Not Koertge's best, but still worth reading.......2006-12-26
Margaux is pretty, popular and deeply unhappy. The reader doesn't know why until she starts hanging out with not handsome, not rich and not popular Andy, who is happy. Andy works at the local animal shelter, and for fun, first alone and then with Margaux, looks to see what kind of homes the adopted animals have. Andy and Margaux are both academically adept and with each other can be honest, real friends.
It's not as good as the author's _Shakespeare Bats Cleanup,_ and its similarities to _Stoner and Spaz_ are there, but I liked it more than _Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright._
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-06
If Stoner & Spaz pushed the envelope, then MARGAUX WITH AN X set the envelope on fire and tossed it from a window. This engaging and fun read by Ron Koertge presents two more likeable, quirky, and sardonic main characters who don't fit in and stop trying to.
But it's not an edgy or controversial book full of salacious and scandalous details about Margaux and Danny, two teen misfits. This book is impossible to put down due to Koertge's omniscient narrator, who guides the reader through the lives of two teens who are scarred by their parents. The narrator's voice is snarky and intelligent (Dictionary, anyone? What DOES persiflage mean, anyway?) and it's blended with Margaux's and Danny's, lending the novel a feeling of wholeness. Koertge clearly knows what it's like to be an outsider. In less capable hands, the blending of voices used in MARGAUX WITH AN X would fall flat and appear amateurish. But Koertge succeeds masterfully; the impression left on the reader is that Danny and Margaux are two parts of the same puzzle, and the narrator knows how to fit them in place because he's worked the puzzle before.
The main characters do not "complete" each other. There is no romantic sizzle. Instead, theirs is a relationship necessary to start their lives over again, without the shallow expectations of their peers in their SoCal high school environment. Danny's friendly but his awkwardness or disinterest in Margaux sexually makes him appealing to her. Although he may seem contrived to some oversexed readers, it is an unstated fact that his father's abusive nurturing has affected him in a variety of ways, both good and bad. Margaux's good looks draw men to her, a fact she resents due to her own sad past. By keeping these two on a platonic but loving level, Koertge lays the groundwork for a believable, happy ending to a compelling novel.
Highly recommended. Five stars and Gold Award.

Resonably okay............2006-03-04
Margaux with an x is about a young lady who seems to have it all. Beauty,Popularity and can do about anything without getting into trouble at home. Yet she is not happy she holds a dark secret that happened to her when she was young. She is tired of every boy drooling over her and wanting to date her and most having no content to them. She has a gambler as a father and a mother who just watches television all day. Her life takes a different turn when she meets Danny. He is the total opposite of all the guys she has dated. He is a year behind her in high school he is thin and is not shapely, yet they both start a bond with each other. The book was interesting but after awhile I got tired and could not keep up with the constant bantering and sarcasm of the main characters.
Extremely sharp and entertaining.......2005-06-03
This book, despite an serious and well-developed plot, had me cracking up. The sarcastic and intelligent humor it is written in, most notably Margaux's voice, is hilarious. Margaux experiences changes and deep hurt, while running a higly entertaining and sophisticated track of commentaries on everything. I really loved this book, and literally read it in one sitting. The entire book is well thought out, and leaves you with the good feeling of having read a witty, self-contained book. I really recommend this to any young adult readers out there.
Sharp insightful glimpses into the tumultuous lives of teens.......2004-10-23
Nothing is what it seems because there are secrets to keep. Margaux, by far the best-looking girl in her class, smart and witty, knows this "secret stuff" at an early age. She and her father share a dark secret. Her father is good-looking and funny, but is always the con artist and spends his life gambling --- sometimes he wins, sometimes he doesn't. Then there is her mother, locked in her own world of TV shopping, getting her nails done, and sharing her husband's excitement at the racetracks. So while Margaux makes the good grades, dates one boy after another and hangs out with her shallow friends, she is lonelier and angrier than anyone could ever know.
Danny Riley is a walking resale shop. His clothes are too big; he has a plain face and a manner about him that says he just doesn't care what other people think. Danny has his secrets too --- the father who beat him, the aunt who saved him (he hopes) and the devotion to the humane society where he volunteers. Danny is not considered "cool" by his peers and is, in fact, an outsider simply by the way he dresses.
Like Ron Koertge's STONER & SPAZ, Danny and Margaux are a little oil and water. They come together with an unexpected attraction, which at first totally confuses Margaux:
"...Margaux looks for Danny/is afraid he's looking for her/wants to see him/wants to avoid him/wonders why he hasn't sought her out/is afraid he will. Really, what can she be thinking; that uncomely face, the spindle-shanked meagerness of him, the teakettle thinness of his breath. His daunting goodness."
As the relationship develops, Margaux meets Danny's aunt Evie, who suffers from debilitating MS. Margaux also meets the darker Danny --- the Danny who is his father. But out of the chaos in both of their lives, they are pulled together and Margaux does not run from the opportunity to learn from Danny and his wise aunt.
Koertge is a master at exploring teens on the edge. Like Paulsen, Cormier and Brooks, Koertge gives us sharp, insightful glimpses into some darker aspects of adolescents and their lives. Teens will be attracted to these unusual characters and a well-paced story.

