    Book Description

Philip Caputo's passion for travel and adventure was inspired by the works of Joseph Conrad, Jack London, and Herman Melville, and through the years this passion led to a rugged writer's life, filled with hair-raising experiences in the jungles of Vietnam, the rubble of Beirut, and the savannas of Africa. In the Shadows of the Morning collects Caputo's essays for the first time, each imbued with the powerful and memorable writing for which he has become so well known. In "The Ahab Complex," Caputo recalls a life-and-death struggle off the coast of Florida with a majestic giant blue marlin whose quarter-ton body "lit up as if a gigantic light had flashed in the water." He recounts his travels in Kenya's largest national park among the only lions to have a natural tendency to stalk and eat human beings, and where the accounts of their gruesome escapades invaded his dreams. In "The Last of the Big Open," he reflects on a harrowing trip down the Alaskan river that nearly claimed his son's life, nature's indifference to human loss, and an evocative account of letting go. In the Shadows of the Morning is a fascinating journey through a lifetime of profound experiences. Adventurers and lovers of great writing will welcome this collection of finely crafted essays by one of America's most gifted writers. (6 x 9 1/4, 288 pages)

Philip Caputo is a Pulitzer Prize winner and author of several critically acclaimed novels and works of nonfiction, including Delcorso's Gallery, Exiles, The Voyage, Means of Escape, Indian Country, Equation for Evil, and the national best-seller A Rumor of War, praised as the most accurate portrayal of combat yet written. He lives in Connecticut.

5 out of 5 stars Overcoming Shame and Fear with Faith and Love.......2007-10-08

I picked this book up on a whim. I'm usually wary of books about faith as I don't like preaching. However this was not a problem with NO SHAME, NO FEAR even though the center of the story is Faith. It is Su overcoming her fear of the repercussions of living her religion. It is Will facing the shame from his family for his choices. It is discovering the power to overcome being thrown in jail and spit on and beat and to continue a chosen course of action knowing it will happen again. I could relate to their trials because I fear that exact type of fear and shame in my own life. I envy the inner strength it took to do what they did.

I would definitely recommend this book.

                  2 out of 5 stars Pre-teen read.......2007-06-25

(How did this get tagged as a vampire & werewolf romance??).

I read this (and will be reading the sequel next) because someone at meeting--yes, I'm a Quaker--was very enthusiastic about it, but I'm afraid I don't think that it warrants trumpeting. I might have liked it better had it been in print when I was about twelve, but for anyone older than that it's pretty dull, even if one overlooks the adolescent histrionics (nothing racy, but it gets old). One gets the impression that the author has a better grasp of the letter than the spirit of historical accuracy. There was no convincing feel of the seventeenth century--the attitudes seem utterly modern--and the characters were bland and two-dimensional. Everything they think, do, or feel has to be spelled out. It reads like a low-budget after-school special. Also, the writer never made it very clear for readers who are not already familiar with the religious situation of the time, why everyone cared so much about religious dissenters.

I'm still going to read the second one, but I was not particularly impressed with this.

4 out of 5 stars No Shame, No Fear leaves Quaker history a bit more clear.......2006-08-16

It's 1662 and you're in England. Today's the day you attend church, so you go to the meeting house and meet with the Friends. It's a very silent service, but anyone can speak when they feel moved. They talk about "the light" and how they must witness to the light without shame or fear. Suddenly, armed men break into the meeting house and beat the men, women, and children - saying that you're meeting unlawfully and stirring dissent. About 20 are arrested and the rest are forced to go home.

This civil unrest is becoming more and more common in Susanna's world. She's always been told that she must remember that God is with her and that she hasn't done anything wrong, so she shouldn't hide. Susanna is a Quaker in a time when Quakers are severely persecuted.

There is one right religion in England, and that is the Anglican church. William comes from an Anglican family, and he's always known the good life. He just finished up his schooling and is now promised to an affluent silk merchant. However, in the midst of this, he is attracted to a certain outlawed religion and a certain Quaker girl who doesn't seem to fit in his world.

Susanna and William find themselves in a budding romance, but conflict stirs around them. Can William commit to the Quakers by leaving his wealthy lifestyle to share in their sufferings? Will there even be a safe home for them after so many of the Friends have been arrested?

