Book Description
Mathematical ecology is a subject which recently attracts attentions of many mathematicians and biologists. One of the most important and fundamental mathematical models in ecology is of Lotka-Volterra type. This book gives global dynamical properties of L-V systems. The properties analyzed are global stability of the equilibria, persistence or permanence of the systems (which ensures the survival of all the biological-species composed of the systems for the long term) and the existence of periodic or chaotic solutions. The special subject of this book is to consider the effects of the systems structure, diffusion of the biological species and time delay on the global dynamical properties of the systems.
Customer Reviews:
A nice approach in Lotka_volterra systems!.......2006-11-09
This book deals with a specific and interesting subject of adequate form. It is not an introductory book in analysis of Lotka-Volterra systems, but also it is not necessary very deep knowledge to follow its reading. The reading is pleasant and induces the reader to develop its proper reasoning. Recommendable for interested reserchers for this subject.

Book Description
First introduced in Shelia P. Moses' award-winning The Legend of Buddy Bush, Pattie Mae Sheals continues her journey in The Return of Buddy Bush. Pattie Mae goes to Harlem to visit her sister after the death of their beloved grandfather and the disappearance of Uncle Buddy, who has been wrongly accused of a terrible crime. Harlem could not be more different from Rich Square, North Carolina-people speak differently, people dress differently, and black men and women work and run their own businesses, just like any white man would do. Harlem is magical to Pattie Mae, and a chance meeting with the black writer Richard Wright fully opens her eyes to the fact that anything is possible in her future.
Pattie Mae is not only determined to soak up the Northern lifestyle, but she is on a secret mission to find her uncle. The rumors are that he is hiding out in Harlem, so Pattie Mae wants to bring him back. In her innocence she believes that once Uncle Buddy returns, he can have a fair trial and prove once and for all that he did nothing wrong.
What Pattie Mae learns about life and opportunity, and what Uncle Buddy learns about family and justice, are at the heart of this rich and unforgettable novel.

An Authentic Voice for Older Adolescents and Adults.......2007-03-29
In this sequel to "The Legend of Buddy Bush," the Coretta Scott King Award winner and National Book Award finalist, young Pattie Mae goes to Harlem to visit her sister and look for her uncle Buddy. Wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Buddy narrowly escaped a lynching in 1947. Now, Pattie Mae wants him to come home and vindicate himself.
An authentic, fictional voice about historical events, for older adolescents and adults.
Like "The Legend of Buddy Bush" this book is wonderful........2006-06-12
I read "The Legend of Buddy Bush" and I was happy when the sequel was released.
This book is equally a great book for people of all ages.
I can not wait for a third sequel.
My buddy and me.......2006-01-17
Sometimes sequels to children's books are obvious. You reach the end of the story and it is clear as crystal that the author only wrote the first book with the clear intention of making a sequel (or series) should the demand arise. Then there are books like, "The Return of Buddy Bush". If you read Sheila P. Moses's first novel for the kiddies, "The Legend of Buddy Bush" then you are familiar with her work. "The Legend" was a lovely little article containing three-dimensional characters, a narrator with more personality than half the people living in America today, and a story that gave the entire genre of historical fiction a jolt in the arm. It was not, however, an obvious candidate for a sequel. By the end of the tale this reader (and obviously I do not speak for others) was left feeling that Moses had said all that was needed to be said. I am alone in this thought, though, since after the publication of "The Legend", Moses was inundated with requests for more information. Says the author herself, "At every turn, strangers questioned me about Buddy Bush and his legend... they asked the big question: Where is Buddy Bush? That is when I realized that my work was not finished". So out of a clear blue sky I was handed a copy of this new book to my complete and utter amazement. And while "The Return of Buddy Bush" doesn't hold a candle to its predecessor, it's still a fairly good read and a better historical note than most stuff assigned to the kiddies in school today.