Book Description
This marvelous anthology edited by New York Times bestselling author Malachy McCourt collects fiction, poetry, and essays by esteemed Irish writers over three centuries. From Oscar Wilde's The Ballad of Reading Gaol and Other Poems to James Joyce's Dubliners, these literary masterpieces form a collective record of the modern Irish experience. Now in paperback, Voices of Ireland includes biographies that bring each writer into focus.
Customer Reviews:
Literary Brilliance from the 17th C. to 20th C........2004-02-14
Malachy McCourt created a wonderful compilation of Irish classical writing. This book reveals one of Ireland's finest treasures ... its literature and dazzling writers. Often this Irish "traditon" is pushed aside by the headlines that shout about the political and religious conflicts. The literary geniuses are *both* men and women who are recognized in this volume by their carefully selected classic writing to be world class authors ... authors who give Ireland permanent status as an artistic and creative society.
Jonathan Swift, famous for his book, "Gulliver's Travels", was a genuine humanitarian who wrote a tongue-in-cheek satire, a short story titled, "A Modest Proposal" which was absolutely shocking in its day -- but which brought much needed attention to the plight of poor children who were starving. In short, he proposed all the valid reasons they should be fed, housed and clothed ... so as to be a delicacy, a meal for the wealthy, who feed, house and otherwise treat their animals and live-stock better than they do human beings. Another very important piece of literature is "Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry" by William Carleton. He provides true descriptions of the peasant life of the 18th C. ... we learn of feuds between families, the reaction of a clan when one of their members is murdered, the funeral and keening, along with the customs of the times, and even the burial. The importance of the Catholic clergy, the role they play in village life, and the influence they have over the people is detailed. Another entertaining piece is the abduction of a school master from a neighboring village ... a town went to this extreme to provide education for their children, something very highly valued and respected. Carleton's writing is filled with the Irish brogue and use of language by the common people which makes you feel you are living within that century and experiencing the customs, traditons and life-style of that era.
So far, my favorite writing is what would be a best selling novel, surely in the top 10 on the New York Times list ... "Uncle Silas: A Tale of Bartram-Haugh" by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu. This literary masterpiece, contains a heroine, Maud Ruthyn, whose father dies, and leaves her in the care o her guardian Uncle Silas. He is a recluse and mysterous because there was an unexplained death which occured many years ago nin his mansion, considered a suicide but rumors still circulate if it wasn't really a murder. This novella includes, a rogueish male cousin, who is a reckless playboy ... a handsome rich widower ... a talkative free-spirited cousin Monica ... and a tom-boyish female cousin, the daughter of Uncle Silas. There is an educated, highly cultured French governess -- who is a bit creepy and sinster at times ... The characters, plot, mystery and story-line are all superbly written as suspense builds. It is a non-stop page-turning novella that grabs the reader's attention and will not let it go until the end. This story has all the ingredients for an Academy award winning film ...
I love short stories and literature which depicts tradition, culture and the past ... this book meets my definition of a "great book". Malachy McCourt chose the stories and poems in this book with serious consideraton. The writing spans over 200 of Irish literature -- it even includes selected poems by Oscar Wilde and William Butler Yeats. In the category of world literature, the Irish have proven to be gold medal winners.