4 out of 5 stars No shame, No fear.......2006-08-05

It is the year of 1672, right after the civil war of England. Susanna is a 15 year-old-Quaker. Will is the son of a rich merchant and soon to be apprenticed to a merchant. Susanna and Will meet in the countryside, going there sepparate ways. He was on his way home from Oxford and she on the way to a Meeting. They meet again when Susanna goes to work for a printer in the same villiage were Will lives. Will keeps going to see her and they fall in love. He starts going to Quaker Meetings and decides he likes the ways of Quakers more than the way of the Anglicans. Susanna and Will suffer the harsh treatment that is put upon them for being Quakers. The book shows the innocence of the Quakers and how they must suffer for their religion. The Quakers were treated very un-fair, when they did nothing that made them deserve too go to prison. This book showed how two teenagers put up with the mistreatment and saw the light in good anyway.

3 out of 5 stars good premise but very slow and boring.......2006-05-16

I can't believe this got rave reviews as I found the plot slow and boring actually. Story is set in 1662; Susannah is a Quaker teen who finds herself drawn to Will, a well educated young man not suited for her, as her mother thinks. The plot takes the reader into the solid characters of Quaker society and while that part is interesting, it just falls flat on the rest of the novel. There were way too many THEES and THOUS for me to get past and enjoy. That part seemed too overdone.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!.......2004-02-26

For those looking for true peace and joy in their Christian life, this book is a must. James B. Richards has a way of wording profound things into a simple, easy to understand language. The true Gospel message comes alive in a way that is often not taught in mainstream Christian circles. I'm getting copies for my kids so they can have a reference of what God's love is really all about.

This book is excellent for anyone calling themselves a believer, but I think it would also benefit many that have been hurt, condemned or even turned-off by "religion."

                  5 out of 5 stars Powerful!!!.......2003-02-06

This book changed the way I see God. I saw that the "Gospel" of Peace or the "Good News" of Peace is that God has made peace with human beings through His Son. We don't have to be afraid of the one who went to so much trouble to have relationship with us. I loved this book, and it caused me to fall in love with God all over again. Don't miss it!

                                      Book Description

An up-to-date, comprehensive yet compact source of biochemical and molecular biological data containing more than 4,500 entries and over 1,000 figures, formulas and tables. The ideal reference book for the researcher, teacher and student. In the third edition existing entries have been revised and where necessary, entirely re-written. Many new entries on Molecular and Cell Biology have been included. Advances in our knowledge of metabolic pathways have not been ignored. There are also new entries on methods for the determination of macromolecular structure and conformation. Several topics have been reorganized, and certain subjects previously grouped together have now been separated anbd accorded more extensive treatment as separate entries.

                                                    Book Description

Readers have long cherished the brilliant, ironic novels of Jane Austen and critics have ranked them with the masterpieces of world literature, but surprisingly, there has been no major biography of the novelist in over seventy years. Park Honan's highly accliamed "Jane Austen: Her Life" is the biography that Austen--and her readers--have long deserved.

                                                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Janeites will want to read this.......2005-07-08

This book claims to cover a great deal of new material, although I would have to say that it doesn't seem to me to add much to other biographies. I would guess that a lot of the new material relates to Frank Austen, since the biography begins, somewhat surprisingly, with a several page account of his entry into the Navy. I would therefore recommend it to Janeites, who will want all the details, but those who have already read a biography and are not terribly interested probably won't find that this rewards the additional reading. (I am among those who just love details, although this is a bit much even for me.)

Previous biographers, such as Elizabeth Jenkins (Jane Austen: A Biography), have portrayed the Austens as a loving and harmonious family. Recent biographers have challenged this view, sometimes even arguing for serious tension between Jane and her sister Cassandra. Honan argues for a relatively harmonious group, with some normal dissensions.

I give somewhat mixed marks to the writing. I find statements such as "The deepest purpose of her burlesques was always to ensure her freedom within the loving group of the Austens ... " (p.70) as unverifiable verbiage that adds little to the reading experience. I don't think that we needed several pages on the actual events of the Battle of Trafalger, although of course it adds to the general historical detail. On the other hand, Honan's reconstruction of JA's possible thoughts as she agonized over withdrawing from her engagement to Bigg-Withers are quite affecting, even if speculative. I don't think that I have ever read a more moving account of her courage during her last illness.