Not a lot of time has passed since Pattie Mae's Uncle Buddy Bush was wrongfully arrested for the supposed "rape" of a white woman and almost lynched by seven clumsy Klan members. Having escaped to the North, Pattie Mae hasn't seen him since and she's devastated. On top of that, her beloved grandpa is dead and the family is in deep mourning. Soon Pattie Mae and her sister Barjean will be traveling up north so that the girl can see Harlem for the first time. She's thrilled of course, but she has bigger plans than that. She's going to find Uncle Buddy and convince him to come back down to Rich Square, North Carolina to stand trial and (she believes) witnesss the prosecution of the men who tried to lynch him. The only thing is, Pattie Mae has a little too much faith in the justice of her hometown.
In Moses's first book, Pattie Mae comes across as adoring the men in her family and despising the women. Credit the author with consistency then. Pattie Mae's love of Uncle Buddy and her now dead grandfather is stronger than ever and her dislike and distaste with her female relations is thicker still. I had a lot of problems with Pattie Mae in this book. It seems to me that a twelve-year-old girl growing up in North Carolina in the late 40s is going to understand some basic injustices. Pattie Mae is convinced that the men who tried to lynch her uncle will be brought to swift justice and then is shocked SHOCKED when they get off scott free. Huh? Even a girl as sheltered as Pattie Mae should comprehend how unfair life is at that point in time. As a person, Pattie Mae also does some truly foolish and downright dumb things. Her sister leaves her alone in an apartment in Harlem with the strict instructions that she should not leave the home. So Pattie Mae decides to walk around Harlem and find her uncle. And of course EVERYONE she talks to knows him and she locates him in no time at all. Hunhuna? One of the frustrations of the book is that Pattie Mae does exactly as she pleases (sometimes placing herself in danger) and never faces any consequences whatsoever.
The book also drops Pattie Mae's resistance to her uncle leaving again. When they first leave Harlem together she's convinced that she'll find a way to make Buddy stay in Rich Square, North Carolina. By the time Buddy's on his way out, however, she never makes so much as a peep of objection. Is this because she's learned something about the white people of the South? Has she come to some kind of internal understanding? We never know because the subject, so important to Pattie Mae at the beginning of the book, is dropped entirely by the end.
I laud the predecessor, but there was one detail in "The Legend of Buddy Bush" that drove people absolutely bonkers. In the book, Pattie Mae's grandfather acquires a yellow telephone. But of course, yellow telephones weren't exactly sold to the general public back in the 40s. This little detail has led some librarians to refer to the title as "the yellow telephone book". If Ms. Moses ever heard this criticism, I'm not certain, but she does make a big point in the book once more that the telephone was yellow. Kind of a whatchagonnadoboutit response. Otherwise, the book seems fairly faithful to the times. I dunno. I'm no historian myself and there may be all sorts of problems rife in this novel. What I can tell you is that for all my complaints, "The Return of Buddy Bush" is still a righteous read. It's great for reluctant readers and kids who normally don't care two-bits for historical fiction. And for all my objections about what Pattie Mae does and doesn't do, this would be an excellent book club read for any group of 8 to 12 year-olds. There is plenty to talk about in this novel. It may not quite reach the heights of its predecessor, but it still makes an interesting title. Better than most but not the author's best.

Book Description
About 95 per cent of all known animal species are invertebrates. A knowledge of their sexual, reproductive, and developmental biology is essential for the effective management of species that are economically useful to man or are harmful to him, his crops, and livestock. This treatise is the first to cover all aspects of reproduction and development of the entire spectrum of invertebratesterrestrial, marine, freshwater, brackish-water, free-living, and parasitic. The chapters, by leading world experts in their fields, are up-to-date and informative, and suggest a number of problems for future research.

Book Description
Probability has been an important part of mathematics for more than three centuries. Moreover, its importance has grown in recent decades, since the computing power now widely available has allowed probabilistic and stochastic techniques to attack problems such as speech and image processing, geophysical exploration, radar, sonar, etc. -- all of which are covered here.
The book contains three exceptionally clear expositions on wavelets, frames and their applications. A further extremely active current research area, well covered here, is the relation between probability and partial differential equations, including probabilistic representations of solutions to elliptic and parabolic PDEs. New approaches, such as the PDE method for large deviation problems, and stochastic optimal control and filtering theory, are beginning to yield their secrets. Another topic dealt with is the application of probabilistic techniques to mathematical analysis. Finally, there are clear explanations of normal numbers and dynamic systems, and the influence of probability on our daily lives.