Book Description
Eddie Rickenbacker epitomized American spirit in the twentieth century. Daring, skilled, and rugged -- moving fast and defying death -- he drove race cars in the early days of the automobile, then flew canvas-over-wooden-frame aeroplanes in the Great War, downing twenty-six enemy flyers and emerging at war's end as the nation's ace of aces. Only Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing and the much-decorated Sgt. Alvin York emerged from that struggle as equally lauded American heroes.
Failing as an automobile maker after the war, Rickenbacker returned to aviation, joined Eastern Airlines in 1934, and quickly reached the top of the corporate ladder. With the start of World War II, he took on special missions to theaters of combat, surviving twenty-one days adrift on a small rubber raft after his plane went down at sea. But the seemingly indestructible Eddie did not thrive well under the new competitive conditions in the postwar airline industry. Despite having built Eastern into a major carrier, he departed the company under pressure in 1963.
W. David Lewis's biography of Rickenbacker reveals both the achievements and the vulnerability of this quintessential American hero. Rickenbacker embodied what was new, exciting, and romantic about the country in the postwar years. His poignant story also sheds light on the ephemerality of American success and the fragility of celebrity.
Capturing Rickenbacker's life in rich and vivid detail, W. David Lewis has written the definitive biography of America's ace of aces.
Customer Reviews:
A definitive work.......2007-05-17
"Eddie Rickenbacker: An American Hero in the Twentieth Century" is a comprehensive autobiographical study. The man and his life are fairly presented, and the book is written in Dr. Lewis' impeccable and very readable narrative style.
Undoubtedly this is and, I am confident, will remain the definitive study of Eddie Rickenbacker, not only for the author's depth of research, but because, as one reviewer wrote, "Dr. Lewis has painted a balanced, complete picture of an extremely complex man."
In my opinion the book is also very timely in another respect. In addition to historians of aviation and technology, it is also of value to political scientists/historians. Very conservative politically, Rickenbacker is seen as the harbinger of the conservative movement - well before Barry Goldwater and the 1964 presidential contest.
Author doesn't know flying or aeroplanes!.......2007-01-14
The author may be a good storyteller but he exhibits over and over again in this book that he doesn't understand several of the basic principles of aerodynamics and the operation of aeroplanes. For me that defect in the author's presentation was fatal, as it totally undermined my confidence in him as an author. If Captain Eddie Rickenbacker were alive, he would undoubtedly be quite upset with having a biographer who is so lacking in technical acumen about the mechanics of flying. As a result I much prefer Richard Smith's earlier biography of the aviator.
Eddie Rickenbacker.......2006-11-05
As a former Eastern Airlines Captain and having read many stories about Eddie Rickenbacker I was anxious to read W. Davie Lewis's book. I was also priviledged to hear Dr. Lewis speak on his book prior to reading it. I found many things in the book that I already knew and somethings that I was unaware of. I thought when I first started reading it would be a book to pick up and read occassionally, but after the first chapter I was hooked and finished all 551 pages in record time. I would recommend Dr. Lewis' book to other Eastern employees who knew Eddie when we worked for him or just form a history point of view.
An avid story not just of Rickenbacker and his world, but of an evolving transportation industry.......2006-05-23
EDDIE RICKENBACKER: AN AMERICAN HERO IN THE 20TH CENTURY outlines the life and many achievements of a pilot who flew in both war and peace, defying death many times to drive cars in the heyday of the first autos, then planes during the first world war. He returned from war a hero and was decorated for his achievements, but failed as an auto maker after the war and returned to the aviation world in 1934, working for Eastern Airlines until World War II's start brought him new missions. His journey from war hero to peacetime conflicts within the new competitive airline industry makes for an avid story not just of Rickenbacker and his world, but of an evolving transportation industry.
Diane C. Donovan, Editor
California Bookwatch
Excellent Research and Presentation.......2006-05-22
W. David Lewis has written a majestic biography of one of America's great personages of the twentieth century. Eddie Rickenbacker was a race car driver, fighter pilot, businessman and airline industry giant. He was also a survivor and a true fighter- often taking unpopular positions- particularly his controversial comments upon the passing of FDR- essentially saying that FDR got what he deserved. Lewis also finds Rickenbacker in the beginning of the early modern conservative movement during the beginnings of Barry Goldwaters rocket to prominence. Rickenbacker was xenophobic and found the welfare state to be a deeply anathema to the human spirit of self improvement and hard work.
This work is so in-depth no brief Amazon review can give it justice. Whether you're interested in riveting war stories, early automobile racing, politics or the growth of the American airline industry this is a book that I highly recommend. The story of how an poor kid from immigrant family can rise to the pinnacle of American society is truly an interesting story. For author Lewis this book isn't mere hero worship it is an attempt to give Rickenbacker his due as events from the early twentieth century fader further and further out of our historical memory.

