitable for the English speaking student of Hafez who is attempting to learn the Persian.
The DIVAN-I HAFIZ has been used extensively by later translators of Hafez.
The collection includes 693 translations.
Customer Reviews:
A True Guide to the Language of Hafiz.......2000-12-16
For anyone interested in understanding the depth of the poetry of Hafiz, Clarke's translations are a must. His comprehensive knowledge of Sufism and the hidden meanings in Hafiz' poetry is superior to any renderings that have come before these translations or after. Well worth reading whether for pleasure or research.