Book Description
The dangerous lover has haunted our culture for over two hundred years; English, American, and European literature is permeated with his erotic presence. The Dangerous Lover takes seriously the ubiquity of the brooding romantic heroÂhis dark past, his remorseful and rebellious exile from comfortable everyday living. Deborah Lutz traces the recent history of this figure, through the melancholy iconoclasm of the Romantics, the lost soul redeemed by love of the Brontës, and the tormented individualism of twentieth-century love narratives. Arguing for this characterÂ's central influence not only in literature but also in the history of ideas, this book places the dangerous lover firmly within the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, the Modernism of Georg Lukács, and Roland BarthesÂ's theories on love and longing. Working with canonical authors such as Ann Radcliffe, Charles Maturin, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Oscar Wilde, and also with non-canonical texts such as contemporary romance, The Dangerous Lover combines a lyrical, essayistic style with a depth of inquiry that raises questions about the mysteries of desire, death, and eroticism.
The Dangerous Lover is the first book-length study of this pervasive literary hero; it also challenges the tendency of sophisticated philosophical readings of popular narratives and culture to focus on male-coded genres. In its conjunction of high and low literary forms, this volume explores new historical and cultural framings for female-coded popular narratives.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read!.......2007-09-21
Fantastic book, it really helps you understand the characters you read about in these classic novels. If you appreciate this era of literature, you will find this book to be a great read as well as inspiring. Will also introduce you to books you maybe havent't read or heard of before.
Meditative, thoughtful rumination on one of our culture's dominant archetypes, and its origins........2007-03-06
The figure of the dangerous lover crops up in blockbuster movies, pulp fiction, harlequin romance novels, as well as more "literary" fiction and films. He is a staple figure of our collective imagination and his presence seems almost synonymous with romance--excepting perhaps feature films of the romantic comedy variety.
Strange then, that this book by Dr. Deborah Lutz should be the first and only one I've run across to explore and dissect this figure, his character and history.
An academic book of this nature could easily become just an exercise in collating footnotes and obscure material; instead, Dr. Lutz opts for a more meditative, essayistic approach to her subject, something akin perhaps to Didion, Barthes, or Benjamin. The method fits the subject matter well as the dangerous lover could be considered part of our collective dreamscape and therefore benefits from a study that ambles through our cultural sensorium and recollections in a fashion largely informed and choreographed by the character of the dangerous lover himself. What is thrilling about the book is its ability to deal in Heidegger as well as harlequin romance without missing a beat or without making these different literary realms seem incongruous or affected.
While at times the arguments in Dr. Lutz's prose can meander disconcertingly as they render her topic, they are nevertheless guided by a prevailing wind of deep, thoughtful, and studious reflection on her subject--a subject that, whether we like to admit it or not, has an incredibly deep hold on our inner life, whether in our romantic attachments, our sense of self, or our consumption of entertainment.
I found it very well worth the read for its ability to both broaden my understanding of various literary genres, as well as helping me understand aspects of my self and self-development in new and interesting light. Buy it and enjoy!
A Brainy Delight.......2007-01-18
"The Dangerous Lover" by Deborah Lutz is a Heideggerian romp through some of the darker precincts of 19th-Century sexuality. The sophistication of contemporary cultural theory is brought to bear on the scoundrels, misanthropes and dandies of the Romantic and Victorian periods to plumb their timeless attraction. The brooding, wounded soul has been a staple of English literature from the inception of the Gothic novel in the late 1700's through to the pulpy romances of today. Lutz subjects this figure to a searching analysis, never losing sight of the human pathos that makes him worthy of our fascination.
An engrossing meditation.......2006-12-10

Book Description
Published anonymously in 1816, the same year in which Lamb's husband's family attempted to have her declared insane, Glenarvon tells the story of the love affair that shook London society. Few early readers could fail to recognize the author as irresponsible Calantha, William Lamb as her long-suffering husband Lord Avondale, or the legendary Lord Byron himself, "mad, bad and dangerous to know," as the strangely and tragically irresistible Glenarvon.