Book Description
"Throughout training I kept having the thought,
WELL, ALL THEY CAN DO IS KILL ME.
It seemed to help."
SEALs are the world's toughest soldiers. Working in squads and platoons that make up SEAL teams, they are trained in everything from underwater demolition to high-altitude parachute drops. Now John Carl Roat, graduate of Class-29, one of the earliest SEAL training classes, has written the only book devoted to the training of that exclusive warrior force. With unflinching honesty, Roat describes the brutal six-month program that took young men well beyond the endurance limits even of gifted athletes and created warriors who could proudly take their places in the teams. It was a program so demanding that by the end of Hell Week, the third week of the course, the original class of one hundred and thirty-four physically fit young men had been sliced to sixty-two.
After retelling his own class's experience, Roat visits today's SEAL program and reveals how the program has changed over the last thirty-five years to include more classroom training and better and more sophisticated equipment-- without at all lowering the physical demands. SEAL training is still the best, and the toughest, training in the world.
Customer Reviews:
A great story of the early SEAL training days.......2005-12-03
John Roat's book demonstrates the toughness and determination that was required in the early days of SEAL training.
I enjoyed the way that he describes in great detail the training that he went through. It's like you are right there with him.
Also, there are many stories about their "interactions" with their instructors.
I especially appreciated the last chapter in the book where the author describes, by observing the training the candidates currently go through, the differences in training between then and now. The training now has causes less long-term damage to the body, especially to the knees (the duck-walk was a favorite of the instructors back then).
Above all as you read the book you can see his loyalty, after all these years, to his team members.
From The Author.......2004-08-22
This was written for my Classmates and like them it has brought me nothing but joy. The book comes from the heart, theirs and mine. I've been pleased to hear how much help the book was for some in getting through BUD/S. I do love the questions from young men who aspire to become Team Members so feel free to ask. I will do my best to answer.

To the point, easy to read and like a couple reviewers said " It makes me proud and it made me laugh" Who thought SEALs would be such down to earth enjoyable guys.
Extraordinary read about Extraordinary men.......2004-05-27
Probably one of the most humbling, interesting, and down-to-earth books that I have ever read. It is very cut and to the point with none of the wishy washy fillers that other literates try and throw at you. Get a hold of this book ASAP.
WOW.......2004-02-26

Book Description
A riveting, pulse–pounding history of SEALs special operations in the words of the heroes who lived it.
The U.S. Navy SEALs have long been considered among the finest, most courageous and professional soldiers in American military history– an elite fighting force trained as parachutists, frogmen, demolition experts and guerrilla warriors, and ready for combat on the Sea, Air and Land. Born out of a proud naval tradition dating back to World War II, the first SEAL teams were commissioned in the early 1960s. Vietnam was their proving ground.
In this remarkable volume, fifteen former SEALs share their vivid, first–person remembrances of action in Vietnam– brutal, honest and thrilling stories of covert missions and ferocious firefights, of red–hot chopper insertions and extractions, revealing astonishing truths that will only add strength to the SEAL legend.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to accompany SEAL military histories.......2003-11-08
The great thing about this oral history is that you get a personal feel for the characters as they talk about their experiences. The wide range of experiences are reflected in the wide range of personalities that the history is drawn from. The accounts are honest and sincere. Each account begins with a brief editorial introduction and summary of a different aspect of the SEALs unit formation and operational history in Viet Nam. This helps the reader to understand the subject as a broad total of experiences rather than just a bundle of yarns slapped together. The editor did a great job of putting the accounts in an informative sequence which gave this reviewer a greater background understanding of the following accounts as I progressed through the book.
I bought my copy during a visit to the SEAL/ UDT Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida and I strongly recommend other interested military buffs to buy this book and check out the museum. Well worth it.
Couldn't put this one down.......2001-08-07
This was a great book!! I started it on a Friday & was finished by Sunday. 15 great stories told by the men who lived it. A must read if you enjoy SEAL books.
Famous "Survivor" included in book.......2000-08-29
I haven't read this book, but I did notice that the first chapter is devoted to Rudy of "Survivor" fame, who holds the record for longest service in naval special warfare.
Great Book about SEALS in the Vietnam War.......1999-07-27
This is a great book about 15 SEALS and their experiences from training to the Vietnam war and life in the teams. It is interesting to read about the different personalities of this elite group and the things that make them alike. Highly recommended.