The bibliographic citations are frustratingly uneven and incomplete. Previous biographers have pilloried Edward Austen (Knight) for his failure to offer his mother and sisters a home immediately after his father's death. Honan claims in passing that he did make such an offer and they declined it. There is no citation for this startling, and in understanding the interactions of the Austens, important statement! Honan also agrees with Valerie Grosvenor Myers (Jane Austen, Obstinate Heart: A Biography) in stating that Mrs. Cassandra Austen (JA's mother) was reluctant to get married, but neither cites a source! This claim suggests a number of interesting possibilities regarding the mother-daughter relationship and JA's own decisions regarding marriage, and is certainly important enough to require substantiation.

One of the reviewers has mentioned that there are numerous errors in the book. I can't say that I was struck by them, unless the reviewer is speaking of difference in interpretation, but I can't claim to be any expert, either.

Honan includes several family trees and the notes, such as they are, are arranged so as to be easy to find. There is an index, not as detailed as it might be. There is a useful review of materials and previous writings on Austen and related topics.

Honan does not like John Halperin's book, The Life of Jane Austen, which he claims is inaccurate, but it is so far my favorite and the most focussed of the long biographies. For a short biography, which I like to read before long biographies when available, I recommend Carol Shield's book, Jane Austen (Penguin Lives), and Valerie Grosvenor Myer's Jane Austen, Obstinate Heart: A Biography, as a midlength book. The latter is flawed by a lack of notes.

                                                    1 out of 5 stars Oops -- Honan's Errors.......2001-07-12

I found 23 factual errors in Honan's book -- when I mentioned this to someone I was told that a reader in Virginia had found 142. There are much better biographies of Jane Austen out there -- for starters, no one has yet surpassed Elizabeth Jenkins', first published in the 1930s, and a fine recent one, a good introduction to JA's life, is Maggie Lane's latest, Jane Austen's World. Don't be put off by the fact that it is slick and, as they say, richly illustrated -- it's readable, sound and remarkably complete despite its size.

Park Honan (professor of English and American Literature at the Universiy of Leeds in England) wrote "Jane Austen: Her Life" in the late 1980's. At the time he wrote his book, he had access to much new material including a treasure trove of letters written by various folks who knew Ms. Austen. Mr. Honan has included an impressive bibliography in his book which should keep one reading for years to come.

Honan says Ms. Austen understood the current affairs of her time and he provides ample documentation to substantiate this assertion. He also suggests her knowledge of current events is reflected in her writing, albeit thinly disguised.

Although Austen lead a somewhat sheltered life as the daughter of an English vicar, she lived in exciting times. Napolean was at his height, the Revolution in France and subsequent 'Reign of Terror' kept English on pins and needles, thirteen of England's 23 American colonies had revolted and created a new nation that had sided with the French, and the aristocracy was in turmoil over scandels surrounding the monarcy.

Austen was kept abreast of these activities in a variety of ways including letters from her naval brother Frank. Historians have uncovered over 500 letters Frank wrote to family members, and he kept meticulous journals of his time in the navy. Although he probably did not tell Jane everything, he did share many newsworthy events such as the difficulties on his ship the 'London' when six men were hanged and some others "lashed for insolence, mutiny and an 'unnatural crime of Sodomy." Honan says Austen refers to this incident in "Mansfield Park" when she has the character Mary Crawford who is living next door with her adulterous admiral uncle say, "Of Rears and Vices, I saw enough."

Honan says Austen was influenced by the writings of Mme. de Sevigne, whom Ms. Austen's father considered too much of a feminist. Jane Austen was very concerned about the plight of women and considered adultry and divorce a scourge on women. She was aware of the Regent Prince's attempt to put aside his wife Queen Charlotte on "trumped up" charges of adultry. She sympathized with the Queen, unaware that the Queen was a fan of her books.

Influenced by works such as the third Earl of Shaftesbury's "Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times" she enjoined her readers to have the 'sense' "to control one's emotions through observation, reason and moral understanding" and the sensibility to have an "accurate perception of other people and their feelings."

There are plenty of examples throughout Honan's book of the effect of external events on Ms. Austen's writing and thinking, not only her books, but in the letters that did survive and journals kept by Ms. Austen and others.

This is an informative an excellent book for anyone who wants to know more about Ms. Austen's life and works.