Download Description
The morning sun, when it arose, shone bright and brilliant upon the valley of Altamonte--its gay castle, and its lake. But a threatening cloud obscured the sky, as Camioli raised his eyes and turned them mournfully upon the ruined priory of St. Alvin, and the deserted halls of Belfont.-- "Woe to the house of Glenarvon!" he said. "Woe to the house of my patron and benefactor! Desolation and sorrow have fallen upon the mighty. Mourn for the hero who is slain in battle.
Customer Reviews:
Only if you have your own "Romantics" love affair.......2005-05-21
As most people know, Glenarvon tells the story of Lamb's real life love affair with Lord Byron, an experience which deeply touched her and affected the rest of her life.
However, the book is much more than a tawdry kiss-and-tell expose, as Lamb shows that she appreciates Romantic sensibilities as much as her erstwhile lover. Some people have described the book as unreadable, and at the time it was first published it was dismissed as little more than scandalous revelation; although it can be confusing at times, and is not a straightforward retelling of the affair, it is well worth persevering with.
The book strays into the realms of fantasy, and if you are reading it purely as historical research it can be difficult to extricate who's who, as sometimes one real-life character resembles two characters in the book, or vice versa. The lead parts are, however, fairly obvious. Calantha is Lamb herself, Lord Avondale is her husband William Lamb, and Glenarvon her lover Byron.
As the story continues the plot becomes more and more tangled, and although it often strays beyond the realms of reality, it is interesting when compared with other fictitious representations of Byron, particularly that of Polidori's "Vampyre"
The novel reveals much more about Lamb than it does about Byron, and in my opinion serves to redeem her from the position of deranged groupie that history has assigned her. It reveals interesting details about her early life, perhaps not always taken into consideration when examining here character. Moreover this book shows her to be intelligent, as it is far from an hysterical romance.
I would definitely recommend the book to those with an interest in the Romantics, and most particularly an interest in Byron.
Turgid and over dramatic - but a must for Byron fans.......2000-12-14
This book is interesting from a historical perspective but that is really all. What Lady Caroline Lamb needed was a damn good editor as Glenarvon is a long and turgid read. I doubt there would be any interest in this book now were it not for the fact that she wrote it as a roman a clef - a book with thinly disguised portraits of many of Regency London's celebrities - and of course primarily about her relationship with the great poet Byron.
Did I say her relationship? Well not quite. This is a highly Gothic rendition of their relationship. There was no attempt to present it as anything but fiction - but those in know tried to pick out the facts from the overlay of fictional story-telling. For instance a letter she used verbatim in here is said to have been written to her by Byron.
This edition has a marvellous introduction which puts the novel in context with the times and Lamb's life and helps us as readers understand the links between real life and fiction. But this is an uneasy novel, poorly paced, with a tendency to maudlin pathos and overwrought chest-beating. It is interspersed with sections of intentional humour - Lamb clearly had great talent - but much of it was for the over-dramatic. Its a pity she wasn't taken in hand by her editor then as there are the makings of a very good novel in amongst the pages of dross. Overall the the novel is very Gothic and really only of interest to those who have an interest in Byron or Lamb herself. Byron, is of course Glenarvon the anti-hero of the novel and Lady Caroline the poor victimised Calantha.
In short the novel is all about poor old Calantha who marries one man, but is seduced by another (Glenarvon) who also masquerades under another evil persona. Their are ruined castles galore, quivering breasts, breathless terror - and the Irish rebellion of the late 1790's makes a bit of showing as well.
Lamb wrote two more novels after this neither of which have been reprinted - they were both, it seems overwritten as well, but without the added advantage of dozens of personality portraits of real people to ensure the successful marketing of the book. . Glenarvon was written, Lamb claims, as an apology to Byron, but marked the end of her acceptability amongst the elite of London society. She had overstepped the limit of social acceptibility once too often.
One of the oddest things about all this is that although we know Lamb as the lover of Byron, the affair was of the briefest - hardly lasting more than four months in the summer of 1812. She became completely obsessed with him after that and he had no peace from her. He eventually left London just before this book was published and died overseas fighting for the Greek cause in 1824. Lamb died 4 years later in 1828. I wonder if we should have known much of her at all were it not for those brief three months?