Book Description
In Fall 2003, Iraqi prisoners were beaten, stripped naked, confined in small spaces, tortured, sexually humiliated, and abused by U.S. personnel at Abu Ghraib, a sprawling prison complex near Baghdad. The abuse was kept hidden by the U.S. military until photographs of the victims and their smiling tormentors were released to a stunned American public. Several investigations into the scandal were launched. Their assessment of the "brutality and purposeless sadism" at Abu Ghraib is shocking.
The Abu Ghraib Investigations reveals the awful truth about what happened at Abu Ghraib, who is responsible, and what can be done about it. It includes:
A lead essay by Craig R. Whitney of the New York Times, putting the scandal in historical and political context
Excerpts from the official Abu Ghraib Report, commissioned by Donald Rumsfeld, analyzing the events leading up to the abuses and their consequences
Excerpts from the Jones/Fay Investigation, commissioned by the Pentagon, detailing specific abuses in graphic detail
Photographs that led to the investigations of the abuses
Key documents, including official military interrogation policies and the infamous Presidential memo of Feb 7, 2002
Former Newsweek editor Steven Strasser has combed through the extensive investigative documents available and extracted the most revelatory information about the abuses-the real extent of the crimes, the fundamental flaws in the military's detention and interrogation techniques, the egregious failures in command and leadership, and the consequences for the future of the U.S. military and the war in Iraq. In his lead essay, Craig R. Whitney of the New York Times places the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal into an historical context, explaining how the crimes could have happened, and exploring why they have rattled our nation so deeply.

Documentation of the Greed, Horror, and Inhumanity of War.......2004-10-27
THE ABU GHRAIB INVESTIGATIONS may not be a book readers will elect to purchase and read, but this finely edited treatise by Steven Strausser is a document that should be part of the history books and of the information presented to the American public at this particular time.
While Americans were shocked by the incredibly agonizing photographs of prisoner abuse in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, little information as to the extent of this atrocity has been readily available. After an informative and well-written introduction by Craig Whitney, the actual Department of Defense Detention Operations Abu Ghraib Report is presented in complete form. The now infamous photographs, which devastated the American image throughout the world, are presented here. The Investigation of the Abu Ghraib Detention Facility and 205th Military Intelligence Brigade include not only the physical and sexual abuses and drug problems in the prison, but also the frightful lack of control over the soldier's in charge of interrogations and prisoners. Frequent references to the situations at Guantanamo Bay prisons and the trail of responsibility for prisoner abuse leading all the way to the White House make for fascinating though very disturbing reading.
Time will deal with these documents and what they represent in our history, but at the present one wonders if the conditions at Abu Ghraib prison were much different during the reign of Hussein. Much food for thought here and a prayer for action to prevent such atrocities of war in the future. Strasser is to be commended as an editor for his refraining to add comment, but to let the horror on these pages speak for itself.
Book Description
The loss and fragmentation of natural habitats is one of the major issues in wildlife management and conservation. Habitat corridors are sometimes proposed as an important element within a conservation strategy. Examples are given of corridors both as pathways and as habitats in their own right. Includes detailed reviews of principles relevant to the design and management of corridors, their place in regional approaches to conservation planning, and recommendations for research and management

Good review of the advantages and disadvantages of connecting habitat isolates.......2006-06-02
The world has seen unprecedented land clearing in the last half-century, with widespread conversion of forest to agriculture and other uses. This forest conversion has led to a significant loss of species around the world. For many species, much of the remaining habitat is fragmented, with scattered forests in a landscape otherwise occupied by humans.
Various theories, such as island biogeography theory, suggest that this fragmentation is bad for species survival. One natural solution is to try to connected these islands of forest through wildlife corridors, greenbelts, and similar strategies. Though this solution sounds perfectly reasonable in theory there is little evidence whether it works or not.
This is the question that Bennett addresses in this book. He does not present original research on the effectiveness of these linkage strategies but does a good job bringing together existing research on the topic. The book is intended primarily for students and for practitioners, but is accessible to a general audience interested in these questions.
Bennett makes a convincing case that the usefulness of linkages strategies varies significantly by habitat and especially by species. For example, many birds can thrive in a fragmented landscape because they can move from one forest to another. At the other extreme, snails don't really benefit from linkages at all. The entire book goes through such examples, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of linkages in the landscape, successes and failures, challenges, and the evidence both for and against them.
This is a very helpful book. Its overall coherence suffers somewhat from reliance on other people's studies, not all of which are directly comparable. But it's a good place to start.
